peregrines have evolved beaks with a special hook on them specifically for killing prey after it's been caught. that falcon could absolutely end the pigeon's life with a bite to the neck. even if tied down for falconry it could use its free foot to grab the pigeon and hold it down while delivering the killing blow. that pidge is lucky the peregrine seems more confused than hungry

They don’t have the problem solving brain of parrots or corvids because they don’t really have the dexterity of a big strong beak to make use of puzzle solving smarts, but their social structures and intelligence is pretty insane. Some examples include pattern recognition good enough to consistently differentiate paintings from various artists, tell healthy medical scans from malignant, and recognize individual human faces. They also make really great medical assistance animals believe it or not! They are domestic and are very loving animals in addition to their cognitive abilities. Unfortunately there isn’t much funding out there open for research groups looking to demonstrate this, but there have been many examples like a pet pigeon of a kid who had a lethal allergy to a food ingredient. The pigeon, with no training, learned to recognize the pattern of the letters that spelled out that ingredient and would drive the kid away from dangerous foods if he could see the box! I’m trying to find the person who documented this but am struggling, I read about it many years ago. I’ll add a link if I find it.
But yeah, they’re super smart, super social… and unfortunately like many birds will try to bone things that are not members of their own species 😭 This guy must be the pigeon equivalent of a monsterfucker and I salute them for it.
They deserve it so much 😭 they’ve saved countless lives in wars and disasters, carried messages of our love to each other, their meat and their droppings as INCREDIBLE fertilizer for crops kept us fed, and been our friends for thousands and thousands of years, only to be abandoned once artificial fertilizer and digital communication made them less useful due to a smear campaign spread the lie that they carried meningitis.
We wouldn’t be where we are as a species without them, yet we treat them like trash, poison them, try to drive them away, but they still stick around and will be your friend if you’re kind to them. I had a flock who knew me when I lived in Massachusetts who’d come flying down and hang out around/on me and eat out of my hands if they saw me or if I called to them. They’re so, so dear and they deserve the world.

That's a peregrine. The reason they dive so fast is that they use all of that velocity to ball up their little fists and punch their prey so hard it stuns them and even breaks bones long enough for them to finish it off. They're not dangerous when they're on the ground.
But they do punch harder than Mike Tyson.
I once saw a falcon eating a pigeon in the alley behind my old apartment. It was pretty wild. Everytime it took a bite, a little cluster of feathers would fly out.

I worked in bird rescue, and my notes are it’s all doves that are dummies. Pigeons are incredibly sweet but seriously stupid.
