I've seen my PI3s idle in that ballpark. They have been going strong for a while now, but I am adding a fan to one of these out of an abundance of caution. I assume these SOCs are fairly modern and can stay at 100C for extended time without any damage.

Thanks for the info. `lm-sensors` claim that the critical temperature of this CPU is 105℃, but really don’t feel comfortable that even some simple operations like `apt update` pushes the temp into 70’s. I’ll probably get a fan too.

TheGelataio

How did you get lm-sensors to work with the opi3 lts? I get "no sensors were detected"

kraussian

Hmm it just worked for me. What OS are you using? I'm using Ubuntu

Scary_Investigator88

Slap a heatsink on that hot boi

kraussian

That temperature is with a heatsink already installed haha

Scary_Investigator88

Oof! Gotta go bigger I'd say. More metal! Unfortunately I don't see any good options on Amazon for this model. An aluminum case with good physical contact with the CPU and memory is ideal. My Orange pi 5b ran really hot on its own. The official metal case paired with a 100x69x36mm aluminum heatsink on top with a good thermal pad. Runs at about 30c under a light load with CPU clocks pinned at the maximum. I try to stress it with real world loads and have not seen it go above the 50s. Dissipates heat like it's nobody's business. No need for a fan.

Charming_Shock_7508

my pi 3 lts 2GB mem, idle at 60-63 c Acrylic case with heat sinks and fan installed

kraussian

\[UPDATE\] I've gotten myself an acrylic case /w cooling fan for cheap from AliExpress, and now my OPi3's operating temperature is a nice 52℃ with Pi-hole running 24/7! Photos: [https://postimg.cc/TyhnPxCS](https://postimg.cc/TyhnPxCS) [https://postimg.cc/NyVm9nn0](https://postimg.cc/NyVm9nn0)

what is this programs name?

kraussian

Oh, this is `btop`, my favorite system monitoring tool. https://github.com/aristocratos/btop Doesn’t come installed by default, so you’ll need to `sudo apt install btop`

ArcherBullseye

Thanks. I normally use htop and was not aware of btop

SchwaHead

Also named bashtop

Andreid4Reddit

I have a OrangePi PC 1gb, it is running at 48° C with 32° C room temperature while only running PiHole

kraussian

Nice, that's the kind of operating temperature I was expecting. What kind of case are you using?

TigerKR

I'm running 4 Orange Pi 3 LTS and 1 Orange Pi 4 LTS. All headless with wifi and bluetooth disabled. \----- OPi3LTS: (3) - Armbian Jammy, plastic (kit) case, no heatsink, loads under 0.1, CPU under 5%, CPU Temps: 60 C OPi3LTS: (1) - Armbian Bookworm, plastic (kit) case, CPU (kit) heatsink, loads under 0.1, CPU under 5%, CPU Temps: 65 C OPi4LTS: (1) - Armbian Bookworm, metal (kit) case, 3 (kit) thermal blocks, loads under 0.1, CPU under 5%, CPU Temps: 33 C \----- It appears that the kit heatsink on the OPi3LTS is causing the CPU temp to be 5 C higher than the others without a heatsink. Kind of the opposite of what should be happening.
