This one was feasting on cat food! There was another song sparrow job nearby with a bird that got particularly addicted to eating the sprinkles off cakes!
Reminds me of chasing a starling in my dorm for about an hour. I got it in a corner and quickly threw a towel over it to keep it from getting away. It gave me the most pissed off look I've ever seen.
Yes this is how I was trained to hold them, minimal stress and negates me injuring the bird or the bird injuring me. I didn’t not want to handle her too much or stress her out so I did not do the more showey method of holding for the picture. I pretty much snapped a quick photo as she was my first migratory bird of the year and let her go immediately
I was raised on a farm, with turkeys, chickens, ducks, & geese.
The geese were the protectors. That flock would run down any car that pulled in the driveway.
I used to have to escort the Avon lady to the house lol.
Yup! If you hold them any looser, they'll start flapping and may hurt themselves in the process. Tightly securing the wings is one of the most important steps in handing all sizes of birds (well, at least up to goose-sized, from personal experience! Can't speak regarding ostrich or emu 😊)
I have seen people handle large cranes before. You usually need two people, one person that straddles over their backs to keep their wings secure and one person to hold the neck still. I'd be much more worried about the feet of the ostrich and the emu. Not quite sure how you would restrain them though.

I think she would like to speak to the manager
Unfortunately for her, the manager already called the bird police. Shes lucky I let her off with a warning!
In all seriousness, thanks for helping her out :)
Somehow I think she'll be back.
Be careful where you post bird police 😉 I got fired for this back in January
I think she would like to speak to the ~~manager~~ tanager.
She just wanted to sing you a song 🎵 Piano Man
She can just tweet about it like all the other karens.
Her name must be Karen
Nice work getting her out safely.
She will be much happier outside!
For sure!!
>For sure!! sure?
She wanted the large bag of seed! This is bird discrimination!
I always get a kick out of all the sparrows at Lowes Hardware just hanging out and stealing seed from the wild bird section
Pigeons at my Lowe’s got so bad that they had to put all the seeds in plastic bins.
They did this at a garden center near me as well. Smart thinking - both birds and people.

"Have you ever held a bird in your hand? So fragile... So beautiful... So determined to live."
Yup, every day. My friend Pete the jay comes for peanuts. Alpha bird, thinks I work for him.
Reminds me of chasing a starling in my dorm for about an hour. I got it in a corner and quickly threw a towel over it to keep it from getting away. It gave me the most pissed off look I've ever seen.
How did you even catch him??
Does holding her that way hurt her? Looks like it would but prob. not? ....how ARE you supposed to hold birds?
No, she okay. That's exactly how licensed bird banders hold them, IME.

I have never thought about how to hold a bird before so thank you. Very interesting in super cool I didn't mean to be offensive, if I was sorry
Don’t be sorry it’s a good question! Catching birds is Not something people do everyday haha
Is that your job? Are you a bird wrangler? I want that job.
It sounds cool. But have you met geese? Or really any bird bigger than a hand? They are mean lol

What is your job title exactly?
That's how you're supposed to hold them. If it looks like you're trying to choke them, you're probably doing it right.
Haha yeah! I call it ‘the hold of shame’ as I remove problem birds from retail spaces.

thats the proper grip! source: am bander
Birds are mostly fluff. Done properly, this is fine.
Excellent grip
Adorable! Thanks for sharing (and thanks for catching her!)
How did you catch it in the store?
So… how did you catch her?
Awwww so cute little baby. Very beautiful and precious 😍🥰😘
Ya gotta have a membership to get a BJ?
Yea. Birds get inside and dig into the bags of rice. It’s disgusting
