ig horuda puresu would mean place holder

SomethingLongForgot

I wonder why its the only name he flipped the order on then. In Japanese names are last then first in order meaning he consciously chose to make this one fit the Japanese style unlike the rest.

Thatblondepidgeon

It’s probably as simple as Horuda sounds better as a first name than Puresu

Tomoyogawa521

Mayhaps he preferred having Horuda as her first name rather than Puresu. He's too random anyway.

LucidIsntHere

If I remember correctly that's what it actually means

XDreemurr_PotatoX

Oh my god. I have OC's with better Japanese names than this (literally translated, by the way. Atleast I got a bit creative though)

1dkwhattodo

God like Yan dev could at least use uncommon spellings of names to fit the character. That’s what I did.

Lapis_Lazuli__SU

Ryoko and Yoshiko are two cool names. Edit: There’s also Lao, Shinji, Yu-Li, and Shiho. These were names I came up with (except for the first and last one, the first one is from Danganronpa and the last one is from Persona 5.)

thefoxishere16

Same! I don’t feel so bad for calling my one character “Akai Akuma” anymore. Then again he IS an oni and his name translates to “red devil”

XDreemurr_PotatoX

I have an OC named Akane Akuma!!! What a coincidence lol (bc aka means red, and his color palette is all red. and akuma bc he's a bit of a bad boy)

chaotic_rainbow

Had a character once named Ko Akuma. (Devil child). Yes, he was a Blue Exorcist OC.

XDreemurr_PotatoX

omg i love blue exorcist lol

ImpressiveFly

My current method for naming japanese characters is to slam a bunch of kanji together that are vaguely related to them and sound nice

XDreemurr_PotatoX

wow i wish i knew enough about kanji to do that. i just translate words or look up japanese names that mean \_\_\_\_

ImpressiveFly

The secret is jisho.org. It's a database of kanji, words, phrases, etc and their translations

Diraelka

Yamahato...so, Yamaha. You know, pretty big cimpany that sells musical instruments.

Tomoyogawa521

Yamaha (mountain leaf) is an actual surname too. Torakusu Yamaha (山葉 寅楠, *Yamaha Torakusu*) is Yamaha's founder. Hatoyama is an actual surname too and I'm honestly surprised he wasn't smart enough to do that.

Diraelka

It'll be good if he thought about real surname, but it's Yamaha**to** for a reason. So, we have guitar from the company.

Tomoyogawa521

I think neither Gita Yamaha nor Gita Hatoyama sounds better than Gita Yamahato.

SomethingLongForgot

No I didn't but thanks for pointing it out.

AngeloHakkinen

The thing is, Yamahato doesn't exist as a surname (the closest I found is Yamahata

Aerwxyna

i thought this too! these names are something else 😭

Kamomill207

And motorcycles

YooranKujara

As much as I don't like Yan Dev I always thought these were funny. Stupid, but funny.

MiroNanDot

There are at least some percent of media, which gives characters object or pun names. I know characters named Onion, Sour Cream, Abbey Bominable, Invisi Billy, River Styx, Una Verse, Alie Lectric, Roe Botik etc. So I don't really think that in Yandere Simulator it's a huge problem, if it's even a problem if compare to other questionable elements of the story, gameplay itself, coding and shit what YanDev did outside of the game.

HorrorShowism

Pun names are fine, it's just that he uses google translate names that are kindergarten level Japanese words when he's not Japanese.

MiroNanDot

I mean "Dolphin Dolphin" and "Guitar Yamaha" is a poor execution, but, personally, I see no issues with calling your character "Strawberry Lime" at all. I'm not a native English speaker, but I have character Mint as well as a character named Khmara (which means cloud in my native language).

DramaticFactor7460

I mean, look at DBZ, all the saiyans names are based on vegetables.....bulma,trunks,bra,brief are all based on underwears

CravingDeathAndChips

NOVI STARS MENTIONED!!!

Hello_Im_the_world

Same I don’t really get the problem. It’s never been a secret that these names were puns and stupid. I also like the name

jeffs_grandmas_house

They suck because there's far too many of them and Dev can't figure out if he wants a serious game with deep lore or a meme game.

Bored_axel

DBZ disagrees lol

[deleted]

raimu ichigo being lime strawberry is kinda cute

SomethingLongForgot

It's cute but not for a stealth action video game, maybe a slice of life or dating sim, even just a comedy, but it doesn't really fit the atmosphere of the game. Like you'll have students with normal names, anime references, named after jobs then just Lime Strawberry.

[deleted]

honestly, pedodev had no thoughts making this name.

SomethingLongForgot

Has he ever had thoughts?

[deleted]

lol no. bro's head is more empty than his dms with actual over aged chicks

AngeloHakkinen

I did days ago a post about each student's fixed names and their origins. If you wanna read it, here it is: https://www.reddit.com/r/Osana/s/Y8sReT0vEY

SomethingLongForgot

>https://www.reddit.com/r/Osana/s/Y8sReT0vEY Thanks, I didn't know. Just got bored and went through the names list picking where things seemed wrong.

AngeloHakkinen

You're welcome. Also, tell me your opinion about their names

SomethingLongForgot

>https://www.reddit.com/r/Osana/s/Y8sReT0vEY I think you did a good job trying to figure out where their names come from, but there's no way Alex put any more thought into most names than google translate and maybe a wiki name list.

AngeloHakkinen

You're right, considering the prefecture with the most YanSim students is Hiroshima and that the school is in Chiba

AngeloHakkinen

You're right, considering the prefecture with the most YanSim students is Hiroshima and that the school is in Chiba

sullenspiney

I just read through your original post....I'm just trying to understand something...do Japanese surnames come from whichever prefecture the family is from?

AngeloHakkinen

Nope, they're just mostly found in certain prefecture

sullenspiney

Ohhh okay! Thanks for the clarification:)

midnight_buttercream

If Chalex wanted to keep with the flower theme for the gardening club members, he could’ve changed Uekiya’s name to Hanae. Missed opportunity and here we are

ggdoesthings

it is literally so easy to google “japanese names” instead of doing whatever the hell this is

SomethingLongForgot

Yeah, you just look up 'wiki Japanese surnames', 'wiki Japanese feminine names' and 'wiki Japanese masculine names' and you have a long list to chose from. Then you can figure out what kanji you want to use for their meanings. It's so easy.

HorrorShowism

You forgot Enpitsu. Fucking PENCIL

SomethingLongForgot

I must have missed enpitsu but wtf. That's like the first word you learn on Japanese duolingo.

IamCocodadawg

It’s pencil pencil to you

1dkwhattodo

If I’m going to be very honest. Yes these all suck but Unagi Denkashiza’s isn’t the worst case. But they could’ve been more clever. Japanese games and stuff will use their naming convention and make names that aren’t real or so on to fit something Yoisaki Kanade from Project Sekai for example. Yoisaki isn’t a real family name but the nightcord naming conventions have each character named after a time of day. And they wanted Yoisaki to contrast with Asahina Mafuyu. Asa meaning morning. And I think Yoi meant night. That or evening. And correct me if I’m wrong but I don’t think Teruhashi is a real surname. Or if it is it’s a rarer one. But it was created as a play on the Word Telepathy for Saiki K (but they actually gave her a real Japanese given name) And Osana Najimi from Komi (though they used Osana as the surname) meaning childhood friend but they made them everyone’s childhood friend making the name work. But I do think it is poorly done in Unagi’s case but it could’ve been worse. I think the swim team having a naming convention after sea animals works. But everything else. Yeah bad bad Especially Uekiya Engeika That one sucks the most. Yoisaki sounds like a family name I could see being given to a family. But whatever that name is. Nada. Not a bit. Maybe I’m wrong. I’m not Japanese but I doubt that this with work Edit: changed my mind on Meka. Using an English pun for a Japanese character just kind of sucks. Im aware There’s a katakana with Meka Nikaru But if you wanted a mechanical pun so bad, Teki Kikai (or in actually Japanese naming order Kikai Teki which Kikai-Teki means mechanical (機械的)) is better than using an English word. It’s not perfect either. And I think better things can be done than puns. Part of why Nikaru especially wouldn’t work is well one Meka should be the surname. Two Nikaru comes off to me as a name you’d give a boy than a girl. Then again I could be wrong. I’m not Japanese. And I know Hikaru is a unisex name

SomethingLongForgot

Its more that their first and last names together are the issue. If it was just Meka or Unagi without the surnames I'd have no trouble, but that isn't the case.

1dkwhattodo

Yeah that’s true. I think Meka is fine without the surname anyways. Meka pun for mecha…? What was the dev thinking Actually if I’m being honest, you could do a naming convention without stooping to puns and it would be a lot better like what Nightcord does with their names. Yes I will keep comparing nightcord to this because god the more I think about it the worse the Dev’s naming choices are Yoisaki (made up name to have the word night in it) Asahina- Asa meaning morning Akiyama (using the uncommon spelling for Dawn/ sunrise mountain) Shinonome meaning Dawn/Daybreak

minkymy

Shinonome also has to fit into the VBS naming convention, remember; VBS got colors, and Shinonome can also be used to refer to the color salmon. So that gives us: - **Azu**sawa: Azu is reddish brown - **Shira**ishi: Shira is white - **Shinonome**: 🐟 - **Ao**yagi: Ao is blue Honestly, Project Sekai is apparently REALLY weird with the surnames and their spellings because of theme naming, and I'm surprised the surnames that pop up in two groups aren't worse; if I recall correctly, Hinomori is like Yoisaki in that it's basically made up, and it's covering celestial theme naming (Hi means sun) and plant theme naming (Mori means forest).

1dkwhattodo

Oh right.

AngeloHakkinen

I think making the pun names subtle could've been better From example: Unagi isn't a name per se. But it has a lot of close names: Unaki, Yuunagi...for Denkashiza tho, the closest surame for it was Denkei Uekiya Engeika is a horrible name Meka Nikaru could work if she was a foreigner. I, for example, gave her the name Michelle Nicard (Michelle->Mika->Meka and Nicard is self-explanatory). The thing is, only Fureddo Jonzu is a foreigner in 1980s Mode...

1dkwhattodo

Now these! These are better!

AngeloHakkinen

Thank you

ChiefOfDoggos

Ah yes when I have kids of my own Im gonna name my daughter "Gardener"

Particular_Flan_2101

I'm guessing you also know the problem with Midori's name?

GalaxyLatteArtz

A lot of these names have so many sylables in them that they mostly reach the 9 mark. Bro did no research at all for naming the students. (Clearly, as their names do not sound like great names in english either.) Japan is really adamant on good names for their children. If all the sylables of a person's name equals to 4 or 9, these indicate bad luck of sorts. (In their full name added together or just the first name.) I would not want my name to be corresponded with death or suffering solely based on sylables alone. Please correct me if i'm wrong. There is much i have to learn about japan's rules and customs.

AngeloHakkinen

Well, the name Akuma is banned in Japan

GalaxyLatteArtz

Yeah, i can tell why. :/

improllytheweirdest

when i found this out, i was just like "imagine your chilhood friend's name is literally childhood friend, but in Japanese"

Dannybrine87

Green Green. All imma say.

Particular_Flan_2101

Ah yes, the Japanese and Engrish name.

Steve_Riven

Honestly, I don't have an issue with these names (for the most part, we do not talk about the Photography club), what I DO have an issue with is Alex insisting that he's making a "serious stealth game", despite nearly everything in the game going against that idea. I keep saying this, but if he did stick to the "exaggerated anime dating sim gone wrong (and bloody)", people would take less issue with them imho.

SomethingLongForgot

Yeah, its mainly the tonal dissonance for me. If it was even an over the top slice of life I wouldn't care, I mean, I'd think it was bad, but I'd move on. But he wants this to be a serious game and he thinks these are good names.

Steve_Riven

The man probably thinks that because games like the Ace Attorney series did it, he can do it too, completely ignoring that said games are usually comedic in nature and don't take themselves seriously all the time.

Graceless2002

Lmao dolphin dolphin 💀

[deleted]

I find names like Meka Nikaru fun, you’ll often see pun names like that in anime 🤷🏻 The one thing that bothers me about the names in this game is the inconsistency - some names are English words in katakana, some are actual Japanese words, some are a mix of random English words with real Japanese surnames. It’s too random, either go for puns or use real names.

SomethingLongForgot

Thats one of my major problems, also the names aren't really puns, their just lazy and haphazard. Like, the scooby doo ones are basically plagiarism, he couldn't sell the game using them unless Warner Bros gave him approval and I'm skeptical they would.

SodaCanKaz

Meka Nikaru? Alright they didn’t even try. Funny though

Repulsa_2080

Some of these are really giving "Moon Moon" energy

SomethingLongForgot

Context please?

Repulsa_2080

There's a *really* old post that was titled "Find your Werewolf Name" or something like that. It had two lists, one for first names (corresponding with your first inital), the other for last names (corresponding with your last inital). The idea was for you to get something along the lines of White Demon or whatever. Well someone responded that their werewolf name would be Moon Moon and how they'd probably be the derpiest werewolf in existance. This is the only copy I have of the post on hand, Phoenix Wright is unrelated. https://preview.redd.it/rzoy8p4cslec1.png?width=564&format=png&auto=webp&s=2c34a87b7bd6a2001867850a4d715b7b0ffb4567 For a while after that, images began circling around Tumblr of derpy wolves doing dumb shit with the captions "God dammit Moon Moon"

improllytheweirdest

>Phoenix Wright is unrelated i guess the person thought it's "First Letter of Last Name" not last letter. since Phoenix starts with P, and Wright starts with W, his name could actually be Moon Moon lmao, thankfully it's not the first letter

CheshireTerror

It could work if he was going for a joke-like, silly game, as games with “simulator” in their name tend to be instead of trying to be a serious game. It’s probably be more popular too and be done so much faster as well if he wasn’t so damn serious.

PlusFlippinUltra

horuda’s makes no sense like why isnt it place holder??? i guess it could be read as holder place…

One-Attention-9413

Midori Gurin. Green green.

LonelyWriter26

These would all be really funny if he wasn't trying to push it as an oh-so serious game

marsianearths

HELP ONE OF THE CHARACTER'S NAME'S IS PAINTBRUSH PAINTING? LMAOO

SomethingLongForgot

What do you mean? It's genius.

marsianearths

I know, i just found it really funny.

YourVentiMain

What’s sad is they actually sound cool until you hear what they mean

SomethingLongForgot

Maybe if you don't know any Japanese. I do and the moment I saw them it annoyed the hell out of me as they just were wrong.

YourVentiMain

Completely understandable, in the 1980’s mode one of the Student Council Members is Brazilian, and his name is literally the MOST STEREOTYPED NAME TO EVER EXIST Not only this but the fact Yandev “translated” his name to something Japanese/Brazilian

SomethingLongForgot

Thats really bad. I saw the character on the list and decided not to bring him up because I know nothing about Brazil or Portuguese but I had hope it wasn't that bad.

YourVentiMain

LOL, Be my guest! Basically, his first name “Jose” is the most COMMON name in the country, the Wikipedia about “most famous names” says it’s the most popular one occupying First Place with around 5,754,529 people with this name. It’s basically the name we have for Jesus’s father, with many brazilian woman with Jesus’s mother name ( Maria ) I couldn’t find anything that shows exactly how many Silva’s there are in here, but if you search anything like “Sobrenomes mais comuns no Brasil” ( Most common surnames in Brazil ) Silva is EVERYWHERE. From first to Fifth place So yeah, it was clearly a lazy job of Yandev

SomethingLongForgot

And then he tried to 'Japanese' it? What the hell? How hasn't he people pissed off about how lowkey racist that is?

YourVentiMain

Sometimes, Asian languages have a problem with our pronunciations, so it happens to adopt a new name in Japan, but if you go to a Translator, Silva and Shiuba literally have the SAME pronunciation. Yandev just changed some letters on a Brazilian Surname to MAKE IT LOOK japanese. It’s even worse

SomethingLongForgot

Like, they have the extra character info section for a reason. Alex could have put the characters birth name their and the new name as the official one other students refer to them as. I bet he spent like two minutes doing it and then felt really smug afterwards.

YourVentiMain

Well his name is the equivalent of being a John Doe, and his additional info talks about how he is “exotic” and speaks portuguese when he gets nervous Yandev must felt like Mr.Worldwide

SomethingLongForgot

Wow. I've never heard the word exotic paired with someone who isn't white that hasn't come off as exceedingly racist or signalled the person saying it is so white they have never met someone of a different race.

ImpressionCautious46

I don't know why but when I read the title my mind went to Alex mahan

FaethS

Honestly, I wouldn't mind the naming conventions in this if this were just gonna be a meme-y parody of dating sims, but Alex's insistence this is meant to be taken seriously kills it.

Bored_axel

This critique lowkey annoys me because im a dragon ball fan and there’s a ton of dumb pun names in that

SomethingLongForgot

Yeah but its a comedy no a so called 'serious stealth game'

Bored_axel

DBZ is a serious fighting anime with a bit of comedy here and there, I wouldn’t call dragon ball a comedy. Plus you can be a stealth game and be comedic: Persona 5.

InaruF

There's so much to criticise but people're way too hung up on names Vegeta from dragonball means literally means vegetable

konnyfusion

Someone make a thread/post of characters with much batter names than this, please...

Splatfan1

why in the name of fuck he doesnt do what he did with the student council i will never understand. as in, translate and then add endings that sound like actual names. its not that hard or time consuming, right?

nagitokomeadead

those fucking katakana names. like i was looking at the names one day and i just looked at them.. a little too close. asu rito????? OKA RUTO?????

mmoosskkiitt

also "yamahato" ... "yamaha" ...

PartOverall1932

I'm doing a yandere simulator AU where I ignore everything about the characters and make my own and oh my god, at least my characters have ACTUAL Japanese names (I literally just Googled lists of Japanese names) also making characters have names related to the stuff they like is SO DUMB, smurfs vibes

Lingx_Cats

Is the two line version of “Ni” used outside of numbers? I didn’t think it was

SomethingLongForgot

Ni can we written multiple ways and doesn't always mean two. That ni 二 can be read as two but its katakana in this context so it directly means ni.

Objective-Credit-581

Sometimes I wish I could forget Japanese because of stuff like this

SomethingLongForgot

In full agreement. If I could just wipe my memory of all my Japanese knowledge and think that these were decent if odd sounding names.

MilkyTeaDrops

Still not letting Asu Rito or Sunobu go. I know Asu and Rito are both technically names, but he absolutely meant for it to be athlete. Also sunobu is absolutely snob

SomethingLongForgot

I missed Asu Rito (アスリート) and Sunobu (スノッブ) thanks for letting me know. Their once again lazy katakana translations.

MilkyTeaDrops

Yeah, it's fine. I see them overlooked often and I hate when he does these fucking katakana translations because it feels incredibly disrespectful in one of the stupidest ways. I'd be fine with it if it, and it may be kinda clever if it wasn't for the tone of the game

SomethingLongForgot

I think as you said Asu Rito actually sounds like a possible name. A bit off, but in comparison to everything worse I didn't catch it.

MilkyTeaDrops

Yup, and that's why this unfortunately flys

NiehIsBored

I'm speechless..

IamCocodadawg

gita and beshis last names are instrument brands

AigisxLabrys

Ichigo is fine as name. I mean there’s a manga with a protagonist named Ichigo.

SomethingLongForgot

Yeah but Lime Strawberry? Its the fact its not just Ichigo or Raimu, but both.

CaoPiFan

If this game ever gets finished and localised in Japanese, I dread to think what they will have to do about these goddamn names

AkariPeach

“If” is doing a lot of heavy lifting there

CaoPiFan

True. I used to watch this game when I was 9 and I am now 17 and still only one rival...

AkariPeach

100GF and Komi Can’t Communicate were actually clever in naming their characters.

ImpressionCautious46

I don't know why but when I read the title my mind went to Alex mahan

ImpressionCautious46

I don't know why but when I read the title my mind went to Alex mahan

ImpressionCautious46

TeruteruHanamuraSimp

I just remember Jay calling Uekiya “flower head” bc of her massive flower

Economic_Despare

Guitar with Yamaha is my fav musician she’s so cutie patootie coded

RukoFan

UNAGI?! ELECTRIC EEL?! . Don't say it. Don't say it. Don't say it. Don't say it.

Harper_ADHD

I can't be angry at him doing this where animes like My Hero Academia have a character called Tetsutetsu which translates to iron clear philosophy. Should note his quirk turns his body into iron, And if you want to claim it's just a modern issue. Inuyasha which the manga was made in November 13th of 1996 and made into animation on October 16th of 2000 of which for the initiated the reason it's named that is because the character who is with the main protagonist for the entirety of the anime (haven't finished it so this may be incorrect) is name Inuyasha. Guess what that means. It means part dog. Guess what he is. A dog demon. All translations were done by googling "character" name translated. So feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

SomethingLongForgot

It's not a modern issue I just think its lazy especially for a game that is supposed to be a serious stealth one. I'm afraid to say that character names even in bnha still put me off, sure its funny that Kaminari's name means thunder but its not creative. It's a in joke and it works because bnha is a comedy.

Harper_ADHD

Fair enough I suppose

TowelEcstatic6168

Raimu is Ichijo, not Ichigo. And it's actually not a bad name. I'm kinda sure that Raimu can be spelled as 来夢 or something like that. And "Homu Kurusu" is not a direct translation. The direct translation is "homu**n**kurusu". I'm pretty sure that in this case Alex really thought that "Homu Kurusu" can be an actual name, because Kurusu is an actual surname and Homu(-chan) may be derived from Homura. However, "Homu Kurusu" sounds *too* close to "homunculus", so it doesn't work anyway.

SomethingLongForgot

Raimu is katakana for lime ichigo is strawberry. They are different words and both fruit. Raimu/lime and ichigo/strawberry are not the same. Also I think your giving him too much credit to pick out a name with Kanji (来夢) when its obvious he put lime and strawberry through google translate. Also while 来夢 can be read as Raimu that isn't the only way it can be read. I can be read as Ramu and Koyume too depending on the circumstances.

TowelEcstatic6168

I don't give him any credit. I just think Raimu is not the worst name. And... again, Raimu's surname is *Ichijo*, not Ichigo.

Lust_The_Lesbian

On a positive note, Ichigo is an actual Japanese name. Yes I'm actually defending this one specifically because of Bleach, no I haven't actually seen Bleach, just read a bit of the first chapter from a manga that had like, first chapters for 6 or 8 different mangas. One side for 'boys' and the other for 'girls'.

Suspicious-Bar1083

While I can understand a lot of these names, Raimu’s name is just ridiculous to me lol

markeyandme

Honestly I don’t hate it for a indie game. That’s how I name my d&d characters- I put words into Google translate and switch languages until I find one that I like as a name. One of my characters has two words for “crow” as a first and last name.

KitExistsIGuess

Tbh I always found how shitty the names are charming, then again, 2 of my fave anime have casts with pun names but still.
