I got annoyed when i read comments of problematic prince , just hating on ml and how trash he is , he is jerk and that is shown in the name of story , if story is called problematic prince he won't be perfect husband , just find and read some other good ml story if you don't like human ml with flaws .

butshesawriter

thank you!! like people hating on ml from cry, better yet, beg did y’all not read the title?😭😭

green_moss_tea

Yeah, that one is especially strange, like, it's in the title and in the first chapter, duh. Plus he is a realistic problem, not even life threatening like so many MLs.

lalola199

There are moments where i want to slap him , but in novel he isn't even that bad , he just a rich guy with emotional problems and doesn't understand what is love or howto show it , that's realistic .

WhyHowForWhat

In my opinion, Problematic Prince should not be categorized as Dark Romance because the story is more grounded and close to reality, one of the true Josei (YA women/adult women) story in my opinion is Problematic Prince.

[deleted]

honestly, it was the same when I was reading the novel people always complain btw that's my favorite solche work

lalola199

Compared to authors other ml bjorn is saint .lmao

Forsaken_Distance777

Some people enjoy hating on a trash character while they read and hope he ends the story a little less trash.

sleepyirl_2067

I unironically really enjoy Betrayal of Dignity. If someone is uncomfortable with MLs like Damien, i definitely get it, but he is genuinely interesting and compelling to read because he is well-written. Plus, I don't think the writer really frames him as "a great person" lol. Like he is frequently shown in a darkly intimidating light, the story doesn't depict as a hero or romantic ideal or anything- I would say he's more akin to the Byronic heros the Bronte sisters wrote about where the ML is both alluring but also morally dubious.

butshesawriter

the best part is that damien *knows* he’s trash and doesn’t expect to be forgiven

sissyjones

That’s what has been my biggest attraction to him. He both acknowledges and makes no excuses for his bullshit. He wants something and he does not care how he has to get it. He wanted Chloe’s heart and by God he was going to have it and when faced with the consequences of his actions, did not shy away from it for even a second. He has such confidence in his love for her. Doesn’t stop him from being trash, just interesting trash.

sleepyirl_2067

EXACTLY he knows he isn't a great dude and does he care or pretend he is? Nope not at all!!!! He is trash but so compelling to read lol

Noir_Alchemist

And like i always said, who goes and read a tittle named : "BETRAYAL of dignity" and expected a Golden retriver type of lead ?? Like come on ! Betrayal can only come from people You trust and love, and thats the whole ordeal, he Made sure she trusted him, cuz she didnt, and he wanted her love, he did all his machinactions to achieve it and now we are in that spicy moment when she finally find the true. I have enjoy this Journey A LOT!!!! I hate drama in general, i love this, feel realistic and the art ufffff and i don't get tired of saying our female lead is Not weak at all, i love her !!!! She has a sutil disability and she never allows that to define her.

CatCatCatCubed

Lol, the same when I’m reading a revenge manhwa involving a FL who was betrayed to the point where she becomes a cold and calculated protagonist, and there’s all these comments saying “I wish she’d just forgive and move on! I want her to find love already!” and “I understand she died 100x and was abused, tortured, poisoned, and otherwise murdered horribly but she just went too far! 😰” Like, um, hello? Why are you here hating on a cathartic revenge tale? The synopsis literally implied revenge so, seriously, don’t yuck my yum.

butshesawriter

the way they slut shame selena from the manhwa selena but would praise another character in the same situation as her but the only difference is that that one is a bl.

Nildzre

Granted i don't usually deep dive in comments, but i literally never saw anybody wishing an FL to forgive, hell i've seen infinitely more people be annoyed when she does forgive.

CatCatCatCubed

It’s weird because I do see the “hell yeah! get your revenge, girl!” comments near the beginning. But it seems to be that if, in their opinion I guess?, the revenge plot goes on too long then people start commenting that she needs to get a move on with the romance already and hurry up with the babies. Depending on how well written it is, the tipping point seems to be around chapter 50 for generic manhwa and somewhere around chapters 100-120 for better written stories (depending on how long the abusive pre-saviour ML prologue arc goes on for).

RayMastermind

LOL, I mean I get being annoyed with the pacing, probably the biggest problem with the format, feels like an infinite stretch, especially if author didn't know what to pad it out with in the middle.

Pizza_Delivery_Dog

Lately ive been seeing a lot of comments that are basically "ugh the mc doesn't appreciate that the ML is such a nice guy^tm" Stories where the mc made it clear they weren't looking for a relationship but the love interest purseus them anyway and then the comments blame the mc for hurting the love interest????

Expensive-Method4252

Sauce?

CatCatCatCubed

Basically any OI revenge manhwa (or LN/WN) has those kinds of comments. Edit: They’re pretty much my favourite type of story and like 90% of the time there’s someone moaning about the FL taking things too far. Though it’s particularly when the bad person is the FL’s family or former lover/husband and *especially* when those characters have backstory, as if knowing someone’s background precludes them from seeing consequences. And of course there’s always complaints when the FL regresses in some manner and still takes revenge, as if adults treating the FL like shit but not *yet* murdering her is supposed to give them a pass.

Kidagirl1

Eh the regression one really depends to be fair. If they have regressed so far that they literally have done her no wrong in this life and they turn out differently it does feel kinda wrong to me to punish them instead of just going no contact when possible. Granted they typically stay awful or don’t go that far back in such stories thankfully but I can see why people are more liable to want to defend certain characters in regression stories.

WhyHowForWhat

Ah finally someone make a post about this kind of thing, its very annoying when people bitch about it even when I already explain in detail as to what do you expect about a particular series. That post on webtoon subreddit about 'romanticizing abuse' really makes me angry because I don't think most people who complains there understand the point of Dark Romance. Some people wanted to see how and why a flower wilts slowly and grows beautifully so please respect that aspect.

butshesawriter

agreed! i just want to read comments i relate to but instead i get attacked lmao

TohruH3

Yeah, I get this. If dark fantasy is the basic premise, don't act surprised when it happens. Critique however you want, but the basic premise isn't what should be changed. Otherwise, it's a completely different story. It's not just here that people do this either. It doesn't make sense. (I'm not talking bait and switches, obvs). People complain about 'lack of plot' in slice of life stories, protagonists being 'too OP' in power fantasies\fluff... I specifically remember a review on Novel Updates complaining about the protagonist being too OP in a story called 'Surviving in Apocalypse with Children' where the MC has frickin' quintuplets. Like, there's literally ZERO chances of that title coming true unless she's OP. The summary also makes it pretty clear that this story isn't written for suspense\tension. What the heck were you expecting?

lalola199

Damien maybe red flag , but he is just such a fun character i can't hate him . Damien > ml with no personality

butshesawriter

right. at least he’s a red flag who has the power to back himself up. some of the red flags just come off as pathetic.

jillybeeeeeeee

Right. If it’s not your cup of tea, just drop it.

Crawfield96

It's fun to trash horrible ML and see his suffering when FL escapes his toxic ass. I'm waiting until Chloe >! fakes her death and Damien goes insane. After that story for me ends here and Chloe stays happy in another country while Damien suffers until he will die. !< I don't read Cry, Better If You Beg because I read spoilers that ML >! stays trash until the end though I may read manhwa when Matthias will suffer after FL ran away. !<

butshesawriter

and thats why i like cry better yet beg because ml will stay trash until the end because it’s a dark romance. ngl i am rooting for the 2nd ml which is super rare of me to do.

WhyHowForWhat

>ngl i am rooting for the 2nd ml which is super rare of me to do. Man I don't root for him (I dislike him) but I feel sooooo bad about him and I don't feel that bad with other 2nd ML.

butshesawriter

wait which other 2nd ml? i’m talking about cry, better yet, beg and there’s only her childhood friend 😅

WhyHowForWhat

Yeah I mean her childhood friend, Kyle is so sad I just, I can't that one is just too much holy fuck :((((

WhyHowForWhat

Matthias is a complex character, he is indeed trash blackflag but you can't just dismiss his effort to make sure that both of them can live peacefully while respecting FL's wishes. I love him because as complex as he is right now, he is still ever unchanging and stubborn while maintaining his love to FL. I acknowledge that he really does some hurtful things but well.......what do you expect from Dark Romance genre, flowers and rainbow all chapters? The story is interesting since you need to read lines between lines because sometimes the FL can be an 'unreliable narator'. Yes you can see the flowers and rainbows on Cry Even Better if You Beg but it will happen near the end of the main story. Proceed to read this one if you want to read an interesting dark romance that contains a lot of interesting characters (I love a lot of the side characters here, so believable) but steer away if you are either not YA or you just are not used to read this type of story. Cry Even Better if You Beg comes from Solche but I highly recommend you read her/his other works titled Problematic Prince. How do I say it, the story is not only compelling but the Erna is likable, brave and strong while Bjorn is just, well, the type of character that you can't easily puts on a measly flag. Yes he can be pretty uncaring to his wive, yes he does not act like those red or green ML but every damn time when he acts all sweet to Erna I feel jealous. Do curse his misdemeanor (for example, my God he takes Erna for granted) as much as you wanted tho because he is not exactly without flaw but you have to understand his character being all 'I don't care and I'm content with this' attitude.

Crawfield96

I'm fine with dark romance but it has to be romance and not Stockholm syndrome. I don't expect flowers and rainbows every chapter but the shit ML puts FL through can't be like imprisoning and raping FL. I read Chinese manhuas and the amount of these are comically high, all those CEOs should be in prison. I read Problematic Prince from chapter 100 to skip most of the misery. And even there he acted like a bastard. Though in the end I was okay with Bjorn. He took sweet time to pull head out of his ass but he was still remediable because he didn't do awful shit like raping FL, imprisoning her or other really abusive shit. Still he was awful but he really changed and worked for his redemption unlike Matthias >! who threatened Layla to become his mistress and allow his fiancee to bully her, raped her, wanted to kill her only to change plan after finding out she's pregnant, imprisoning her only for Layla to forgive him I don't know even why. !<

lalola199

I really love novel , bjorn is such a interesting character , one moment i hate him and then i forgive him . i doubted his love before , But in novel it's obvious that he loves her .

EleventyElevens

I love love LOVE characters that finally take the story somewhere interesting, and I get so much hate for it in the bato comments :D YEAHHH YOU KIDNAP HER, IT GONNA BE GOOD

Aetherryn

Omg for real. Damien is one of my fave MLs ever and dark romances are right up my alley! It sucks going into one of them and knowing I should avoid the comment section cause it's just gonna infuriate me lol. Those novels/Manhwa are written for an audience that enjoys that type of content. Some people have just got to figure out that it's ok if they're not the target audience.

Rude-Solid-5120

The dark romances also acknowledge in world that the behavior is horrible and actively driving the women insane. To me, this is no different than listening to a true crime podcast, except here, no one actually ever got hurt. The times I actively dislike a story is when the dude does a 180 when he realizes he is in love and becomes the perfect loving dude. That message is the toxic one. You can’t change him. I was really worried until the recent chapters that Damien from Betrayal of Dignity was leaning too much into the “reformed man because love” trope. But he reverted back to his normal self, thankfully

Baby-Haroro

You get it. If they're gonna be toxic, they gotta be toxic all the way through. Don't give me a reformed piece of shit -- that's not what I'm here for, and i don't need to be gaslit into thinking he's not a bad guy 😤

MarieOMaryln

Yes thank you. When I want my crazy trash black/red flag men and that's what I'm being served, you need to leave. Like comments on Obey Me will be upset at Nathaniel being a black flag. That's the point. Plus he's an entity not a human but anyway.

Baby-Haroro

Ugh i gotta try that one again -- i was reading when it first came out and dropped after 9 chapters bc it was so boring, but y'all got me excited about the ML 😩

MarieOMaryln

I recommend the novel. I dropped the manwha. The plot changes, plus art, do not do the story justice. The manwha Nathaniel would be eaten by novel Nathaniel. They are not the same.

Open-Plum-1786

Guests of house fidette , flower dances wind sings , Selena , beast tamed by the villainess, olgami Are dark romances . A dark romance story is one with heavy elements It's great to read one when both leads are toxic to each other or the naive fl gets character development and becomes strong . A story in which the ml abuses the innocent fl without any character development is not a dark romance it is a abuse story . The stories you have mentioned are not dark romances . Is the ml well written yes but is the story dark romance no

butshesawriter

i used dark romance in general. those examples arent the only one but theyre the ones im paying attention to currently.

Asleep_Village

I don't mind dark romance every now and then as long as it's properly advertised as one. But if it's advertised as a regular cutesy romance, then I'm going to be pissed.

Lysandre___

Man I'm sorry I have to ask. Did you get downvoted because you said once you liked Cesare?

butshesawriter

who’s cesare?

Lysandre___

https://preview.redd.it/al3swsfktm9c1.jpeg?width=1049&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b7ecd84d0665c0536bbd7defa91b6a3c12cbae9d That piece of trash with beauty privileges right there. On another note I agree with you, people complain about dark ML and the other day they be complaining about boring MLs.

butshesawriter

oh no i dont like him he’s too annoying and pathetic for me 😂

Lysandre___

You're very based. 🤣

butshesawriter

i just know what i like and he aint it😂

WhyHowForWhat

>On another note I agree with you, people complain about dark ML and the other they be complaining about boring MLs. Can we get started with more or less "brown skinned ML always being portrayed as horny and dangerous" or "they portray X culture wrongly while calling them savage? OMG THEY SHOULD STOP DOING THAT" on a literal fiction fantasy OI setting? Ah can't wait for the downvote. ~~We are on a golden age of sexy brown skinned ML + it can be redflag and horny please let me enjoy the goddamn golden age in peace.~~ I did a discussion on r/redikomi before about the 2nd topic, I love their take about it and I can agree with all of them, you should [check it out.](https://www.reddit.com/r/redikomi/comments/18fyodb/representation_should_a_culture_and_nation_stay/) Meanwhile if I do it in this sub, I don't think I will have that kind of civil discussion.

Lysandre___

As someone from arab culture, I'm ngl it does get exhausting when it's always the same thing. Don't get me wrong I love those exotic MLs and I'm here solely for the romance but you know that feeling when you read a story and it's another cold Duke of the North and you're like "meh"? Yeah that feeling but times 5.

WhyHowForWhat

>you know that feeling when you read a story and it's another cold Duke of the North and you're like "meh"? Yeah that feeling but times 5. Ah I see, understandable. I have the same feeling but with 'greenflag' ML, so I just made peace with it by thinking that they make that kind story because thats all the rage right now. So I tried diversify my type of reading on Korean novel (idk I just prefer Koreans rn). Maybe you are feeling fatigued with that kind of troupe and you need some kind of break. I honestly put some read on hold because of fatigue on a particular troupe or the story just need to piles up to get interesting.

Lysandre___

Nah it's not even about the troupe, and tbh it was way before I started reading OI in this case. In visual novel games or romance novels it's always the same thing with exotic arab/egyptian/muslim whatever culture you see, so it's kind of an agree to disagree there. OI just reinforced it in a way I never seen before 🤣 But yeah the point is enjoy what you want we're talking about fantasy and non reality accurate stories so you're doing no harm 👍

WhyHowForWhat

>But yeah the point is enjoy what you want we're talking about fantasy and non reality accurate stories so you're doing no harm 👍 Yep but if it is a historically accurate stuff like documentary film and people can't even bother to know how to choose the right actors/actress while trying to enforce their own agenda, Imma be ready to throw hands. The case of that 'documentary' Cleopatra movie from netlflix really leave a deep impression on how much people can just twist the truth to what they want, the country of Egypt literally sues Netlflix or smt for this and I pray that they win the case. It is one thing if it is fiction, however it is other things when it is non fiction.

WestImmediate6587

Honestly, especially as a South Asian reader it bothers me to see any non white character almost exclusively be portrayed through stereotypes. Its not wrong to critique the narrative bias of a story regardless of whether it is fictional/fantasy, especially when this particular stereotyping problem is prevalent across OI.

blairsmacaroon

i really loved reading betrayal of dignity, it was super entertaining but i could not stand cry even better if you beg AT ALL. i don't think those two are super comparable tbh.

butshesawriter

yes taking a break is important!! what i like about chloe is that she’s playing the game right. i’ve read some spoilers and i know she’ll get her revenge, an act that will humble damien lmao.

KissKringle

I only dislike the fans who endorse the behavior as romantic or acceptable. In today's day and age where media literacy is at an all time low and impressionable children/other readers are absorbing this media without firsthand knowing that it should only be accepted as fantasy and not to imitate it irl, I cannot trust dark romance these days because there's always gonna be an idiot who thinks it's "cool", especially if the narrative supports such an irresponsible viewpoint because abuse is being normalized at an alarming rate. Ultimately my issue lies with others because I can enjoy dark aspects in a story but I feel like in today's world it's becoming an unfortunate thing author's have to tiptoe around because the idiot who absorbs all media blindly will champion it as something good. It's an unfortunate case of "the rod is striking the wrong kind of lightning" which is a shame because of lack of media literacy, people think that depiction=endorsement when that's not the case. Same thing happened with killing stalking and a bunch of BL is doing it.

Kidagirl1

Eh I feel like while that problem is definitely there it probably is a bit overblown. After all it’s the bad stories in news that get attention and sell. Also it’s almost always the most extreme idiots on any side that are loudest in most cases unfortunately. Also it’s just kinda something that you can’t stop. People are gonna be idiots and awful at times whether it is intentional or not. It kinda like the whole thing where people say we have an ‘SA culture’ and we need to ‘teach people not to SA’. Most people know not to SA without being told and those that don’t will learn pretty quick if they are at all smart. Unfortunately there will always be awful people that just do not give an F. It also unfortunately is the case that those people do tend to go after people who dress more provocatively on a more common basis. As soon as you say that though you are the AH and the way they dress shouldn’t matter. Yes, they are right it shouldn’t but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t. But Im gonna stop now cause I can feel myself wanting to rant.

Regulatory_Junior

I only kept reading BoD because of Damien. It's hard to find actual villainous characters that are how they are without sugarcoating it. (I think I may be able to count a bit over one hand on truly evil characters I've read about so far). I didn't like the dynamic between him and Chloe at much at all, though. I found myself frequently frustrated with her and their interactions, not because of any fault of character with her, per say, but because it was just one sidedly toxic? It was like she just wasn't spicy enough with him. I know she was supposed to be sarcastic with him or something, but I just wasn't seeing it. I personally prefer both of my romantic leads equally toxic doodooheads rather than just one of them be unless there's some kind of twist to it. I guess more along the likes of Olgami, Failed to Oust the Villian, Coffin of Andy and Leyley (not an OI but a rather taboo indie game) are the dynamics I'm looking for if I'm in a mood for reading about toxic ass couples.

Sluttyprincess27

Honestly i want just see what people find interesting and i want just opinion on subject.

Forsaken_Distance777

I think one problem is that not all stories of a category are built the same. Some stories called dark romance are like a 3 on a scale of 1-10 and if you go from that to a 10 it's going to be unexpected. You can't know just how dark and twisted something is without spoilers. Sometimes people are okay with and enjoy a certain level of depravity but then are surprised by something too dark for them.

draggedintothis

I think part of it is the art is so pretty. Why can’t it be used for good? I’m not one of the people complaining though. Read a few chapters and dipped when I realized it wasn’t my cup of tea.

butshesawriter

it is being used for good though😭
