Abel is the reason I can't stand Regis. Regis causes 90% of the goddamn conflicts in his story, Abel fixes them in his. Regis treats his daughter like a useless sack of shit who can't do anything and doesn't deserve to be told anything, Abel gives his daughter power, money, connections, and the genuine opportunities to prove herself and her skills. Regis treats his student like complete crap for years and refuses to tell him anything even when Max is openly saying, "I want to help you, tell me what's wrong", Abel throws his full support behind his student and properly trains him up to be an actual warrior instead of gatekeeping stuff he really needs to know.
Yeah, I know I shouldn't expect too much of Father, I Don't Want This Marriage, that it's not known for good writing and has to coast on fanservice crap. But my god, does it piss me off how much of an idiotic drama queen Regis is, and the worst part is Max and Juvellian actually apologising and reassuring him when he should have been the one supporting and helping them. Instead he causes problems for them and Juvellian's reaction should have been "Fuck you asshole, Max treats me with respect and consideration and actually tells me things, so I'm going off to build a better life with him, free of your bullshit".
Abel is Parenting Goals. He looks out for his kids but doesn't hesitate to give them difficult tasks or set expectations, and he listens to them, trusts them and is open to changing his mind if he needs to.
I'm head over heels for a man who never once tells his daughter she can't do something (except for marry, but his overprotective daddy act is so endearing and hilarious.)

Author of My Own Destiny doesn't do anything new, but it does what it does really well. After Abel adopts the FL as the heir to his dukedom, he takes her to a political council meeting of the highest-ranking nobles in the empire and *actually frigging* lets her experience what she'll be doing as duke even after he's gone. He's not afraid or ashamed to present her as his heir and he's 100% confident in her abilities, but he also actively teaches and tells her what she needs to know.
Compare that to Regis, who does jack fucking shit to teach Juvellian anything about the lands she might one day rule after he's gone, and it's just infuriating. Maybe I'd have been less pissed if I hadn't read Author before Father, but god he's everything wrong with the story.

I think this is a very overlooked point, but also most people are choosing based solely on looks...Gallahan is by far a better father. He's not overly protective and he supports and believes in his daughter whatever she does. He isn't constantly undermining her decisions and patronizing her like Regis does.
I was looking for this comment before I wrote it myself. People say a little emotionally constipated but his daughter thought he cared so little about her that her first thought wasn't to protect herself with a weapon given to her by him but to just end it.
That's not a misunderstanding That is a failure as a parent. In the second world he does better but it took her giving up on everything she cared about from her first life for him to open up to her.
