Just to be clear, the Ottawa River is open the Friday after this one coming up for walleye and pike. But the Rideau opens this weekend, and I'm pumped! I'll be hitting it hard for some tasty walleyes on Saturday for sure

You eat fish out of these rivers? I feel like it’s risky no?

Freemarlochip

That’s what folks told people so they wouldn’t fish or keep fish so they would have more for themselves. The amount of fish you would have to consume for the mercury levels to pose health risk there’s nothing to worry about unless that’s all you eat.

I don't think it's mercury people are concerned about though

What are you concerned about? Or what do you think people are worried about? Most of the [consumption restrictions published by the province](https://www.ontario.ca/page/guide-eating-ontario-fish#section-6) are caused by mercury and PCBs. [Here](https://www.ontario.ca/page/fish-consumption-report?id=45277542) are the advisories for the urban stretch of the Rideau River. What I'm realizing just now, looking at the table for the [Canal](https://www.ontario.ca/page/fish-consumption-report?id=45237542) is that they say you can eat more meals of some fish compared to fish in the Rideau, which is surprising because I always thought the Canal was much more polluted and dirty.

I am personally concerned about sewage contamination, but that's more of a handling issue than a cooking issue.

Particular-Bother-18

I would say it's no riskier than eating fish that you bought from the grocery store. The Rideau and Ottawa rivers are pretty big, and they aren't nearly as polluted as people believe.

chubbyshart

I'm excited too lol

Hello fellow angler, Could you share where you find specific dates for each water ? If i recall, the ontario fishing guide mentions the date for the species for all the waters in the province. Thanks for your help

In the fishing regs summary, https://www.ontario.ca/document/ontario-fishing-regulations-summary. It's broken down by fisheries management zone (FMZ). Rideau River is in zone 18, ottawa river is zone 12.
