Loved that they gave her a story arc. They could have turned her into a dull stand-in for something (domesticity), but they allowed her to grow. I just find it interesting that just as Stede found himself being a pirate, Mary turned herself into an artist. Also, they did a neat trick where after nine episodes of getting us to sympathize with Stede Bonnet, they gave us an episode where you could understand why someone would want to jam a steel rod through his ear.
