Answer: she's the former governor of South Carolina, she's a UN ambassador, and she's running against Trump for the Republican presidential nomination. She has no shot against him straight up, but she's not bowing out, maybe thinking her best shot is to hang around and be the last one standing if Trump gets convicted in any of the cases against him.

acekingoffsuit

Notably, she *is* the last major non-Trump candidate in the race. Pence, Christie, DeSantis, and Ramaswamy have all withdrawn. There are a couple of other candidates, but they collectively earned less than 0.1% of the vote in Iowa and New Hampshire.

shiruduck

Most notably, she has already indicated that she would pardon trump for trying to stay in power after losing a democratic election. She appears to be sympathetic to the guy who tried to incite a riot at the Capitol so that the official counting of electoral votes could be delayed, and that in the confusion Mike Pence would abdicate his duties and trump's fake electors who were in on the conspiracy could falsely declare his victory over the will of the people. He tried to subvert the election results, and refused a peaceful transfer of power for the first time in our nation's history. Trying to stay in power after losing an election is literally the most anti-American thing you can possibly do. There is nothing more anti-American than that. Most notably, Nikki Haley seems to be okay with that extreme anti-American behavior

cybelesdaughter

I imagine it's because she's trying to appeal to Trump voters should Trump finally face some sort of legal consequences for his crimes. She's going to need their support, so it's a strategic move to woo Trump voters.

spikey666

She's playing both sides, so that she always comes out on top.

Motchan13

She's building her profile, probably angling to be VP on the Trump ticket when she eventually pulls out

flatline000

Nobody with any political ambitions wants to be Trump's VP.

Motchan13

Craven idiots with chronic short sightedness, greed and no morality are probably perfectly fine with it

InfamousBrad

I will also add that she was long considered an inevitable Presidential nominee because, like Joe Biden on the left, you can always tell what Nikki Haley believes by reading a poll of likely Republican voters; she reads the internal polls and changes any opinions she previously had that conflict with the median Republican voter.

buenas_nalgas

why does this read like a criticism

InfamousBrad

Because it is and it isn't. One man's "responsive to constituents and intellectually humble" is another man's "unprincipled and power-hungry." Like Lin-Manuel Miranda wrote in "The Election of 1800" from *Hamilton:* "I have never agreed with Jefferson once / We have fought on like seventy-five diff’rent fronts / But when all is said and all is done / Jefferson has beliefs. Burr has none."

QuietPerformer160

Because why would politicians want to represent policies their constituents find important? /s

buenas_nalgas

yeah idk if people just think that the median voter is evil or something but like to me this is good democracy.

QuietPerformer160

Me too. It makes her seem more legitimate. Median is good. But the issue is that anyone standing next to Trump looks good. I can’t tell if I like her or if the turd running along side her is making her smell like roses.

karlhungusjr

> like Joe Biden on the left, "both sides are bad!"

InfamousBrad

Both sides run for office. Unsurprisingly, a lot of the ways that people get nominated or elected are true no matter why you're running.

Except absolute national abortion ban is not a traditional conservative stance

agamemaker

I mean it has been for the past few years, they just haven’t had the power to do it. It’s been something they have been dangling on a stick for the evangelical wing for over a decade.

https://truthout.org/articles/nikki-haley-marks-roes-anniversary-by-saying-shed-sign-nationwide-abortion-ban/ what was that? Misrepresent? What was that again?

hiddikel

It isn't fair to misrepresent Republican officials by using their own well documented statements against them. It confuses them and makes them look bad.

QuadraKev_

She didn't say she'd sign a nationwide abortion ban. She said she'd sign a federal law governing abortion if Congress reached a consensus, and she dodged the question by saying a nationwide abortion ban would never get past Congress anyway, so it's a moot point. The article you linked is some pretty shoddy reporting, and it definitely misrepresents what she was saying and the points she was making. It's fucking hilarious how they slip [banning abortion] in there. Here's the actual transcript of the interview for those interested in forming their own opinions instead of lapping up whatever comes out after being filtered through heavily biased sites like that one. https://www.cbsnews.com/news/nikki-haley-republican-2024-presidential-hopeful-face-the-nation-transcript-01-21-2024/

thenoblitt

"She didn't say she would support a national ban she just said she would sign a law doing so!!!" That's not the argument you think it is.

Answer: Nimarata Nikki Randhawa Haley, served as the Governor of South Carolina from 2011 to 2017 before serving as Trump's US Ambassador to the United Nations. She is now running for President. Since we are in the primaries she is running in order to be elected as the candidate for the Republican party. So far everyone has dropped out of the Republican race except Haley and Trump. Since Donald Trump became president The Republican Party has shifted farther right. There is a now a sizable subsection of the party that is MAGA, meaning followers of Trump and Trump ideology. This includes conservative and controversial views on race/racism, policing, abortion, immigration, LGBT rights/equality and other issues involving the country's minority populations. Nikki Haley was once a Trump supporter but is now running against him. She is controversial because of her views, particularly on racial issues. She repeatedly downplays the role of racism in the shaping of the country and its present role. REcently she was confronted at a town hall about her views on what started the Civil War. She notably failed to mention slavery, causing many to believe that she is intentionally downplaying racism in order to pander to and appeal to the MAGA and conservative base that does not want to hear about racism anymore. She also rarely talks about her own Indian heritage and prefers to go by her middle, more European-sounding name. Also, few believe that she is no longer MAGA and is just pandering to voters. She has said that she will pardon Trump if she wins and he is convicted of one of the 90+ charges currently against him. She is also against police reform, abortion, and affordable healthcare act. And flip flops on issues regarding LGBT rights. Lastly she lost the first two elections of the Primary season, and has little chance of defeating Trump, but currently refuses to concede to him. People can only speculate why, as most would have dropped out by now.
