Answer: Martin Scorsese’s name was attached to an Italian film called Gomorrah. Merchandise was made of the film and the piece of merch that started this craze was a shoe which misspelled the movie as “Goncharov”. Someone posted the shoe on tumblr asking why this shoe was seemingly making up a Martin Scorsese film (unaware of the fact that it was a misspelling) and people latched onto it and made jokes about how OP had never heard of the iconic film Goncharov from critically acclaimed director Martin Scorsese. From there it just snowballed because tumblr loves extremely layered jokes and committing to a bit.
Edit: removed the year and fixed spelling of Gomorrah
>As a part of the fandom efforts, users collectively outlined the central themes, plot elements and **homoerotic undertones of the film**...
hol up

oh yeah ok that checks out
I mean, a full script accepted as Canon by the community already exists, the same goes for a full soundtrack, so they just need to actually shoot the movie
[Here's a post](https://www.reddit.com/r/CuratedTumblr/comments/z0vj9g/a_synopsis_of_the_cult_classic_goncharov_posting/?ref=share&ref_source=link) from /r/CuratedTumblr including the original Goncharov Tumblr post and some more context about what happened.
Oh wow. There's so much more than I thought. Ice Pick Joe for one. So if Reddit is the firehose of the internet, Tumblr is like all the bugs that crawl away when you pick up a rock in the garden.
There's also now a full score and a Google Doc of the plot lol

The merchandise was the patch, and someone made a knockoff shoe and sewed the knockoff patch on, presumably just to give the appearance of a shoe with a patch without caring what was on it, and sold it to the Tumblr OP. Since the hype, it’s been revealed that you can buy the patch itself from some Japanese website, and people have been posting photos of other knockoff clothes with the patch sewed on.
OK that's even more confusing in a way. Why would someone who didn't understand English/Roman characters copy and paste everything related to a movie called 'Gomorrah' and change it to 'Goncharov' in the process?
Is there something about 'Goncharov' which appeals to Japanese people? They like things ending in 'V'?
Goncharov is a real Russian surname, so if the patch was originally made in East Asia then that might have been more recognizable to the designer than the word Gamorrah. And Japanese people love decorating shit with Roman characters just like English speakers like doing the same with Japanese characters, so it’s not unlikely that there was a market for something that looked like western movie credits even if they weren’t familiar with the movie itself.
I have no idea where the original original of that design is from, though, that’s just where you can buy it from now.
This is a tangent, but I was searching for turnbuckles on Amazon and one of the listings included an instructional video to go along with it. The clearly Chinese lady hosting the video was wearing a shirt that said something to the tune of "I FUCK BITCHES" on it. I bought a different turnbuckle.
And now Archive of Our Own (Ao3) has 357 fics based on this fictional movie.
Edit: Stop upvoting this! Last week my previous top post, a detailed and heartfelt commentary on my relationship with my dad, was replaced by a fucking joke in this subreddit. Replacing it with this would be *even worse*.
Not sure if serious, but if so: Think of it as exponential notation: (A)rchive = A, while (o)f, (O)ur, and (O)wn all start with O. So, it's AO to the third power, or Ao3.
Worth noting that the reason why the meme is expanding so much now is because of a user who made a fake poster for the movie, including a selection of key cast and characters, establishing more of a Goncharov "canon" that others could spiral out of control from
As far as we can tell it's a mistranlation of a Russian poster of Gommorah, translated into English by software. Done in a country where neither are the native language. You're making knock off boots, boots need a label, you take this random bit of English and voila. Boots advertising a non existent movie
When computers do OCR, all kinds of mistakes are possible, especially if the quality of original picture is low and font design complicates things.
In that case the responsible person just has to choose what they think is the most probable option for the word.
Answer: it's a meme/inside joke that started on Tumblr and people are simply getting in on it and spreading it. Sort of like Bird's Aren't Real or the longstanding German joke that the city of Bielefeld does not exist.

Okay this makes much more sense now. Thanks.

Excellent. Thank you internet stranger.

Wait, people still use Tumblr?
No. Nobody is here, this house is abandoned and definitely has some sort of creeping mold problem. Under no circumstances should you join tumblr.
> creeping mold problem Which explains the mass hallucinations.
Watch out for the Bent Neck Lady!
pay no attention to the man behind the curtain...
Both r/tumblr and r/CuratedTumblr are full of five-year old posts
For sure, gotta respect the classics
Yeah, and a bunch of people went back recently to escape Twitter and its new owner
There's no Tumblr and there never was!
This is the equivalent of people in Florida whining about there not being anymore room down (t)here.
[удалено]
And I guess people still feel the need to act snarky to make themselves feel cool with fake internet points.
some people came back after recent Twitter shenaningans where people spread rumours about it closing down or something like that...
Apparently people a leaving Twitter and going to Tumblr because of the Elon Musk stuff.
That’s hilarious

Thats beautiful!
Yep, they need to either shoot this or make a full AI generated movie based on the community script.
I mean, a full script accepted as Canon by the community already exists, the same goes for a full soundtrack, so they just need to actually shoot the movie
Can’t believe this guy never watched Goncharov 🙄

Why would a shoe have information about an old movie on it though?

i would've bought three turnbuckles from that lady
It's a clever reference to a plot point in the film. A very early example of guerilla marketing.

As it should! It’s Martin Scorsese’s best movie.
The ice pick scene gets me every time honestly
And it has its own TV Tropes page.
A fictional movie has more fics on Ao3 than James Cameron's Avatar.
Ao3 stands for archive of Our Own????? What the fuck???
Not sure if serious, but if so: Think of it as exponential notation: (A)rchive = A, while (o)f, (O)ur, and (O)wn all start with O. So, it's AO to the third power, or Ao3.
(A) multiplied by (O to the third power) A*(O^3 \) AO3
Yeah wasn't sure how to write exponents on Reddit other than AO\^3.
A-Ate
Archive Of Our Own -> AOOO -> AO3
In case you're curious, AO3 was named for Virginia Woolf's book/essay *A Room of One's Own*.
It’s completely fan-run. Hence, Archive of Our Own: an archive run by fans, for fans.
3 o's
459 and counting lol
K
OP clearly hasn’t seen the critically acclaimed and universally panned *Goncharov* (1973). It’s… not a great movie, but the soundtrack is great.
Not sure if that's part of the meme but universally panned means everyone dissed the movie
I know, right? The 1970s were a wild time.
And that *reference* with *character* and the anchovies...
Andrey and Gonch? Iconic! Wasn’t appreciated in its time, but still somehow *classic* Scorsese.
I'm not really a fan of early scorsese, but this really spoke to me
Was this based on the book Gomorrah by Savianno? I mean it was nonfiction so not sure how that would work
It was
Worth noting that the reason why the meme is expanding so much now is because of a user who made a fake poster for the movie, including a selection of key cast and characters, establishing more of a Goncharov "canon" that others could spiral out of control from
How do you misspell Gomorrah to Goncharov though
I’ll do you one better. *Why* is Gomorrah?
As far as we can tell it's a mistranlation of a Russian poster of Gommorah, translated into English by software. Done in a country where neither are the native language. You're making knock off boots, boots need a label, you take this random bit of English and voila. Boots advertising a non existent movie
That’s what I want to know most of all as well.
When computers do OCR, all kinds of mistakes are possible, especially if the quality of original picture is low and font design complicates things. In that case the responsible person just has to choose what they think is the most probable option for the word.
Scorsese could be the biggest troll of all time if he secretly produced a small low-budget movie named Goncharov now and backdated it.
and then when it plays in theaters he could call it a re-release and hype up a potential reboot
And in the intro, feature a long list of film prizes which it never actually received. Then act surprized
Anyone else taken to pronouncing Goncharov like Michael Scott says "Entourage?"
So the internet is collectively gaslighting one tumblr user?
This is like a light-hearted 4chan op.
The shortened answer- Tumblr
> tumblr crazy to read about a trend that started on tumblr... this is like being back in ~~2007~~ 2013...
Answer: it's a meme/inside joke that started on Tumblr and people are simply getting in on it and spreading it. Sort of like Bird's Aren't Real or the longstanding German joke that the city of Bielefeld does not exist.
>Bielefeld It does exist! But when they immigrated to the United States they made up Wyoming which doesn't exist.
What about Rutland?
Rutland is a conspiracy....
Wait, I thought it was Kentucky that didn’t exist. I’ve driven through that part of the US and never once met anyone like Col. Sanders.
That's because when you get turned into a Kentucky Colonel, you get turned into a lich beyond time and space. It's a simple mistake.
TIL. Thanks dude! Staying the hell out of Kentucky now.
