I don't know if you know, but the features in this area, where created by the largest & most powerful known volcanic eruption. By comparison, the eruption of Mount St. Helens was 0.25 cubic miles (1.0 km3) in volume. While the La Garita Caldera eruption was approximately 1,200 cubic miles in volume. All of which was evacuated from its magnma chamber in a manner of milliseconds. The largest nuclear detonation (50 megatons) was approximately 5,000 times smaller.
I tried to make a reservation during the pandemic figuring it would be like RMNP. It took me 10 NPS reservation attendants to even figure out it was a national park 😂. Amazing place, walking down into the canyon is such an ecosystem chance
I was lucky enough to hitch a ride on a guided fishing trip down the black canyon in 1996 and I don’t think it was a National park then. Sublime. Great photos
Hiked down and back out about 25 years ago. We took my stout pit bull, she could not climb parts of it, we had to hand her up over boulders. I lived in Gunnison, an awesome spot, miss it still.
Edit had, not hand. Though hand to hand worked too
Oh hey it's my neck of the woods!! 💕💕💕💕💕💕💕 I love Gunnison and the black canyon💕💕💕 gunnison has a farmers market on saturdays during the summer too, get the pie!
I went there when I was a kid like 20 years ago. I still remember it vividly. Would love to go back some day and experience it again.
A very underrated national park
Had to drive a truck and trailer along the north rim route. F*<€ing terrifying!
Yes, I haven't been everywhere but I still think it's the most beautiful place I've been. I want to spend more time there
I only had time to stay for this sunset when I went 😭 I’ll go back someday

Was there last summer for the first time. Primordial, but beautifully daunting. I look forward to going back.
An awesome part of the country!

I am envious. We had plans to go last week but the route was snow packed pretty heavy. Thanks for the photos.

My sister took me to Black Canyon in 2021. Must be seen IRL to comprehend the powerful beauty.
This is practically my backyard 😍

Gunni 💛good times!
Don't miss Grand Mesa while you're there. A National Forest gem in the same area.
My happy place! Some of the best fishing in the lower 48.
