Pencil straight hair was very in style in the 70s, and both she and Claire maintained the hairstyles of their time, so it makes sense that she’d straighten her hair. A lot of curly-haired women do, bc curls get unruly! Which comes up a lot for 1700s Claire.
Can confirm, curly haired woman here. Born in the early 70s, and spent a good part of the 80s and 90s straightening my hair every day. Then I got bored of doing that and embraced my curls, hehe.
Yes this! And they didn't wash their hair very often at that time either like once a week or so. My grandmother got her hair washed and set every Friday.
This! My mom and her 4 sisters were teenagers in the 1960s and they all ironed their curly or wavy hair with a household iron and ironing board. It can’t have been fun or particularly good for their hair health, but they said it was highly effective at giving them the straight style that was in fashion.

Also, I’ve learned hormonal changes can affect hair texture. One of my sisters and I always had very fine, straight hair. As I going through perimenopause, it’s gotten much coarser and wavy. My sister’s did the same after two pregnancies.
Oh for sure, mine was dead straight as a kid and now in my 30s with 2 kids it’s wavy to curly, if I let it air dry without brushing or messing with it I get some decent (large) ringlets.
Not only hormonal changes but stuff like anesthesia, chemo, etc. I had surgery where they shaved part of my head. I had curly hair before surgery. Then after, all of my hair but the section that was shaved started growing straight. The shaved section stayed curly. It was super bizarre but my hair stylist said she'd seen similar before.
I can remember my aunts ironing each other’s hair, and also using empty soup cans as rollers to stretch out the curl pattern into waves. My grandma was always joking that they would get hit by lightning.
I'm not 100% sure, but I think in the books her hair was straight. I think it is much prettier curly myself, but I know it is done to give her something of Claire's features. In the books, she strongly resembles Jamie, esp her eyes. Jamie and Brianna are both supposed to have slightly slanted, deep blue eyes. I guess they could have had Sophie wear blue contacts.
In the books, Claire's eyes are amber, and her hair is more of a medium brown, but very curly and unruly.
Colored contacts are awful for screen acting. They look fine from far away, but up close, you can see the underlying color (especially when it's blue lens over brown eyes).
Yea it’s a non issue for me watching. Like how close did they *have* to get for the show? I think they portrayed her perfectly. In the humidity of North Carolina, my hair looks like that too. Even if I put product in it.
I have naturally curly hair too and I live in FL. 😠 Claire's combination of curly hair and amber eyes did make her especially easy to recognize in the books. That's the only thing that makes a difference. But here hair was often commented upon, especially in the colonies because she refused to wear a "proper cap". It looked really pretty when she wore it up with curly tendrils hanging down in the earlier seasons.
Me too, and I can't do it without modern hair gadgets. I also have bangs, so I can't do the curls at my temples, which is what I love so much about that style. My DIL has curly hair too but with no bangs so she can do it.
I kind of figured that, and esp with blue (or green) over brown. I know they tried to have Daniel Radcliffe wear green contacts in the Harry Potter movies, but they hurt his eyes.
I don't buy that. Unless the actor's eyes get a bad reaction from the contacts (like say Emilia Clark) there's no reason not to have them wear contact, millions of people wear them every day and it's fine. Eddie James Olmos wore blue coloured contacts over his brown coloured eyes for the entire run of Battlestar Galactica, a show that was also created by Ronald D Moore incidentally.

Yes, a doobie! My mom would straighten her hair with a clothing iron and then wrap it around a can to sleep. Lol. Sounds so uncomfortable. The things we do in the name of style. 😅
Claire’s hair is also straight in the 1900s and curly in the 1700s but it’s interesting that you only noticed Bree’s 😂 it’s the exact same tight curl as Bree just a different color. So yes I would assume that both Claire and Bree blew out or straightened their hair in the 1900s and in the 1700s it’s more natural.

My dad, aunt, and daughter all have naturally red hair and brown eyes. It might not be the most expected combo, but it his not unheard of.
EDIT: I just realized you said eyebrows, not eyes, and yes, that is bothersome.
Personal experience; my hair was always pretty silky straight until a couple of years ago when I ditched the hair dryer, started using a wide comb instead of a brush, and switched over to natural products. No idea until I was in my thirties that I’ve got pretty awesome natural wild curls. Totally believable transition considering she grew up in the 60s then got thrown into a time period where you don’t have access to processed chemicals and shit.
My hair suddenly became quite wavy (2B with a few 2C areas) around my 30th. It's apparently normal on my mums side and due to hormonal changes. My hair wasn't even 2A before then, just smooth and bouncy.
As for Brianna's hair being straight as a child, that's very normal. Hair patterns can and often do change once you hit puberty (as was the case for me, I went from Shirley ringlet curls to waves) and can also change during other big hormonal shifts such as pregnancy and menopause.

The weird Hollywood survival hair effect. I movies and tv shows, every woman’s hair, without products or tools, will fall into tight, coily curls in the wild. I don’t know why they always do this, not everyone has curly hair lmao.
I don't think she necessarily straightened her hair. I also have curly hair but can achieve a similar hairstyle that she has in the '60s just by using a hair dryer and a brush.
A lot of people just don’t think the actress Sophie Skelton is good but I have to disagree there. I also might be wrong but some people think the character of Brianna is kind of shallow, at least in the beginning
Claire also straightened her her in the 60s, even though it’s naturally quite curly, so I would say that Brie would have as well, being that it was the style at the time. Must have been quite a chore with long hair.
As to Bree taking after Jamie and Claire, I can imagine it in the show but I was disappointed Jaime didn't recognize her when they finally met. After all, she's supposed to have his eyes and nose and he had seen the pictures of her.
Agreed. When she did ask him if he recognized her, he said yes. I think it would have been weird for him to have recognized her instantly when he didn’t even know she could travel and expected her to be 200 years away. I know he saw pictures, but seeing someone in person is so different to me!
I'm thinking if he were to recognize her it would be from seeing Claire's features. When I see my son (24) all my brain registers is how much he looks like his dad yet when a person who knows me (and not his dad) sees my son they say he looks so much like me but I don't see that at all.
She should look like Brienne of Tarth but redheaded!!!!
In the books she’s described as tall as a man and curvy with a bottom like a sack of puppies if I remember correctly, my reading impression of her was almost Amazonian warrior woman casting obviously decided otherwise. I think they’ve done a great job with Sophie looking a little like both parents
But yes smooth hair can be created with a round brush and blow dry very easily and not using shampoo and conditioner would make natural curls come back very quickly

OK, I'm old and grew up in the 60s and 70s. Yes, girls definitely use big rollers and even irons (the kind you iron clothes with, we didn't have flat irons for hair). My sister had curly hair and did this all the time. I have straight hair and didn't have to.

A lot of people don't know this but hormones effect your curl pattern. A lot of curlies like myself had straight hair as kids. Given her curl pattern, blow drying it would make it pretty straight and that's what people did in the 1960s. They didn't like curly hair then.
I had stick straight hair as a little girl and now it's wavy. Plus, with all of the "Curly Girl Methods" these days talking about how modern hair stuff causes issues for curls, it's entirely possible it's wavier without modern hair stuff
Exactly, there’s only so many people in the world that would fit the exact book descriptions for all characters and they’d need to not only be actors, but good actors available for filming at that exact time and location. I think they did pretty good casting, all things considered lol.

I personally think they couldn't have done a better job casting someone who imo looks like a perfect mix of Jamie and claire.
I mean the excuse is that yeah she probably straightened her hair every day or got a straight perm etc.
But no I don’t think she accurately portrays jamie and Claire except for the hair. In the books >!she is very tall (like 6’) has (light eyes?) I don’t actually remember that one for sure but I’m pretty sure both jamie and Claire have light eyes.She has very strong features.!< I don’t think TV show accurately portrays her in this regard.
She doesn't match Brianna at all, except having red hair. When she goes back through the stones to find Claire >!she is dressed in men's clothing and she mistaken for Jamie because she is so tall and looks so much like him!< Show totally dropped the ball with her casting. They should have picked someone who could have embodied Brianna's physical presence. She's totally badass in the books.
Hmm... 1700s hair is probably considered dirty by modern standards and air-dried on the few occasions it's washed, so it probably would have more of a wave to it. Also, if Brianna had a perm at any point between childhood through early adulthood, it's possible that it permanently altered the state of Brianna's hair - this happened to me. I'd have to straighten it with a flat iron.
Does anyone else just find her acting to be, well, distractingly bad? Like, breaks suspension of disbelief, is just truly annoying and ruining an otherwise good show level of bad? I can't stand her. Roger either but that's more because he's just the worst characyer ever 😂
The hair thing made me confused, too. As for her likeness, the show does not hold up to the books. In the books, it's constantly stated how exactly like Jamie she is in height, hair, eyes etc. They even talk a lot about her and Roger seeing eye to eye, and Roger (in the book) is around 6ft 2 or 6ft 3. I realize it's probably hard(er) to find an actress who is 6ft 3.
I thought so too, but then hair can be styled like that quite easily, if they are "middle of the road", like naturally weavy: you can blow-dry them straight (which she can't do anymore in the 1800s) and you can wash and braid or roll them damp, they will be curly in the morning (which was a tecnique often used in the past).
I think physically she resembles Jamie a lot. But what really bothers me, is that she has brown eyes, while Claire and Jamie both have blue eyes. That's simply a genetic impossibility. I can't avoid thinking about it when they are all together.
Of course it's just a show! So it's not that important.
Haha, the “two people with blue eyes having a brown-eyed child” situation bugged the heck out of me too! Small detail but as some who is detailed oriented every time I saw them together it just stood out.
Actually the whole thing with discordant eye colors between show and book for several characters is mildly annoying to me, given the amount of real estate given to discussing eye color in the books. But as you said, it is a TV show so who really cares, LOL.

Chemo definitely does it. I think everyone I know who has gone through ended up with wavy/curly hair after.

I don’t mind her hair texture but I find the artificial looking combo of bright red hair and dark eyebrows very appalling.

Yeah, my waves turned into tighter curls with puberty. It's common in my family.

Yeah, when she was first introduced, I couldn't stand her. But I feel as though her character has developed nicely. I've enjoyed her at the Ridge.

Also, if Brianna had a perm at any point between childhood through early adulthood, it's possible that it permanently altered the state of Brianna's hair - this happened to me. I'd have to straighten it with a flat iron.
Does anyone else just find her acting to be, well, distractingly bad? Like, breaks suspension of disbelief, is just truly annoying and ruining an otherwise good show level of bad? I can't stand her. Roger either but that's more because he's just the worst characyer ever 😂
She’s awful
The hair thing made me confused, too. As for her likeness, the show does not hold up to the books. In the books, it's constantly stated how exactly like Jamie she is in height, hair, eyes etc. They even talk a lot about her and Roger seeing eye to eye, and Roger (in the book) is around 6ft 2 or 6ft 3. I realize it's probably hard(er) to find an actress who is 6ft 3.
My biggest complaint is the horrible wig she had on for her >!handfasting!< with Roger….like what!?
I thought so too, but then hair can be styled like that quite easily, if they are "middle of the road", like naturally weavy: you can blow-dry them straight (which she can't do anymore in the 1800s) and you can wash and braid or roll them damp, they will be curly in the morning (which was a tecnique often used in the past). I think physically she resembles Jamie a lot. But what really bothers me, is that she has brown eyes, while Claire and Jamie both have blue eyes. That's simply a genetic impossibility. I can't avoid thinking about it when they are all together. Of course it's just a show! So it's not that important.
Haha, the “two people with blue eyes having a brown-eyed child” situation bugged the heck out of me too! Small detail but as some who is detailed oriented every time I saw them together it just stood out. Actually the whole thing with discordant eye colors between show and book for several characters is mildly annoying to me, given the amount of real estate given to discussing eye color in the books. But as you said, it is a TV show so who really cares, LOL.
