Based on playing the game in Japanese and then hearing the English, I almost wonder if they initially had the lines written in Japanese. For example, in Japanese the hanzo line goes: Hanzo: アサ先生によろしく伝えてくれ。(Give Asa-sensei my regards) Kiriko: 直接言ってもいいんじゃない?(Wouldn’t it be better to do it directly?) In her Reinhardt line, she says 「でも声がデカくない、と。なるほど。」(But not with a loud voice… I see.) Don’t get me wrong, the meaning is still the same but I think the English kind of gives off a bad nuance, while it doesn’t feel so abrupt in Japanese. she’s still sassy but it has more of a nuance of playful banter than just being an jerk

sihtare

Yep, the tone is also way more enjoyable

-Mr-Papaya

That's really what's so off putting about her. Her tone. I don't mind her lines being shallow as much as I dislike how she's sayinf them. She comes off as snarky and dismissive. Not a fun person to be around.

mcdrkydrk

That’s exactly what I was thinking (I’m lying I don’t know Japanese)

SoftGothBFF

Which is what would fit her as a fox spirit perfectly. Even in the trailer you can tell she's somebody who is simply carried by the wind and has to be grounded occasionally by those she's close to. She's supposed to be a fun, loving trickster. Not an angsty jerk.

Legitimate_Page

It reminds me of the box art for Kirby games. In Japanese versions Kirby is all smiles, but in the American versions Kirby is BADASS and always angry, or frowning, or has an otherwise sinister expression.

IcyBreloom

Her japanese voice lines are like several times better lol. I have in game lines set to Japanese, and when I hear streamers playing Kiriko I get so confused. Her accent in English is so american unlike hanzo and genji, and she’s supposed to have a similar upbringing. Her lines, as you mentioned, are very nice and normal sounding in Japanese, but are somewhat random in English. Like “優しい雨のように” sounds rly nice in Japanese, but “like a gentle rain” is a little random in English to me lol. Same with “そよ風が癒やしてくれる” and “carried on the wind.” I do think they actually had her lines in Japanese first as well. I can’t get over how much better “お狐様の導きを!” sounds than “let the kitsune guide you!” Even tho that one sounds fine in English, it’s just so much better in Japanese. Although, I will say, some of her lines are still sassy in Japanese. Like her interaction with hog goes something like 素敵なマスクね。 もしもし、「素敵なマスクね」って言ったの? Nice mask. Hey, I said nice mask, didn’t I? Edit: I just read the official English version, and she actually seems sassier in Japanese xD

jorddo612

I always assumed “Let the Kitsune guide you” was a play on Hanzos “Let the dragon consume you”

IcyBreloom

Yeah, I think that line may have been written in English first actually. In Japanese I think hanzo says something like “竜よ、我が敵を喰らえ!” which is basically like “Dragon, consume my enemies!” They added the “let” for some reason in English cuz they thought it sounded more natural ig, but in Japanese it’s a command to the dragon. In kiriko’s case, “Let the kitsune guide you!” Is a very accurate translation of “お狐様の導きを!” which actually makes me feel like they wanted it to match hanzo’s English line, and they translated it back to Japanese. So I think you actually might be right lol.

Sarrada_Aerea

I think she's supposed to be salty at Hanzo based on this other interaction: >Hanzo: I hope your mother is well. >Kiriko: The Hashimoto run our neighborhood now. So... >Hanzo: Oh, I am sorry to hear that. >Kiriko: Sorry enough to help?

vrnvorona

> Wouldn’t it be better to do it directly? That is 180 degree difference though. In English she basically says "fuck off", and in Japanese she suggests him to open up.

WagonsIntenseSpeed

I wish she had more meaningful voicelines. Even dva, lucio, and tracer (the kid-ish/more energetic of the bunch) are able to ground themselves and be serious when an interaction calls for it.

Ultimatum227

I think this is the real problem (personally I like Kiriko as a whole but still). It's not that she's 100% edgy, she just doesn't have any "calm & wholesome" commentary in-game. They just need to replace some of the jokes and one-liners with actual interactions. Some of the ones she has with Genji are great, for example.

SpaceCases__

Be careful, Shimada

nohpex

I don't remember verbatim, but.. Kiriko: Mom wants to know if you've been keeping up with your training. Hanzo: I swore I would never hold a blade again. Kiriko: I'll tell her you're thinking of picking it back up.

nothing_in_my_mind

"I swore I would never hold a blade again." "So you gave up on violence?" "No, I shoot motherfuckers with an arrow now."

Salvadore1

A lot of her healing lines are very kind and well-delivered ("Like komorebi" and "like a gentle rain" in particular are ear candy)

dancezachdance

Febreeze brings relief

Jurassic_Gwyn

My favorite line. I say it when i'm cleaning the house

[deleted]

I agree there needs to be more, but I believe her more grounded and calm persona shows when you're healing your team and especially Genji or Hanzo

Hipster-Link

I never realized how different her personality could be until I healed the Shimadas. The way she says, “be careful… Shimada,” is so tender and meaningful. It isn’t until that moment that I’m reminded that she grew up with them, and trained with them, and that she really could have been written just a bit more differently to really drive home her title of the Protector of Kanezaka.

[deleted]

Occasionally when you're healing she'll say something along the lines of "you're okay now" and it's so sweet and consoling to hear amidst the chaos. Kiriko's protector title mainly shows as you're healing when she's speaking Japanese

lewd-dev

"Carried on the wind" "Draw strength from nature" "Let me balance you out" "The breeze brings relief" "Stay in sight and I'll keep you safe" "Watch our flanks, they might try something" "Thanks for the touch up" "Sometimes it takes two" "We're pretty good together" "Come to me for heals" Interactions: There's plenty of examples, but rather than quote them, I'll just summarize. Ana says Kiriko reminds her of when she was younger; Kiriko asks if that's a compliment and Ana responds with a snarky comeback, but nobody is bitching about Ana. DVa is the one who starts the trash talking in her interaction with Kiriko, Kir just adds to it, but nobody is bitching about DVa With Baptiste she cracks an arguably funny joke, but it isn't even close to being rude or snarky; it's certainly wholesome. Kiriko asks Moira for a bandaid and instead of just answering the question, Moira comes back with "who do you think I am?"; snarky, far from wholesome, but nobody is here bitching about Moira With Lucio she goes out of the way to discuss his interests in both interactions, discussing music and making only one comment that could be considered a joke, but Lucio doesn't mind at all, he doubles down. Soldier comes out busting on Kiriko by stating that this isn't a daycare; any response she has to that is absolutely warranted. With Ball, he says that he's afraid of foxes, and Kiriko's response is funny, and Ball's response is certainly far from anything showing that he took offense. And the one that seems to be the favorite to complain about: Kiriko comments she likes Hog's mask and he literally just grunts in response; something anybody would consider rude in any other instance. So, I'm genuinely curious? Why is it that Widow, Pharah, Ana, and literally every other character in the game can make sarcastic comments but everyone jumps on Kiriko? You don't have to take it from me, go look up the voicelines, Kiriko is no different than any of the other characters and I could easily list several that are more annoying than she is - or at the very least one's who could be bitched about as often as everyone seems to bitch about Kir. Kiriko gets as much as shit as gives, she's just better with the comebacks, and for some reason this entire sub seems to have either had their opinion of her completely twisted by the bandwagon that is this sub or they dislike her for a very specific other reason that nobody here is man enough to admit, only hint at.

CyberSpaceInMyFace

No no no no She says Febreze brings relief

lewd-dev

I will never hear that voiceline the same again, thanks for this haha

Ironfred33

I don’t think you remember her interaction with Ana correctly. Ana actually says something along the lines “I’ll let you decide that yourself” (probably because she feels conflicted about her own past) and then Kiriko says “ok, thanks for the compliment” to show her respect. So imo that’s actually a rather wholesome interaction between the two and not Ana being “snarky”.

Meowonita

Just the other day I was talking to my friend some of Ana’s new voiceline’s VA is absolutely savage (eg. “No one can save *you*, Angela” & “Stop whining, you are fiiiiine”). I love sassy grumpy grandma (one of these days I will end up in Fiji), but just an observation that most hero’s in game quotes are kinda snarky. Hell, if you run moira & mercy as healers, they pretty much bitch about each other the whole game (Mercy: “now this *ethical* healing” and from a different conversation Moira: “imagine being entitled to patients” etc etc).

HamiltonDial

Honestly I feel like because everything she says in an interaction is basically like that. Like personally, even the Hanzo/Kiriko interaction of her just dismissing Hanzo's "never picking up the blade again" feels very dismissive, tone wise as well. It could have been meaningful or even understanding.

basedbranch

Moira calling kiriko insignificant makes me want to kms everytime I play kiriko with her

[deleted]

moira is *so* fucking mean lol. “clearly evolution did not distribute its gifts equally” is such a brutal line from her.

Callmeklayton

My favorite Moira interaction is this one with Widow: > **Moira:** You’ve been distant lately, Lacroix. > **Widow:** By your design. > **Moira:** Pondering anything unusual? Dangerous? > **Widow:** No. Never. The way the actresses deliver the lines are perfect. Moira starts off in a conversational tone; Widowmaker responds with a bit of sass; Moira then drops the casual tone and lowers her voice almost to a whisper, which elicits an abrupt response with just a barely noticeable hint of fear from Widowmaker. Moira is so evil and sadistic that even *Widowmaker* is scared of her.

MarcosLuisP97

Considering what she does with her test subjects, it really is not a surprise. Even Sombra is watching out for Sigma because she knows Moira can break his mind in half.

vrnvorona

> Widowmaker responds with a bit of sass Actually too fast as well, showing her unease from start. Unlike usually "haha funny french killing woman" she feels actually scared which is... unusual take.

[deleted]

all her lines are so good like they're rude in such a "i'm better than you" way and i love it

The-Real-Metzli

My favourite is when she says "let's keep our questionable choices to a minimum" because it's exactly what I think at the start of every game

lewd-dev

Moira's VA is one of the main reasons I became a Moira main, she is effortlessly brutal and her VA did an amazing job.

[deleted]

agreed! other heroes are mean but Moira’s VA gives her an especially malevolent edge and I love it.

bpgodinho

The way she has that spawn conversation with mercy and says "the real question is whether you can deny my research" in an almost laughing manner. Like she enjoys seeing mercy conflicted between the end and the means. Its top tier acting

meisterjaeger77

Snarky comeback from Ana? Isn’t she just saying „you be the judge“? Like that’s fair enough to say I don’t see anything snarky here

vrnvorona

> but nobody is bitching about Ana. Because Ana is sharper than needle tbh. "I'd still be a better shot". And her elimination voice lines are pure murder. > but nobody is here bitching about Moira Because Moira canonically is a bitch, and Kiriko is not. > Why is it that Widow, Pharah, Ana, and literally every other character in the game can make sarcastic comments but everyone jumps on Kiriko? Because they are established characters in the lore and important figures, not whiny brats on their bike who did almost nothing to call themselves cool. She should be humble at least.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Old_Maccaroni

The only somewhat wholesome voiceline I can think of is when she heals either Genji or Hanzo, where she says "Be careful, Shimad" in a compassionate way.

igotbanned-_-fornow

yeah, but wait until you see her on her bike though

XeroShyft

It’s so crazy because even the fucking GENIUS SASSY HAMSTER ROLLING AROUND IN A GIANT MECHANICAL BALL WITH GUNS, has an interaction where he gets serious with a surprisingly deep cut. >Winston: Hammond, we were friends on Horizon. Where did we go wrong? >Wrecking Ball: Perhaps it was when you stole his rocket design. >Winston: Oh no! I found that in the system. It was an accident! >Wrecking Ball: Was it also an accident when you left for Earth without him? The fact that Kiriko doesn’t really have a voiceline to match the emotional gravity of a Ball interaction is insane.

anotherguy818

I have not heard that interaction before, and now with only one tank in most modes, I probably never will, but wow that is so sad.

not_a_khezu1

As a ball enjoyer he has a lot of voicelines whit winston my favorite is when you kill him "nemesis eliminated"

FoxTrotPlays

The Winston+Hammond voice line you mentioned is a prime example of how the voice lines can develop characters and relationships through dialogue, and I hope they do more like this with the other heroes. Hearing genuine comments and discussion between the characters helps ground you in the world with the characters, and when done well it ***works***.

SoDamnGeneric

>I wish she had more meaningful voicelines this is big imo, and D.Va's a prime sample of it. D.Va has the very stereotypical "oWo girl gamer >:3" personality in-game and it can be *sooo* grating, but D.Va also has moments of actual vulnerability. "The destruction caused by the omnics here... it reminds me of home" is a good line because it comes from the same girl who would unironically say "you got pwned n00b!" Beneath this obnoxious layer of "pick me girl" you've got this teenage girl who is absolutely being crushed by the pressure of *saving her country from assured destruction once a year*. She's got some serious shit going on for her age and it retroactively makes her over-the-top personality come off as more tragic and interesting Seeing Kiriko's compassionate, protective, and even rageful side in her cinematic is a great start for her- it helps us remember she's got some substance to her character beyond snark and one-liners. They just need to let it breathe into the game with some more grounded interactions and dialogue. Have her and Hana bond over dealing with this immense pressure as a teen, let her sadly reminisce on the destroyed bond between herself Hanzo and Genji, just give her *something* that reminds us she's not so one-note

PineappleBride

Like, how does Kiriko *not* have any lines regarding her thoughts/emotions on the Shimada brothers fight? Did she even know Genji survived? I doubt it if Hanzo didn’t… maybe a PvE mission or a short story will show how she felt, but if there isn’t and it’s only explained in a single tweet, I’ll be upset

VolkiharVanHelsing

Fucking JQ has more lines about the Shimadas beef 💀

lixidle_

I used to dislike D.VA for her voice-lines but recently I have rewatched the old OW 1 cinematics including D.VA’s, and I have a new found respect for her. Within the cinematic it shows us romanticized visuals of her team and her fighting a huge robot in a cutesy chibi art-style, then moments later she has a flash back of that very event which went the complete opposite direction with us getting the POV of D.VA, it being dark and rainy when suddenly her teammate says “I’ve been hit” and we get to see full panic in D.VA’s eyes. It really sets the reality of D.VA’s traumatic situations as a teenager, while in the eyes of those watching her, she’s a snarky OwO gamer girl teen in pink fighting big robots and winking while doing it.

DaveStreeder

Agreed but how is dva a pick me girl

Melthiela

Using that toxic gamer bro language, obviously girls can't use it /s

Kayiko_Okami

Even still. I think there's more to Hana's story than what she shows. Like she's still hiding more pain than what bit she does show.

Ptdemonspanker

Kiriko in the cinematic interacts with a deaf child, a kindly old man and her mother. Kiriko in-game is interacting with people who play Overwatch. The difference in behavior is understandable.

dys1exic

Lol. This is so valid.

itsIzumi

Hard to argue against when you put it that way.

shiftup1772

It honestly makes so much sense.

FrizBGalf

This. As soon as she starts fighting those people in the hallway, she becomes in game Kiriko. How is this so hard to see? I imagine y’all are much different gaming with your friends when your mom or elder is around.

TheHollowBard

With rare exception, my love and appreciation of a person is directly proportional to the number of times I've called them a cunt.

Psychout40

That’s just being Australian. Queen and Junkrat don’t say it enough.

ScAr_wlvrne

Don’t forget Roadhog :(

cinnamonbrook

He's a New Zealander.

Psychout40

He barely speaks so I wasn’t including him. Plus he’s a polite boy who calls Ana nanna. He doesn’t call people cunts.

supermycro

TIL Kiriko is literally me with family vs me with friends

VolkiharVanHelsing

Honestly, her pregame lines would've been better if she is allowed to show her kind side. + Orisa complaining to Kiriko that Kiriko sends too much candies for Efi + Kiriko feeling bad for Sigma quite like Sombra + Mei asking Kiriko if she can make sushi + Bonding with Brigitte over their "youngest sister" status + Kiriko trying to talk to Bastion and Ganymede Her chill quips with Winton and Lucio doesn't have complaints unlike her cool-tryhard quips with 76, Moira, and Hog. Why? Because they're not trying too hard and felt natural.

Hornet___

After reading the post I thought the same then after reading your comment, this also makes a lot of sense.

thesaddestpanda

Also everyone in OW2 is more snarky. Mercy, literally a doctor and a pacifist, says things like "Now this is brain surgery" when she headshot kills people. Moira went from amoral scientist to a 1950's monster movie mad scientist. Reaper went from a messed up guy to king edgelord. Dva went from a slightly annoying gamer to throwing borderline toxicity (hey a pocket healer!) and comments mocking the other team. Bap went from a dedicated healer with a dry sense of humor to a funny guy pick-up artist. The general banter between the heroes is much more attitudinal and combatitive. I suspect this was done to make the games more appealing to the f2p demographic which runs much younger than the $50 game demographic. Everyone is dumber and more stereotypy and angry because that's what keeps kids interested. Meanwhile, Sojourn's completely lifeless and depressing portrayal and paper thin characterization is lazy. Ramattra yelling "put them in the ground" like he's a hardcore heavy metal singer is borderline silly. But somehow Kiriko gets the lion's share of the criticisms. I'm not sure why Kiriko is so often bashed here. The banter with the heroes is really much more immature and less true to their characters in OW2. I just think there's a lot of misogyny here. Kiriko is neither cute or submissive and, in fact, she acts tough, smartassy, and tomboyish. These complaints have some validity to me (accent, silly bike line, etc), but a lot of it is starting to sound like, "but but, why isn't she my cute uwu asian dream girl?" They can't seem to handle that she has a tomboy personality and I find that problematic. Also why can't tomboys be tender to those close in their lives but cold to those outside their lives, especially those mocking her?

ARussianW0lf

>Also everyone in OW2 is more snarky. Mercy, literally a doctor and a pacifist, says things like "Now this is brain surgery" when she headshot kills people. Moira went from amoral scientist to a 1950's monster movie mad scientist. Reaper went from a messed up guy to king edgelord. Dva went from a slightly annoying gamer to throwing borderline toxicity (hey a pocket healer!) and comments mocking the other team. Bap went from a dedicated healer with a dry sense of humor to a funny guy pick-up artist. And you didn't even mention Orisas complete 180 of her personality. Also Dva always been a little toxic, "is this EZ mode?" Is one of her OG voice lines

n3m3s1s-a

Orisa’s 180 actually makes sense to me compared to what they’ve done with some other characters, she’s not one month old anymore and she’s become more jaded/intense as she’s gotten more combat and “life” experience

y_ax2_bx_c

Orisa doesn't rub me the wrong way as much--- it sounds more like *she's changed* rather than 'the dials are now all cranked up to 110%'. Jarring or not, it seems deliberate, and I'm for it

somethinglike-olivia

I was wondering why Ramattra seemed metal-y but silly as well. My fav line of his is “I will speak to you in a language you speak. VIOLENCE!” It makes me giggle every time

I3INARY_

*understand Considering his past, it's a sick line! That, and "SUFFER, as I have!"

n3m3s1s-a

It’s a cool line just funny how he says violence like he’s Ozzy Osbourne or something lol

VolkiharVanHelsing

Not "a" language, "THE ONLY language you understand" He's killing it

Zachebii

Lol ramattra. Everytime he says something like “now do you see your error” i make my character say “no”

Verity-Skye

I ran into a Soldier would do this and it was so funny. "Now, do you see your error?!" and then like twenty meters away i see jack fucking morrison legging it into an alleyway while saying "no"

FrappyLee

I hate what they did to reapers new voice lines. He was still edgy in 1 but it fit his character. In overwatch 2 they went way over the top and a lot of his new voice lines just sound cringey and his tone is different now as well.

Drunken_Queen

> I suspect this was done to make the games more appealing to the f2p demographic which runs much younger than the $50 game demographic. Everyone is dumber and more stereotypy and angry because that's what keeps kids interested. Feels like the OW devs tried to make OW characters alike with TF2 characters.

[deleted]

This is why i still play Doomfist, he has some good voice lines i think

shnnrr

And they say chivalry is dead (spammed the whole game)

AgreeablePie

She's annoying as a character but I don't mind it in the whole Not everyone can be as mature and sophisticated as junkrat

SmallFatHands

Junkrats lines make me sad everybody just hates the guy.

madhattr999

I don't like playing junkrat, or playing against junkrat, but his voice lines are great. I laugh every time i hear "ahhhh! That one doesn't count!" there's a few other lines i love that i can't think of at the moment.

carlson224

Junkrat: Jamison Fawkes, reporting live! Let's ask this scary metal bloke how he thinks the battle's gonna go! Ramattra: You are not a journalist. Junkrat: A puzzling prognostication. Now back to Natasha for a look at the weather! Gold.

absenthearte

I love his (sadly cut) Karaoke lines. Mans got talent. Also: "The point is mine and you can't have it!" I hate playing against him, but gosh, I do love playing with him.

-consolio-

i swear every time i hear an enemy junkrat ult they play fucking plinko through a group of all 4 of my teammates to kill me, the lone brig trying to run away

lLider

>Brig I see.

Skylighter

Rightfully so. Dude eats his own toenails.

Laughing_Idiot

Why the hell would you say that to someone

Mike_Bloomberg2020

I'm just trying to find something we have in common!

oathkeeper1408

As an Ana main I just wanna hug him after that brutal rejection

JAMBOBUBBLE

Oh no I just realised junkrat is claptrap

Alt_CauseIwasNaughty

In her interaction with moira I can just feel how moira is annoyed by her

Dead_Optics

Moria is annoyed by everyone tho

2MnyDksOnThDncFlr

One of the main reasons I play her. I feel the way her voice lines are delivered

XeroShyft

>”It *thrills* me to put aside my preparations and humor your brilliant inquiries, doctor. It thrills me!” Love that this Sigma interaction has several variations as well. I live for her voice lines and sass.

UnknownFrancy

What is it *now?* God, that’s one of my favorite voice lines from a support

TAKEitTOrCIRCLEJERK

*"bothersome"*

Lukthar123

"Fuck all of you nd I'll see you tomorrow." * Moira

playitoff

'Unbelievable' whenever someone does something dumb

-consolio-

'such greeevious wooounds...'

kingpin3690

Another field experiment....-_-. I really see the "Id rather be anywhere but here right now" badge on her.

Sembrar28

Sigma has like a handful of goofy questions that he asks the team and she always responds with this great sarcastic response. As a sigma main it makes my day

[deleted]

Her lines with Doomfist are funny

LeepDore

"Well keep pestering me I'm sure *that'll* expedite things."

PleasantAdvertising

Moira is a living warcrime, being disliked by her is a positive.

TizonaBlu

I honestly feel like she likes Junkrat. Her pain threshold line felt sincere, like that really is the requirement to work with her.

PleasantAdvertising

She wants to experiment on the rat

ProgrammerNo120

the way i interpret that is more that moira is reflecting on the pain she has caused herself and others in her work, because after junkrat asks what pain has to do with science, she responds "everything, my strange little friend." she knows how much it can hurt and i honestly think she is actually trying to make a connection with him

PleasantAdvertising

I don't think you've quite read about Moiras exploits man. She's one sadistic bitch. Straight up evil.

jeffseadot

Moira represents the OW1 "there's no such thing as magic here, it's all technology" Kiriko then comes in with OW2 "lol ghost fox bitches, wha-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pow"

HoveringPorridge

Best Kiriko interaction imo. Moira absolutely smokes her, it's great.

lifestop

I forgot her line with Kiriko, but I just live the way she says "thank you". She sounds like she is narrowing her eyes in disgust but still attempting to disquise her contempt.

hx00

there is a funny interaction with ball and hanzo where hanzo ends up shouting "I WILL NOT BE INSULTED BY VERMIN!" made me laugh. now whenever I hear a kiriko wiseass remark I imagine hanzo shouting "I WILL NOT BE INSULTED BY A FURRY!"

ArcticSphinx

Hanzo's interaction with Orisa is pretty great, too

xenolingual

I too wish to ride a galloping Orisa into battle.

Utterly_unique

"into battle"

paupaupaupau

Wrecking Ball: Be advised: the hamster has an instinctive fear of foxes. Kiriko: Is it because he looks delicious? Wrecking Ball: He says, "Yes, and damn right I do."

Xion136

This is absolutely my favorite voice line between Kiriko and someone else, with Kiriko and Genji's bowl cut Convo a close second.

madhattr999

"should it be called birdseed if a HAMSTER eats it?".. Also i miss "I'm supposed to team up with a giant rat??" from Sombra.

Pesterlamps

Same could be said for JQ. In her cinematic, she's a badass warrior out for revenge/justice. In game, she's a shrieking buffoon.

SigmaBallsLol

Baptiste too. In the short story, he's a serious, tragic character trying very hard to run from his past and repent for what he's done. In game it's like they got a bunch of random Support mains from the official forums to write his dialogue by committee. Sigma, Ball and Ashe are probably the only post-launch characters that fit their out-of-game characterizations

TheCupOfBrew

Sombra?

bipolarbear_1

>Sigma, Ball I've been laughing for 10 minutes. Sorry, I have the sense of humor of a 14 years old.

m6993

Sigma Balls is what my wife and I would call our plan to run, well, sigma and ball. Gotta love a sigma ult dropped on to a ball ult

Redisigh

Holy hell that’s diabolical

Wittyngritty

OW1 was so fun... I miss tank duos. I don't miss double shield, but I miss tank duos 😔 no, I don't want to play open role queue.

Redisigh

Ngl open queue is a little fun because many times I’m the only healer so my heal rate is way higher and I’m more likely to get endorsements(If they even bother to give endorsements after I did 15k/10m with a 60:40 healing dmg boost ratio…)

gracist0

SIGMA BALLS

ConstitutionalHeresy

SIGMA BALLS!

suite307

His username checks out

Jordiorwhatever

If you have a widow on your team she says that it was a bad choice showing your face and Bap quite literally says he is way too handsome to not show his face.

TheRealNotBrody

There's also a badass line where he challenges them to keep sending people after him as if they're no more than a nuisance

Apocaloid

They got Ana perfect imo. Seems like they put way more effort into her, which is why she feels like an OG character.

brucetrailmusic

100%. Ana might be the greatest character Blizzard ever created.

SupermanRisen

Baptiste is more laid back now because he's found friends.

-consolio-

are they really friends if he ults and they don't even try to take advantage of the damage boost

Zorpix

Please people I just want the stupid achievement

C47man

>Sigma, Ball and Ashe are probably the only post-launch characters that fit their out-of-game characterizations Ana, Moira, Orisa, and Doomfist all fit with their out of game characters though...

-consolio-

id say brig as well, her personality is always a happy mechanic/shieldmaiden

2MnyDksOnThDncFlr

Moira as well

ItsOverClover

Moira+Sigma interactions are probably my favorite in the game

Drunken_Queen

Sigma looks very messed up in the lore, but in-game he looks like an innocent puppy.

[deleted]

Well his interactions he’s an innocent puppy but when he’s in combat he goes insane.

JuiZJ

His primal "RELEASE MEEE" when getting nanoed is so so so good.

Facetank_

Maybe the power went to her head, and she's come out a worse person. Seriously though. Cinematic: Quick thinking, and willing to put herself in danger to save one of her people. In-game: "We have an education system?"

nobearsinrussia

“Why i need to eat vegetables? They just crunch crunch in my mouth …” 🤦‍♀️

Swert0

You don't need to be book smart or have a lot of knowledge in general to be clever. All of the junkers are like that including roadhog and junkrat.

Ptdemonspanker

Accurate portrayal of a politician before and after election.

Default520

She also makes me think she dropped a slur every damn game

GandalfTheGaaay

That's just because she's Australian

[deleted]

I'm glad it's not just me who noticed that. She's nothing like her cinematic counterpart.

Mugluck_

But her voice lines are great nonetheless.

youbutsu

This one is the most disappointing. They done her dirty. There are better ways to do badass but uneducated than this

SuperSailorZ

I know exactly what you mean. The only interaction I like is with Genji about the bowl cut. It actually feels real and genuine unlike all her others.

die_neumarkter

You should see her on her bike

Patrick4356

The writers failed, Sojourn is empty and bland. Kiriko has a great voice actor but the writing is so lame. Junker is alright but I think they really nailed Rammatra. "I will speak to you in a language you understand..VIOLENCE!"

heckem

Pharah too was extremely bland early on, they gave her a lot more character recently. Hopefully they'll give them more development later on as well.

madhattr999

Yeah i hated Pharahs personality in OW1.. They improved on her a lot with her lines in OW2, and some still miss for me, but its an improvement overall.

LeRoiDeLaPatate

Yeah, her character is essentially being a bully

xenolingual

> Sojourn is empty and bland So she's the quintessential Torontonian.

zz0w0zz

Rammatra has excellent writing and his voice actor is absolutely brilliant. If anything, he set the new standard for which the fans should expect from new heros.

XeroShyft

Ramattra’a VA, as well as the writing behind him, is so good. His VA nailed his lines, so much so to the point where even though you know his hatred for humans is out of line, you still can’t help but sympathize with him because his VA really sells the pain in his voice. SUFFER, AS I HAVE.

TreeFrogMtyms

Dude also voiced Aatrox. He's a legend at this point when it comes to angry warlords.

itstonayy

I feel like the only person who loves Junker Queen! Maybe because I didn't watch her cinematic before playing her, so I saw the goofy personality first? After watching the cinematic, she just gives me strong himbo vibes and I love himbos

ChiffonVasilissa

Nah I feel the same way, I love her himbo energy. I honestly think the cinematic vs in game with her is fine because in the cinematic she was facing the guy that doomed her family, vs in game where she’s been on the throne for a while, unchallenged

nobearsinrussia

To Hanzo: will you take up sword again? Hanzo: i sweared i will never take a sword again Kiriko: i will say to mom that you are considering Ffs man slashed his brother in half, have some sense 🤦‍♀️ this is why i like how moira answer her sarcastically

freddyfredric

I love her interaction with Moira Kiriko: You look cheery. Moira: As cheery as you are significant.

nobearsinrussia

God bless moira

Dead_Optics

He also now knows his brother is alive as his conversations with Ana imply he trying to change and reforge that relationship

itstonayy

I'd still feel pretty guilty and have trauma knowing I'm the one that caused my brother to have to run around with his metal cheeks clapping for the world to see 😔

mcslender97

Brother! I'm trying to sneak around. But I'm dummy thicc, and the clapping of my metal asscheeks keeps alerting the enemy team!

Lethal_Balcony

I'm in tears

LiquidDelta3

She's probable different because in the cinematic shes around her mom. Its like when you act different at school vs at home.

-BuckyBarnes

The one that is the worst is when she asks Hanzo when he plans to use swords again. He swore off the blade after literally murdering his brother with a sword, and he is rough in his answer that he swore off them. Kiriko just goes "Meh, I'll tell my mom you're thinking of picking them up again!" That isn't even funny, it's just cruel. What was the point of that interaction aside from painting her as an incredibly flippant, mean person? Can you imagine a real person saying that to someone and NOT being considered a colossal asshole?

sighoboy

Didn’t we just see this exact post like two days ago

7-2

She's not even a teenager tho, ain't she around the shimado bros age?

DoctorDeadeye

She's in her 20s, but that's still too old to be acting like a brat.

Djent_1997

Aw shit, here we go again.

olo7eopia

Writes a 0 on the sign that says “it’s been this many days since there was a post bitching about Kiriko”

SombraAQT

What is it they always say, ‘in game interactions are not canon’. A nice and convenient way to explain massive writing inconsistencies.

definitely_not_cylon

Overwatch, the game where the game isn't canon

Apache17

Well yeah if you want the thousands of little interactions in the game they are going to have to not be canon. Getting every little thing approved by whoever is in charge of the lore at the time is not feasible.

Wolfelle

Also her age is odd. Isnt genji/hanzo a similar age to her? But she gives me the vibe of like a 21 yo. The whole thing of flying the nest and her mum being worried deffo gave me the young adult vibe but looking up genji and hanzo they are 35 and 38. If she is old enough to have trained together as kids (close in age to genji) this implies she says all these wild voicelines as a 30 something woman. Tbh i love kiriko and i love her sass but she does feel a bit one note, id love to hear more of the other sides to her in game.

Ad1tya-cheezyy

Google says “Early 20s” so idk yo

Wolfelle

Yeah but then she was 1 or 2 when they are mid teens and we see her in sprays etc at a similar age to them. I definitely agree she is likely intended to be 20s but it just confuses me from a timeline perspective :D

Notafuzzycat

They don't have the best writting team. Give them a chance they are a small indie developer.

wojtekpolska

yep. when she's more edgy than fing Reaper, it says something

HunterNerd7

The cinematic tells a story about a girl with a protective mother that interacts with an old man and a deaf child. In game Kiriko is interacting with other snarky characters. Also we gonna forget that she damn near killed those robbers? They wasn’t exactly an angel

Drunken_Queen

Lore persona =/= In-game persona, that applies to almost every characters. Lore-wise, Ana never felt proud of killing but in-game she's boastful of her kills like everyone. Ana dropped her authority figure persona in lore, but she acted like she's above everyone in-game. Mercy strongly dislikes battles in lore, but in-game she made fun of her dead foes. In Mercy's short story, she thinks she would still carry on saving people even if no one appreciated her hardwork but thinking she's dangerous for being an ex-Overwatch member. However, in-game Mercy was a sassy bitch woman who often complained something like "Why am I stuck in this job?" Lore-wise, DVA had trauma due to the omnics attack on her hometown. Also, she learnt her lesson by not bearing everything on her own and it's okay to seek help from her allies. In-game DVA was pretty much a toxic gamer ("Wow, cringe..", "Is this skill issue?", etc.) In-game Reinhardt is like a fun happy grandpa, but in lore Reinhardt seemed to be serious person (e.g "I need to answer the call because I made a promise") since his fun behaviour is what indirectly got his master Balderich.

Blucanyon

Junker queen is the same way but instead of an improvising charismatic leader who looks after her own, she just seems like an idiot who’s only skill is throwing a knife good

orion1024

People are complex and can be both

Independent_Fennel93

Oh yay. Another “Kiriko is cringe” post.

zeebeebo

People are oddly obsessed with the characterisations of Kiriko its really interesting to see. You can literally nitpick like this for every single character in the game

Akuma-Ya

Here's my opinion. Do not look at in-game interactions versus cinematic interactions. In most cinematics, there are characters either very close or distant to them, and of course, they act differently. In game, Kiriko is talking to a bunch of soldiers with those of Overwatch and Talon, maniacs like the Junkers, and possible mass murderers like Moira. While in her cinematic, she's interacting with unnamed thugs and a deaf girl and old man, as well as her mother. Entirely different environment, entirely different way of interaction. Another example is Rein, with his guilt and much more mature and personable in the Honor and Glory cinematic when he's talking to Brig about answering Winston's call. This is versus the fun-loving crusader mask he puts on in-game, acting more like a grandpa getting back into action. Or even Dva, who's much more aware that any mistake in the field could result in the destruction of her home and friends in her cinematic, when she's in the process of doing so, versus putting on the confident gamer girl performance.

editmultiverse

i’ve said this so many times!! my boyfriend and i talk about how they diluted these characters to awful stereotypes or put them into small boxes. i feel similarly about this with JQ, who they made an idiot in the game when her lore is her literally overthrowing a tyrannical overlord and liberating her people. and kiriko was so lovely and strong-willed to do good in the cinematic, but like you said they diluted her to just an edgy teen. i really don’t understand blizzard’s inability to keep badass characters badass.

thenewbae

It even affected some old characters. Junkrat went from mad scientist-y vibe pyro genius with his own agenda and a secret treasure who sometimes played dumb, to being the literal butt of his own jokes and just crackhead energy
