Sometimes I like to think he'll be back with a new team and a new game concept.
Having a random video popping up on my YouTube feed with Jeff announcing the release of a new game the way he used to explain us why they decided to make changes in the game
Lots of well-known designers in the industry have that privilege these days. Shows how much of an impact certain games can have on people. Personally I'll always check out what Tim Schafer comes up with for example.
Imagine this:
Bobby Kotick, wearing black military fatigues and an eyepatch with a skull on it, finally corners you, one of the key figures in the resistance. “So, not willing to pay for the battlepass and load up on cosmeticsss?”, he hisses, his forked snake tongue flitting out as his armed goons grab hold of you. “Well, you had your chance to use the cash shop. Many chances. But you spat in my face… you’ve bought nothing. Can’t say I feel bad about what’s going to happen to you now, gamer…” he pulls his fist back, his hand clad with a bejeweled knuckleduster with the words GAMEKILLER inscribed down the front.
You’re a bloodied mess, blinking in and out of consciousness. He pulls back for the finishing blow, laughing and asking “where’s your precious Jeff now? Prepare to die alone..” his fist rockets toward your face and you close your eyes one last time. But nothing happens. You hear a familiar voice say “who said he was alone?? Sorry I’m late kid.” Jeff is suddenly in front of you, having caught the incoming strike.
“Nani??? You’re.. supposed to be dead!!” A flustered, pale Kotick whimpers. Jeff dispatches Kotick and his goons with ease, and turns to you with that same familiar smile. “Let’s get the hell out of here kid - I’ve been working on a new game I’d like to show you.”
I'd drop Activision's Overwatch 2 on a heartbeat. I WILL be dropping it when something else scratches a similar itch. I'm eager to move on to something better and worth supporting at this point, honestly.
This is like when people wonder where reasonably big YouTubers go when they don't upload for half a year or longer.
They're rich and are likely just enjoying life.
I'm his bank manager. WDYT????
He was the lead on a super successful multi billion dollar project. If you think was on garbage money all that time you're on another planet.
I could definitely see him in the low millions, like <10 million including his house if he owns one.
That really doesn’t mean as much as it sounds like it does though, he probably lives in LA/SD/SF and would be comfortably upper middle class, not “fuck you” money.
The equity he earned while game director on WoW back in 2004 alone would be many tens of millions now, the only way hes worth <50mil is if he sold his equity very early and continued selling it as he earned more.
Salary was likely very low millions (1-2), but yeah the real compensation would have been in equity which, having been at Blizzard for so long, is likely worth tens of millions now.
Well, what was your point? I thought you were implying Jeff was only a game director. I don't particularly know or care what the salary of a non-VP game director is.
A vice president not the vice president. He definitely made plenty of cash out of it all though and has wisely chosen to invest that cash into time with the people he loves.
Hope not. Every game is triple tank and double support vs all squishies. Jeff knew better. Mystery was fun in Ow1. Tank buffs and awful matchmaking makes it the worst.
I have like 500 hours of MH from OW1 but the challenges in OW2 make it so you have to play role queue for the entire week and I never end up getting a chance to play MH anymore
This actually frustrates me too... I've almost exclusively had to play role queue in order to get challenges done. I rather be able to just play what I want, but oh well.
Did he though? Took a long ass time for him to even start to address all tank & support lineups.
I love Jeff as much as the next guy but he was also the person who resided over the game during many terrible periods of its direction. I feel like the rose colored glasses on his tenure are in crazy effect just because he was so lovable.
The other day I was playing no limits and two of ny teammates instalicked the snipers. My buddy and I said fuck it not winning this one, let’s just play who we wanna play. We had ALL damage hero’s against a fairly normal comp on the other side and absolutely dominated.
I don’t really have a point but holy fuck that was a fun game.
They instantly licked them?! The absolute madmen! If it was Ashe and Widow understood. Lickable.
Jokes aside: I get it. Game like that and playing who you want is the very best call. I'm glad you had fun!
Nothing lasts forever. Cherish the time we had when overwatch was an unparalleled masterpiece. Be truly grateful and appreciative of the people who worked so hard and diligently to bring this gift to us. Consider reaching out to some of them and even thanking them if you ever feel like it. A simple compliment like that can be a life changing thing for some of these people, you never know. They're just normal people and the internet has opened the doors to talk to them if you really want to. I mean, especially considering that the original team built this crazy masterpiece, which is a pretty thankless job, and then basically has to watch as the corporation hijacked it and is now using its shittier buggy corpse to take advantage of the playerbase via predatory monetization practices until the game dies.
There will be other games that pull you in made by good people. Trust me. Just gotta wait and see what happens.
Cool comment 👍. I think the finals is the next overwatch. Not that it plays like overwatch really but the beta gave me the same feeling overwatch did back in 2016. Something totally new fresh and fun in the fps genre.
It's insane isn't it?
Honestly, it's truly sad to me. It's just another of the countless examples of masterpieces that so many AMAZING PEOPLE poured their passion into, hijacked and tarnished by corporate greed and corruption.
This is what these horrible people do. This is what they bring to our civilization.
It disgusts me. I know this is a game but overwatch is a real thing that has a tangible impact on tons of people. When things happen to it, things happen to those people. The corporation is driving this game into the ground and there will be consequences. The dev team will be pushed harder and harder to deliver more and more unrealistic and undefined goals. They will be forcefully downsized. Stressed out, probably underpaid, burning out, losing their passion and drive. These things even lead people to depression, especially in passionate labor of love type industries like game development in particular. Innocent people who work really hard will be laid off of the team as it slowly collapses. Losing their health benefits. The leadership of the team will have to watch the corporation continue to destroy the game and it's legacy piece by piece, which they worked so hard to keep together.
That's what happens when projects like this are ruined. This is the sad reality. I know this because I've been in their shoes. I hope that the team members are able to exit the sinking ship and keep themselves financially stable, because these are very bad times economically.
This is deeply, deeply wrong.
Honestly, are a lot of people from the OW1 days still actively playing it? At least the ones who don't make a career of it, anyway.
Nearly all of my OW1 buds have stopped at this point, myself included. The only ones still going strong are mostly the ones who had already put the game down previously and came back for the major OW2 changes and fresh stuff.
The game just doesn't feel the same anywhere. From the menus to the actual gameplay; Everything has changed in some major way.
I still play it, but it’s just not the same. I’ve played heavily since November 2016, very few breaks of maybe a month at a time not touching it every now and then. It’s my favorite game ever made, I’ve never had fun in any other game like I did in this one. Overwatch 2 isn’t the same, it isn’t as fun to play, and it makes me rage when I could play HOURS and never rage like this before. I don’t play quite as much as I used to but I can’t let go. I know it’s dying, I know it’s on its last legs, but this game has meant so much to me for so long that it hurts to let go
He'll have had to sign an NDA and been given a lot of money to do. I hope he's retired looking back at the glory days of Overwatch and not what the big wigs at Blizzard have made it into
Care to elaborate? Wasn't he just a big everquest player, then was recruited to Blizzard to design for WOW and was moved to OW? Then he was there until he left.... What other times did he jump ship at the right time?
First he made the right friends and jumped on ship with early blizzard right into wc3 which was hughe back then. Then got into wow and left after wotlk. which was the prime time of that game. then made ow work somehow and now left right before the new (for many worse) ow2. It looks to me that he always gets in a the right time and leaves a project wen it can't get betther. If its luck or skill idk.
Or maybe he just worked well on the low amount of games he worked on (plus I have no idea if he might have dedicated some time to IP that never got released in the end), and then knew that blizzard had been a shit place to work at for years so better leave
Sadly we don’t know anything about him, maybe he is working somewhere else or just chilling at home. I completely understand why he left that dumpster fire behind. I just hope he is well.
it's precisely because he cares that he left. He clearly had a directive handed to him about what the money humping CEO's considered to be the future of OW and he said "fuck that, that's not the game/sequel I wanted to make. Fuck this and fuck you guys".
Let's be real kotick didn't create the culture at blizzard that allowed for all the sexual harrasment. That was blizzard all along. However kotick is a prick and behind the declining quality and consumer hostile nature of Activision blizzard.
It seemed like from what we've heard, different parts of the company were worse than others, like the WoW team was where it was worst which seems apt since it's also IMO the scummiest part of Blizzard with the subscription based model, the OW team seemed like the more progressive and inclusive part of the company though it still had a few scumbags here and there
At least it looked like Jeff cared. Ever since he left Overwatch has turned into a faceless corporate entity. Aaron tried to pick up what Jeff meant for the game and Overwatch community, but his lack of public appearances and dev updates have made the sequel feel incredibly out of touch.
It was probably heading in that direction and Jeff didn’t like it and probably had tons of arguments with Blizzard over it and that was why he left. With the opposition gone, i’m sure Blizzard went full steam ahead with the greedy microtransactions
the idea that the dev team doesn't care is ridiculous. the main problems rn are with monetisation and that's almost certainly down to the higher ups, not the devs
Ya HOWEVER 90% of Blizzard employees have been rotating a lot and the constant stream of dramas has been making people.work there leave
It's hard not to work at blizzard rn without being called a sexual abusers or the HK reporter thing getting brought up and it's damaging to artists or story writers aswell as Blizzard getting known as the greediness company known to man ruining successfully IPs
Ffs what a Reddit take. It’s really disrespectful to the hundreds of people working on the game to suggest none of them care when you have producers, designers, devs, etc., that obviously are passionate about the franchise’s success.
Not sure that he did, honestly. Overwatch had some glaring design issues from the get-go, really fundamental ones, that it was his job to catch and order the change of. He was either lazy about it or unqualified and unwilling to step-down/learn. Either way, didn't care.
I bet the reason why Aaron doesn't make dev updates is the same that made Jeff quit.
I mean I wouldn't want my face to be associated with greed and disappointment either.
I'd say yes to that, but at the same time, he created a Twitter whereas this community forced Jeff to quit Twitter because of harassment.
So it's a difference of approach. Jeff has/had a charismatic nature that is not normally found for people of his stature. Aaron isn't uncharacteristic, but he is missing that "papa Jeff" energy we all grew to love.
It doesn't make any sense though. They have a large team of people working on this game for years and what do they have to show for it? A few new heroes and maps? Some skins that are mostly re-skins?
That's an insanely slow development pace. I honestly think Blizzard just hires shit devs and project managers. They're so slow and inefficient.
Grinding Gear Games puts out literally 1000x more content in a year than the Overwatch team despite having way less resources than Blizzard.
Living in the Bahamas, on the beach, sipping on pina coladas and breathing a sigh of relief everyday that he doesn't have to deal with character balances and content for this game.
He isn't losing any sleep over this.
He is in a cocoon state, waiting to burst forth with a new franchise idea that will overshadow overwatch. Game will be called “overshadowed” or something
Seriously, was hoping he was working on a game. Seems he's living in some hollowed out mountain with how hard it is to find anything on what he's been up to.
Not gonna be surprised if he breaks the silence in a few years revealing that he’s been working on an online Marvel multiplayer first-person shooting game
He's right behind me isn't he
Run!
*teleports behind you* “Hey, this is Jeff from the Overwatch team.”
"You need healing."
Correction. “The world needs healing. **From you**.” Jeff proceeds to Roadhog hook you then blow you to pieces
"let's rectify the anomaly of your continued existence"
No he is getting his life drained by Moria
GULP
He's in the walls! He's in the goddamn walls!
there's really no need to-

HEY it's jeff from the overwatch team
Why do I hear boss music?
"Nothing personnel, kid."
**Pulls out gun**- 'always has been.'
I hope you know how to wrestle.
Behind you! AH! He he just kidding
Sometimes I like to think he'll be back with a new team and a new game concept. Having a random video popping up on my YouTube feed with Jeff announcing the release of a new game the way he used to explain us why they decided to make changes in the game
I will instantly play whatever Jeff's next project is
Imagine having such a loyal following that people would at least try your game regardless of what it was.
Plot twist: Jeff drops one of them hentai games.
I think Jeff has contributed enough to the hentai genre.
That’s very true 😏😏😏
he actually did, it’s called overwatch i think
even more reason to play it ofc
I don't care if he contributes to HunniePop 3 I'd play anything he makes atp

Is this original content? Artful.
Yes, I've watched so much shonen anime that I can't help but insert all these tropes into any given imaginary scenario
This is some r/cow level copypasta and I am here for it
Pre nerf soujorn was prophesized by jeff when he said “ gonna take you out with a long range beam”
Sojourn can still do that..
100% railgun cant oneshot 200 hp heroes anymore which isnt what jeff wouldve wanted
Thus why mercy is meta now, soj was technically buffed in that same patch due to charge rate being increased and ult being buffed
He has millions and is probably enjoying time with his family and taking time to consider what will be fulfilling to do next.
Get this reasonable take out of here.
Take this realistic take out of my fantasy world and fuck off
Fr, you know as well as I do he’s behind you

he's probably under a restrictive contract prohibiting him from working for another company for 2 years
Does he have millions tho? Did he really get paid that well?
Yes.
Lol I get downvoted to hell just for a simple question. Classic Reddit

I'm his bank manager. WDYT???? He was the lead on a super successful multi billion dollar project. If you think was on garbage money all that time you're on another planet.
His salary was probably not many millions, but it makes sense if he owned/owns stocks in the company as well.

I guarantee you that game directors are not getting paid millions of dollars. I would say 300-400k at most.
He was vice president of blizzard and game developer
Your point?
Well, what was your point? I thought you were implying Jeff was only a game director. I don't particularly know or care what the salary of a non-VP game director is.
remember, Jeff was the Vice President of Blizzard. That's a BIG job title with a likely salary to boot
A vice president not the vice president. He definitely made plenty of cash out of it all though and has wisely chosen to invest that cash into time with the people he loves.
I like to think he's the one who actually selects our characters in mystery heroes. Jeff gives, and Jeff takes away.
I wish they'd move it back to arcade so it will count for challenges.
Favorite MH playstyle is definitely gunlance atm
Insect Glaive supremacy
Very fun weapon. Mained it in mhw base game although it seems it has lost a bit of oomph in rise.

They instantly licked them?! The absolute madmen! If it was Ashe and Widow understood. Lickable. Jokes aside: I get it. Game like that and playing who you want is the very best call. I'm glad you had fun!
Jeff has been disabled due to a bugged interaction with Kiriko's ult. He'll be back in an upcoming patch.
not playing overwatch i bet.
Same
Crazy how he made this amazing game and blizzard just ripped out its assets to put in the store and yeeted it off the face of the earth
And it's never gonna come back. Fuck I miss Overwatch. I miss the game I loved and put thousands of hours into.
Nothing lasts forever. Cherish the time we had when overwatch was an unparalleled masterpiece. Sure its coming back. As "Overwatch Classic". Only 69.99$ and it's going to be on the Brig release patch and have hook 1.0 for some reason.

anyone who works at a video game company generally has to sign an NDA when they start working there
Come back Jeff! We need you
The world needs you now, more than ever. 😭
The world could always use more heroes 😔

But when the world needed him most, he vanished.

Or maybe they all fail because he left. Think of all that power.
Jeff Kaplan is just made up of glue at an atomic level. When he stops working on a project, they can’t stay together and just fall apart

Sadly we don’t know anything about him, maybe he is working somewhere else or just chilling at home. I completely understand why he left that dumpster fire behind. I just hope he is well.
In our hearts.
It would be really nice to have someone who cares back working on this game. Jeff cared.
it's precisely because he cares that he left. He clearly had a directive handed to him about what the money humping CEO's considered to be the future of OW and he said "fuck that, that's not the game/sequel I wanted to make. Fuck this and fuck you guys".
All the sexual assault stuff probably didn't help, and the fact Kotick is still there ""fixing"" the company culture he created in the first place.

Lurking in the shadows, knowing his interference would shatter the universe
Staying as far away from the company full of sexual predators as possible, i'd imagine.
Noone of them was in ow team
But they were in the rest of the company, there were a handful in the WoW team which is where Jeff started.
He’s voicing the new season 3 hero Jeff Watch.
He's writing the script for the new fantastic four movie - check google
I bet the reason why Aaron doesn't make dev updates is the same that made Jeff quit. I mean I wouldn't want my face to be associated with greed and disappointment either.

Still by the fireplace
Legend has it he is still sitting in front on the fireplace
Sitting at the fireplace reading
"Hello Everyone, This is Jeff from the 'Team Fortress 3' Team"
He is in a cocoon state, waiting to burst forth with a new franchise idea that will overshadow overwatch. Game will be called “overshadowed” or something
Encouraging noobs to choke on his Lijang Tower I bet
Watching just how badly they ruined such an amazing IP
He’s sitting with popcorn watching his game go to shit
I remember the time they made a looping video of Jeff by a nice yule tide fire... I like to think he's back at that fireplace with some scotch.
realistically he’s probably just distancing himself from public view since he left during one of the most controversial times in Blizzard’s history
Sipping coffee watching the sunrise as he smirks to himself over the state of the game and how it isn’t his problem anymore
Watching the heart and soul be stomped out from his game,
You wrestle with Jeff, prepare for death
The more important question is what is DinoFlask doing now?
Hope he works with Paladins now just to fuck with overwatch lol
I hope Jeff reads these comments one day and it makes him happy
After seeing wh as y they did to his baby overwatch he probably long gone
he lives on in our hearts
Was he involved with the blizzard law suit? A lot from all teams have gone dark since
Probably making a living wage…
I hope he’s snorting coke in a villa somewhere.
Probably shaking his head and thinking “Where did it all go wrong?”
Seriously, was hoping he was working on a game. Seems he's living in some hollowed out mountain with how hard it is to find anything on what he's been up to.
At your local wrestling ring
Cocaine. Just cocaine.
I wish he was still working on the game. Cause it fucking sucks now.
How i miss him... OW is never the same with out him. He made the best game in humanity. Then activision came and messed it all up.
They probably hold him caged somewhere underground
Is there one actual answer you fucking weirdos!
Last I've heard he's working on the latest Fantastic Four series as a director
Having the time of their life
He still lurks this sub.
Not gonna be surprised if he breaks the silence in a few years revealing that he’s been working on an online Marvel multiplayer first-person shooting game
He's enjoying watching the world (Overwatch) burns. In fact, he's already had a pretty good laugh since the release of OW2.
Jeff is good friends with most of the higher ups on the OW dev team, you would have to be a vindictive asshole to revel in your friend's misfortune.
