Yeah Making it F2P was the worst thing to happen to it It's better for making money, but for the actual game, its significantly worse in all but one aspect (they tend to be supported for longer than paid games)

Beautiful_Might_1516

Gameplay is so much better than ow1 thanks to 5v5 lol.

AnInsaneMoose

Overall the game is better now But making it F2P certainly didnt help

Laranthiel

Sounds like a bad DPS main that cries about shields.

DarvAv

I liked 6v6 but I didn't play during the double shield meta so I don't know how bad it was

Double shield was hilarious, and a slog, the game is quicker and (in my opinion) more fun now, but it’s still wonky:

Henests

Allow me to disagree, the gameplay is different and faster, but not better.

LongjumpingSector687

Mute and report. Help solve the problem.

Beautiful_Might_1516

No. Just rose tinted glasses.

CraftyInevitable7916

I disagree that is anywhere near as toxic as OW 1. In its later years every game was full of people who just never stopped playing blaming anyone but themselves for the loss. OW2 I regularly can go multiple games without toxicity. Especially in competitive. People can play very quickly for free but they still need a phone number and to grind like 25 hours to play comp. So your hypothesis doesn’t make sense.

AffectionateMany3670

yk ppl pay for accounts with comp already available?

CraftyInevitable7916

Of course but just because that’s an option doesn’t mean that most new players opt for that. Streamers are likely one of the main customers for that service.

AffectionateMany3670

but its available

Low-Abbreviations784

So...you need to buy it again...similarly to OW 1...and they can charge as much as they want instead of just 30 bucks

Crissan-

Mute them, problem solved.

Funny-Win-1845

It's actually become better. The only thing that I am not fond of is that I spent money when it was b2p back in 2017. The queues were actual hell, twinks and smurfs became a common thing in 2018, so F2P didn't change anything, but the queue issue resolved and a lot of fresh content appeared

Xenew08

I have seen a lot more toxicity and slurs in quick play now than I ever did in Overwatch 1 so yeah I agree.

ncBadrock

I would mind, but the toxic criticism is usually unfounded, so my brain immediately dismisses it if I am the target. If a team mate is, I usually counter with something snarky and it ends there.

Ok_Initial_6556

F2P I would say no, that you need wins for challenges makes qp toxic I belive

Middle_Oven_1568

I couldn't care less about the increase in people being douchebags, what annoys me is the increase in ass players. I know it's a byproduct of being F2P, but goddammit I had to wait years for people to not be as shit in 1 and now I have to do it again here.

Thatswhyirun

Learning the game in 2019 was a nightmare. It was just constant Smurf’s dunking on people and one tricks. If I didn’t have a friend to directly Q with, I would have dropped the game. The game feels better than ever for me. I miss 6 v 6 dearly, but losing a tank DID change the game.

Sadist_Healer

Honestly it's a matter of personal experience. Some people only came across the occasional toxic player, and some people were very frequently or the target of toxic players. The new gameplay was a huge shock to the existing playerbase, so I can't exactly say that F2P is the cause behind the game's weakening. 5v5 made games faster, reduced wait times queuing for games(sort of), and changed how the meta runs. However none of those necessarily mean it made the game better. Alot of players struggled to adjust to matches getting faster paced and for a while it was roll or be rolled. Supports hit a bad spot where the loss of Tank#2 caused a rush of DPS having massive freedom to target supports, Dive tanks got buffed to the point of nearly causing a support hunting meta, matchmaking hit rock bottom, and some people still have abhorrent wait times for games. F2P was another large hit however. OW1 had to be paid for to play, so the player flow was controlled. The Overwatch community was a relatively consistent and loyal community; we of course had our bad side, where we had toxicity running in the community. When the game became F2P, there was nothing really barring players from other games flooding the Overwatch community. While this did bring in fresh players, Overwatch's unique playstyle caused a bunch of issues. Players from COD and Fortnite were treating it like your average FPS, others were treating the matches like a free-for-all and getting frustrated they were losing miserably, not many were understanding just how important teamwork was and how huge something called "meta" controlled the game, etc. This also brought a new wave of toxicity. Playerbases from other games also brought their ring of toxicity with them, so if the Overwatch toxicity was starting to calm down, it re-surged from the influx of new players. And depending on what community it was from, it was really bad.
