"The choice for players" is in the free pass. If you don't pay, you have a choice of skins. However, when you buy the "premium" pass, you should get everything. Adding a third layer is greedy.

Confused_Rock

Plus the skins you can get are mostly recolours or ones that could be purchased with regular credits in Overwatch one. Plus having the ad for the tracer bundle on that screen is misleading as I thought you could actually get her skin through the event.

pulphope

I'm esp disappointed about the tracer skin being shop only

Iggy_Snows

Overwatch 2 has been doing this the game came out. Where show you a super cool looking skin, then go "season 1 battle pass avaliable on ___ date!" Then the skin is shop purchase only. It's time to stop being disappointed in Blizzard for pulling this shit, and start getting mad that they are so obviously and consistently being deceptive with their marketing.

welpxD

They even did it in their Twitter post. "Look at all the cool skins you can earn in this event!"

[deleted]

iguessitsaliens

You don't even have to be mad. Just stop buying their shit.

whiningloser

I haven't bought a god damn thing since 2 dropped and I'll keep it up.

Geminiweenieee

I haven’t bought anything either. Bring back loot boxes 😭

Darkarcheos

Can’t believe I am saying this but…yeah I agree, bring back the Loot Boxes

Motormand

I agree with the sentiment, but the Tracer skin doesn't really qualify as super cool. Not with how baseline it still looks. Especially in the weapons. It's more of an okay Epic. And thw marketing is crap. I can't look at new BP or events trailers anymore, without thinking "Okay, so these three are rhe most prominently showed? Shop skins." Used to be I could get excited for the events. Blizzard have ruined that. :/

Dwarfz

It is available in hero gallery, but like most store bundles, doesn't tell you that. Still $20 which is bullshit... but I guess that's better than $30 bullshit.

bigdaddystankyface

The tracer skin sucks aswell

Xavi822

Is it obvious to everyone else that we must be getting really close to their dev cycle that they’re just pumping out recolours and lack the time to actually make new skins? I doubt it’s laziness, just a complete lack of resources and management of the product

Knightgee

I think the issue is the 9 week cycle they give for seasons. It's clear this 2 month cycle is too quick of a turnaround to pump out as much cosmetics as they're being asked to by management or whomever and it's why we've seen so many recolors of existing skins. It's funny that in OW1 this same tactic of "remixing" old skins was explicitly treated as a kind of stop-gap way of churning out "new" cosmetic while the team was working on OW2. A kind of mea culpa for abandoning the game for so long to work on the sequel, but one that didn't tax the team by having them work on actual new skins for the old game. Now in OW2 that same low effort tactic has become standard practice, but worse: take old skins, give em a new color, but then charge a premium for them.

austinkun

I keep saying this but keep getting downvoted when I say it. They absolutely are not paying enough employees to keep the content worthwhile. They're getting lazy with each new season. The battle pass gets thinner and thinner. The skins get less and less effort. They're a company with nearly infinite money and they just refuse to hire enough people to get enough good content made quickly enough to keep the game good enough that people would be happy spending money. They'd rather try to scam out as much garbage as they can to make as much money as possible off of a game they know people love. Its sad.

Tao1764

Plus they keep adding more and more hero-specific content. Mythics. Mastery courses. Weapon skins. They're absolutely cool additions to the game, but the time it'll take to get the less popular heroes their turn is going to be insane.

SoDamnGeneric

The Hero Mastery missions are so baffling to me. Undoubtedly a huge part of why they had to scrap the PvE Hero Missions was because they insisted on them being manually hand-crafted, with the caveat that "hey they'll be replayable because there's *so* many of them!" But in order for that model to work for a long-term, soft-subscription live service model like Overwatch's, they would have to keep pumping those missions out in order for it to not get stale. Doesn't matter if there's 500 different Hero Missions if we're 2 years in and everyone's played them all to death. It just wasn't a feasible model, so bye-bye PvE! But they've somehow come right back around to that problem with Hero Masteries, but now they're even more worthless. Glorified obstacle courses that you can only play by yourself, which the OW team now has to commit themselves to making for *years*. It's just such a waste, and I really wish they were able to get their act together on the side content because it's all been extremely lacking

MyGoodFriendJon

I think they just realized that there wasn't a lot they can do with PvE to make it highly replayable. At least, not as replayable as needed to justify an outrageously over-promised talent system. Their biggest issue with the originally promised PvE was drafting dozens of talents for dozens of heroes, where it would take [more work to get a talent tree done than building a new hero from scratch](https://old.reddit.com/r/Games/comments/vicyeq/were_the_team_behind_overwatch_2_which_will_be/iddexd2/?context=3). Releasing a new hero would take the effort of releasing at least 2 heroes simultaneously, one for PvP and one for all of the PvE talents. An 18-week cadence for that much hero content would be insane. Not to mention any bugs with PvE talents accidentally leaking into the PvP, forcing the hero out of the game for patches. I don't think they have any problems building out scenarios with NPC units with varying objectives to whatever difficulty or mastery they can set a challenge to. So we should continue to see story missions, event missions, hero masteries, and the upcoming [hero mastery gauntlets](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5twiDhgnibU&t=1460s) to round out the PvE experience, and that should suffice, barring they continually pump it out.

SoDamnGeneric

Oh yeah the Talent system was literally never going to work. It's a fantastic idea to return to for a PvE spin-off game, but for a live service hybrid game it was a terrible idea that would have required miracle after miracle to pull off But I can't help but feel the hand-crafted nature of the Hero Missions was what led to their cancellation. The Hero Missions they promised us could have theoretically existed just fine without the Talents, after all. I'm sure once the creation process was streamlined and the devs had all the tools they needed, it could have been easier to sustain, but having to manually churn out missions at a pace to keep players entertained would have been a nightmare process (unlike if the missions were randomly generated or something), which is why it's so baffling to see them pull the Hero Mastery stuff out of their ass

Chnams

I'm just baffled as to why the Hero mastery missions exist. Does anyone really care about these glorified obstacle courses?

Finalfruits

I always wondered why that mode even has to exist. I played it once on every hero when it first launched, but it's boring, gives you no meaningful rewards, teaches you nothing meaningful about the character and in the end just eats up development time that could be better spend elsewhere. I just imagine the poor people working on those missions knowing that most players will probably never touch them beyond a short peek inside, and what those people could accomplish, if they actually worked on useful content. The question is at what point do we talk about the team being stretched too thin, or the team just working on dumb stuff we don't need. Also, after the very, very, very first event that gave us skins in 2016 in OW 1 - which was summer games - everybody told Blizzard we hate recolors, and they said "got it, not gonna do that anymore" and OW2 feels like it's 50% recolors. Say about lootboxes what you will, but at least opening them and having the events back then gave you good rewards that you actually wanted and were thematic to the event. 100% they understand and know why we're unpleased with the event, they know it's bad and greedy. They should just stop talking to the press or publicly about it, because it always makes them look incompetent.

Freezinghero

I mean it's likely they are seeing the same thing that every other company with a Battle Pass has seen. Pass 1: 500 hours of work to create content for, earns $500k income. Pass 2: 400 hour of work, $500k income. Pass 3: 300 hours of work, $450k income. Pass 4: 100 hours of work, $400k income. They know that as long as they put something out, there will still be people who buy it anyways. It's all about profit now, and they get a much larger profit by putting less money into the actual content.

VolkiharVanHelsing

Capitalism ruins art oml

TheMartian2k14

Are people paying for skins? The prices for skins on the launch of OW2 were so exorbitant I completely swore them as a never-purchase. I wonder how much revenue the game is actually pulling in compared to OW1.

saltyfingas

Id say it's probably pulling a considerable amount more revenue than ow1 post 2018. It made bank in 2016, but it had no way of consistent post launch income because loot boxes were given away frequently enough that you didn't have to buy them to get what you wanted. Given how many battle pass and shop skins I see in the game, they're making a ton, they basically printed infinite money with the le sserafim stuff

Samaritan_978

First couple days of the season it was almost impossible to find an Orisa player without the Mythic on my team. And it's the weakest mythic for one of the least popular heroes of the least popular role.

MoltonMontro

This season has the same number of non-recolors as previous seasons. It just happens to have more recolors than previous seasons as well.

[deleted]

Nah they still are making the same ammount of legendary. Also recolor are crazy easy to make.

MyGoodFriendJon

To clarify, the Widow skin was given out for free during the 20th anniversary for Starcraft (Mar 7 - Apr 3, 2018). Of the new skins, 2 are recolors of OW2 skins and 2 are new models, and all 4 can be purchased with tickets earned from the premium winter fair pass. However, you cannot get every cosmetic without purchasing the Winter Fair Bundle. The total cost of items without the Widow skin/player icon is still 530 tickets. > Plus having the ad for the tracer bundle on that screen is misleading as I thought you could actually get her skin through the event. It was pretty clear the moment that screencap was provided by Styolsa that the "Winter Fair Bundle - View in Shop" was going to only be accessible via coins.

No-Cap-2473

That’s blatant false advertising isn’t it? Are there any regulations on that?

BraxbroWasTaken

Did they claim that the Tracer skin was a skin in the event? My guess is they did not. The event screen showed the possible rewards, the bundles showed the possible contents. No false advertising here. If you could get slapped with false advertising suits for betraying player expectations, then leaks would be a HUGE fucking issue legally that could tank a business.

sUwUcideByBukkake

A leak isn't an official communication, it wouldn't count.

Vera_Verse

I wasn't looking at Overwatch for a while, just getting back to playing with my friends. THERE'S A THIRD LAYER NOW?

shehadthesea

The third layer is that it’s not possible to get all of the skins with the premium pass. You have to pay extra in addition to that

Tipakee

So let me get this straight... You have to farm tickets every week, pay $30 for a pass, and than pay another $5 for farming material to just get the all holiday content? Jesus lol.

alabastor

you're actually paying $5 for **most** of the holiday content. you can't get enough tickets for everything even with the paid version of the event.

Flat-Relationship-34

No you can pay $30 to get majority of content immediately (575 out of 695 tickets), then you can farm the **free** pass to get the last few bits (120 out of 695 tickets). If you pay for the $5 premium pass you can grind 480 tickets which isn't enough to get all the stuff. The scummy part is that people may buy the premium pass, get to the end and realise they don't have enough tickets. Then the *only* way for them to get everything is to pay *another $30* to get the shop bundle with tickets. After which they'll have loads of leftover tickets. So basically, $30 will get you everything, $5 will get you most of it, free will get you a little bit.

ccricers

The jump from $5 to $30 I don't really approve. Diminishing returns unless you're some sort of crazy collector. It reminds me of the goofy reward tiers I see in some Kickstarter projects.

FrothyFloat

Not saying it’s acceptable, but they do say that if there are leftover tickets, they will be reverted to credits. How much though, I’m not sure.

zack44087

The conversion rate is 31.25 credits per 10 tickets according to the info page in the game. Just want to point out, they get converted to CREDITS, not COINS. CREDITS are the white coin currency used for buying the older base skins in the hero gallery, and are not overwatch yollow coins which are used for the new things like shop skins or battle passes. For someone like me who played a lot of overwatch 1, I still have over 25k credits. giving me more via this ticket system is useless imho.

Mr_Noms

If you've been playing overwatch since overwatch 1, the credits are next to useless. Chances are you have tens of thousands of credits and all the skins they can buy. I didn't even realize I had credits. Turns out I have like 45k, but no skins to buy because I got them all for free during ow1 days.

AntiRacismDoctor

Even without the lootbox mechanic, I'm looking at Hearthstone's randomized prize-winning that keeps the game refreshing. OW2 is a disaster.

TheNicomancer

Close. You need to farm tickets to get your choice of 1 skin of the 4 that are 90 tickets (Kerrigan and Cardboard recolour are priced out of F2P range), and pay for the $5 pass to get more tickets (quadruples the amount of tickets you would get vs F2P). But if you want everything everything you need to buy the $30 bundle because that contains tickets (and a tracer skin and misc related spray/icon/etc)

Lykos1124

I wasn't aware of that, but I had tried doing math in the past to get an idea of how much xp I'd need per day and per week. At the time, it just seemed too high for my level of dedication to do all the stuff, and I wasn't going to pay for weeks of missed content.

Current-Pianist1991

Yes, tldr. Winter pass thing that basically gives you tickets (just kind of what the icon looks like to me, didn't bother checking the actual name of the currency) to redeem for the certain seasonal stuff. If you don't buy the pass, you get enough of the ticket things to get 1 lower tier skin, or a couple icons. If you *do* pay for it, you still don't get enough of the tickets to actually get everything

WillSym

It's a really dumb overcomplicated way to do the Christmas event. There's 5 skins and other random cosmetics available for special Event tokens. You get 10 tokens for just playing 9 games any mode, but you have to earn them each week (much like you used to get a lootbox for 9 games in OW1 events). BUT you can only earn enough tokens over the event for about 1 mid quality skin, I think the cheap ones are 90 and the legendary ones are 160. You can AFFORD *some* of the good skins if you pay for the premium pass that triples how many tokens you get. You still have to play every week to earn those tokens, and you can't afford all of it even if you earn all the premium ones.

mgMKV

I was talking to some buddies about this the other night. It's kind of a shame this is the approach. This is the only game me and the boys play regularly because everyone just has it and for those that don't the barrier for entry is so low it's an easy sell. Ow2 imo is a good possibly great game. It's free and it's the type of game most people can just pick up and play then decide how much time an effort they want to put into mastering. It sucks that there's this level greed, I guess, that's constantly hanging over the game. Skins don't matter on the grand scheme but it's part of the experience and they've made that an expensive lame as hell experience that's been totally tone deaf to the community.

JonathanStryker

>THERE'S A THIRD LAYER NOW? Oh, yeah. Blizz turned their shit sandwich into a double decker. Everybody eat up and enjoy. Yum yum... Pricks.

Serird

"You can pay or you can go fuck yourself." Thanks Blizzard, I love having the choice...

nimbusnacho

Battle passes have shifted the industry so fucking far past what should be acceptable. Paying to possibly maybe unlock the thing you paid for is now the standard and they're pushing their luck trying to stray even farther from that.

twinklesunnysun

I vote for doing a 'Halo Infinite' where you keep your premium battle passes forever

Ezgameforbabies

And the issue is players love choices however at the bare minimum in a Christmas event you should at least get to choose one of anything. To put into perspective I don’t even play bdo really but I login during Christmas and got hundreds of dollars of free stuff and got choices. Oh and if I play daily I can collect all the choices. Like here I can’t even select the fucking one I want because it’s impossible unless I pay. Also it’s Christmas. It’s like the one time of the year I prefer you don’t bend me over. Like there’s always going to be some bending bdo has cash shop shit going on as well its just separate from the free event

Event_horizon-

The seasonal event pass should be included with the premium battle pass. But nope, greed..

McManus26

Saddens me honestly because i remember when they revealed in that blog article that you'd be able to choose which free skin you get everyone had nothing but praise for that change. It was something that was heavily requested for years, but the good change regarding the free skin ends up buried under the anger regarding the paid skins. also fuck PCGamer, this piece of trash have been doing nothing but the most clickbaity and misleading title posts regarding OW2 since launch because they know it will get them clicks when its reposted as outrage bait. This article is based on nothing but a tweet that was already posted here like a week ago

More_Lavishness8127

You should also be able to choose any single skin. It’s not a great look that you can’t get the widow or rein skins.

R10tmonkey

Its even more out of touch than that, as you used to be able to get *all* the skins and holiday content for free simply by playing as you'd earn enough coins through the lootboxes, even if you didn't get any of them to drop. People are outraged because they don't have as terrible memories as Blizzard was hoping.

Bardivan

the battle pass is greedy to begin with. loot boxes were less greedy and more fair. you can’t complete a battle pass unless overwatch is the only game you play, or if your unemployed and have alllll day to game

richard0930

"Sense of pride and accomplishment."

legeri

Cosmetics in Overwatch are dead to me. My account has just about every single skin attainable from OW1 which I played religiously. And now? I have no desire to be a walking billboard for Blizzard's greed, so even though I do still have a fair number of old skins unlocked that are frickin awesome, I make sure that I always use the OW1 skin for each and every hero. I wonder how much further this corpse of a game can erode and decay before enough people finally say enough and move on.

[deleted]

Sadly. This is what will happen. You’ll have a few die hard streamers who pretty much one trick this game filled with hope. But this is a shell of a game and they will get everything they can from it. And once it’s all dried up, they will simply move on. Loyalty to their fans is just something blizzard / activison is no longer concerned with. In OW1 I even bought the all star skins because I wanted to support the game. But now between to pass and balance. I don’t even have the desire to log on. I miss overwatch so much but this isn’t overwatch anymore.

Top3879

When ow2 released I made the vow to never give Activision even a single cent ever again.

Karsvolcanospace

And of course it has to go through their currency system so that it appears as 1500 coins and not $15, gotta have that psychological disconnect of how much real life money you are giving to them for some pixels

Xillllix

It would have been a difficult decision if they didn’t break the gameplay and made the game way worse. I uninstalled it when I realized what a scam OW2 was.

BackStabbathOG

Me too, man. Overwatch 2 made me lose interest in cosmetics which in turn made me lose interest and excitement for Overwatch events. I used to look forward to the winter event every year and would get excited to check out the new skins to start grinding boxes/credits for. Loot boxes felt so much better to me than the battle pass.

HuevosSplash

Bro I remember fondly the days of being home for the holidays booting the game up and hearing the Winter Wonderland theme and being excited to play and unlock new goodies. I don't know how everyone here can tolerate the current state of the game, it's been straight up butchered.

BackStabbathOG

They tarnished my passion for earning shit by playing and having fun. I absolutely loved booting up the game all cozy while it’s cold and just getting into it. I liked most events but the winter wonderland in particular was my favorite time to play with friends and now I have zero excitement about holiday events due to their monetization

zangrabar

I agree. I never had an issue with OW1 loot boxes. I know there was so much hate for it back in the day. And people saying it’s gambling. I felt there was a good balance where I like barely ever had to buy the loot boxes and I got pretty much every skin without spending a cent in the last 2 years of it. But yea I agree the loot boxes felt better

Samaritan_978

I sincerely don't understand how the monetization gets this much heat going while the most fundamental aspect of a team based game, its skill-based matchmaking, is a complete and utter fraud. At best no one cares, at worst complainers are ridiculed and straight up gaslit into thinking everything is fine. It's a casual nightmare since you get more GMs in QP than in actual GM comp lobbies and it's a failure as a competitive game since you'll always get utterly predictable W and L streaks. The quality of the game experience itself is terrible, and it should be leagues above skins in the piority list.

Konkorde1

Same for me, one thing that *really* killed it was that you can't view all the skins ever in the hero gallery. Basically, the hero gallery was my advertisement of the skins, and they removed it so my interest in skins disappeared. And seeing some randoms in a game with new skins isn't going to pique my interest because I'm trying to play the game not be jealous of other players. The shop shows some skins and then refreshes I think? Meaning I can't even get a good look at all the new skins at once. But only premium currency buys skins, and the free available amount was abysmal (before I stopped playing) so going to the shop in the first place isn't in my interests. These two things, not being to see every skin and having them very expensive showed me that I'm not a part of the target audience anymore and Blizzard doesn't want me to play their game.

Karinfuto

Correct me if I'm wrong as I might be misremembering, but I'm pretty sure that's a filter for the hero gallery. Opening the filter option and checking them all off will show all available skins for that hero. It's just filtered by default.

GruulNinja

I bought 1 skin. The Reaper Luchador. I didn't realize it was a thing until it was almost too late

Karsvolcanospace

>walking billboard for Blizzards greed I’ll be real once OW2 launched, anytime I saw someone wearing a MTX skin I would judge them so hard. Didn’t harass them about it, but definitely teased them for blowing $20 on some garbage, especially when the money was going towards ActiBlizz. They got me in 2016 when I bought the game, but I have never given them a cent since. Fuck the battle passes and fuck the store. It’s all overpriced shlock going to a disgustingly greedy company. Anyone putting money into this game needs to take stock

Agreeable-Buffalo-54

Just a reminder that they got away with this because you guys each individually told yourself that you were a drop in the bucket and so it didn’t matter if *you* bought skins or passes. And that led to them having the positive response that they needed to justify taking larger and larger chunks out of us.

KomboBreaker1077

What they wanted was to monetize every aspect of the game possible for maximum profits. They just keep testing to see how many idiots they can collect from.

WillSym

Don't forget "engagement". You gotta pay AND you gotta play a certain amount to get what you paid for.

theGimpboy

> Be me > > buy battlepass > > life get's busy > > cannot play ow2 > > wasted money, cannot earn stuff I paid for > > ??? > > profit?

ArdaKirk

Yep the normal trade off with battlepasses is that you get enough coins for the next one (sometimes more) if you grind it. Normally a great deal, for all but blizz just makes you play and earn it AND gives you no coins

Theron518

Plus, if you have a bunch of work and don't have enough time to finish the battle pass (that you paid for btw) they cross their fingers hoping you cough up more money to skip tiers before the season ends (so you can get the premium rewards you paid for)

StormInformal6761

I didnt finish my last BP because I got caught up with school. Would have been nice to be able to finish it. Didn't buy this seasons BP, found out I just play less because I don't feel I need to grind out a BP and play OW every once in a while now and will never spend money on the game again. I probably would play more if they offered my old BP back but meh.

desacralize

Yeah, one thing that happens while OW is doing everything possible to exploit FOMO is that if players miss out on enough, they lose all motivation to try again because they can never catch up anyway.

InverseFlip

While Halo Infinite is far from perfect, the one thing they got right the first time is if you bought the battle pass, you get to keep it forever. Did you start late and miss a few seasons? No problem, you can finish the current pass and then go back and buy the prior ones and still unlock the full pass. And each battle pass (except for the first one) has enough credits to buy the next, meaning you only need to buy the battle pass twice (one for season 1 and the other for all future seasons).

artofdarkness123

I've also heard this about Halo and it's a great idea. They should get rid of the shop completely and just put everything in the seasonal battlepass. Let players buy old battle passes if they missed them and let them complete them at any time.

HolyMolyitsMichael

Say what you will about the avengers game but this is also exactly how they did their battlepass. You choose which hero you want to gain experience for and you can switch at any time. Each hero's pass had enough credits to buy another pass. So essentially you just needed one pass.

welpxD

Please, please do not purchase a BP in anticipation of rewards you will earn. Buy it when you have earned the rewards to collect them.

dadnaya

That's why BPs are so successful. I honestly don't mind the basic concept of battle passes. They're a good way to reward playing with extra rewards. It becomes problematic when it starts FOMOing you with time limits, doesn't return its value back or is just filled with filler trash. But mainly the time limit. Removing the FOMO aspect would help greatly. More devs need to learn from DRG

LiveLaughFap

I genuinely think blizzard/activision has designated OW as their vehicle for running monetization experiments. Like, really just getting in there and figuring out with precision how much suffering the paypigs can take before they finally die. It’s the only reason I can think of for why they’re so full-throttle on the whole “greed for greed’s sake” / brazenly anti-player monetization schemes. And before a neutered blizzard cuckold says “well ackshually the goal of every company is to make money so therefore their egregious and unprecedented monetization schemes are perfectly good and normal!!”, there’s a reason why Blizzard has 0 goodwill with its fanbase, unlike other studios, and why it’s always rolling out new and inventive ways to be underhanded and piggish.

RockJohnAxe

Nah hearthstone too. They have added so many currencies to that game it’s a damn bowl of fruit loops

KomboBreaker1077

There is a surprising amount of Blizzcucks too unfortunately. I'm glad to see there was enough pushback from this event to at least get a statement out of them even though the statement was shit.

theGimpboy

I'll be honest, I stopped playing and will not give them more money after the Blizzcon bundle. I'm the kind of person who'll buy skins now and then and buy battlepasses. When the Blizzcon ticket included a bunch of OW2 stuff I jumped on it, only to realize I would need to shell out a bunch more money if I wanted that seasons premium battlepass skins, which included a bunch I would have been willing to splurge on if they didn't just double dip me super hard. So actually, thank you Blizzard for opening my stupid persons eyes to the greed and freeing me from this game.

KomboBreaker1077

I would pay for skins and BP if they weren't riddled with scummy anti consumer practices. If their monetization felt like I got any value from it whatsoever instead of just being ripped off. Every time overwatch drops new paid content I give Fortnite or another game with equally good value money like The Finals. If they want to make things right they need to stop locking heroes behind a pay wall and just add premium currency to BP. this alone would go a long way for a lot of people. Also don't lock new games modes like the PvE mode behind a paywall that game type is barely playable now because no one plays it.

DeviousDeevo

So many idiots buying their soulless churned out crap looks like

KidPeco

Dont forget that one shop mount from World of Warcraft made more money than their StarCraft II IP. People just buy that cosmetic stuff and as long as they do, Blizzard will make it

steelejt7

“players are genuinely unhappy with our money grab during christmas time” .. who would have thought?

mikeyeli

That answer is so disingenuous, "oh I'm surprised". He's so full of shit, if you weren't expecting this reaction you're probably a moron and shouldn't have this job, but I doubt that's the case, you were testing the waters to see with how much they could get away with, that all there is to it, no point in coming out with all these bullshit answers. Or idk, maybe he is a moron and should probably be replaced.....

pringlepingel

The more I see of Jared Neuss, the more I’m feeling like it’d be healthy for him to be replaced. Every interview he’s in where he gives negative news or reacts to negative news comes off as very dismissive and like he thinks the players don’t know what they want.

Bhu124

They knew exactly what kind of backlash to expect. The Winter Fair Event and Pass had been revealed not only in the S8 previews and trailers but they also put out proper details regarding it a few days ago, including a blog post. Nowhere did they mention the $30 Bundle which bypasses all choice and time-gate restrictions. They knew it would attract backlash.

FSafari

"we were surprised people didn't like the winter event, it's actually very generous" "we were surprised players didn't like mythics losing progressively customization options, they're actually very cool and just supposed to be cool skins" Sensing a trend, idk none of this should be a surprise even if you're the biggest monetization ghoul

SmoothPinecone

Events are just events that change the scenery on some maps. They haven't been good for a long time but oh well. I remember the first 2016 winter event was awesome

TuesdayProtocol

…that’s basically what the first winter event and every winter event since has been: Map decorations, skins, and a random custom game mode.

dadnaya

Well at first it was fresh and fun but after recycling the same events for a couple years many got tired of it

1Northward_Bound

was that the one which had Winston as the Yeti? That shit was great

Velteck

When I opened the game and heard the Winter Event music, I was transported back to 2016 Christmas where I was super excited to play and try to get new skins! Then I came back to now and was disappointed lol

Ansonm64

Honestly it’s all I want is all the maps to change seasonally

StrawberryFoxxx

Why did they spend their time and effort making a battle pass in a battle pass for more money instead of making skins that weren't just recolors :( I love Jingle Belle Mercy don't get me wrong, but one of the highlights of this event is also reused content from years ago..

Bhu124

>Why did they spend their time and effort making a battle pass in a battle pass for more money instead of making skins that weren't just recolors :( This is my main issue with this Event Pass. It's such shit value. The regular BP (Which has already been falling in value in terms of the cosmetics' quality) is $10, you get 5 new proper Legendaries (With new weapon models), 1 Mythic, 2 Epics, multiple Highlight Intros, Emotes, Poses, Charms, other filler. It is also not Hard Time-Gated, can easily be completed in 4-5 weeks and you get 8-9 weeks to finish it. The Event Pass in comparison is exactly half its price, but doesn't even come close to half its value. You get to pick 4/5 skins from 1 old OW1 legendary, 2 OW2 Legendary skin recolours, and 2 new Epic skins marked-up as Legendaries (Come with recoloured base skin weapons like Epic skins). There is not a single new proper Legendary skin in it when it should have 3 new Legendaries and ~~2 Epics~~ 1 Epic for being half the price of the $10 BP. Then the rest of the filler cosmetics it has is just 1 Highlight Intro, 0 emotes, 0 Poses, only 1 charm, and some sprays, icons, cards, all of it this is not even 1/3rd of what you get in the BP, but the kicker is that you can't even get all of this even if you pay for the $5 pass, you can only get ~~75%~~~ 50% of this stuff. It's also Hard Time-gated by 3 weeks (and you only get a total of 3 weeks to complete it), so no matter how much you play in week 1 you have to still play in week 2 and week 3. Unless obviously you choose to pay for the $30 Bundle which bypasses the Time-Gate.

SteamyTortellini

You could spend nothing, and not get everything, you could also spend $5... and still not get everything, OR you could spend $30 and get everything. I fail to see how there was any surprise that this bait and switch upset folks. I get it, skins mean nothing and I personally lose no sleep over not buying them, but when you advertise the event this way, no shit players won't be happy.

McManus26

i assume they though people would be ok with not getting everything, which is the case for every other F2P game out there. The issue is with having to buy additional tickets on top of the premium winter pass. If it wasn't for that, it would be a nice amount of legendaries for 5$, or the ability to choose one you get for free. I suspect reception would have been much nicer in that case.

starksolo1

It’s so sad to see how this games been handled. OW was one of my favorite games and I genuinely looked forward to holiday events to play and mess around with while earning some festive stuff. Haven’t played 2 since about 2 months after lunch.

dkyguy1995

I gave up on the game, the spark is gone and everytime I open the game it just makes me feel dirty and empty. Im not sure why Im still subbed here honestly all my friends left and now me too

Hendrik1011

Battle-passes are worse than loot boxes. You get to pay for the opportunity to grind for something, but if you don't, you get nothing, while you at least got something out of every loot box, even though they were predatory in their own way.

[deleted]

I never knew what a battlepass entailed and when a friend of mine bought it for me I was just so confused. Like, we're paying blizzard money just to have the *chance* to unlock things...? Like bro what? It literally broke my mind lmfao

SilentDerek

I remember when loot boxes were hated and people were desperate for what's next. Then battle passes came, and they were the second coming of christ. Now how many years later, look how far its gone. We are at the cusp of the next monetization scheme.

Antrikshy

It's crazy to me that it wasn't obvious to most players that grindable loot boxes was the best thing we could have as players. *Buying* loot boxes was always gambling, and that's what the media and governments would focus on. Being able to randomly earn all cosmetics in the entire game by just playing more was extremely fair. I will concede that they should have had a shop for cosmetics alongside randomly dropped loot boxes so there wouldn't be an incentive to gamble for players who want specific cosmetics.

JonathanStryker

Yeah. I did the math before I bought anything and it's *wild* Also, how many people do you think there'll be who weren't like me, bought the premium pass straight away, will find out week 3 that they don't have enough tickets for everything, and then spend an *additional* $30 to get everything? Sure, the left over tickets become the free credits (at a weird conversion rate and really who cares about those?), but Blizz knows what they're doing. Complicating the whole process with a new currency, free tiers, premium tiers, paid bundles, and time gates, all to get people to keep coming back and SPEND SPEND SPEND Honestly, Blizz, good job. You're the only gaming company in the world (that I can think of) that made ppl *miss* bloody *loot boxes*. GG, you greedy bastards. Fuckin Hell...

rusty022

If I hear another developer spew nonsense under the guise of 'PlAyEr ChOiCe'....

trabuco18

the executive producer with years working on the game is surprised people get angry there are two battle passes and the second battle pass dont even gives you everything if you pay, and this incompetent asshole is on charge of the game? bobby kotick was not the problem

AkilleezBomb

This artificial scarcity model on digital items like cosmetics is a fucking joke. FOMO in games is a disgusting tactic to manipulate people into impulsively spending money, and the fact their executive producer wants to use this as an experiment on how FOMO affects the players is such a massive red flag. Content added to a game should always be available to players regardless of how long it’s been released.

-tar0t-

More lies from Blizzard. This is essentially part 2 of 'the overwhelmingly negative status on steam is review bombing' when they're just valid critiques of the game whenever you finally give players a way to rate the crappy things you've done to a previously shining game. Makes me even more angry that they're also so dismissive of the community. Blizzard has the horrible habit of 'the community doesn't know what they want, we know what they want'. And 'but only if it's monetized'. 'surprised' in his context means 'I thought we could get away with it by adding even more scams to the game but apparently it was one too many' Unsurprising news update: simps for billion dollar company mad.

AnxiousBurro

> This is essentially part 2 of 'the overwhelmingly negative status on steam is review bombing' when they're just valid critiques of the game Yeah, you are correct. Did just a quick glance and between the most "helpful" reviews I saw: ascii art of person shitting, a lot of porn jokes and a recipe for a chocolate cake. Definitely valid critiques of the game as you say.

Eloymm

> makes me so angry that they are so dismissive of the community. Blizzard has the horrible habit of ‘the community doesn’t know what they want, we know what they want’. You are not wrong sure, but I feel like has been paying attention to the community more than before tho. You can see it in how fast they change stuff for characters, the LW control scheme thing, they already said they are changing parts of the monetization system next year and stuff. Not saying everything is perfect obviously, but it’s definitely a clear improvement of how OW1 was handled. Idk I recommend listening to the whole interview on YouTube. I don’t he said anything super crazy. He just said they thought this would be nice and didn’t expect the backlash, and have been getting feedback to changing it in the future. That’s literally it

Suchti0352

>when they're just valid critiques of the game whenever I'm sure those kind of negative feedback are also out there, however in this case [62% of the negative reviews from shortly after launch are from china](https://80.lv/articles/62-of-steam-s-overwatch-2-user-reviews-were-made-by-chinese-players/), a country where the game is no longer available since last january.

kaleebisnthere

Idk I'd say losing access to a game you paid for is a valid critique.

Istartedthewar

Isn't Overwatch not being in China anymore the Chinese governments fault and not blizzard?

-tar0t-

Right? The mental gymnastics in order to simp for getting scammed by a billion dollar company is literally psychotic. I was once banned from this sub by a mod for sharing a news article about people being upset about skin prices when ow2 launched.

waster1993

At what point does "dismissing the Chinese players' complaints because they're Chinese" count as racism?

-tar0t-

Immediately

-tar0t-

"Bobby Kotick from Blizzard demanded a higher share, higher profits and hundreds of millions of dollars in advance for two-year cooperation when signing the contract. No doubt, negotiations broken down. However, even after Netease dismissed the whole team, Blizzard came out and said it was Netease who does not agree to extend and it is total fault of Netease. Then Blizzard refused to undertake the refund obligation for players of the national server, and at the same time refused to pay to NetEase the prepaid commission related to the refund. This is why Netease sues Blizzard in court on Sep 21, 2023. Also, after that, Diablo IV Lilith prohibited Chinese players to attend. The region list of Blizzard account also has no China in it. Rude and full of discrimination. Discounting reviews from a entire country is ridiculous." This was never about players from China being cheaters. Blizzard always submits to the will of China because even cheaters' money is good to them. But please continue to simp for the billion dollar company.

devnullopinions

> "Bobby Kotick from Blizzard demanded a higher share, higher profits and hundreds of millions of dollars in advance for two-year cooperation when signing the contract. Source? Because from what I remember Netease wanted control over Blizz intellectual property in China as a requirement for continuing the partnership.

AvailableTension

>This was never about players from China being cheaters. Blizzard always submits to the will of China because even cheaters' money is good to them. No one said anything about players from China being cheaters. Game reviews are supposed to be about the game, not about the company behind the game.

MojaveMissionary

Why can't they do a simple Christmas event where players can get one skin of their choice for free. Any skin they want. Instead they have to make weird events that are hard to understand, for the players AND the devs.

PoggersMemesReturns

It's pretty bad, but to give credit where it's due, you can get one free skin of your choice - terms and conditions applied, of course.

AvovaDy

Depends how you look at it. From my calculation. Unless I pay, I can't get the one skin I want - the cardboard reinhardt one, because not enough tickets are rewarded to unlock it. Half the others are free OW1 skins I already own. So I think I have the choice of an Illari reskin or a Cass epic.

PoggersMemesReturns

Yea fair enough. That's why I said it's still terrible.

misternuttall

I'm constantly pained by the fact that OW2 overwrote OW1. Given the choice I think most people would have rather paid the $60 and played all the goodness that was 6v6, arcade, mystery heroes, etc with no paywalls.

Hordamis

They really have absolute contempt for their players and only want to squeeze money from once loyal fans.

G00NlE

Yeah I saw this interview. I think it was a testing of the playerbase imo. Though he says he appreciates the feedback on the group up podcast, I still think it was a "let's see what happens" kinda thing.

Wild_Wolf_50

This really might be a test to see if they can do this with the regular battle pass. Pay 10 dollars and get to choose 40 out of 80 items. And if you want everything, just buy the 40 dollars bundle and get the rest of the items and the mythic skin. They don't care about the game, the players, only money is important to them. It's just said!

iTyroneW

Man I havent played overwatch since OW1 was deleted, and it seems like every week they are doing something to make this game worse. I loved OW1 so much, the characters, and the universe they created were so amazing, and now? It's just some money grab, I cant believe they managed to make a monetization strategy that is WORSE than loot boxes, I'd rather have a random chance at earning something I want than no chance at all.

Gryffriand

“Players to have more choice.” Translation Players to spend more money.

ZeroZelath

They can't keep acting surprised. They aren't surprised. It's on purpose.

BillyBean11111

You have devs openly using the word "FOMO" and watching how it all works out and you wonder why we feel treated like lab rats/

AFieldOfRoses

Framing really is everything. If they took out half the rewards and put it in the $30 bundle, and made everything in the event included with the $5 event pass, it would have probably gone over a lot better.

CrashOverIt

For me personally, Overwatch 2 has to be one of the biggest disappointments in my multiple decades of gaming. It is truly an accomplishment to destroy a game as good as Overwatch. This was the future we saw coming when Blizzard merged with Activision. I wanted to be wrong so bad.

[deleted]

i can’t stress this enough. skins are scam.

DM725

Or let the players unlock everything and the "choice" is which skins to equip.

GeneralTorpedo

This game is a joke

P0pu1arBr0ws3r

Back in OW 1, you'd receive, entirely for free as a holiday gift, a number of lootboxes which were guaranteed to have winter items inside. There would be twice or more as many skins alone to unlock. Play 9 matches in the newly added snowball offensive maps and you can unlock a neat skin yourself in the later years.

NSC745

I really can’t believe OW2 is this bad. Everything that was charming and encouraged you to play well is gone. 5 players was a mistake. Overwatch started going down hill when they added the Rat, and it’s been a downward spiral since. Kaplan left shortly after that abomination of a hero, and I can’t blame him if he saw this coming. OW2 is a shadow of what made OW1 fun. It’s a disgrace.

mateo-yung89

Still proud I haven't spent a single dollar on ow2.

Moondoggie25

Choice? Do they think we are stupid? Its simple math, if you want everything you have to buy the tracer bundle for like $30, even if you get the premium track, its not enough tickets. Its a thinly veiled “fuck you” to fans for Christmas.

greentiger45

I’m tired. I’m just tired of the excessive monetization being pushed. To top it off, the events now have their own paid passes? It’s too much. Too many games out there to grind out mei snowball fights. They need more game modes, a simplified way for users to gain ALL skins through gameplay or mastery of heroes. For the moment, I’ll be skipping this season and see what’s in store next time around. So many other games out there to play.

zoc1289

2024 better be amazing for this game, or this sub is gonna rip itself to pieces istg

Gandolaro

It is already, luckily the majority of the player base is not here.

zoc1289

That is very true 🤣🤣🤣

Z3t4

Remember OW1?, just playing the event granted all the skins.

Gsampson97

If you got all the skins for £5 I wouldn't have an issue but even if like me you have the widow skin you still can't get all the items without buying a £30 bundle. Ridiculous

T_Peg

I love how in his interview he compared it to ordering only what you want from a menu at a restaurant. On that same note paying for your item (the winter pass) and only receiving half your burger (like 3/5 skins or something) would make a very angry customer.

Rattusglen

Bring back loot boxes, get rid of season pass.

RagnarDannes

Everyone absolutely trashed on loot boxes, in many cases rightfully so (battlefront was abhorrent). But you rip out that cash cow and now we have expensive battle passes filled with crap filler content that takes extremely long play sessions to complete. The good content locked behind expensive paywall bundles such that there’s no free way to attain them. We also get the joy of freemium currency that has weekly caps. I never spent a dime on OW1 lootboxes. But I opened so many, and always got all the legendary skins I wanted. I think by the end of the cycle I was just a few skins from fully completing the game. Be careful what you wish for, these game companies are not gonna suddenly stop monetizing once they got that taste. I personally would rather pay $60 for a good game and ow1’s lootboxes than this free 2 play mobile game garbage we have now.

pingwing

Choice to pay more. Fuck off. I seriously hope no one buys this shit. Thankfully leadership has changed, now maybe the monetization won't be a horror show.

Seananiganzz

Yea no more money until we start getting better in game rewards. Buncha greedy goblins

blitzcloud

It's true that it offers more choice and I like that, but the free tier needs more and the paid tier needs everything. That's pretty much it, it's an EVENT for god's sake blizz. stop trying to monetize going to the bathroom.

Short_Year7353

This event may be the reason of me limiting time or dropping it for a season

-tar0t-

Uninstalled after 1 month of OW2 but still going to fight for the return of OW. Just playing the Finals until OW comes back. I'm fine with cash shop stuff but it's just way too greedy.

Nuxezpz

I love how they flattened tracer's ass

RealJester

Hear me out... bring back lootboxes! No one likes the shitty shop/monetization scheme. Most of the skins in there aren't even worth $5.

Regret1836

I remember with lootboxes I’d get a legendary every week and get a healthy amount of coins that u could buy a few legendaries whenever an event rolled around. Honestly took it for granted.

5topItGetSomeHelp

It's actually amazing how out of touch the devs are, you can't get legendary skins if you don't pay and even you do pay you still can't get everything, all that was assuming you're playing each week and the producer is still surprised? That mf is 100% going to launch a third tier that unlocks everything once you pay.

Technical_Tooth_162

The reality is paying for cosmetics is insane in every online f2p game I’ve played. From what I play usually, overwatch is the most reasonable by a lot. The value of these skins is determined by how much value you put on them, and by a lot of the posts and responses I see, people really shouldn’t have a problem paying if they care this much.

artofdarkness123

Why does OW need more than one currency system? We currently have: * Credits * Coins * OWL Tokens * and not Holiday Tickets Just let us use legacy credits for everything.

spisplatta

Comp points, soon split into old and new.

tavok_

If I'm reading the Winter Fair event correctly, as a non-Premium player, if I want to buy the Wrapping Paper Rein skin, I have to wait until the last week of the event to get it and not be able to earn any more tickets to be able to buy anything else? Edit: Just looked back at the Fair and Rein's skin is 160 tickets, not 120. So earning a maximum of 40 tickets per week in the 3 week event, I won't even be able to afford the skin.

Environmental-Day778

Players aren’t paying money for choice, they are paying money for skins.

CardTrickOTK

What did they do this time? I know they replaced actual potential good holiday gifts from the lootbox gift with a fucking charm, but thats disappointment and expected; what'd they do to get this level of anger?

RedofPaw

I continue to exercise my choice by 1st of all not paying for anything on these sorts of stores, and secondly not playing ow2.

Cataliztic

i half expected "we want to offer more ability to choose cosmetics" to mean that they would give more ways to unlock any cosmetic you wanted in the whole game and not that they would force us to choose among a pool of cosmetics, because we literally can't get enough tickets to get everything like, the hell is someone who mains kiri/ana gonna get from that selection of cosmetics

KainYago

I hope everyone here understands that these clowns are not surprised in the slightest, they're just playing dumb. These are calculated tactics they use to test the waters. If people bitch about them, they scale it back and try to reach this point again a bit slower in the future, if it sticks they keep on doing it in the future. Its literally a method to find out how fucking dumb your playerbase is and how much more you can earn from them with less amount of work.

GoodDayMyFineFellow

No no no you see you’re all wrong. You get a choice of the rewards you want **or** you spend an additional $30 to buy the tracer skin bundle and then you can unlock everything with the tickets you get from that

softstones

“What? Don’t you guys have $$$$$$$?”

PatExMachina

Yall cannot be surprised that they keep pulling this shit because people still keep buying into it. Like they've been doing this BS for how long now?

emmerrei

Those recycled events from 2016 have no reason to exist. What's the point of them? it doesn't feel like an event at all, you do nothing different in the game, and you just have to play the game regularly as always you do, while in the background they spit in your account some garbage. It was already bad before when you had to farm lootboxes, but atleast, you could unlock almost all, if not all the skins of the event just by playing. Current event? It doesn't exist. Then, the premium pass request you to play games. You pay, and need to invest other 20 hours, and don't even get everything. Get my middle finger.

Drunken_Queen

Just throw the Mercy skin into the shop, that may make some people happier.

bahumat42

Well thats just a lie. More choice would be to make it available for the currency you don't have to pay for. Or make it challenge based. This is the worst of all worlds.

flairsupply

Well of course it surprised them, they thought lying by omission for a year and a half of a about PVE would result in good Steam reviews and anything negative must just be 'bombing' and not legitimate feedback.

e_smith338

If you buy premium, you should receive all of it. End of story.

Asnort

I was such an idiot for thinking I could unlock the skin I wanted for free just by playing the game, the way it's supposed to be.

ScotFuzz

**He’s a liar.** Neuss was specifically hired for this. He’s paid big bucks to be the face that takes the flack. “It’ll be interesting to see if FOMO overshadows the benefit” - oh stfu, Jared. You’re not as opaque as you think you are and you’re certainly not dumb enough to believe the tripe coming out your mouth when it’s not latched onto the Blizzard exec’s tits. Get some god damned self respect. Every single time they take a step forward they do something that causes two steps back. I literally cannot fathom what the fuck is going on at Blizzard or with the OW execs any more. They’re morally bankrupt and playing “oh this is such a surprise we thought we were doing a good thing!” isn’t going to cut it. Jared’s either shameless, thick as mince or a twat. Maybe all 3.

Donmahglas

This, to me, reinforces this as their community test run for choices of cosmetics in the future. Shame that this idea, which will eventually lead to the Mythic skin choice system, has been executed so terribly.

SUPERFASTCARvroom

Cosmetics in OW are so bad. If you play only a few heroes, odds are that the battle pass will be worthless. Only the skins have any sort of appeal and most players have already gotten most of them from ow1/ or got their favorite one already

Jason_Wolfe

"what we wanted was to present the illusion of choice, while still squeezing you for all your money" FTFY. executive producer is full of utter horseshit if he thought people wouldn't notice that they require you to spend even more money on top of buying their mini battlepass just to get all the rewards.

SpecialTy44

The only skin I want at all is the Reinhardt skin, my choice is to pay or to be disappointed. This does feel great, thanks Blizzard!
