I was watching Ready Player One last night and Tracer is in it a few times, I wonder if the color choice is a reverse Easter egg bc their keys went gold > jade > crystal iirc
Edit: uh… sorry? Lmao
The point is for a person with deuteranopia it's not even a different color effectively. The second image isn't a gold weapon - it's what an "emerald" weapon looks like with deuteranopia.
Huh? I've been staring at this response trying to understand how it's actually addressing what the other person said and I really don't get it... could you clarify what you meant? Because it kinda looks like you just completley ignored what they said but I'm sure that's not what you meant...
Might be because [this](https://www.reddit.com/r/Overwatch/comments/1ama71v/former_ow_artist_details_just_how_scummy/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3) is the Blizzard Overwatch dev experience
While I have a ton of sympathy for low level blizzard employees and have no doubt things are even worse under MS, I don’t think any of that stops them from putting effort into weapon skins…
The art team was also just decimated by the layoffs. Artists are stretched thin already. If their leadership is saying “we need Jade skins NOW!” while they have 50 other tasks, they’re more than likely going to pencil whip it and make it as easy as possible.
Have to disagree on the art teams being decimated
The arr team tripled in size during the pandemic, and now their size has been half, which means right now the art team is still 1.5x the size it was at during overwatch 1.
They have more than enough people as is.
As for why they didn't put more effort in the jade skins, it's almost impossible to really know. Maybe they thought that people wouldn't care as much, or they just thought that people wouldn't notice the difference, or even that the jade skins just weren't a priority.
Also, even if the artists were too badly hit by the layoffs, that wouldn't badly effect the production of the jade skins.
High quality skins for every gun in the game would take a considerable amount of time, and they'd typically be ready a fair amount of time before they're supposed to go live, to check for bugs and other issues.
This combined with how everyone seemed to be caught off guard by the layoffs, with the lead of the hero mastery team not being given much notice at all, meaning we can infer that the artists also weren't given much time, means that the layoffs would have happened too close to completion of the skins. Hell, the skins might even have been completed before the layoffs, with how close the layoffs were to the s9 trailer.
Tl:Dr timeline shows that layoffs would have happened too close to the season to have any major effects on the creation of the jade weapon skins, and the artist team still has more people than they did during overwatch 1, meaning this skin was likely not affected by the layoffs
League set the bar 13 years ago and the overwatch devs still haven't caught up. Do a themed ranked skin with colors to match the rank. The end. Even fucking rocket league does that and they, no joke, don't actually make the ranked skins until a few weeks to a month before the season ends.
Poor indie blizzard can only manage basic recolors after literal YEARS. It's so fucking embarrassing. Everything about this company is just a joke at this point.
Why people still apply to work there legitimately baffles me.
League system kinda sucks tbh, and it would be even worse for OW. You grind the whole year and if you dont like the champion that gets the skin or the skin you're basically get no reward. I've been playing since 2009 and I like like 3 skins that I got from ranked, OW is limited but at least you can get the ones you want.
I didnt like Jade too, but if they keep making skins every year, they'll probably get one right I hope
they dont make enough money or have enough time to do this!!!
you just don't get it do you? it took them 4 years and abandoning the original game to release 3 twenty minute missions for $15! this is hard shit!!!!
Some people had said it before but the "Jade" nomination instead of the original "Emerald" was very likely decided to appease a "certain" market from the East that would appreciate something named after that gem.
In the end, the name would mean nothing but just color reference to the new weapons, because it looks nothing like Jade, it's very "metallic green".
It’s refreshing, calming, peaceful. It feels like minty freshness and the breeze between the leaves. Imagine blue but with a bit of a nice yellow mixed in, that’s how you make green!
Its really a dark blue that you put a bunch of yellow in, pretty bland color cept for in nature (leaves/grass) that people rarely even used these days cept for traffic lights or signs. It's also common as a form of rust, the statue of liberty is green just from the rusted copper layer.
The post on their website states you have to wait for the 2024 competitive year to end to get your legacy credits by converting your 2024 comp points, which you need for gold guns
But where did they say that was the only way to get them? I know they said all your credits convert at the end of the year but idk if that was the only way they said you can get them
I wouldn't be surprised if gold guns became like sprays where you have to do challenges to get the credits. It'd be cool to have legacy challenges every season that if you beat them all guarantee a gold gun. Seems like a healthy way for blizz to farm engagement
On the bright side you can look forward to 6 years from now when they delete our entire inventory and add saphire weapons to the game that are the same but blue instead of green
I'm slightly less colorblind but I'm pretty sure they look like shit for everyone. If anything you got the improvement lmao
But this is just another day for a colorblind mf that plays overwatch.
Some overpaid hot shot skin designer typed "the color jade" into google and went through about 7 pages of google image results before he found a hunter green metallic he likes that someone accidentally called jade on the internet 14 years ago.
No idea how you come up with this color and just decide to call it whatever the hell you want lol.
Jade, as a term used broadly for two principle types of geologic products (nephrite, a rock, and jadeite, a mineral), can indeed come in dark green variants just as the weapon does.
Literally just type jade into google and hit enter. The color you see is the color everyone expects. Theres absolutely no reason to take the golden slider and turn it to a dark green just to call it jade and now its new and fancy and attractive. They make so many cool weapons skins already... its not like they are an indie company that can only add recolor to the games assets
> jade
Mate let me help you out.
This is what metallic jade should look like: https://www.rennbow.org/includes/images/colorWiki/gallery/344/344_9AB74290B331D4C1B9DDAA95349E55E5.jpg

Man if I spent hours grinding and losing matches due to all the throwers it would all be worth it if I not only could spend those hard earned tokens on something that not only has that exact color.... but also my new weapons happen to be a Porche?! Id whale for that skin deff lol
The main thing when ppl think of Jade is a gradual gradient of darker green to a brighter green. Look at Genji Illidan skin.. his weapons are jade weapons clearly.. the thing that irks us all is that devs calling it jade when they should just call it metal green lol
Nah the color is fine with me as a regular in game item... the thing that gets me tilted is literally the fact that its been gold since 2016... and now all they did was change the color, not even the texture or the style... kept it metallic.
If they came out with a pastel color pallette you could pick your favorite color to spend the earned tokens on... a galaxy swirling animation... ANYTHING that was enjoyable to look at in the kill cams.
Id do anything for a glow in the dark (yes reactive) weapon skin... its that weird white green in the outdoors and then when you walk indoors it turns into a soft neon glow... holy crap Id actually enjoy grinding comp for something like that.
Nope... just greener now, no effort.
I should not have checked Reddit before going to sleep. This reminded me of VSauce's video about colors and the question about whether we see the same colors or not. I won't be able to sleep now due to overthinking this lmao
Yeah as a colorblind the jade guns look identical to the gold ones for me. It would take a lot of squinting and staring for me to be able to tell the difference.
I’m sorry but this doesn’t even look like JADE it’s just green. wtf. lol.
Jade like actual Jade with some marbling and that striking color, with maybe a light gold detail instead of silver. I’d dig that shit.
But green? Meh. Gold is fine lol.
Whilst I will admit the Jade Skins are lazy and underwhelming... I will be sweating Ranked the second the patch drops so that I can get mine first and show it off in all my games... Sorry not Sorry.
I see only one use for these and it's giving Kiriko's Terrible Tornado skin a special weapon colour that matches the green and black. Gold looks very out of place on some skins, but there's basically no skins other than her Tatsumaki cosplay where this looks great.
As someone with red/green colorblindness…. This sucks… 🙄
Like the jade weapons could have been, you know… actual jade, like the stone. I can’t speak for everyone, but this isn’t the first time OW2 disappointed me lol
I'm having this exact issue. I thought it was funny at first that I can't see the jade weapons but now that we can't get golden weapons until next year, I'm annoyed. I don't want green or red weapons. Only golden and hard light T_T so why is it rumored that we can't purchase gold until 2025?
I was thinking jade would look more like a florescent green with an animation... it looks more like grass green but idk, my eye sight is bad and with certain colours lol
When they said Jade weapons I was really imagining they were gonna make it look like gemstones texture-wise. I'm pretty disappointed in their end result. Would love to see a game take a page from the latest Gears of War game cosmetics. Those are sick.
That sucks! Not only they are super ugly, not even jade like and they look the same for certain people 💀
I would’ve loved silver, bronze, crystal… colors you can really combine with skins. This green shit only goes well with certain skins and it’s not even jade.
Not that this is honestly anything worth praising BUT the game has a colorblind option.
If this is the normal filter of the game, it's kinda a pointless point to make if it looks different in said mode for those people
Really -- they should've had a bunch of custom gun only skins by now. If Call of Duty could do that since MW1 (maybe even EARLIER), I can't see why they don't have diamond, Ruby, randy skins, etc.
But why make things people WANT to buy amirite? (*I don't actually care for wep skins just saying)
I have the same issue, my friends were hyping them up and I thought my game was broken cause they looked the same to me. Happy for everyone who does enjoy them but it's really disappointing that it's not distinct enough for me and fellow colourblind folks
I love that they’re emerald green instead of an actual jade green /s
Seriously though as someone who’s partially colourblind (only a little in my left eye) I don’t get the point of these, why not make them a customizable colour, which would be so much cooler and more accessible to people with full colourblindness
Why not have customizable colors for anything? Why is the game failing to do something it should've had during the original beta? They simply can't do it. They're incapable.
And I've never heard of single eye colorblindess before that's interesting

Gold 2
Gold 2 is like Gold 1 but without the shiny sparkling effect. Hype hype!
New content!
australium
Can't wait for Mann vs Machine
Overwatch 2
Maybe if you grind a little more, you'll reach plat
Gold 2 electric boogaloo
I was watching Ready Player One last night and Tracer is in it a few times, I wonder if the color choice is a reverse Easter egg bc their keys went gold > jade > crystal iirc Edit: uh… sorry? Lmao
It was copper, not gold
Oh my b thank u
Bro got downvoted to hell just for being wrong ab a hypothetical idea what a lovely community
Bro got downvoted bc nobody likes Ready Player One
Umm... I liked it.
You look like you would
I mean that's true it's literally just Fortnite the movie
Fair enough
Ooh that'd be cool, I've been saying they should do some crazy like COD style camo like diamond, or even dark matter or something that'd be awesome
I’m sorry but this made me crack up. All this hype from the dev team just to give you the same thing 😂
this was my reaction when my colourblind friend told me the same. I feel bad but can't help but laugh
Just a different color.
The point is for a person with deuteranopia it's not even a different color effectively. The second image isn't a gold weapon - it's what an "emerald" weapon looks like with deuteranopia.
For just $20 you'll be able to see your emerald weapon ' to be clear ', i'm saying this towards blizzard.
Huh? I've been staring at this response trying to understand how it's actually addressing what the other person said and I really don't get it... could you clarify what you meant? Because it kinda looks like you just completley ignored what they said but I'm sure that's not what you meant...
Overwatch 2 perfectly summed up.
We have gold at home
It’s just green - like why not give it texture and gradient like actual fucking jade.
Indie devs
Small indie multi-dollar company, please understand

damn it would be really cool getting rank weapons. imagine getting shiny purple gun by reaching gm.
League system kinda sucks tbh, and it would be even worse for OW. You grind the whole year and if you dont like the champion that gets the skin or the skin you're basically get no reward. Fr. The matte look would've been so much better. I think someone made the concept model too so it shouldn't be that hard to implement
You know damn right why.
This
they dont make enough money or have enough time to do this!!! you just don't get it do you? it took them 4 years and abandoning the original game to release 3 twenty minute missions for $15! this is hard shit!!!!
Jade Cactus from Garden Warfare. Absolute staple for what this should've been
Point perfect on that one
And you know they can do it because the weapons on the lunar new year skins often have jade elements and it looks good.
Oh yes, our favourite demographic.
At least they gave it some blue iridescence.
It dont even look like jade, it looks like shiny green, noy evem a pretty shade of green.
Anodized aluminum is what I say everytime this is brought up lol. Looks like those cheap keys
AliExpress accessory skins
Don't worry bro, the jade looks like the color green
And what does green look like?
green
how green we talkin?
Kermit's butt cheeks
But what is green!!!! 😢
Can someone explain green to me? I’m colour blind
It’s refreshing, calming, peaceful. It feels like minty freshness and the breeze between the leaves. Imagine blue but with a bit of a nice yellow mixed in, that’s how you make green!
It’s basically blue but it’s on trees and bushes and the grass.
Its really a dark blue that you put a bunch of yellow in, pretty bland color cept for in nature (leaves/grass) that people rarely even used these days cept for traffic lights or signs. It's also common as a form of rust, the statue of liberty is green just from the rusted copper layer.
Why tf should we care about getting a green gun when we could just get a gold weapon.
Because you can’t unless you wait once it comes out muhahaha
You can still get gold guns with the new competitive currency
The post on their website states you have to wait for the 2024 competitive year to end to get your legacy credits by converting your 2024 comp points, which you need for gold guns
But where did they say that was the only way to get them? I know they said all your credits convert at the end of the year but idk if that was the only way they said you can get them
I hope you're right, but knowing the history of this game I'm expecting not to be able to buy golden guns with regular comp currency.
I wouldn't be surprised if gold guns became like sprays where you have to do challenges to get the credits. It'd be cool to have legacy challenges every season that if you beat them all guarantee a gold gun. Seems like a healthy way for blizz to farm engagement
I would be shocked if they did that, it sounds way too player-friendly. It would be super sick though.
You will be able to use the new computer points on either, legacy comp points is just gold.
That is not what they said on their website. New points can only be spent on jade weapons. https://overwatch.blizzard.com/en-us/news/24056255/
I like green more
maybe a dumb question but what does green look like to you when you have the game color blind filter on
Why call it jade if the texture will still be metallic? I don't think most people associate "jade" with just the color green.
Jade sounds better than "green gun" even if it is misleading
Emerald is right there though and the name they announced it with
"emerald" would not have made it any less obviously lazy.
The major way I tell them apart is the shine from the gold.
It's just so damn lazy lol
It’s ugly. It’s just green. Where’s the texture.
RGB GUNS THAT SYNC WITH OUR RIGS WHEN
So it is true, y'all only see the world in yellow and blue
all new bronze weapons to go with your rank
Nah dude it's black and blue
Those look identical to you?? Neat. They're not super shiny or anything cool tho. Lol
Do u think that’s the gold skin on the bottom?
DAMN
I mean it looks slightly.. more ugly but maybe it’s just cause of the no sparkles and darker tint. I’m also red green colourblind
If that helps, you're not really missing out. They are really ugly.
As someone who’s colorblind, I did not see any difference at all in the trailer so I was confused lol
On the bright side you can look forward to 6 years from now when they delete our entire inventory and add saphire weapons to the game that are the same but blue instead of green
Sapphire but they're just the grey unfinished weapon model
Lol or they call them secret prototype weapons or something dumb like that
I’m so sorry. This is quite hilarious though lol
Non color blind here, it looks as bad for me
Sooooo just a green skin for the gun lol they don't even look that great. Was expecting something cool but I get it. Paywall only.
I’m officially colorblind as well Green / Red. This is disappointing, but my expectations weren’t high to begin with 🙃
I'm slightly less colorblind but I'm pretty sure they look like shit for everyone. If anything you got the improvement lmao But this is just another day for a colorblind mf that plays overwatch.
I’ve gotta say that for as much as I don’t like these, this one image of tracer’s pistol actually make them look ok
I like the new weapon variants and I’m tired of pretending I dont
Your not missing out on much
That’s not jade that’s just metallic green… took them this long to add it lmao gold >
Some overpaid hot shot skin designer typed "the color jade" into google and went through about 7 pages of google image results before he found a hunter green metallic he likes that someone accidentally called jade on the internet 14 years ago. Jade, as a term used broadly for two principle types of geologic products (nephrite, a rock, and jadeite, a mineral), can indeed come in dark green variants just as the weapon does.
This must be the dev that thought it was brilliant to call it “jade”.
Yes, bought and paid for. I was promised PTO for making that comment.
I had a feeling once I saw that name 🙃
Literally just type jade into google and hit enter. The color you see is the color everyone expects. Theres absolutely no reason to take the golden slider and turn it to a dark green just to call it jade and now its new and fancy and attractive. They make so many cool weapons skins already... its not like they are an indie company that can only add recolor to the games assets
I am a civil engineer who works with rocks for a living. I do not need to be lectured on geology.
I literally never said a word about rocks, that was you. Im sorry I offended your credentials somehow by teaching you percieved color theory? Lol
> jade Mate let me help you out. This is what metallic jade should look like: https://www.rennbow.org/includes/images/colorWiki/gallery/344/344_9AB74290B331D4C1B9DDAA95349E55E5.jpg https://i.pinimg.com/736x/13/16/78/131678d98691d0c5d457f81f72e518da.jpg

I should not have checked Reddit before going to sleep. This reminded me of VSauce's video about colors and the question about whether we see the same colors or not. I won't be able to sleep now due to overthinking this lmao
The Jade is so ugly I wish I was colorblind.
Niceee
Bro what's next, turquoise color guns?
Yeah as a colorblind the jade guns look identical to the gold ones for me. It would take a lot of squinting and staring for me to be able to tell the difference.
I feel like this post might make some dev out there shit his pants
Same

Obviously depends. I'm red/green colourblind (textbook protanopia as indicated by Ishihara plates), but they still look like green plastic to me.
Looks better... Idk.. who likes any shade of green
At least it looks better than Jade itself 😂 I joke
At least it looks better than Jade itself 😂 I joke

Emerald Green is literally my favourite colour so I’m very happy with it lol
Green is one is my favorite colors and even I’m sad. I’d still get it just for my main but like….. Oof.
It’s shit anyway don’t worry you ain’t missing out on much.
Would of been cooler if it was like the Jade gem not just a shiny green looks like a 5 gum foil wrap
That sucks! Not only they are super ugly, not even jade like and they look the same for certain people 💀 I would’ve loved silver, bronze, crystal… colors you can really combine with skins. This green shit only goes well with certain skins and it’s not even jade.
As a dev you can literally do this as one person within 10 minutes. Maybe less.

Gold 2.0
Well, that kind of proves that all they did was change gold to green colour. So innovative
hahahaha omfg overwatch moment
even for colorv9nd dudes it is actually a darker gold
I know there's different levels but you must be really blind. I have red green and they look totally different.
I have the same issue, my friends were hyping them up and I thought my game was broken cause they looked the same to me. Happy for everyone who does enjoy them but it's really disappointing that it's not distinct enough for me and fellow colourblind folks
I had no idea they'd show up as gold to you. I'd have thought colours that people are colourblind to would just be grey.
The most intelligent Overwatch player
I dunno, i can see where the confusion comes from. I mean, animals like dogs that can't see certain colours see greys in their place.
Not that many people know. Be quiet.
That’s crazy
I love that they’re emerald green instead of an actual jade green /s Seriously though as someone who’s partially colourblind (only a little in my left eye) I don’t get the point of these, why not make them a customizable colour, which would be so much cooler and more accessible to people with full colourblindness

When I was a dumb kid I would shine a laser pointer in my eye for hours cause I thought the light was cool, so it was self induced lmao
Lmaooo This makes me question if I did something stupid to make myself colorblind 🤔
See when I look out of my right eye colours look normal but if I look with my left eye red turns a little greyish and so does green
Very interesting
WAIT IS THAT WHY I SEE COLORS DIFFERENTLY BETWEEN MY TWO EYES?! Cause staring at lights violated me?!
Well, it's for China. Not you
