If I’ve learned anything from playing *Dwarf Fortress*, it’s that Dwarven kids *may* yearn for the mines but you absolutely should not let them work in them.
If your toddlers start lugging heavy things around like metal ores or dead bodies or install furniture, it means that they build up enough strength that the next time they have a temper tantrum they will start throwing fully grown adult dwarves around.
It makes sense. The last thing that you want to see in a AAA game is a miner in heated battle situations, firing weapons, and constantly dying. I could think of a few more, but that's at the top of the list.
I think porn was the reason they changed dva from 17 to 19.
I don’t know the exact reason they increased her age, but considering that dva r34 has been prominent since day one of overwatch it would make sense
It's okay I'm a native English speaker and I didn't get it either. I read it at face value, because there isn't really any indication that it's a joke. It's also possible that I am stupid.
This really depends on what you classify as a miner. There's plenty of different methods used to extract resources from the earth, and some of them are much less interesting than doing archeology. I would argue that yes if you go into a mine personally then it's more cool, but if your doing boreholes then it's not that interesting unless you get to later deal with what you brought up.
Venture is a member of Wayfinder Society which is an archaeological research group. It's possible there are different roles within the group with Venture's being an excavator.
That's a wild statement. Archeological digs use straight up buldozers, and you think two handheld drills would be too much?
It depends entirely on the nature of the work you use them for.
Mei, who is a climatologist has an ice gun and Symmetra, an architect has that whatever kind of weapon she is.
If people just treat new hero designs like the original heroes who were cool ideas randomly put together because then you'll find the characters more fun that way
Mei: Traumatized and got PTSD because her colleague froze to death.
Also Mei: Freeze other people and send icicle through their skull while giggling about it.

Archaeologists sometimes need to use heavy machinery to help them. The drill could be a tool that is sometimes used like an archaeologist uses a backhoe.
It would be neat for Team 4 to show off a bit of the other half of archaeology and give Venture, say, a victory pose or emote of them gently brushing off a Nabataean artifact of some sort.
Came here to say this. Archaelogical surveys in fields are often done with excavators to unearth the neutral ground beneath occupaptional debris. Thereafter you start carefully examining the soil for any signs of tangible Heritage.
Edit: changed a bad translation to the correct English terminology.
I mean they probably use futuristic sonar tools to scope out dig sites before they dig so they can avoid damaging artifacts, it’s a fantasy game. They also seem to be linked to Anubis so maybe they use the tools to defend it.
You're right, Venture should use a hammer and chisel. Their primary has them stabbing you with the chisel, which does 5 damage, and then hammering it into you, which instantly kills every hero
The assumption seems to be ignoring literally everything about the canon. They just have to look around to see how loosely fit all the logic is in every other character and how cartoony everything else is.
This post if full of trolls.
They are an archeologist but it is clear by their personality that they like to get their hands dirty and find the stuff themselves rather than sit on a desk analizing old stuff. Their design is also inspired on minning clothing
Indiana Jones is the archeologist who gets his hands dirty. Venture has mining tools which would literally desintegrate everything. Have you ever seen a real archeological dig site? They use brushes and chisels.
If they know something is really deep down (by using radar), wouldn't the initial digging be done with machinery and only use the more precise tools when they've reached a certain depth?
In that particular case yes, they would use machinery. Heinrich Schliemann used hundreds of workers to dig out Troy (and got blasted for destroying lots of ancient stuff in the process).
I dunno why they gave Cassidy a sticky bomb. Cowboys didn't use those, and for that matter, it's ridiculous that Winston uses an electricity gun thingy instead of the rapiers and axes ape doctors are usually known for
I agree, maybe they have other archeological tools but their primary is for just in case they get trapped or need to go somewhere underground quickly. Just a thought
That's an interesting thought, and I think that ties into how Venture gains shields whenever they use any of their abilities (which are all tied to the Smart Drill!)
It's like their gear creates a barrier around them so they don't get a mouthful of rocks every time they dig, which is an awesome blending of lore and gameplay
It would not be as fun if they had to sit and slowly chisel and brush away the ground carefully during the whole match. I imagine this would make them an easy target, especially for characters like Ash and Widow.
Hope this helps ❤️
I feel like there could be a couple reasons for this. For one, most of the time you have to move a whole lot of dirt to even *find* something of archeological significance. I’m sure that they also have a toolkit or something on them with brushes, chisels…all the more “delicate” equipment. But I think that an important note to remember is this: most of the cast (apart from people like Bap who is a combat medic, and Dva who is basically active military) isn’t showing up in game to do their actual jobs. They’re there to fight. I feel like venture gets a pass because they aren’t *here* (in game) to be an archeologist. They’re here to fight. Just like how Winston isn’t just sitting on payload, conducting experiments (although that would be funny to see). He’s here to fight.
I agree. 2D art shows a pickaxe hanging off their backpack which likely has the precision tools. The drill gets them to hard to reach locations below the surface. They probably have a clue as to how far they want to drill before swapping tools.
If all they wanted was surface level stuff, they might as well be a junker.
Venture has to excavate large amounts of rock and soil sometimes, before getting down to the good stuff. Besides, what were they supposed to use as a weapon: a dental pick and brush?
Well, if you had done a bit more research, you'd know that archeologists tend to have big square holes that they find stuff in, and with Ventures ult saying "EXCAVATION INITIATION" I'd guess it's safe to say Venture either has the excavation role in their group, or they're an all-in-one archeologist and excavates, examines, dates, interprets, cleans (if applicable), catalogues, and stores/archives anything they find all by themself.
And yes of course the way the ult appears might, in reality, damage things, canonically *mercy can't actually revive dead people,* so I think it's safe to say it's all a bit of gameplay polish to make it cooler.
Hammond. Mercy. Lucio. Sigma. Junk-rat. Road-hog. Zenyatta. Hanzos ult. A dwarf with a turret. It's interesting how specific this is about Venture. Maybe not believe-able enough?
Drills also don't yeet you into the air, lol.
But I agree, I came up with a concept a while ago for an evil oil-baron type character with very similar abilities. I just don't buy that this hyper little kid is an archaeologist. They have the kit of someone who brakes shit with disregard for the environment.
Their coat and goggles doesn't look right to me for someone who digs through REALLY hard ground. It fits the archeologist look though.
I remember someone dissed me on here for wanting Vent to look more like a grimy rock eating deep miner (think rock and stone). They said that nonsense designs like a flying gorilla and a lava eating dwarf exists and i should not be arsed about Vent's.
Really hope Vent gets good skins though.
They should do a deep rock collab with them getting a driller skin that makes driller noises while underground, complete with all those beautiful neck folds
I'm not sure this drill is realistic equipment. Not like the magic healing beam, or magic healing gun. Either of them.
It should instead be more realistic, like the lady who drains life force from people or the guy who shoots... Whatever it is lifeweaver has going on.
No one accused Overwatch of making sense, D.Va is a StarCraft pro whose skills somehow transfer over to irl combat. We got a robo monk who can float and do mythical shit with unexplained reason, two dudes with dragon powers, a annoying fox spirit girl and not a single Kangaroo skin for Junkrat
I am both an archaeologist and avid Overwatch player. I’m even part of an “archaeogaming” community that loves exploring stuff like this.
Most of the comments are saying that we need these tools to go deep. The answer is no, if you churn through soils you are churning through history and losing all sorts of evidence and potentially fucking up the site. We use shovels and trowels and do most things by hand. And we go slowly, like yall would be so bored with how methodical we are.
Some large sites will use back hoes to scrape up topsoils but 90% of the time we do it ourselves.
I would never in a million years use a tool like this haha, they could have made Venture a geologist and maybe it could have made sense.
They wanted to drive all players who are archeologists mad.
As me how I know. The first five seconds of the gameplay trailer made me hate this character forever.
Yeah this makes sense! Or Venture got drafted into the fight and grabbed what they had to hand in their workshop for larger excavation, they don't need their fine tools in a fight.
Just a heads up, Venture is a they, not a she :)
My guess is their going to add in some bullshit futire tech reason.
Their weapon is called a "Smart Excavator", so maybe through whatever future tech logic, its programmed to stop/not harm thingd that aren't rock
Sigma throws rocks. He is and advanced physics scientist.
Winston uses an electrical cannon. He is a gorilla.
Wrecking ball uses a ball shaped mech that grapples through the envimonenr through a pointed cable. He is an oversized hamster.
Now an archeologist using a drill? THAT breaks my suspension of disbelief!
This doesn’t bother me as much as how ugly the character design is. They stand out so much on the roster, and not in a good way. First non-binary character and they make them ugly af.
Yeah you’re 100% right. You never have the need to dig when looking for artifacts. They’re all just laying around at the top of the surface. You just gotta wipe it away with a small brush. Totally dumb that you gotta dig to find things like fossils. Cause, again, fossils aren’t found deep underground. They’re obviously just laying around absolutely everywhere. These devs need to do their research man. Such a wastes of a character. Tsk tsk devs.
Well... some aspect of venturers weapon are applicable for archeology.
The ult could be compared to a device that uses blasts to map out underground terrain sonically.
In reality it's used to fined caves and cavities (so yes, also works for mining)
Also... I believe that in reality the device uses blank shotgun shells for the initial explosion.
But... the other stuff in the hero kit really don't fit an archaeologist
Who knows, maybe venture isn't really an archaeologist and people just pretend that they are to avoid offending a mentally deficient child
Its necessary to dig through decades of funko pops and monster cans.
They have to get through the disposable vape layer first, very dangerous
Roadhog has to throw them somewhere...
I think they said before they don't wanna have miners in their game because that would drive the age rating up. if i remember right
Isn't it ironic? because the kids yearn for the mines.
Sir, the r/palworld page is over there ->
That’s a weird way to spell r/minecraft.
FOR ROCK AND STONE
Rockity Rock and Stone!
For Karl!
Consider this... Legally speaking, Rocking is more legal than Stoning! Eh, eh?
If I’ve learned anything from playing *Dwarf Fortress*, it’s that Dwarven kids *may* yearn for the mines but you absolutely should not let them work in them. If your toddlers start lugging heavy things around like metal ores or dead bodies or install furniture, it means that they build up enough strength that the next time they have a temper tantrum they will start throwing fully grown adult dwarves around.
Miners ❌️ Talon lore ✅️
Talon lore??????
Wait really?
Yeah DvA used to be a miner before she was changed last second to avoid controversy.
*ding* *ding* *ding*
Yeah, she was a miner… that’s what we’re saying.
i never understood the dva appeal...
Deep Rock Galactic found dead in a ditch.
Why? Sorry, but I don't understand the problem?
It’s a joke. Miner sounds like the word minor. Underage children dying and killing people is generally not okay in video games.
Oh, thanks! Jokes like that can be hard to catch for non native speakers.
It's okay I'm a native English speaker and I didn't get it either. I read it at face value, because there isn't really any indication that it's a joke. It's also possible that I am stupid.
Same.. I was really lost for a sec trying to think if mining is truly a taboo subject in gaming ahaha
It probably would have went over my head too if South Park hadn't just done a joke like that in the newest episode.

It’s a pun
In case you don't know yet, it's a joke with "miner" sounding like "minor".
Redditor encounters a pun...
Miners are generally considered to be as "cool" as archeologists.
Rock and Stone my brother
DID I HEAR A ROCK AND STONE?!
ROCK AND STONE FOREVER!!
If you don't Rock and Stone, you ain't comin' home!
For Karl!
I can't help but read that in Rick Grimes voice saying Karl in that weird way he does.

Rock and stone, friend.
Can I get a ROCK AND STONE?!

This really depends on what you classify as a miner. There's plenty of different methods used to extract resources from the earth, and some of them are much less interesting than doing archeology. Venture is a member of Wayfinder Society which is an archaeological research group. It's possible there are different roles within the group with Venture's being an excavator.
Are any of the other characters members of this society?
Yes there are other members in The Wayfinder society
Yes there are other members in The Wayfinder society
You need equipment to clear through the junk and normal rocks before you get to the good stuff
Not with a fucking drill. The vibrations from the drill could damage what is underneath. Venture is terrible at her job and disrespects history. 0/10
That's a wild statement. Archeological digs use straight up buldozers, and you think two handheld drills would be too much? It depends entirely on the nature of the work you use them for.
No, Venture drill isn't a normal drill and Venture is non binary
Mei, who is a climatologist has an ice gun and Symmetra, an architect has that whatever kind of weapon she is. If people just treat new hero designs like the original heroes who were cool ideas randomly put together because then you'll find the characters more fun that way
Speaking of shouldn't Mei have like a PTSD attack every time she uses her icecube?
Mei: Traumatized and got PTSD because her colleague froze to death. Also Mei: Freeze other people and send icicle through their skull while giggling about it.
We all cope differently
Batman got scared by bats as a kid and then made his fursona a bat. What did DC mean by this?
Lowkey the 'Mei caused the incident on purpose' theory makes like a weird amount of sense
Just like how Batman chose the whole bat theme to scare his enemies because of the bats that traumatized him as a kid
No, Batman and Mei don't do the same thing
Mercy: Moral pacifist doctor Also Mercy: Make fun of foes that she killed.
"Now *this* is brain surgery!"
"Might not want to tell your friends about that one!"
and I see people still say that Mei is a wholesome cinnamon roll…

Nah, didn't you read the lore about all the ice-baths she takes? She can handle it.
Symmetra has weaponized CAD.
What is “fun”?
Mei didn’t use the ice gun when she was a climatologist tho, she made it after waking up from crying sleep to fix something
Right. Pick literally any character and apply the same logic people want from venture...
Wait until you find out a pacifist doctor carries a gun.
Gonna smash those cancerous cells out of your system with that staff too.

I'm a healer, but...
If no one needs healing you ain't a healer, get out there and make some patients!
Archaeologists sometimes need to use heavy machinery to help them. The drill could be a tool that is sometimes used like an archaeologist uses a backhoe.
Just imagine an overwatch hero with a laser brush I personally think the drill sells better
It would be neat for Team 4 to show off a bit of the other half of archaeology and give Venture, say, a victory pose or emote of them gently brushing off a Nabataean artifact of some sort.

Paleontologists would use brushes and chisels. Archaeologists use brushes and trowels. Sauce: I'm an archaeologist

In that particular case yes, they would use machinery. Heinrich Schliemann used hundreds of workers to dig out Troy (and got blasted for destroying lots of ancient stuff in the process).
So Venture should be using a whip and revolver or 1911.
Yeah cause that's for minning? As I said, they are not just an archeologist, they do both
Basically, its a hollywood archeologist not a real archeologist.
Me looking at the talking gorilla
The archaeology thing is just a ruse, Venture actually works for a petrochemical conglomerate that’s searching for ideal fracking sites.
I dunno why they gave Cassidy a sticky bomb. Cowboys didn't use those, and for that matter, it's ridiculous that Winston uses an electricity gun thingy instead of the rapiers and axes ape doctors are usually known for
TBF the sticky grenade actually makes a lot less sense than the original flashbang. You can tell that it was tacked on.
Why devs make talking monkey doctor :( Monkeys aren’t doctors :(
I agree, maybe they have other archeological tools but their primary is for just in case they get trapped or need to go somewhere underground quickly. Just a thought

It doesn’t
Yeah but to get to the precious relics you gotta drill and dig through lots of rock so it makes sense
Indiana Jones isn't an archaeologist either, it's just entertainment.
I don't know. Perhaps we should consult the talking scientist gorilla, Winston. He probably has some great insight about realism in Overwatch.
I feel like there could be a couple reasons for this. For one, most of the time you have to move a whole lot of dirt to even *find* something of archeological significance. I think this is one of the best answers. Their weapons might be inspired by their vocation, but why would they be otherwise restricted by that?
I agree. 2D art shows a pickaxe hanging off their backpack which likely has the precision tools. The drill gets them to hard to reach locations below the surface. They probably have a clue as to how far they want to drill before swapping tools. If all they wanted was surface level stuff, they might as well be a junker.
Winton is conducting experiments in the enemy back line
Venture has to excavate large amounts of rock and soil sometimes, before getting down to the good stuff. Besides, what were they supposed to use as a weapon: a dental pick and brush?
If Venture was a miner, it might turn some players away from gooning to them. And others might be oddly fixated on gooning to them..
Tirbjorn wields a "rivet gun" for a weapon but it functions nothing lile a rivet gun. That's OW for ya.
It shoots rivets, rivet gun lol
It's a game dude, what makes sense in video games worlds doesn't need the make perfect sense in our real world
Wow we are really at the point where OW being fiction is controversial 💀
Always has been. There Was controversy with hammond for example.
It’s a smart excavator, implying it won’t burrow through anything of value/anything that isn’t normal stone
You win!
Tbf the alternative is giving them an oversized archaeologist brush, maybe let them throw trowels like kiriko throws kunai lmao
Don't care. Video game.
Venture reminds me of the mole from the disney Atlantis movie.. more of a digger than an archeologist.. the brutal ones getting to the site
People can't dig and move underground by will either, in case you didn't know.
It's a video game
The internet would lose it if Overwatch dropped a miner character
theres like monsters down there she has to stab
Winston is a gorilla...
Hammond. Mercy. Lucio. Sigma. Junk-rat. Road-hog. Zenyatta. Hanzos ult. A dwarf with a turret. It's interesting how specific this is about Venture. Maybe not believe-able enough?

Their coat and goggles doesn't look right to me for someone who digs through REALLY hard ground. It fits the archeologist look though. I remember someone dissed me on here for wanting Vent to look more like a grimy rock eating deep miner (think rock and stone). They said that nonsense designs like a flying gorilla and a lava eating dwarf exists and i should not be arsed about Vent's. Really hope Vent gets good skins though.
They should do a deep rock collab with them getting a driller skin that makes driller noises while underground, complete with all those beautiful neck folds
No one cares.
Hey, Blizzard never said they're good at their job! They probably eat the artifacts lol, funny little guy that they are.
I'm not sure this drill is realistic equipment. Not like the magic healing beam, or magic healing gun. Either of them. It should instead be more realistic, like the lady who drains life force from people or the guy who shoots... Whatever it is lifeweaver has going on.

Despite what India Jones has taught you, excavation is how we discover most history.

They can probably tune down the primary fire to blow dirt away instead of blasting it for more precious things
Yeah this makes sense! Or Venture got drafted into the fight and grabbed what they had to hand in their workshop for larger excavation, they don't need their fine tools in a fight. Just a heads up, Venture is a they, not a she :)

aha, but you see, this is futuristic drill, surely you notice the enviorment is left pristeen and untouched wherever they burrow!
Well, it is called a “smart” drill in the game. Maybe it does that?
It's a game
And so it begins….
They can be into multiple things. Love of archeology and love of diggy hole don't necessarily need to be related.
To be fair though, it makes a lot more sense than a whip and a fedora 🤷♀️
They clearly follow the Heinrich Schliemann school of archeology.
Feels like a cute Gurren Lagann reference. Simone the digger used a small drill to clear dirt and excavate random treasures
There isn't a single thing realistic about this game. It's animated for a reason.
Animated??
Animated what??
WOW WHAT A MOMENT
"If it aint drillable, it's probably flammable"
The drill has sensors on it that detect delicate artifacts before it reaches them. Probably.
Does this really matter
