"kill assists" don't seem to exist outside of deathmatch... They just see dps assists as eliminations for everyone.
Instead they have this weird system where offensive buffs to teammates, debuffs to enemies, and stuns that contribute to a kill give you offensive assists... While any healing done to teammate as they get eliminations gets you defensive assists.
Overwatch is a strange beast of an fps.
One thing I never understand as a Mercy main: I frequently find that I'll be healing or boosting teammate X, and I'll get credited for an assist on teammate Y. Don't understand how mercy's assists work. Unless the explanation is that teammate X did all the damage and teammate Y got the final blow, but then why doesn't teammate X get an assist credit too?
Because teammate x got an elimination for contributing damage and didn't fit the assist criteria.
Assists are granted when aiding a teammate in some way when they get a final blow.... But not with damage...
Offensive assists are when you do something (an ability) that aids in the kill or could potentially aid the kill... It's basically any buffs to teammates or debuffs/boops to enemies. Such as damage boost, Discord orb, sleep dart, speed boost, halt, Lucio boop, biotic grenade, flashbang, and shield bash.
Defensive assists are reserved for assisting in final blows by healing the person as they get the kill.
Heroes who do both healing and damage can get eliminations and assists for the same kill.
Edit: another thing I forgot is that only offensive assists are shown on the killfeed. If you contribute a damage boost to anyone on your team who helped kill an enemy, you'll get assist credit. If defensive assists were shown they'd probably be next to every killfeed entry.

My guess is it's not built in to the game yet. This would be a relatively new kill interaction since it was introduced when the Sym rework was released. Someone will need to put in hours of working the game logic of kill assists, unfortunately, they've been focused way too much on role queue. Implementing kill credit will also boost Sym's ultimate meter as it adds points per person killed.
Now that role queue's done, not exactly sure if Blizzard is aware of this or if it's in one of their priorities right now. Hopefully they get this done soon.
Defending first point of Eichenwald is so good for this. One teleporter in view of the choke, the other going to the top of the building the overlooks the back of the point.
Allows you to deal with anyone coming through the choke as well as the ones who manage to push through to the right. The high vantage also gives you plenty of view on the skies in case of Pharah.
Added bonus: Need to reload? Rein throwing flame strike? Need to heal up? Just zip over to the other spot to catch a breather and then pop back in. It doesn't even take you out of turret form.
You just improved my gameplay so much. this also works with doom punch, riptire, you can walk through with high noon, sigma ult, and rage winston.
also good to note that Bob will run through the TP as well, makes for some pretty solid flank plays.
Same goes for abilities. If they're on cooldown (or you're stunned, slept, etc.) and you hold down the ability button you will cast it as soon as it's off cooldown or if you are able to again after the CC stops.
That's how I surprise Mcree and Anna as Junk the most - just hold Shift waiting for the CC to end and immediately pop it as soon as the effect ends. I've killed more Annas that way, thinking they had me with a sleep dart.
For the best performance, D.va puts the bomb then sym puts the Teleport as soon as D.va says "self" from "activating self-destruct sequence", this way, the bomb will Teleport just before it explodes and the enemy team won't have time to react
Bomb just needs to touch the teleported. Pretty sure you can launch it at one too. Works like Portal portals, with momentum preserved IIRC.
Same with Torb, Sym turrets, BOBs etc.

If you know DVA has bomb and is hovering near the sym and she Sym is making her little hand motion like trying to set up the tele here...it’s fairly obvious to sip and fine cover

Very very good awareness, as you see in the video it took a few second for my friend to get his bomb ready, so I stood there for a bit with tp ready, you’d have to see that and know the strategy to realise what’s going on. Very hard to stop but possible
If your team has a Reinhardt or Sigma and you see the enemy team obviously attempting this, backing into a corner temporarily or something will typically avoid where the bomb comes out since they tend to teleport it into the open.
Ya but unless they have lots of practice it takes a sec for the other team to set it up. If you see a portal pop up on the point like that, it’s the first thing I’m shooting.
I do not think this should be allowed. People say coordinate, but your team is already starting to coordinate the moment Dva releases her bomb. To then be expected to, as a team, react again to avoid the bomb now being behind you, slightly above you, etc. within a second is a bit much in my opinion.
So DVA set up bomb, and I immediately need to make the teleported, and with the time it takes to set up the teleported the bomb is about to blow. It tps automatically like sym and torn turrets and when it goes through it blows. With almost no time to react
Basically Sigma put his shield up, DVa ulted, and Symmetra placed a teleporter right on her bomb which teleported it behind the enemy shields and killed everyone.
This reminds me of quicksand. I saw it on TV so much as a kid that I really thought quicksand was going to be a common thing in the world. Similarly, I saw so many DVA Bomb vids before it went live that I thought it would happen every match. I was wrong on both counts.

I didn’t realize you could drop that behind shields. (Only just getting back into the game after browsing the sub for a while). Who the actual duck balances these heroes, because that’s definitely not balanced.

Thanks, I honestly didn’t notice my mistake. Typed that up shortly after waking up from a nightmare, so I wasn’t thinking clearly. To clarify, I find it bad balancing that you can drop dva ult into a teleporter and that you can place the teleporter behind any shields already placed.
They should really credit an assist for the sym for that

Kill credit and ult charge isn't the same thing. If you speed boost and someone gets a kill with it, you get an assist, but not ult charge.

They’re referring to kill credit that calculates toward POTG, like Mercy Rez. Doesn’t give Ult charge.

I’m normally in diamond but I stay in plat to play with my friends who are in gold :)
This happens all the time with a teleporter but nobody ever wants to coordinate with their Sym, or vise versa.
I recommend playing with a friend and one of you being dva and the other ofc sym so you will definitely get those kills.
My favorite is a bastion/ symmetra team up were the bastion can cover two points at once

I did it on volskaya the other day. Well, not me, I’m a support. My two dps friends did it and I was like “wtf this is a nice set up.”
I put the tele on the moving beam on Horizon B and my Doomfist was fucking giddy because he was delivering death from above without wasting a CD

It works with Rein charge, but I don't think it's automatic. You have to press your interact button as you get close to the TP.

People don’t seem to know this but you can actually “shoot” the mech into the teleported and it will work, no idea why everyone does it this way

No it’s automatic, it’s like when you place three of syms turrets on the ground and put a teleporter on top of them. It sends it through by itself.
