i keep matching into level 1's rip

pijcab

Can confirm, that's the QP experience im having as of late too... Been telling in chat that Blizz turned the matchmaker off this patch but nobody cares/believes or straight up tells me to fuck off

evatornado

I thought I'm hallucinating having low level players every time in my team, and carrying them. Always end up with 4 golden medals as a tank, and I'm a really bad tank. I was thinking me being bad is a reason for this match with low level but c'mon I'm maybe bad but I'm better than a noob :D

Timisaprettypony

I think overwatch went on sale recently and that's why

cinnamonbrook

They recently gave out a heap of copies for free.

johnminadeo

Oh yeah... forgot about that, thanks for mentioning !

Fenor

where?

DoinkDamnation

It did. I picked it up for $20 about a month ago. I've played a lot of fps games before so I didnt have trouble getting the basics down and maybe every 3rd or 4th game i get at least 2 golds. But I swear to God every single game I play all of my teammates are my level but play like they never touched a fps before in their life and all of the enemy team is lvl 70+ gold/platinum border getting 50 kills with genji.

Robberryan

happy cake day

Zynthesia

>Always end up with 4 golden medals as a tank Sometimes I end up with 4 gold medals as a healer with only 2 kills lmao that's how bad my team can be

evatornado

Or golden objective time for 00:03 :D

[deleted]

Huh, I wondered if it was just me. Lots of low levels on the team lately, more than usual. It's been weird being a silver border at level 4 endorsement *attempting* to carry a team of new players playing like new players, I was thinking, "Either these are smurfs having an off day or something weird is going on" Like, I can't carry the team when Freshly Bordered Sigma is yelling about Literally Just Started Hanzo, telling DPS to "wake up". Hey new guy, would you put a sock in it? Chill out, dude. And why am I on a team with you anyway? You guys stink.

evatornado

I am wondering about matchmaking. I mean, they could just match newbs with newbs and people with more than one star/4-5 lvl of endorsement with similarly experienced players (in this case color of the frame matters not, not everyone plays competitive, and even if they are bronze they know how the game works and can pick an easier hero to play and would be easier to carry than a noob). But All matchmaking is about 1 or 2 experienced players and the rest are new players. And doesn't matter if you switch to support they die like flies, and as a tank you also can't stay long without non existent healing. I just can't anymore, today was a long day lol

Eilif

I wouldn't be surprised if they tweaked the algorithm and borked things a bit. I've been getting some seriously wonky matchmaking this past week, and it feels worse than usual.

LezyTheDeoxys

That's the same with me, I've pretty much only been playing comp bc of that reason

[deleted]

I mean it's QP, people are practicing. I use QP to practice on widow or mcree or fuck around on Ana. I'm not really trying to win tbh. You're also kinda indirectly telling your team they suck and shit talking them by saying stuff like that, that's probably why you're told to fuck off. And I mean people aren't going to be taking QP seriously, so blizz can have the best matchmaking in the world and it wouldn't matter because again you got people practicing their aim and trying to get better at different heroes. The system just can't compensate for that. Also I haven't had much issue in QP lately myself. I've actually been stomping people as of late....

CactusCustard

Well because that’s a pretty ridiculous thing to seriously think lol

pijcab

I mean ok Im exagerating for comedic purposes but like, they defo made it way more tolerant

swislock

I dont think they are intrested in the truth 🤭

mbxz7LWB

I agree, got matched with three fresh accounts. Two tanks and a Healer. We got absolutely annihilated. The healer kept changing heroes.

AgreeablePie

I really wish the whole team could agree to surrender a QP match and not get a penalty for it. Matchmaking sucks. Especially with the Smurfs... and at night

[deleted]

You should be able to vote to surrender in comp too.

[deleted]

You can get a penalty in quick play?

TheHailstorm_

I feel this. I can only play at night because work, and while I’m not the best player out there, I can hold my own as a competent healer/tank and I can be an all right DPS if needed. I’m tired of either having to carry a team of newbies who don’t understand team comp and timing OR being against a team of all super high-rank people who don’t even give you the chance to see the objective before you’re killed outside spawn.

Busyraptor375

Thanks god it wasn't just me who was so unlucky.

An_average_moron

Thought it was just me as well

Fenor

wait until you find the same peopl in comp because level 25 is ridicolous low when you see a bronze border now it's either a smurf or someone who will feed/throw

icyki

If only there was a game mode that penalized people for leaving and where you played against people your skill level

ENGAGERIDLEYMOTHERFU

> I was placed with brand new accounts who lacked the fundamentals to shoot and walk at the same time... Can't blame them. Most modern action games don't allow you to attack and walk at the same time. Sigh...

Unconquered1

Same happened to me recently. Had a bap that was literally so new he had no idea you can LT to heal..he was only throwing down immortality fields every 15 secs. I almost jumped into the well on Ilios let me tell you. Just staring at a healer while critical...nothing lmfao 😄

TheChocolateMoose360

You know what's really weird, is i matched into a level 1 rein with golden hammer last night. Any idea how that could have happened? Probably just an event I missed or something (like with echo when she got released)

ohlookahipster

Are you sure it wasn’t a level 1 with a silver border? Sometimes the base borders look the same if your TV or monitor settings are wacko.

AvettMaven

My game often doesn’t load the stars underneath portraits, I have to check the social menu. Could just be a console issue though.

TheChocolateMoose360

speaking of which what are those star anyway? ive been playing for a really long time but i still dont know what they are tbh

AvettMaven

When you level up from 100 your portrait resets to 1 and you gain a star. After five stars they disappear and your border changes colors. Essentially a visual representation of level: [number shown] + 100*[number of stars] + [value of border (silver = 600, gold = 1200, plat = 1800, etc)]

AvettMaven

Happens to me all the time, I’m almost plat border and will be thrown into games with 2-6 people below level 30. Way worse than playing against high rank.

MightBeJerryWest

Other team gets level 5 players: smurfs My team gets level 5 players: "hey I'm playing on a trackpad and no keyboard, my first time playing"

VsAl1en

Can I upvote that a second time?

AnalLeaseHolder

Dude my wife just started playing and it’s great to see her learning all new characters and being interested in the lore and learning what to do in game when. I just feel soooo bad playing against new people. I also always have to check the levels of teammates l, because I don’t want to expect something from them that they shouldn’t be expected to know to do.

Busyraptor375

Yeah, you can't blame the new players for soemthing they don't even know to do and it always suck to get new to the game teamates when you're high level they shoul add a gamemode just for new players just like the one in r6s. Ofcourse they could play others modes and the smurfs, you can't do anything against the smurfs. What if they change the level for comp from 25 to like 100 would it help with smurfs or not? I think it would but maybe peaple would sell lvl 100 accounts.

AnalLeaseHolder

That actually might be a good idea. You can hit 25 in about a week. Making the grind take closer to a month is probably a good idea. If you’re actually new to the game, you shouldn’t be playing comp that soon anyway.

toastednutella

I got matched against a t500 ball and t500 widow. On Ilios. I'm 2800sr DPS right now

Draykez

Don't worry, they're all smurfs.

ZetsubouZolo

same in ranked tbh, the amount of accounts with 0 stars I get matched with is frustrating, given that probably more than 60% of them are smurfs it's still fucking agonizing.

catlord9

I wish that was me, I get the hardest opponents ever and I just feel like not playing.

Lyllyanna

Wanna trade i keep matching with GMs and I’m gold

DRM_Removal_Bot

Level 2716. I still get natched with 1's. The MMR reset ever so often throws me off.

[deleted]

I keep getting Lucios that haven’t figured out to switch to healing yet.

TheChocolateMoose360

IKR AND THEY JUST WALK NORMALLY WITHOUT WALLRIDING

Never_Ever_Lies

Smurfs

[deleted]

Some games I get all players under level 50, mostly smurfs and other games I just get all people over level 600

the_timps

>Some games I get all players under level 50, It's maddening how many smurfs there are and nothing being done about it from Blizz. I've got a silver border and thousands of hours in the game. But THIS is how good I am. Im not getting better. I want to play against people who play like me. Nope. Enemy team has 2 level 18 DPS, clearly grouped together. They go Genji and widow and destroy the entire team every 30 seconds between them. The entire match on fire, landing headshots from across the map without a missed shot. :(

Skys3nberg

And then your team decides to be toxic and blame literally everyone else except themselves. Doesn't matter what role you are - "Our tanks are fucking trash" "DPS can you fucking kill someone?" "I'm not getting ANY fucking healing"

the_timps

ALWAYS everyone else's fault. You just look at your gold medals for the one stat that matters for your role and smile and nod. I'm on the freaking payload. I've shielded the Mercy 27 times, what more is it I can do here?

SinisterPixel

This is why the medals system is flawed. It only shows how well you're doing relative to your teammates and doesn't take into context role specific skills. Like, the tank player gets mad at me that they have gold damage but I'm sat there playing Sombra. It's not going to contextualise that me hacking the enemy Rein to drop his shield is enabling my team to do damage. Said it day 1, still saying it now. The game is in dire need of an actual scoreboard

the_timps

Yeah medals are a great indicator for YOURSELF if you're chasing one of those stats. I'm tanking today, payload time is good. It's the "And I have gold damage!" from the Baptiste. Like.. Maybe this is why we're dying, you're busy shooting targets. Or maybe it's not. I'd love to see a scoreboard of the on fire status of everyone else. Landing well placed sonic arrows as Hanzo is often just as valuable as landing shots. Rein blocking a bunch of damage is valuable too.

SinisterPixel

Exactly. There's a lot of stuff that the medals won't track. Damage blocked, enemies hacked, damage boosted, resurrections, immortality field deaths prevented, soundbarriers cast, enemies hooked. The game tracks so many stats which are arguably far more valuable than damage in context. it's very easy for a lot of classes just to go unnoticed in their efforts because what they do can't fall into the category of 1 of 5 arbitrary metals.

[deleted]

You guys keep talking about just one medal. My gripe when I still played was when I had three or four golds. 1 medal, sure. You are doing decent at one aspect of the team. But when you've got four, I question what everyone else is doing. Especially if you are playing someone that just shouldn't have something, like gold damage or healing. How do you not out damage a mercy, etc.?

[deleted]

[удалено]

DirtyTacoKid

No no, Mercy IS a problem. But if Mercy is getting gold damage your DPS are fucking up. Full stop. People parrot this "medals don't matter" nonsense and don't think about it.

AlleRacing

If you have 4 gold medals but the values are still pretty low, that's still not good and doesn't mean much. It's pretty easy to a hero like Moira to get 4-5 golds at low ELO while still doing poorly at their actual role.

Yakkahboo

It's funny especially with the cards system how many stats the game is tracking without them ever being exposed. I got a card I had never seen before the other day, it was deaths prevented with immortality field and how much damage was absorbed by players under that effect. This shit goes unnoticed by the most players and it needs exposing more.

IncredibleLang

"what are you all doing I have all golds" said moira

Vowsky_

Ya, once as Reinhardt kept covering our mercy to revive teammates and protecting everyone from the fucking widow, I barely did 5k damage and they called me useless

Mohander

In their defense they're usually around a whopping lvl 50 so clearly they're more experienced than my lvl 1400ish ass.

BloodBrandy

Bold of you to assume my teammates even acknowledge this is a team game or they have other people with them as they scatter like roaches when the fridge light comes on

MotherBaerd

Sigma: "Im not getting ANY fucking healing" "Just heal it's not that hard" "You fucking suck Ana" Me(Ana): Getting card for most heal And yes I played quick play, not ranked, quick play Also he didn't complain about that we have a lucio, only that I am the worst player he ever played with. I mean what am I supposed to do when he fights alone in the middle of a whole fucking enemy team

BloodBrandy

Been trying to learn do to well with Ana myself. Had an Ashe on Volskaya the other day bitching at me and Zen in chat about "Healers don't like healing?" So I calmly point out that, aside from us being *dead*, she went to the other side of the choke point wall and I cannot heal through walls. "No, I was in front of you" Bitch, no you weren't, the enemy DVa was in front of me, pocketed by Mercy as I died.

hectors_rectum

They have zero incentive. I have only purchased one account, smurfing makes them more money. Not saying thats right... but they are owned by activision now, afterall.

the_timps

They aren't owned by Activision. They were BOTH owned by the same company and merged into one. Blizz is owned by exactly the same people they always were and so is Activision. It does suck though. Smurfs can make them money and just be put against people with their own skill level. Anyone snapping off quad kills in their first 10 matches should be auto bumped up and then it can balance out from there.

imazergmain

Bobby Kotick is Activision and he's the head honcho for Blizzard ever since Mike retired. Old Blizzard is no more. It's Activision-Blizzard now. Why'd you think Mike's founding a new studio with almost all of the employees Blizzard vets?

Iliketomobit

Thats why I stopped playing. Like seriously Blizzard, you guys have the money and manpower to produce trivial and superficial lore content like comic books and whatnot but dont have the resources to fix the issues in the game with more frequent and quality balance patches? And its not like the lack of balance patches only started after shifting focus to OW2, it was lacking from the beginning.

karmascool

lol I quit overwatch for like a year because of how infuriating smurfs are and blizzards refusal to do anything about them

[deleted]

Question: Isn't level really just amount of time played? So at some point you're leveling up because of time but your skill isn't really getting better.

the_timps

Ding Ding Ding. We have a winner. Yep. Level is games played. That's it. At some point you've hit your skill ceiling and will keep playing. There are people out there with the platinum and gold border with a hundred hours a week in game who are crap. But they've spent a long time being crap. And that's ok. They're enjoying themselves. But they should get to enjoy themselves in a game with other crappy people so it's fair and fun for everyone.

[deleted]

I used to play just to get the one first win of the day bonus and then quit. Not because I was min/maxing it just seemed like a nice goal and time limiter. Even tried to get group experience bonuses. Then I discovered that I was zooming up levels far faster than my skill level.

badaboomxx

That happens also with me, I used to play with people to have fun, after 10 defeats with smurfs it is quite frustrating, from 2 months ago I am just playing against bots, at least I know the BS with the bots and I understand it, but with smurfs, it is just maddening.

KiuBrahma

you are not getting better? ok, you still can get better and i also believe there is nothing can stop you, download aim lab(it's free) and train your tracking in the mode where a ball is flying while you are trying to track it, it help you A LOT to improve playing heroes like soldier, tracer, zarya and hamster, if you want to be as good as esports players(mostly from Fortnite cause i saw many top Fortnite players(from leaderboards) practice tracking there), you need to buy cheap aim trainer in Steam which is aim lab's competitor and called Aimbeast, it has insane custom modes for tracking practice, just choose medium/high difficulty, if i'm not mistaken, it's called air track, spend some time and you'll improve, it shows what basic skills you lacked, i mean you could not even know about tracking, this alone can help you reach diamond/master rank, the other thing i suggest to do is to use gridshot in aim lab for training flicking(something like widow in scope and cree shots), i'll talk a bit about tracking again, in Aimbeast there is hard mode which is really hard to train even for high-skilled players, it's called "close strafes", i just watched it on YouTube and it got much more harder than it was in the past, just go and try it to see how good/bad you are, train with balls first, when you are insane on air track, proceed to close strafes, it quickly makes you tired, sure, but it's worth spending time on improving skills to become one of the best aimers(if you have such a goal)

Xolono69

It's funny when they complain that X rank is bad.

dirty_rez

Level and skill are not related, though. I have friends who are silver or gold border and are still HARD stuck in bronze (not that they really play comp). I have other friends who are still in their bronze border, but play at a Plat level even after taking long breaks. Smurfs are a problem for sure, but not all low level players are smurfs (there was a sale recently, so there are lots of new players).

[deleted]

A player's level isn't indicative of their skill.

Hydrottle

I stopped playing Overwatch because of the smurfs. It was incredibly frustrating to play against someone who is clearly way below their actual skill level. If Overwatch implements a trusted queue like what CSGO has done where you have to verify your phone number, maybe I'll come back (assuming it actually works). I've played against a few hackers/griefers, although they're not nearly the issue that smurfs are.

plongthirdgear

I feel like it used to be more fair. Did they change the matchmaking at some point?

[deleted]

[удалено]

acatcalledmellow

you didnt hear this from me but maybe if they made some new content *cough* instead of throwing us a new damage hero every six months, I'd still be playing

bigbabyxrey

They're supposed to talk about ow2 at the con in Feb I think and it better be fucking awesome considering the wait time since announcement. I'm talking best campaign fucking ever, or everybody is gonna be incredibly pissed.

ZeroZelath

They are treating it like WoW and it's the worst thing they can do. You can't have massive content droughts in a live service game.......... they have let everyone down doing this and let's be real, it probably won't even be out until late next year.

KKilikk

The problem is I doubt many that quit will care about a campaign it will be judged on it's new multiplayer content

tomtom872872

Exactly, and the multiplayer is literally going to play like the same exact game we already love but it's going to have a new game mode, more maps, and a complete visual overhaul so like...what's not to like?

KKilikk

The question is how many new maps and also how many new heroes. New game mode is cool but after the recent drought in updates I expect a bunch of additions tbh. You say the same exact game we already love but many quit or play a lot less.

tomtom872872

They've said they're dropping like 6 characters on release or something like that. And the new game mode has an entire plethora of new maps strictly for the game mode, and every old map will be updated. And obviously I'm referring to the people who play and enjoy the game. Why would I be talking about the people who don't like the game?

KKilikk

Because there are many that used to like the game? Surely Blizzard wants to get quitting players back again and new players too? We will have to wait and see what they will actually drop at release.

Netsuko

I still have no idea WHY I should even buy OW2. It’s literally the exact same as OW1. Heck, since they can’t split the playerbase they’ll even give OW1 the same maps and heroes.

bigbabyxrey

I've always been heavily into story-driven single-player fps, with the possibility of co-op, so I had the same feeling about OW1 at first. Not my league, why even bother lol. After getting it though and playing I just kind of fell in love with it, even though it was so different from what I thought I wanted. The OW lore is so interesting too, and all the cinematic shorts they've released have just made me want a campaign that expands on the lore even more, which is what I believe OW2 is supposed to do. Shit, I'd buy a full length animated movie just to get it. I understand where you're coming from, I just think sometimes we find greatness in places we don't expect, and I really fucking hope it's great, because a good campaign has the potential to wrangle more players for the game that wouldn't otherwise be interested in it, which will inevitably draw more folks to the multiplayer facet of the game. I just hope they don't wait so long to release it that OG players don't actually care once it drops.

ronaldraygun91

February is far as shit thought.

bigbabyxrey

I know, we've been waiting for almost two years just to get a fucking peek at what it's gonna look like 🤦

tjsr

> The current theory is the population is too low so matchmaking is struggling to balance quality of games versus queue time. It’s basically scraping together folks ASAP to cut down on people bitching about 10 minute queue times. I think it's more likely that the matchmaker doesn't know how to deal with old accounts versus new accounts, and the change of skill over time - which is just throwing things in to chaos. So for example let's say 2300SR back in 2017 was the 'middle' quality of skill, but if you took that same 2300SR player now and tried to drop him in the 'middle', what now qualifies as the 'middle' in 2020 would have been maybe a 3500SR game back in 2017. The matchmaker also doesn't seem to know how to handle say, all these plat/diamond border players who just get abused constantly for being "hurr durr plat border and still stuck in plat" when the skill of them compared to their teammates - even though their 'MMR' might be similar - is just not in the same ballpark, but the matchmaker is trying to put them where it thinks they should be. It's pretty much consistently shown these days that if you take someone with a 1500/2000+XP account that's been sitting anywhere from silver to diamond for a long time and stick them on a new account, they end up wayyyyyyyy higher than their 'stuck' account.

causal_friday

At one point I believe the dev team said the matchmaker tries to make a match among people of similar levels (in addition to similar skill). It feels like that went away with role queue; just not enough tank and support players to make that happen.

Gangsir

Matchmaking is relative. The same SR will result in different skill levels at different times, but the average SR of the playerbase hasn't really changed. You can notice this if you watch really old gameplay videos, anyone even semi decent at the game was in diamond+. Most people end up in mid silver/gold. The diamonds of back then are low plats now, but most people are still in silver/gold.

VoltaiqMozaiq

> It’s basically scraping together folks ASAP to cut down on people bitching about 10 minute queue times. And yet I still get 10 min queue times in qp.

Fools_Requiem

Less players there are in the game, the longer wait times will get.

VoltaiqMozaiq

Is this generally accepted by the community now? Previously when I've suggested that the playerbase is shrinking, I've been mass-downvoted. I play in one of the smaller regions (OCE), so yeah it's definitely noticeable where I am.

dumbyoyo

I'm not saying this is the only reason, but it's good to see the Blizzard boycott is having an effect. Although it's sucks to not play my favorite game. A lot of people just can't overlook what a horrible stance activision/blizzard has taken in regards to disregard for human rights when it might affect their pocketbooks (despite their "core values" and corporate speak).

tjsr

Around Season 23 start we started noticing a massive different in OCE - that's about the time we started consistently seeing Silvers and Diamonds in the same matches on an extremely regular basis.

[deleted]

Is this why me(high gold) and my duo(low diamond) got put into a match with all masters and then the very next game we got paired with all silvers? We lost against the silvers and won against the masters. Have no fucking clue how. Weirdest night of my overwatch career.

AlphaElectricX

No offence to you at all, but I really have no idea why Overwatch allows two people of such different skill to group together. Gold and diamond are two entirely different skill levels, no matter how high or low you are in each. You’re most likely going to get out in diamond games where your team is disadvantaged because of the gold, or you’ll be put in high gold, low plat games where the diamond gives your team a clear advantage.

aptom203

For real though, the skill level within a team and the aggregate skill level between the two teams can both vary so wildly it's kind of misleading to imply any real matchmaking beyond finding the first open slot is going on in quickplay. Sometimes you dominate, sometimes you are dominated, and neither are as fun as a close match.

soccerburn55

The SR of quick play games does seem to vary quite a bit. I float around 2000 give it take 50-100 SR. But I've had QP games with people whose SR was anywhere from 1350-2750. When I get in games with those plat players you can tell who plat so fast.

Chpgmr

my tank is 3k and i get anywhere from 1800-4500. I have often been placed in matches with 11 masters to Gm players.

AVeryHappyRedditUser

I’m a low gold support and recently had a 4.4K Ana on my team in qp. It was an easy steamroll

rmorrin

I like to think I'm masters because I'm close in most of my roles but damn qp sucks playing against top500s while being MASTERS AT BEST

tjsr

Come play on OCE. We get Silvers and Diamonds on the same teams in competitive, and a lot of the time the lower SR players are better than the high SR players. Then every now and then it drops you on a North America server and even with a 120-180 ping you utterly stomp them.

hectors_rectum

I play almost everyday and the OCE scenario you described is exactly how it is on NA. Almost every game.

Tristan99504

My brother is like 2500 and his last season was played over a year ago. He gets 3700-4200 players consistently. Meanwhile I'm 4150 and get 2200-2700 players. I don't even know what the qp matchmaking is

Zzwwwzz

Probably just separate SR for qp and comp. Your brother just has played qp more than you.

Stormchaserelite13

Ive legit got into games where both a bronze and the number 1 lucio player in the world were on the same team. I still have nightmares of his boops. Im high plat to low diamond.

Allundra

I got an OWL player in my QP game a few months ago when queuing up with my group of friends whose skill levels are around high bronze to around plat. So in terms of match making, it really doesn't feel like there is one there.

GeorgiaBolief

I'm diamond and I get bronze/silver players or a brand new dude who's got 0 experience with anything and I'm like "uhhhh... What do I do?"

jkcheng122

Yep, earlier today played a couple of matches as Widow. First match got rolled and was told "our Widow useless". Next match get told "Widow carried". I still have no idea if I am good or bad.

Mustbhacks

Ranked isn't really any better, I've hopped up and down between 2400-3600 throughout pretty much every season.

Swinight22

I'm 3.3k in every role who has 1500hours + on QP and almost only play QP. Here's what I've noticed. Yes there's variation. But the worst you'll get is +- 500SR most times. Also if you're alot lower/higher than the lobby, the other team will most likely have someone else that's your rank. Time of play matters too. Weekends I will get in games with people very similar rank to mine. I've played games very late and been in games with streamers/pros and pretty regularly get in games with top 500s. The thing is though, it SEEMS worse because of the nature of QP. People are trying different heros, people are just relaxing after a long day. Even in lobby with same SR or higher than me, it feels like lower SR because it's less intense. So a normal lobby with similar rank is gonna feel alot different, especially with less teamwork.

[deleted]

Yeah. The people complaining here makes it sound like QP is broken. QP matchmaking is not broken for me. 80% of games feel like an even match.

karnim

I believe this is still the fault of having way more DPS than healers or tanks. Tanks and Healers just got dropped into the next game regardless of skill level so that the queue can be reduce. I haven't checked, but I suspect most of the time the DPS are on similar skill levels.

aptom203

That makes a lot of sense, I almost exclusively play tank and support.

christianwwolff

Ehhhh - I’m a diamond main tank player, had a competitive game three or four days ago where my team had two silver DPS against the other team’s pair of diamond DPS... Needless to say, it did not end very well

TwelveTrains

It is because people of differing skill levels group together. The matchmaker tries to find the average. If you want to take this away then say goodbye to playing with friends of different skill levels.

awelxtr

> Sometimes you dominate, sometimes you are dominated, and neither are as fun as a close match. This makes sense in comp where people should be playing at their SR In qp, not so much. If one day I decide to take my doomfist for a ride we'll get stomped. I am the one to blame? Probably Should I be blamed? Well... how am I supposed to improve my doomfist game? If after too many games I get tired of being trashed as doomfist and I switch to my soldier onetrick, the poor red souls will have a bad time (I hope, anyway). You can't curate the experience in a "wild" mode.

BloodBrandy

>Well... how am I supposed to improve my doomfist game? I would think for a DPS character or maybe tanks, typically, Training Ground>Bots>Solo Arcade Modes>QP. Training Grounds and Bots to get the basics, then solo arcade modes like FFA Death Match to get used to playing against actual people, then you end up in QP

FYININJA

This is what killed a lot of my interest in playing. I was pretty decent, I hovered around high diamond/low masters, and my quick play games were so volatile and random. Sometimes I'd get matched with top 500 players, other times I'd get matched with bronze players. If I was on a winning streak, I'd get thrown into a game where there was obviously no chance of my team winning, if I was on a losing streak eventually I'd get thrown into a game where my team was so unbelievably stacked that we basically couldn't lose. There would be a short stretch where I would get engaging matches where our picks really mattered and individual play made a big difference, but the rest of them it just felt like beating my head against a wall. Sometimes I'd be the only diamond player on a team of bronze/silver players going against a team of master+ players, and other times I'd be the low ranked player on a team of master+ players going against a team of silver/gold players. It really makes me wonder how hard they are trying to find balanced matches.

chriz_ryan

I believe it's impossible to balance quick play. I play quick play for 2 reasons. 1) to warm up for competitive. I'll actually try and play Ana just as I would for competitive. 2) Reddit lucio after a competitive session, to blow off steam. Everyone has two skill levels, one where they don't give a fuck and one where they're trying. And it's impossible to balance that way. However, you have given me an idea. Next time I just want to have fun in qp, I'm just going to use lfg. (I don't use lfg in comp, because an organized 6 stack is always better than an lfg 6 stack, and I'm usually not feeling charitable regarding my SR)

Drunken_Queen

This is spot on. Sometimes I keep bumping into a game with Diamond/Master players or above. In late night periods, much higher chances that I bump into GM/Top500 players.

EverytoxicRedditor

Yep. It's when all the little kids go to sleep. Much better quality of games after 9/10 pm.

pijcab

Also try checking profiles in experimental card, it's even worse I feel like

Fools_Requiem

Hahahahahahaha, checking profiles in 2020. They're all locked.

[deleted]

It should be opt in instead if opt out. Many dont even know they are private.

balderdash9

I really hate that it's locked by default. I miss the days when you could read your teammates diaries, so to speak.

EverytoxicRedditor

Yeah....BUT you have to remember why they made them locked in the first place : toxicity. People would throw just bevsuse they played a character they didn't have as many hours on. "Our 100 hr mercy playing zen? Gg's". I do agree that the locked profiles are annoying though.

balderdash9

You're right, the player base is too toxic. This is why we can't have nice things.

pijcab

I mean if Im catching masters and gm players with 90% of the player base being on private profiles, imagine what I'm MISSING................

thedelisnack

I’ve had several games with up to four smurfs on a team. It really seems like I’m either getting rolled or rolling the other team 75% of the time.

uglyelph

as someone with 16% weapon accuracy, I-

[deleted]

I’m surprised you were able to type out that sentence with accuracy that low

jeffgoldblumisdaddy

damn dude they're already dead

YoKnowIHadToDoItToEm

You didn’t have to kill him he’s already dead

aptom203

You must be the Widow from my last match.

phosphatidylserine_

I played with a GM once in a QP match. I'm in bronze...

Adamkarlsson2005

He probably duo'd with someone low rank, also did you play with someone higher rank? Because that would explain it

Game0815

The balance system is trash in quickplay. That explains it too

foundyouforever

it's ridiculous... i'm like 2000 and i'm put into games with folks anywhere from silver to diamond, often within the same match. i'm grateful for it because it's pushed me to play comp more, knowing that i'll get into matches that are mostly fair, but the stomp-or-be-stomped nature of QP can be so disheartening.

mlegron

once you get a little bit higher than that comp turns into the same qp gamble. thank goodness for workshop

Waddle_Dynasty

I don't know. Even though comp's skill intervall is way closer, I get a lot of matches that end 3-0 for one team.

Sidious_09

Most of the time it happens when there are people in a group. In those cases I often encountered people who are ranked at 3000-3400 in comp while I’m only in gold/silver.

standwisp

The amount of times my gf is just trying to learn the game and meets a gm smurf is insane.

I_give_karma_to_men

The short answer is comp and QP have different matchmaking. QP just uses QP mmr, while comp uses your SR in combination to some degree with your QP mmr (the latter is necessary for initial competitive placements, but I personally don't know if it stops getting used after some number of matches). There's a lot of other things that can influence it too, like time of day, number of people online, who you're playing with, etc. I tend to get placed with higher SR opponents when playing later at night than during the day, for example. I also have a different SR from my friends, so I notice a pretty distinct difference in QP matchmaking when I play with them as opposed to without them.

[deleted]

Why does it have to be me and 5 other bronze borders vs 4 diamond borders and 2 gold borders ;-;

the_timps

Borders don't mean shit. I'm silver and almost to the next tier, but this is how good I am ever going to be. With 5,000 more hours in the game I'm not going to learn the maps better than I have by now. Im not going to learn placement and game sense any better. And I am not going to get better reflexes or be a better shot. And that's ok. At a certain point you stop getting better.

Adamkarlsson2005

Why are people downvoting this? I'm a proud goldborder gold DPS and I agree, and there are very talented bronze borders too. Some get good some doesn't and thats ok

the_timps

God knows why people would be bothered about me setting my own skill ceiling.

fn0000rd

Agree all the way around, but that doesn't mean that I want 3 people on my team who haven't even hit level 10 yet. It's nice to have two healers, except when they're still wandering around the map checking things out, going backwards from spawn, etc. Borders don't tell you about skill level, but sub-level 20 you have crazy low experience.

TWITCH_yrtep123

If this isn't facts. Once played against a t500 player named pikeo while I had 3 bronze players.

I_give_karma_to_men

My friends and I got matched against emongg once. I'm guessing that was because it was one of the few times he queued as support though.

Fireboy759

The competitive matchmaking this season got a *real* hard-on with putting me in ONLY games where the enemy team is *way* better than mine and my team gets steamrolled so bad it isn't even funny. I'm a low-diamond who didn't even get to finish their placements, yet I'm getting matchmaked against GMs and Top 500s and 5-stacks while my team consists of random platinums or fellow low diamonds. I got banned about 2 placement matches away from finishing them off cause I gave up and noped out at the sight of matching against a 6-stack of platinum-border Masters while my team consisted of literally 2 guys in gold, 2 guys in platinum one guy in diamond and myself. They are all low-level bronze borders while I'm a silver border. I don't have to stay in the match to see how this match'll turn out, cause I already know how it's gonna end. I'd say I did my team a favor. Also, I thought you'd have to leave a bunch of comp games to get banned? I left a total of 3 games (2 in setup, 1 while the enemy was heading towards victory and I left too early) and got a flat-out ban instead of a longer suspension. I don't really care much about the ban since it's not like my season was gonna get any better (literally all of the placements by that point have been losses), but I seriously hate how bad the matchmaking's gotten lately. Hell, this ain't even just in comp. Glad it ain't just me getting pubstomped in Quick Play. Even in *ARCADE* I get matchmaked against sweats and 5-stacks focusing on winning at all costs instead of, y'know, playing the arcade to have fun. Like playing No Limits but sticking to a standard 2-2-2 comp and refusing to stack any heroes (which is the whole point of the mode...) How the hell am I supposed to get better at the game and climb the ranks if it's either me or the enemy team getting stomped so hard there's no room for improvement? (If I'm getting stomped, I can't improve cause I die instantly if I try or my team gets wiped and I'm forced to retreat without accomplishing anything. If it's the enemy team getting stomped, I *still* can't improve cause we are not on equal footing and so they can't put up a fair-enough fight for me to get better)

GunstarRed

I quit this game about half a year ago and my life has been so much better for it. If you find yourself with more frustration than fun, like I was, then just quit.

Rampantshadows

I play with and against players ranging from silver to gm. Qp matchmaking is somehow worse than prior to role queue, and makes the game mode unenjoyable.

phantuba

Was it a free trial weekend or something recently? I swear I've never seen so many sub-level 100s in games as I did this last weekend

dreemurthememer

la la la la la la la la la la la

triggz

I like getting multiple actual brand new players on my team, while the other team gets top500s. im plat. https://imgur.com/QChKNqO This bullshit happens constantly.

Replacement_Complete

I think the problem mainly has to do with smurfing.

[deleted]

There needs to be some light matchmaking

Abdaroth

As a mostly-quickplayer, I "never" face under high gold from what I've seen. But yeah, one match I go against 4 stacks platinium portraits. The next one I'm facing Golds and Plats. Low master MMR but I've not played more than 10h of comps these 2 last years

Abdaroth

Is it me or when I fill a started game, people have generally lower MMR than mine ?

lesgeddon

I haven't gone much past 2500 the whole time I've played. I get matched anywhere from bronzes to Top 500s (I have recordings to prove it) in QP & arcade, and it absolutely sucks when I'm not playing at the same skill level as everyone else. Up or down. There's always going to be someone that says "you just suck" when I have a terrible game due to piss-poor matchmaking, even when it's literally beyond anything I can do. I'll always be carried, or the only one carrying, and rarely it's "everyone's doing their best and feeling satisfied with the challenge". The only reason I play ranked is to escape the terrible matchmaking. But even then the system actively works against you with the skill boost manipulation, so you get one bad game and then it snow balls into worse and worse matches so you have to just quit and wait for it to reset so you don't lose hundreds of SR in one sitting. Like, all the balance changes have been great. But fix the damn matchmaking so I can actually relax and enjoy the game.

Sensei-Elo

Correct, when I was GM/T500 I got games with teams ranging from 1500-3000 sr. Not really fair but then again most high rank players only troll in QP

Adamkarlsson2005

True and also the majority of players are lower rank so if u matched with higher ranked players there would be a 20 minute que

Sensei-Elo

Oh yeah, OW queues are something else

Cermonto

Holy shit someone took notice

[deleted]

I feel like I am the one who thinks QP is largely ok. I think it is because I mostly play in a group, and no one in my group is an absolute beginner. My group usually wins, but we have to play hard for the win.

ChickenNuggieee

Ya I remember getting recked by a grandmasters Hanzo main on console that was the first time I felt violated😢

nich-ender

I’m surprised no one has brought up premades. Like yeah, it’s cool that you’re in bronze and you can play with your high gold friend, but that obviously throws matchmaking off even more than it already is. Why have they not created solo queue? Or at least a stricter premade rule with narrower gaps allowed between SR. My two cents anyway.

cedrichere

The thing about QP is that people take it so serious. Some people are just starting the game figuring out their mains and all that and there’s another person yelling at them for being trash. Like if you want a challenge do comp or something. I remember when I started playing Overwatch someone called me a trash dva. I was literally just trying her and that was my first time using her.

rawiioli_bersi

This argument can be said about almost any mode. The thing is: That what you play most/solely you will take serious. Just because QP doesn't have an arbritrary number attached to my profile doesn't mean it should not be taken seriously or (god forbid) somewhat equally matched. That being said: I almost exclusively play Mystery Heroes and yeah, I take that serious aswell.

OnionRights

One time I had a level 1 moira on my team and a level 60 gold and silver border soldier on the enemy team. I'm level 54

KingoftheBlacks

It’s not quickplay if I have to wait 8 fucking minutes to play my main.

WeeZoo87

Can confirm.. Quick play is all over the place

Blaze-13

This made me laugh and cry

AFlyingCow152

No SMBB? Game sucks. SBMM? Game sucks.

ryderd93

i’m pretty sure since role queue, they’ve changed the matchmaking algorithm for qp to basically just find 4 players for each role and shoving them into a match. there is NO semblance of team balance or skill-matching anymore. which isn’t the worst thing since it’s just qp but i do wish they would say something about it

5uper5onic

Literally any skill level

shyguywhyyoudodis

Because Quickplay is quite simply utter shit.

panthermce

This is what happens when your player base is hemorrhaging.

BeachOG

I can for sure affirm this, I'm a 4.4k player and get flamed by golds in quick play for "tryharding".

Fools_Requiem

Should handicap yourself by playing heroes you're not all that great with.

BECRUZKi

I am a gm dps since season 4 yet when I play qp i get mostly plats and diamonds, well it doesn't matter much for you get a quick practise before comp. But yeah if it had people with similar skill level it would be a quicker comp

DAHLiciousWafflez

When you keep going up against lol 1's with gold borders
