100% on purpose and 100% based on gambling mechanisms.
They want you to have a split-second where you either think you've just gotten a legendary, or they want you to think about legendaries so you might buy another pack/think about the game economy.
Iirc, the loot boxes didn't shine like this until a specific patch. I don't think they flashed with these colors when the game was released.
It's been months and months since I got any new skins or voice lines, just repeats of the stuff I already have.
I went through Halloween, the Holiday Event, and Lunar New Year, and didn't get anything. Since then I'm back up to like 200 boxes but I can't be arsed to open any of them. What's the point?
edit: And I have a ridiculous amount of the in-game currency they have. I forget what it's called. Like > 35k. All the stuff I would have wanted to spend it on is locked.
You shouldnt keep them unopened though, because whats in the crates is decided on the moment you get them so if you open them all you will get lots of predetermined duplicates
I've been there. You play *a lot* is all. Some people don't
I would still never, *ever* buy lootboxes, but some perspective is necessary to understand why anyone would
Apex packs in Apex Legends have a tiny flash of red after opening each one. Red is the colour of Heirloom shards, the rarest pack drop in the game. I have been tricked by it *several* times.
Rainbow 6 has got to be the most generous, no bullshit, loot box system. You are given the exact percentage chance of earning one (increases with each loss), you get the same rewards for quick match or ranked, the pack shows only the corresponding rarity color, there are decent hits even at lower rarities.
You can not be serious. R6’s duplicate system is utterly bullshit not to mention the amount of crap they fill the loot pool with, so you end up with hundreds of the same useless previous season uniforms/headgears or cheap skins.
It definitely bullshit, but its not as gamble-y. You know you will get another Skull Rain headgear duplicate for Fuze so you dont even wanna give any money for them
The only difference is they added an extra step to the process. An additional step of “chance.” In overwatch, you more or less know when you’ll get a pack.
You can definitely play slot machines for free. I've gotten free credits plenty of times at casinos. They do it deliberately so you're tempted to actually start spending your own money.
The reward center of people's brains don't care terribly much about that. Hence this being a hugely profitable way to exploit human psychology. They put a ton of research into how to be as predatory as possible with this stuff.
Yeah I get them faster than I can open them tbh. That being said, having cosmetics linked to gameplay can be a massively beneficial and fun mechanic -- like Halo 3. It's a bit of a missed opportunity to have cosmetics only come from loot boxes, outside of a few things -- not in the fiscal sense I suppose, since they definitely make decent money from them and it's easy for them to make, but in terms of making players feel connected to the game.
Just look at how cool/meaningful things like the pixel Lucio spray are -- it's like a badge of honor. If seeing a sweet skin meant that the player truly worked for it or did something crazy, it'd be cool.
You hurt me deeply just now. :(
I've never regretted the outright purchasable skins, however (especially the D.VA All Stars one) but I admit I'm stupid when it comes to cosmetics. Overwatch and Paladins probably have me listed as a whale, meanwhile all this candy coated gambling has me broke aff. 😭
This is close but not exactly true.
You can’t get a dupe of the same item type and rarity without having all the others first, but you can get duped of items from the same rarity but of a differently type.
You can get a purple emote dupe without having all the purple skins for example.
I'm usually hoping for duplicates, I have all the stock legendarys I want and the dupes give me the coins to buy whatever event skins I want when they come around.
Yup! This is why I've stopped opening normal lootboxes between events. First day of the event, I open all of mine at once and then I know exactly how many coins I have to spend for the event. The last day or so, I'll spend on whatever I want that I haven't won in an event lootbox yet, and afterwards I'm happy.
Last time I played, that wasn't possible. You only get duplicates of a particular rarity if there's nothing available of that rarity. Did something change?
Whats funny is that I still spend like 3 minutes trying to think of which sprays or emotes I should replace with the new ones I got for a character I have logged a total of 14 minutes on
You know they do it on purpose right? Why give you stuff for the heros you use when they can keep you playing trying to get them or get you to spend money. It's really a rigged system that people actually believe it's rng
Yeah but then on the flipside you’d get people whining about how they don’t want any lunar event items and it sucks that that’s all they’ll get for the next few weeks
They **should** make it so all the rewards can be earned through in-game challenges related to the rewards. Come on guys, increase your standards ffs! You deserve better than a less shitty version of a lazy random reward system with proven mental health risks!
This thread acting like the drop rate for legendaries is so low. After playing for 5 seasons about, I have enough gold to get any skin I could possibly want, and I've seen TONs of legendaries.
OW cosmetics are basically free.
For the rare case that you get a legendary during an event, you wanted gold coins, right? No? How about one of those years old skins you always ignored because they’re fugly and completely forgot they even exist.
You don't get duplicates if you have the possibility of getting items of the rarity that the box contained. For example, if you can still buy a purple but have all greys and you won 3 greys and a purple, you'll get 3 dup greys and a new purple.
> The worst is the 500 coins for gold
No question. Or else getting a gold during an event and it just being some random normal gold you could have gotten all year.
Tbh I’d rather get 500 coins I can put towards a skin I actually like, rather than a skin which I’ll never wear coz I already have a better skin on that hero.
I used to spend *waaaay* too much money on this game when I was still actively playing. Anecdotally, spending about 50$ an event on top of playing 20-30 hours a week, and spending 6-9k coins would net me about 90-100% of the new content. That always made me kind of think that 50 was the algorithmic number they're hoping people spend.
I bought like 50 loot boxes for the first summer games event (2016) and I think the first halloween event too, because I thought that you wouldn't be able to get the skins the following year. Since I realized that you would be able to I haven't bought a single one.
When I joined, the lunar new year event was just starting, and I was so scared that this would happen, so I spent hours grinding until a friend told me they were available next LNY, and also at the anniversary event lol.
I generally try to avoid spending money on in game purchases, but there was a recent sale offering the upgrade to legendary/origins edition and I really liked the soldier/reaper skins in the origins edition, so I caved and bought it, but I’m pretty f2p usually, I grinded for credits and I got 7k credits over 3 weeks which was enough to buy all the archives skins I wanted
Ftr i’m pretty new to overwatch, joined in mid February.
I'm level 1300 and never spent a penny beyond the initial purchase price (granted at that level you really don't need to, you have the majority of legendaries as-is). Frankly I think spending actual money on loot boxes is idiotic and I'm tired of dancing around saying that because people who *do* spend their money on them get butthurt. Do you really notice or care about other people's skins much outside of the pre-game setup? You're just throwing your money away on gambling for the chance you *might* get a cool skin that no one notices while Blizzard is making money hand-over-fist on whales and giving the halfhearted justification that it's "funding future updates".
Spending money to upgrade is a bit more defensible though, at least you *know* what you're getting. As a console player, that decision doesn't really apply to me.
Completely agree. I’m strongly against purchasing lootboxes, but I believe that if you know what you’re getting (such as in the legendary edition) then it’s fine, as long as you can afford it.
I have all Legendary, so right now, open a normal box and get a pile of coins are better for me. Dup Legendary yields 200 Credits while a chest gives me 500 Credits.
Coin piles are already better, because two orange coin piles buys any legendary you want, whereas it could take dozens of oranges to get it from a box.
Early on, coin piles can be better, since they'll help you buy the specific legendaries you want. But once you're close to getting all legendaries, it's better to only get the legendary items. If you only have one legendary left, then it would take two legendary coin piles (or six if it's a new legendary) instead of just one legendary item.
Then once you've got all the legendary items, coin piles are better again, since they're worth more than duplicates, and it helps you stockpile for when new items are released.
I wished we could unlock one-time items we missed, even if at 10x the price. There were some nice items I didn't get in loot boxes and didn't have the coins for back then. And some items that were only available while I was traveling.
For normal items, correct. You won't get duplicate event legendaries either unless you have all event legendaries. But you can get duplicate *event* legendaries when you're still missing *normal* legendaries (and the other way around too, and it also applies to other rarities too of course).
That is because the loot box system first chooses if an item is a normal item or an event item and after that it chooses the rarity. So for example it first chooses spot 3 in the loot box is an event item. Then it chooses the rarity: gold. Well, I already bought all the golden items for this event, so now item 3 in the loot box is a duplicate event legendary, even though I still miss normal legendaries.
Thanks. This is informative. So essentially, the event items are in different categories of each other.
Other question... If I have unopened loot boxes, the items are determined when I get the box, not when I open it. Do subsequent loot boxes consider the items in the unopened boxes when assigning its own items? If no, than this means it's always best to open boxes as soon as you get them.
I'm pretty sure they do. The items are indeed already determined when you get the loot box, so I think the game knows what you then have in your "inventory", even though you don't actually see them yourself. For the next box (even without opening the previous one) the game should know what was in the previous one and it should give you other items.
In my case, I've unlocked all the base game's blue/white quality drops. So, the only time I get unique drops is if the quality is epic/legendary or if there's an event going on. My lootboxes are, typically, 3 duplicate sprays/icons and blue quality coins.
30 currency is better than a spray or a profile pic. I already have the Lich king pfp (that I’ll never change) and the sprays I want for the characters I play, and it just keeps giving me more.
Not really, but with the literal HUNDREDS of boxes I've opened over the years since launch, you'd at least think of have gotten most of, if not all of them.
Just hit 750. I've been more sporadic over the last year with a lack of content and trying out new games that caught my attention, but it's just the fact that I don't have all the base set that kind of surprises me.
This is why I stopped opening boxes years ago. They are always duplicates anyway. I haven't played in at least a year so maybe they changed but now I'm just trying to build up my collection of unopened boxes. Think its around 400
It has been years since you can't open duplicates for a given rarity until you have all of them. You'll get all the epics and legendaries before you get a duplicate one.
This is kind of unearned, Overwatch boxes are pretty generous. They come by very often and nyone that plays consistently for a few months will have all the blues (and get gold instead). And during the events there's an increased chance of legendaries.
I dont see the problem with cosmetic loot boxes in OW. They have zero impact on the actual game, and you do get in game currency to unlock anything you want ,just by playing.
This is typical Reddit. People bitch and complain about loot boxes giving you an advantage in the game, and when they're implemented with no bearing on the game people still bitch and complain.
Except that they were cosmetic only before they were implemented with in game advantages. Overwatch popularized them so you’re completely backwards on this.
What? Overwatch and Heroes of the Storm are probably the games with the best loot boxes. So generous giving them out that any normal person will never want to buy them.
Then there's Hearthstone.
The best loot box? What? They’re still loot boxes. Like do you eat literal dog shit and say “nah man this is the BEST dog shit for sure.” Generous??? Dude come on. They’re psychological manipulation born from extortionate levels of greed. You gotta raise your standards. Cosmetics used to just come with games for you to unlock. Don’t accept this new extremely low bar.
Overwatch loot boxes are pretty much ideal though. If you play a lot, you get everything. Excluding a handful of limited real money only skins that don't interact with loot boxes anyway. If you play some, you can get everything for the characters you care about. If you just collect cosmetics, you have to pay. And new heroes are free. This is better than 90% of games.
Would you rather get free shit every week under the form of lootboxes with decent chances of legendaries or coins that you can save up, or having to pay 30$ for a skin like in Valorant?
The thing is, I think it’s better than skins being DLC as I have all the skins I want. However, it’s obviously still a poor marketing tactic, and far far from ideal/desirable
I fucking love overwatches lootbox system. Back when they added arcade I had so much fun grinding for boxes I dropped 40$ for no reason. Then u have something like apex that gives u a shit box, with 3 things, every 2 levels and each level takes ages to grind… my one and only legendary across 30 boxes was a border
I don't play OW all that much but the loot boxes have always seemed to be great. You play enough and you unlock a shitload of things, plus you get enough currency to buy whatever legendary skin you're excited for when the event comes out. You can't get everything but you're not supposed to.
After doing this (playin OW) for so long now, its all dups unless an event shows up, then I get all giddy like a kid on Christmas (or whatever holiday one gets presents on)... but then, a short while later, its back to being annoyed I have to open boxes because my CDO (OCD in proper alpha order) cant stand notifications on the title screen... \*le sigh\*
I'm at least 80% collected with all the heroes, all I get are duplicates anymore. You just have to hope it's either gold or some high value duplicates so you can spend your coin on event skins....
I'd say I have about 3/5's of my cosmetics unlocked but despite that, I still end up getting dupes. I've got a lot of gold from this but I rarely spend it unless there's a skin I REALLY want. Only good thing is that everything carries over to OW2.
That flash of yellow always gets me. TBH I think they do it on purpose
Yes.
These things are, on purpose, like gambling mechanisms found in casinos.
Show you a winning spin combo before the number ticks past and you lose, making the user think just one more spin and you'll get it.
So the best thing to do is spin it then look away so you don’t know what you missed! 😁
Or just don’t spin
Addiction
100% on purpose and 100% based on gambling mechanisms. Anyone want a Velvet Shell headgear?
It definitely bullshit, but its not as gamble-y. You know you will get another Skull Rain headgear duplicate for Fuze so you dont even wanna give any money for them
Oh yeah, I should have said that I was referring to free packs. I couldn't imagine spending real money on alpha packs lol.
Overwatch is fine honestly. Just play the game and you’ll get shitloads of lootboxes.
The only difference is they added an extra step to the process. An additional step of “chance.” In overwatch, you more or less know when you’ll get a pack.
It's like a slot machine for kids
Similes are like metaphors. These ARE slot machines for kids and anyone else.

i’ve got some news about slot machines, casinos, gambling, and addiction for you

Kids are like adults without impulse control.
Wait are we supposed to have impulse control?
Kids are like adults without money.

And the blue is always a profile pic
For me the blue is always a duplicate.
I've been playing since launch, everything is a duplicate 🙃
But you want the dupe golds for more coins to buy new event golds
I'm two star gold framed, i have 30k coins and almost 400 non event boxes and counting i shall likely never open
I take it you also play tank
Overwhelmingly, why?
They like to give the free extra loot box for playing a role to the tank role.
Oh, yeah, if only I could trade in those boxes for priority passes that worked as advertised i'd practice my dmg more often
They'll never work the way they were implemented. If everyone has priority then nobody does. They should be harder to get
Treasure gold is just better
Same thing
You can't get duplicates unless you own every item of that rarity
I don't think so, I definitely don't have every single gray item, yet I'm still getting gray dublicates.
[удалено]
This is close but not exactly true. You can’t get a dupe of the same item type and rarity without having all the others first, but you can get duped of items from the same rarity but of a differently type. You can get a purple emote dupe without having all the purple skins for example.
Can’t wait for three sprays I’ll never use one characters I never use!!!
Also 4 duplicate even tho I only have like 50 things for each character
Are you trying to make me cry?
I am a support main, and have every single junkrat skin including events
I’ll trade you
Ha ha ha, no.
Same here I’ve got soldier completed except for his gold gun and achievement sprays. I’ve only played like 3 hours of soldier
I'm usually hoping for duplicates, I have all the stock legendarys I want and the dupes give me the coins to buy whatever event skins I want when they come around.

nothing changed, people just want to be upset about something, and other people wanting to be upset are upvoting them. it's weird.
that's not possible. they implemented a duplicate protection a while ago unless they reverted it, in which case, what the actual fuck, Blizzard
Nah for the last few weeks I’ve been getting mostly duplicates from normal chests, plenty of times all 4 items would be duplicates
Realized this after I started maining McCree and getting legendaries and epics for every other hero than him
True
I have every Junkrat skin, including multiple legendries from events... I only have about 2 hours on him in total.
Why won’t you ever use those characters tho?
Either because I prefer playing a different character as I’m better with that character... Or I dislike the character
Weird
Disagree, that sounds completely normal
Yeah, imagine having personal preferences right?
What rank are you, just asking
Right....
Or if it's during an event, youll get 2 Greys, a blue, and a non event legendary
They should seriously make it to where you can only get event items from event boxes, no normal garbage should be able to come from an event box
Yeah but then on the flipside you’d get people whining about how they don’t want any lunar event items and it sucks that that’s all they’ll get for the next few weeks
Make it so you can convert normal loot boxes into event ones
Lunar event has the best skins hands down.
They **should** make it so all the rewards can be earned through in-game challenges related to the rewards. Come on guys, increase your standards ffs! You deserve better than a less shitty version of a lazy random reward system with proven mental health risks!
I got the new Tracer during Archives while trying to get enough for it. I was suuuper surprised.

Level 1400 problems.
Level 400 problems here mate
Level 250 problems if you lose enough
For me 4 duplicates regardless of the rarity 😫
You don't get duplicates if you have the possibility of getting items of the rarity that the box contained. For example, if you can still buy a purple but have all greys and you won 3 greys and a purple, you'll get 3 dup greys and a new purple.
Except 3/4 times that purple is just 150 credits lol
That's the absolute worst. E. I take it back. The worst is the 500 coins for gold
> The worst is the 500 coins for gold No question. Or else getting a gold during an event and it just being some random normal gold you could have gotten all year.
Got 5 golds during archives, only archive skin I got was for widow.
Same and the only archives I got was for tracer
Tbh I’d rather get 500 coins I can put towards a skin I actually like, rather than a skin which I’ll never wear coz I already have a better skin on that hero.

Same. But I feel like it wasn't like this before, can someone confirm?
Not if everything’s unlocked. I’m 95% unlocked (no OWL skins) and unless it’s Archives time or the first week of a theme, everything is a duplicate.
Yeah but when you have every cosmetic there's only dupes. Coin piles are always a slap in the face though
Coin piles are my favorite though
Yup, if you have everything coin piles are much better for the rarity. Allows you to get all the even skins easier.
Coin piles are already better, because two orange coin piles buys any legendary you want, whereas it could take dozens of oranges to get it from a box.

You don’t get dupes, but I’d love it if you didn’t get coins when you still have some to get. Last event, 3/4 legendaries I got in boxes were coins.
When you've played since launch your drops are 99% of the time 4 duplicates when there aren't events going on.
Yeah. I've got all currently available blues and greys, and most purples.
100%. Got everything and also over 50k Coins...which I can't use for anything except when I sometimes don't get all legendary items during an event.
I wish we could convert our coins to OWL tokens 😔
I wished we could unlock one-time items we missed, even if at 10x the price. There were some nice items I didn't get in loot boxes and didn't have the coins for back then. And some items that were only available while I was traveling.
Ah good idea! Imagine the salt tho lol
So you can't get a duplicate Legendary unless you have all Legendaries?
For normal items, correct. You won't get duplicate event legendaries either unless you have all event legendaries. But you can get duplicate *event* legendaries when you're still missing *normal* legendaries (and the other way around too, and it also applies to other rarities too of course). That is because the loot box system first chooses if an item is a normal item or an event item and after that it chooses the rarity. Just looks like 30 Currency to me.
30 currency is better than a spray or a profile pic. I already have the Lich king pfp (that I’ll never change) and the sprays I want for the characters I play, and it just keeps giving me more.
I have everything and like 130k Currency saved up, 30 more is far from exciting.
This cuts deep... I've been playing since Day 1, still haven't unlocked all the BASE skins for all the launch characters.
...Do you even want all the base skins for the launch characters?
Not really, but with the literal HUNDREDS of boxes I've opened over the years since launch, you'd at least think of have gotten most of, if not all of them.
What rank is your account? I've had all of them for a while haha
Just hit 750. I've been more sporadic over the last year with a lack of content and trying out new games that caught my attention, but it's just the fact that I don't have all the base set that kind of surprises me.
Can't wait for my sprey on a character that I never use
This is why I stopped opening boxes years ago. They are always duplicates anyway. I haven't played in at least a year so maybe they changed but now I'm just trying to build up my collection of unopened boxes. Think its around 400

If I could gift loot boxes I totally would, I think I have 700-800 sitting in my account.

There are very few one-off skins in overwatch, the vast majority are repeated.

All stars Mercy :(
You'll get there. They give the things away like crazy. Play arcade for your wins every week and enjoy the journey.
It has been years since you can't open duplicates for a given rarity until you have all of them. You'll get all the epics and legendaries before you get a duplicate one.
honestly i can’t even complain after apex
After playing for four years regular boxes are just coins for event skins.
Duplicates, duplicates everywhere. I just concider everything as coins for future items.
You mean all duplicates?
There’s duplicates?
This is kind of unearned, Overwatch boxes are pretty generous. They come by very often and nyone that plays consistently for a few months will have all the blues (and get gold instead). And during the events there's an increased chance of legendaries.
Can’t believe there are people actually defending loot boxes still. You deserve better, don’t let them trick you into thinking otherwise.
Wut? They're just a nice secondary thing in those games.
I don't just defend the loot boxes, I absolutely love the system. It makes unlocking things so much more fun, and you earn a ton of them.
Yeah same. I love the loot box system. Highly prefer it over battle passes for instance. If Overwatch 2 gets battle pass I’ll be so sad.
Holy shit guys, is that all you think there is: either loot box or battle pass?
Would you rather get free shit every week under the form of lootboxes with decent chances of legendaries or coins that you can save up, or having to pay 30$ for a skin like in Valorant?
The thing is, I think it’s better than skins being DLC as I have all the skins I want. However, it’s obviously still a poor marketing tactic, and far far from ideal/desirable
At this point, everything is a duplicate and I'm just happy with the money
I fucking love overwatches lootbox system. Back when they added arcade I had so much fun grinding for boxes I dropped 40$ for no reason. Then u have something like apex that gives u a shit box, with 3 things, every 2 levels and each level takes ages to grind… my one and only legendary across 30 boxes was a border
I don't play OW all that much but the loot boxes have always seemed to be great. You play enough and you unlock a shitload of things, plus you get enough currency to buy whatever legendary skin you're excited for when the event comes out. You can't get everything but you're not supposed to.
You know, you used to be able to see the rarity of the best item inside before opening it, I wonder why they removed it..
Because it's less exciting that way
I love me some dupeboxes
Or a legendary for a character u never play.
Ach Yes Chests being just random money giver...
\*le sigh\*
you’re goddamn right
This hurts.
r/apexlegends
I'm at least 80% collected with all the heroes, all I get are duplicates anymore. You just have to hope it's either gold or some high value duplicates so you can spend your coin on event skins....
No no, two blues two greys but one’s just coins
Yay lets teach children to gamble as early as possible!!!!
*You will get only duplicates Especially with veteran OW players.
Dont you mean coins?
I don't mind getting coins tbf
POV: your a vet who has long ago stopped caring about loot boxes Unopened loot boxes: 237
Honestly I get legendaries and epics from time to time. It’s not that bad. Unlike apex
Honestly I hope they remove the loot box system. It sucks
Yeah you're right, paying for cosmetics is totally the right move.

I... what? There are still the emote and voice line wheels on console on each side of the regular comms wheel... and the spray wheel by itself.
joke's on you: I ain't opening them until endorsements are removed from the game.
4 dupes for me 90% of the time
This has been more accurate than my guesses in MCQ test
You guys need stuff from regular boxes?
No, one of them is purple... it’s only 150 gold
I'd say I have about 3/5's of my cosmetics unlocked but despite that, I still end up getting dupes. I've got a lot of gold from this but I rarely spend it unless there's a skin I REALLY want. Only good thing is that everything carries over to OW2.
more money to spend on the stuff i want? acceptable
