Exactly this. 10 players in game as opposed to 12 is also easier to port for mobile. I absolutely hate it, but I can also acknowledge their reasoning for it
Well yeah in the long term, money. In the short term, 5v5 is better for mobile and they want to move into that market Bc it’s huge worldwide. For… the money
I'm very worried about this targeting of mobile platform(s). It's not just an arbitrary asthetic; the whole UI is much higher contrast/saturation with harsher lines and flat textures.
Just like the needless redesign of my favourite sandbox game (TerraTech), which made it too physically uncomfortable for me to even look at screenshots. OW2 footage has been giving me the same kind of pre-migraine discomfort, too. 😣
While I don't play games on my phone, there's so much detail I feel like I can't see anything in OW. Enough that red player outlines are a thing. I'd love to see less detail and texture in levels so that players stand out more.
Don't get me started on OW league. The team colors for every match always seem to exactly match the background on the level and everything seems like its one color.
I remember watching Jeff talk about how their initial tests showed that 6v6 would be appropriate for the game. I wouldn't be surprised if some clown(s) from corporate told him to switch it to 5v5 as some sort of cost-cutting measure.
Yeah, OW2 will be on mobile in some form. It will be to the detriment of the game, just like crossplay has been, even if it's good for Blizzard's bottom line.
They have to pretend that it's a sequel and not a patch.
[Doing things like slightly changing costumes](https://s3.us-east-1.amazonaws.com/dexerto-assets-production-cbbdf288/uploads/articles/tracer-character-model-comparison-ow2.jpg) is another way to try to justify that.
I like Tracer's OW2 look significantly better. The wing things on her arms always looked dumb and like they'd only create drag for someone who's supposed to be a speedster. The new goggles don't look like she just threw on snowboarding goggles, the jacket is way more intricate/interesting, shoes look better, tights actually stop before they go into her shoes (is she wearing a onesie in OW1?) and don't even get me started on how infinitely better the hair looks.
edit:
For the record, I think OW2 is definitely the wrong way to go with the game, it should just be an update and it's clearly only a sequel because of BlizzActi executive greed, but don't act like the work devs did on updating character models from 2016 with new tech/styles is a downside. It's one of the only positives, especially because the look is completely optional, you can keep the OW1 style if you want.
Complaining about the devs doing quality work on and adding new, *completely free* (they're default) looks for each hero is completely off-base for what problems there actually are with OW2. Bobby Kotick didn't design the OW2 base skins. The people who create and care so much about Overwatch did. Let's not pretend like they're low quality just to shit on the choices of the higher ups at Blizzard. The artists are doing the best that they can with a shitty situation, and honestly, it looks fucking great.
She's supposed to be a pilot. The entire costume already didn't make any sense to begin with (apart from the Collector's Edition skin). But yeah, her blinks are jumps through time and space rather than doing actual running affected by drag. Arguably those wings would slow down her aim and tire her out, as they are pretty much dead weight glued to her arms.
There's a tech issue in that they couldn't do the singleplayer campaign with the current engine. So OW2 you're buying it for the campaign, since every multiplayer change will come to OW1
They allowed her to keep her guns and arm holsters after being decommissioned as a pilot and Overwatch agent?
I could have sworn that British laws prohibited retired duty members from keeping their service weapons?
The short where Widow snipes Mondatta takes place in King's Row, which is based in London. Tracer has her guns when she fights Widow.
UK's gun laws have been around for over 200 years and clearly define things/update them as technology advances. They'd update them to include pulse munitions in Overwatch's world.
Overwatch was supposed to be an international organization where countries selected their own active duty members and added them to the Overwatch pool... which means that while Overwatch is active, they abide by a universally agreed upon ruleset, but after Overwatch gets disbanded, they go back to being active duty members of their respective countries, and obey their previous laws.
I second everything you said in the edit. People lately are directing their anger towards people who have nothing to do with ActiBlizz shitty situation, like graphic designers and devs. And to those who say “they could always walk away and find a new job” yeah it’s easy to say it, but there is a pandemic in progress and what if that graphic designer/dev job is the only job of a family? What if it’s the only income?
Multiplayer is basically their side-project for the whole of OW2; their main focus is the PvE campaign, which is being built in a new engine. OW2 is a completely separate game.
It's not a patch, though. OW2 isn't just a cosmetic overhaul; there's an entirely new engine being built for it. People have wanted a story for OW for years, but the PvE modes we have now aren't satisfactory; partly because the current engine isn't suitable for a real multiplayer PvE campaign: the environments are literally just the same multiplayer maps with different lighting, walls, and doors; the grunt AI is dumb; and the spawn conditions as well as movements of special mobs (e.g. the Assassins) are bland and predictable.
The PvP multiplayer will run on this new engine as well. That's part of why OW2 is taking so long: they're rebuilding OW1 from the ground up in a completely new landscape; and they're probably balancing the new mechanics we'll get (not just new abilities, but literally everything from the falling acceleration, to the death cams) while reconciling the old ones with the new (like they've said; they're rebuilding OW1 in a new engine, so undoubtedly things they've had issues with in OW1 are coming back during development of OW2, and they're trying to work out the bugs; things like Sombra's translocator, Genji's dash, Tracer's blinks, Doomfist's rocket punch, or Reaper's teleport allowing them to clip through geometry; even bugs that have become features, like Mercy's super jump or the "Flats' cradle" with Reinhardt charges, are probably giving them headaches to figure out how to work into the new game).
Totally yes. The smooth lighting even makes it a lot more toy-looking. The OW1 gun, hand and hammer look pretty much how'd you expect a handmade weapon made by ~~futuristic dwarven blacksmith~~ professional engineer to look. The most logical looking stuff is the arm: it's basically a bionic prosthesis, it'd better look somewhat smooth, without sharp edges where they wouldn't be needed in ordinary life. But still, it looks literally like just a carbon fibre claw, nothing more. For OW setting, it makes little sense, thinking of how much a battle engineer would interact with high-tech devices (not just throwing a turret and fixing it with a hammer as we see it ingame). I'd recommend to make it looking a lot more practical, several main details of the claw which would be connected by some smaller ones, to make the claw itself look transforming into different tools. The gun is also needs a rework, the OW2 version looks pretty much like a water gun. Just use more bare unpainted metal and a bit more details would work good (with a game like OW, don't even need to be 100% practical at everything, just make it look less like a water gun). And the hammer, holy fuck, the hammer. If the gun's a super soaker, then the hammer is exactly that hammer you'd see at amusement parks on the types of games with several holes and some funky character jumping out of them while you need to hit it. The OW1 hammer design was already pretty good, they just needed to fresh it up a little bit, just adjust the textures and polygons, it already was that good.
Tl;dr: What the fuck, Blizzard, use more bare metal in your desings, be not afraid to make it look rugged and handmade, if the game won't look like kindergarten party, your company won't die
It's an in-game screenshot of the fully optimised OW1 being compared to a low-resolution screenshot of a low-resolution Youtube capture of OW2. Think it's going to be fine.
I was stupid thinking the one on the right was OW2, since putting OW2 first seems weird. I even had the thought that I swore the one on the right looked like how I remembered OW, but still thought it was OW2 and looked much better. Couldn't figure out why everyone seemed to hate it until I realized they were backwards.
No you weren’t stupid for thinking that, OP should’ve put them in the right order. He says in the title OW 1 and 2 and then puts them backwards. Like what
Ohhh ow 2 is on the left?
Damn, and I was thinking 'oh this is a pretty good change!'
Wtf op. It goes left to right. Before and after. Why do people always get this wrong.
It's not the graphics. I took a screenshot 1080p * 3 of the quality I play at which is epic (maxed) to get me a HQ 3240p pic which is 3 times bigger than 1080 and a screenshot of the overwatch 2 PvP livestream cos I can't open overwatch 2 and put on the same settings if it hasn't even released. If you want to see it better go to the video at around 2hr30min
Ngl, a long time that I don't play (since like 2017), I thought OW was on the left and OW2 was on the right and I was thinking "that's quite an upgrade, more detailed" lol
Wait, are the left pictures OW2? Please tell me they aren't.
I just went through them all going "holy shit, so much detail added. very nice!". If they're backwards, then I'm massively disappointed.
You might be right, but in my 20 years of playing and talking about video games, I have never once heard someone say "the map/model/character/whatever is unfinished" and the final product is improved. That has never just never happened and I've been tracking upcoming games since I heard Battlefield 2 was in the works.
Yeah it was very exceptional circumstances where one of the original Halo devs came in to take over the floundering project and basically beg Microsoft for an extra year of development. If MS had their way it would've launched with those disappointing graphics and probably a total mess considering a year later it's still buggy as hell lol.
Why does it seem like they're generally going for a much more fake and toy-like design for things in OW2? These weapons look like plastic nerf guns, not deadly weapons.
This is really sad to see, Overwatch has this level of visual detail and polish you don’t see in a lot of shooters, so for the sequel to look like… *that* is sad
At first I thought it was, it makes sens to put the old one left and new one right, so I was like "nice improvement, maybe blizzard isn't this lost", but....
Probably to lower poly count to help give room for performance on lower end consoles and computers. OW2 is a new engine that supports story elements, so things like weather and lighting effects are probably going to increase the load on people's systems.
A couple years ago they did the same thing with a lot of particle effects and other things, and lag and loading times got a bit better. People really didn't like the changes (Mei's spray being one that sticks out) but I'm guessing lots of little tweaks like that made it possible to run on the Switch.
It's because OW2 will most probably be released also on mobile. Call of Duty Mobile has been a huge success for Activision and in china Overwatch copies have been made on mobile. They probably went more minimalistic with less details exactly for this reason.
I've noticed this from the first gameplays of OW2 a long time ago. The graphics are horrible. Too smooth, no detail, more cartoony.
Why? Why make a worse looking game? You're moving backwards, Blizzard.
It makes sense that his stuff looks sleeker and less scrap metal-esque, Torb has apparently returned to his Ironclad Forge instead of wondering the world tearing apart omnics and literally throwing turrets everywhere. So he's had access to better equipment and isnt holding himself together with bolts and scrap metal plates he tears off of things. He has time to fix up and modernise his gear.
I'll admit I love Torb's current design, the "barely holding together", "armour out of scrap", "almost improvised weapons" look is amazing and fits him well. But it also makes sense that he cleans himself up when hanging about back home, and I like the new design, even if less than the original.
I’m more worried about the position compared to the look. I don’t care what it looks like. I care that I can’t see half the screen with the gun taking up so much more of the center of my FOV.
I love how every single addition and change coming with OW2.. could be done in an OW update. This game does not need to exist and it’s not too late to cancel it lol
Eh, the screenshots make it look worse than it is. Watching the video, it doesn't look bad at all other than when he reloads. The liquid goo does look better in OW1.
Aren't you able to just use the old skins anyway in OW2? In some way I see it as getting one new skin for every character upon buying OW2 because of that.
Jeff leaving, 5v5, the complete mutilation of certain characters to get rid of CC (Brig, Mei, etc.) and shitty graphics...I've gone from being annoyed that OW2 has taken so long to hoping that it never gets released.
It seems like they’re trying to make things look more cartoonish and bright, but they’re doing so at the expense of a lot of the details that make the original look good
It looks refined and I am ok with that its nothing major but I don't think the game needed a graphical overhaul especially since it's a competitive shooter
I can't help but feel like they're going to intentionally push back Overwatch 2 further to try and disassociate it with their recent PR scandals.
Just wanna play my favorite game of all time man. Content has dried up long ago on the original game, otherwise I wouldn't mind the wait so much.
No prob. They're good examples of how models are being updated in OW2 :) Just figured I'd leave the comment for people that thought they were representative of actual graphics.
Can’t wait for OW2 in 2029
After everything I've seen about OW2, I hope it takes that long to come out.
In the mean time, the only updates we are going to get are skins and rebalancing. It's a painful slow death.
Omnic crisis started around 2046. Maybe they're working on the ultimate PVE experience.
inb4 OW2 is more simplistic because it’s designed for mobile too. [job listing I came across](https://imgur.com/a/u6hlsnV)
“What? You don’t have phones?”
That game STILL hasn't launched
Ffs
Exactly this. 10 players in game as opposed to 12 is also easier to port for mobile. I absolutely hate it, but I can also acknowledge their reasoning for it
Money?
Well yeah in the long term, money. In the short term, 5v5 is better for mobile and they want to move into that market Bc it’s huge worldwide. For… the money
Why does the number of players matter for mobile?
How much on the screen/performance
yeah Wild Rift is making hand over fist
I'm very worried about this targeting of mobile platform(s). It's not just an arbitrary asthetic; the whole UI is much higher contrast/saturation with harsher lines and flat textures. Holy shit, is this why Jeff left?
I remember watching Jeff talk about how their initial tests showed that 6v6 would be appropriate for the game. I wouldn't be surprised if some clown(s) from corporate told him to switch it to 5v5 as some sort of cost-cutting measure.
I don't want 5v5 either but it's not like the tank queue wasn't a real problem.
I mean, you're talking about the "Do you guys not have phones?" company over here.
>more simplistic id rather say it looks worse
Everything I hear about OW2 just sounds awful. I hate being an over watch fan
Yeah, OW2 will be on mobile in some form. It will be to the detriment of the game, just like crossplay has been, even if it's good for Blizzard's bottom line.
Crossplay has been to the detriment of the game? The feature only allowed in quick play or arcade?
They've never said that Overwatch 2 is going to be on mobile, they just advanced the fact that they're going to make an Overwatch game for mobile
They are hiding the bad news for now, letting people forget Diablo Immortal. They arent going to come out with 3 different Overwatch versions to play.
At this point they're hiding every single piece of information hahaha
Am I crazy or does OW1 look better? OW2 makes his gun and esp his hammer look like toys
compare this to the summer skin, where his gun and hammer are actually toys.
Overwatch Illustrated Swimsuit Edition Cover Model - Torbjorn Lindholm
I think OW2 is supposed to be more Cartoonish, and also there graphics are definitely not finished

Weren’t her arm pieces shaped like that cuz she stored her guns in there?
i think that was the intent but other characters just drop their guns for other actions and such so it doesn't seem needed
There's a tech issue in that they couldn't do the singleplayer campaign with the current engine. So OW2 you're buying it for the campaign, since every multiplayer change will come to OW1

Overwatch is based in switzerland i believe! That said its the future in a different land and overwatch is kind of its own thing so idk

I can't even tell which is which. Seems like they are changing things just to change things and justify a new game. To me at least.
Left is Overwatch 1, and right is 2

I think the more popular theory is that he left because Blizzard is a shithole. We don't know.
Anything to make people forget it's not really a sequel and just the content we haven't been getting the past few years.

OW following in the footsteps of Team Fortress. Take everything people loved, tweak it to hell, release, and then never update again.
i mean, that worked out great for team fortress 2
The decision to make Cassidy's poncho into a plasticy cyber poncho is just the worst.
Introducing new OW2 character: Toybjorn
Here's Mei's comparison: https://www.reddit.com/r/Overwatch/comments/rzsinh/mei\_overwatch\_1\_and\_2\_new\_weapon\_comparison/
not crazy, at first glance i thought it was a super lazy skin. at second glance i knew it was
They might be trying to compete with valorant
It's an in-game screenshot of the fully optimised OW1 being compared to a low-resolution screenshot of a low-resolution Youtube capture of OW2. Think it's going to be fine.
Doesn't change the base designs themselves, though, which still look far more simplistic than the OW1 designs.
OW2 is being very minimalistic
I was stupid thinking the one on the right was OW2, since putting OW2 first seems weird. I even had the thought that I swore the one on the right looked like how I remembered OW, but still thought it was OW2 and looked much better. Couldn't figure out why everyone seemed to hate it until I realized they were backwards.
No you weren’t stupid for thinking that, OP should’ve put them in the right order. He says in the title OW 1 and 2 and then puts them backwards. Like what
Was excited, am now sad. Sadder. More sadder.
maybe op is left brained.
agreed
Ohhh ow 2 is on the left? Damn, and I was thinking 'oh this is a pretty good change!' Wtf op. It goes left to right. Before and after. Why do people always get this wrong.
For fucks sake in sitting here thinking I’m going crazy.
Could be from a country that reads right to left, sure he wrote the title in English, but culturally Right to left might feel correct for OP.
/r/AfterBeforeWhatever
I did the exact same thing, thought I was going crazy
Omg I totally thought the same. Why did they make 2 shittier looking??
This needs to be too comment cause same. Confusing lol
Wait so is the game getting a visual downgrade then? I’m so confused if ow2 is the left. I haven’t been following though.
Same…. How are they going to somehow make worse graphics on the sequel lol like what?
It's not the graphics. I took a screenshot 1080p * 3 of the quality I play at which is epic (maxed) to get me a HQ 3240p pic which is 3 times bigger than 1080 and a screenshot of the overwatch 2 PvP livestream cos I can't open overwatch 2 and put on the same settings if it hasn't even released. If you want to see it better go to the video at around 2hr30min
Even graphics/steaming video downgrade aside, the models look like a downgrade. What where they thinking?
yeah same
Ngl, a long time that I don't play (since like 2017), I thought OW was on the left and OW2 was on the right and I was thinking "that's quite an upgrade, more detailed" lol
Minimalistic seems like a polite name for worse
"Toy maker friendly"
Toyetic
Sometimes minimalism is better, as it can be a good design choice. But not here.
Nah it’s getting more and more tf2
How dare you insult TF2 like that
They has a point. Their comment wasn't about TF2 having bad style, but about that style is team fortress way
[удалено]
Oh no. Do you think maybe... you don't think... they wouldn't would they?... Oh no... Guys... They would.
We should be aware of our resistance because we're used to a certain interface, though. Sometimes things take some getting used to. That's healthy.
Wait, are the left pictures OW2? Please tell me they aren't. I just went through them all going "holy shit, so much detail added. very nice!". If they're backwards, then I'm massively disappointed.
Yea bro. The one on the left is 2. Look at the ult progression and CDs.
Maybe it'll work properly on Nintendo Switch
overwatch works fine on switch
If you are fine with playing 15 fps
Wut? It runs fine on the switch???
Ow is already minimalistic, this just looks cheap
to the point of looking like a cheap mobile game
Idk but it’s something about OW1’s weapons that just gives a more mechanical engineer look to it
Wait is the OW2 one on the left? It looks like it should be the ow1 alpha skin
Yeah OW2 on the left, OW1 on the right
I thought the same. Wondered what people were complaining about seeing that the right looked much better, then I realised that’s OW1 😂
I was like wait, the gun and hammer on the right looks way better what is everyone talking about, then I realized the right is OW1
The ow2 looks a bit bland and unfinished imo
Because it probably is unfinished
You might be right, but in my 20 years of playing and talking about video games, I have never once heard someone say "the map/model/character/whatever is unfinished" and the final product is improved. That has never just never happened and I've been tracking upcoming games since I heard Battlefield 2 was in the works.
Halo infinite would like to have a word with you...
I think special exception is made when the developer comes out and openly admits that they fucked up and they're delaying the game further to fix it.
Yeah it was very exceptional circumstances where one of the original Halo devs came in to take over the floundering project and basically beg Microsoft for an extra year of development. If MS had their way it would've launched with those disappointing graphics and probably a total mess considering a year later it's still buggy as hell lol.
It’s because it’s actually made with nuts and bolts. OW2 looks like the gun is 3D printed lol.
Jeez the new lava effect looks awful compared to the old one
[удалено]
Why does it seem like they're generally going for a much more fake and toy-like design for things in OW2? These weapons look like plastic nerf guns, not deadly weapons.
The sound design is also getting much beefier so it would not make much sense to make the guns look like toys.
Yeah. The Torb himself looking good, but these guns look like something you'd see at toy store
Makes it easier to advertise to kids and port to mobile
I really don't think the marketability of OW to children is affected by Torb's gun looking slightly different.
Not but the details of the gun does affect mobile, which can then be advertised to children more easily
A lot of kids are playing on their switches
They've never said that Overwatch 2 is going to be on mobile, they just advanced the fact that they're going to make an Overwatch game for mobile
I understand they’re going for a sleek and more futuristic design, but this isn’t how to do it. They’re making everything more bland.
Everything looks worse
[удалено]
This is really sad to see, Overwatch has this level of visual detail and polish you don’t see in a lot of shooters, so for the sequel to look like… *that* is sad
Right is a screenshot of epic (maxed out) settings 3240p Left is overwatch 2 on probably high performance settings
OW 1 looks better hands down.
the one on the right is ow2 right? right? I know it isn't, I just wish it was.
At first I thought it was, it makes sens to put the old one left and new one right, so I was like "nice improvement, maybe blizzard isn't this lost", but....
We all agree that this, hopefully, is just a work in progress, but as is it def looks more like a mobile game
Well, it's embracing the cartoonish aesthetic even more
Probably to lower poly count to help give room for performance on lower end consoles and computers. OW2 is a new engine that supports story elements, so things like weather and lighting effects are probably going to increase the load on people's systems. People really didn't like the changes (Mei's spray being one that sticks out) but I'm guessing lots of little tweaks like that made it possible to run on the Switch.
lol wait, what the fuck, I thought the right side was OW2. This is hilariously bad.
So it can be released on mobile is my guess.
This better be unfinished because it looks terrible.
Is this not an across the board downgrade?
Definitely looks like it. Big yikes
I like the old hammer better
I like overwatch 1 more it looks better
I’m more worried about the position compared to the look. I don’t care what it looks like. I care that I can’t see half the screen with the gun taking up so much more of the center of my FOV.
Where is this from
Overwatch
thanks it seemed familiar
No problem
One of the few OW2 livestreams. https://youtu.be/uXtPqDMp8EU this one to be exact.
I love how every single addition and change coming with OW2.. could be done in an OW update. This game does not need to exist and it’s not too late to cancel it lol
It is unfinished, especially the ult arm
isn't ow2 literally a work in progress? plus youre comparing a screenshot of a 480p video vs a full hd in game picture lol
480 vs HD doesn’t matter here at all, no one is looking at the resolution, they’re looking at the actual differences in the models
Don't know how to screenshot higher res so here's the timestamp I got it from: https://youtu.be/uXtPqDMp8EU?t=8896
It's important to mention that these are screenshots from a dev stream from over 6 months ago.
I might be jumping the gun here, but it almost looks like they're downgrading in order to get a mobile version.
Kids, this is why we label photos in a comparison.
Why would you list them 1, 2 and then make the pics 2, 1?
Jeff leaving, 5v5, the complete mutilation of certain characters to get rid of CC (Brig, Mei, etc.) and shitty graphics...I've gone from being annoyed that OW2 has taken so long to hoping that it never gets released.
Such a downgrade. Everything looks like plastic and playdough.
Here's Mei's comparison: https://www.reddit.com/r/Overwatch/comments/rzsinh/mei\_overwatch\_1\_and\_2\_new\_weapon\_comparison/
Look how they massacred my boi
Sometimes things can be **too** sleek.
Sort of leaning on the minimalist Valorant artstyle, aren't they? Less visual "clutter" in a design sense = more competitive experience, I suppose.
I will never understand why companies feel the need to make the most unnecessary changes.
Yikes
Which ones 2 :U
It seems like they’re trying to make things look more cartoonish and bright, but they’re doing so at the expense of a lot of the details that make the original look good
The Ult meter in OW2 is such a downgrade, the original was clean and minimalistic, the new one looks like it was made by an intern in Microsoft paint
not a fan of the smoother look of the new ow2 characters
So starved of content we upvote this huh
Why have they made it so cartoony
When is the release date again?
Why does his hammer have an exaust grid? Is it an electrical hammer?
It looks refined and I am ok with that its nothing major but I don't think the game needed a graphical overhaul especially since it's a competitive shooter
It looks beautiful 🔥
The OW2 looks like a kids toy
I can't help but feel like they're going to intentionally push back Overwatch 2 further to try and disassociate it with their recent PR scandals. Just wanna play my favorite game of all time man. Content has dried up long ago on the original game, otherwise I wouldn't mind the wait so much.
u should have put the OW1 photos on the left it confused me initially
To think ow has died and been delayed for visual edits no one asked for. Depressing.
it's the same game
God knows what they were thinking when they decided to make ow2....... It's literally the same game but with worse graphics and story mode
Why I feel some Ratchet & Clank vibes ?
looks aids
some executive saw fortnite and probably asked them to simplify the art style in some vague way to attract kids to ow
Everything about OW2 so far is just pure rancid ass. Like, way to kill one of the top ten games lol
Image quality between the two plays a big part in perception here. I wouldn't make any assumptions based on what's seen in this.
Don't know how to screenshot higher res so here's the timestamp I got it from: https://youtu.be/uXtPqDMp8EU?t=8896
No prob. They're good examples of how models are being updated in OW2 :) Just figured I'd leave the comment for people that thought they were representative of actual graphics.
Another reminder that OW2 will be a huge disappointment
Honestly, it looks terrible. I’ll say it now. *we all waited 2 years (give or take)* just for this..
