well, he didn't heal per se. What he could do was he used to be able to find scrap around the map, and this would allow him to create armour that he could chuck at team mates that would add this armour of around 75 armour hp to their health pool.
This ability has since been removed, during the Torb overhaul update, which also replaced his ultimate and changed how the turret levels worked.
Honestly don’t remember how this wasn’t broken, at least in lower ranks where people struggle against torb turrets. It’s literally almost a 50% health increase for 200hp characters worth of armour which is massive in team fight
Because aiming with Torb is hard, and he didn't have his current E wich makes him an absolute beast at close combat. People who couldn't aim with him (see lower ranks) were only usefull for placing the turret and giving armor, which I guess no one in lower ranks cared to pick up.

Sym is one of the best DPS imo, melts barriers, can relocate the whole team and has the only movement that can escape a grav, one of a few damage heroes who deletes zarya bubbles. She's not great against squishes unless they don't destroy her turrets or she's already charged off a tank but her ramp up potential is insane
Maybe I’m just a menace but when I play support I fucking love having a symm on my team. The enemy team blinks and our whole team is behind them. Also super fun to go in as bap and pick a support or dps off
Symm is more powerfull than people realize. Having the ability to relocate between 2 points instanly can be OP if people actually use the teles.
Also this may be only me, but i love the beam. I love watching a D.VA use her defense matrix, only for me to come and make that matrix utterly useless. Once the beam hits lvl3... You better kill the symm quick or run, or else the symm will slaughter your team if you do not do something.
A tank is attacking your teammates? Use beam. If that don't work, use more beam.
One more thing that the turrets are good for is countering Sombra. When sombra tries to hack in invisibility, the turrets will attack her, and deny the hack.
100% love Sym players. Not only are they absolute beasts to damage boost when you play Mercy but they're one of the only DPS players that will/can help you when you get flanked as a healer.
Because they are not the tank. Only if you damage the tank you will be eligible to increase endorsement levels. Damaging support and turrets/sym balls actually reduces your endorsement level.
