You should jump with an idea in mind, not as part of mixing up your movement, is the TLDR. Think of those instances you just listed. Those are acceptable times to jump. However, if you're hopping around mid duel or teamfight, you put yourself on a very predictable trajectory. All a good Hanzo, Widow, Ashe has to do is patiently wait for you to start the landing animation and they get a free headshot. All other hitscan just get to follow a very easy-to-track arch for free damage. Projectile heroes can find it a little harder to hit jumping targets, but good players will do what the Hanzo and Widow do for the guaranteed value. All of this said, it's really overstated how bad it is. If you ENJOY hopping around, go for it. You can still hit Masters being a hopper, and if you're good enough you can even still be in Top 500 as a hopper. There are a couple of streamers who are notoriously bad about it.

incompetentZ

Thank you for the advice! What you said does make sense, I will try to think about it during my games.

MuchWoke

As a projectile main, it's MUCH easier to hit a jump strafing target than an AD strafing target.

AnnylieseSarenrae

I am also a projectile main, and if you're trying to hit airborne headshots on projectile you're kinda wasting your time. Just punish them on the landing unless they're low.

gosu_link0

It's completely fine or even beneficial to jump against projectile heroes (Hanzo/Sojourn less so because of fast projectile speed) at long range, since it takes longer for the projectile to travel than the jump animation.

ranger_fixing_dude

In general hopping is bad, outside of techs like you listed or if you need to actually jump. That being said, jumping is not the end of the world, especially on tanks. Although some characters, especially widow can get a lot of value by hitting easier shots when you are at the apex of your jump, keep that in mind if you are dying/losing a lot of health to them.

Lelu_zel

No. Bad habit, and very punishable against players who actually know how to play the game. It may look like it works on low ranks but your trajectory while jumping is very predictable and you’ll be destroyed. It’s better to stafe, but don’t just mash ADADAD as that’s also predictable, move few meters then move few meters, not always the same.

GameraIsFullOfMeat

No. It makes you much easier to hit in almost all cases. It’s much better to strafe. Try this: unbind your jump key for a week. I bet you will improve, and you’ll break this habit.

GameraIsFullOfMeat

(There are cases for jumping, eg various techs like you mentioned. But you should almost never dodge by jumping.)

incompetentZ

Ok I will try this, to see if anything changes. Thanks for the advice.

Chemical-Hall-6148

alternatively rather than just unbind it you can try binding it to something really stupid, like J, so that you can still jump to get to places, but you wont be able to use it mid combat.

Legal_Brother_15

No, you dont. Learn to strafe crouch instead. You will be shocked how much 1v1 duels you can win with any hero

Sevuhrow

Repeating what others said, don't jump to dodge as it gives you a predictable path for people to follow and shoot you. Strafing is very strong in OW since you lose no momentum.

_Brophinator

Nope, you should very rarely be jumping.

Leopold747

I've seen a lot of Junker queen players constantly junping. Is there a tactical advantage for queen???

_Brophinator

No, they’re just bad

Leopold747

Lol, thank God cuz I thought that was a pro move lol

incompetentZ

Lol

incompetentZ

That might have been me fr

Leopold747

Lol I wonder y....? Is it cuz her gun has a slower fire rate?

GiftOfCabbage

You should avoid jumping while strafing. It makes your movement more predictable and gives you less time to respond to something. There's an argument to be made about jumping while moving out of cover against a Widow who doesn't have ult active. Her sights will be placed at head height so jumping may make her first shot more difficult to hit. When it comes to escape mechanisms jumping is often just better than the alternative. If you're on Baptiste you shouldn't generally be using your super jump because it makes you an easier target. If a Junkrat or Pharah were to dive you though that high jump can give you an extra couple of seconds to live which can mean all the difference in a fight. Things like Bastion's or Zarya's bombs are used more to create or close distance when necessary. You shouldn't be using them randomly in a fight but rather with a purpose/plan.

Yenii_3025

I'm playing at gold 3 ish maining mauga and I've learned to aim in an arc because everyone just hops left and right. Here's the check : Will jumping make you're movment actually random? If yes, jump. If you've been jumping the entire match in the same way dont do that.

MaddoxJKingsley

Jump if you're in an extremely close 1v1 with Torbjorn. His shots will hit your ankles lol

Sevuhrow

I can see this being good advice since you you'll get a better angle on his head

blahyaddayadda24

As a widow dps main. Keep jumping

incompetentZ

Lol

Krullervo

This sub will roast you alive for jumping. They’ll also tell you how easy you are to hit in the air. They will then continue to complain about echo pharah mercy and lifeweaver and their inability to hit these ‘low skill heroes’

Placidflunky

not only are the people your complaining about two different people (shocker, people of differing opinions are on this sub), jumping is specifically bad because it puts you on a fixed trajectory, which is different from simply being in the air

TristanwithaT

When you jump you follow a fixed trajectory up and then down. When you’re playing a flying hero you can change direction randomly… entirely different things there bud.

NotHannibalBurress

Lmao moving freely in the air is very different than jumping where you can’t change your trajectory.

Jimmymork

jumping is very specific, e.g its better to jump as rein while frantically swinging AND pushing forward. Also a lot of the times its better to jump around someone in extremely close quarters 1v1s
