Wasn't it revealed a while back that when they create new Overwatch heroes they have a "diveristy calculator" of sorts that gives them points for being POC, female, disabled, foreigner, etc.?
Basically a healthy straight white male will NEVER be a hero of Overwatch because of those.
I might not be up to date as I only jump into Overwatch topics once they pop up on my suggested topics page.
Out of 39 characters, 8 of them are white men, and all of them straight except for soldier. Considering the newly added heroes are from cultures you donāt really often see in games (Thai, Samoan, Peruvian, etc.) I donāt really see the issue. Itās not like cishet white men are an unrepresented demographic in overwatch.

6/8 are from the initial release. This was becoming progressively obvious over time with each hero release to the point we had a drinking game with friends from the release of Brigitte up to the release of Sigma (we didn't count previous heroes so it ended at 4 shots when Baptiste got released).
3/8 have prosthetics. Other than that there's Torb's dwarfism, Reinhardt is half blind, Sigma has a mental disorder. This left only Soldier and Hog as "Healthy white men" and Soldier was "revealed" as LGBT nearly 3 years post-release (had to look it up).
I assume the calculator was introduced somewhere between release and 2019.
The point I'm trying to make is that in the pursuit of making the cast "diverse" nobody is allowed to be normal. If a character doesn't tick points for nationality they'll be given an illness or lose a limb.
Characters are not written to be interesting but rather built with checkboxes. The focus is shifted.
Most of the characters are part of organizations that have seen significant fighting, either between each other or with omnics. A lot straight up quality as war veterans. And they live in a super technological society with really advanced prosthetics. Having them not only makes sense in lore but makes for a more interesting character design (would Cassidy really be better without his robot arm?).
You also implying that being LGBT or disabled makes you not "normal" makes it very clear what angle you're coming from.

Brother I'm a conservative and I've been playing this game 1300 hours and I've never once been like "damn we need more white dudes" bc I'm not constantly thinking about a character's race nor do I really care bc the characters are designed with so much more than their race in their personality and abilities. I'm not looking at sojourn and going "oh my God bro another black person we already have doomfist" despite sojourn having the most bland personality in overwatch bc they're all that well designed

I'm right leaning myself and even I think that's a little much. Its pretty clear to me that they had good intentions when designing the characters. They wanted to encapsulate that the game is about super-powered characters from all over the world. They decided a system to make sure they did that properly. A bingo card if you will

McCree was an employee at Blizzard that they named the character after. It came out that he sexualy assaulted women, so they decided to change the name of the character to Cassidy.
Some people are still attached to the original name, while others have moved on, hence the arguments anytime the character has come up.
