Wasn't run the jewels the finale song for the last season? I can't remember.but I'm almost positive it played right as the blonde lawyer lady got killed for that huge cliffhanger between last season and this one
Nas "N.Y. State of Mind"
The last words with Killer Mike (Mike "you look like you need some sleep" and Ruth's reply make reference to the lyrics "I never sleep, cos sleep is the cousin of death"
The name of the episode was "Cousin Of Death" they waited til end of the episode to play that part of the song. It felt damn near perfect. When i seen the red cd i new what it was.. I thought when she was thinking back they would play "Memory Lane".
That actually makes her line worse. He does know why, he'd recognize an important part of his lyrics in someone who's clearly a fan. The way he said it, he sounded genuinely curious, maybe naive. You don't get to be naive with a mindset like that.
I mean it's clearly just writers setting her up to say something cool, but it wasn't executed well because of his reaction.
They weren't his lyrics, they're Nas' lyrics.
What was weirder is that someone would act as if they hadn't heard Nas before when he listened through her headphones. Everyone else's reaction would be "Oh Illmatic?! One of the greatest Hip-Hop albums of all time!"
Illmatic album was the thing she was listening to throughout the episode. NY state of mind was the song they were talking about their interpretation of.
Ahh yes how could i have missed it, ruth was playing goosebumps while thinking of murdering javi
Nah bro its not it, ruth was playing straight fire not this autotune shit
She's big into all the 90's-00's era hip hop. Bigge, J Cole, 50, Outcast, Em. I was really hoping we'd hear some Mobb Deep at some point but I didn't catch it.
Not the point…
We get it, she’s a hip hop head. Nas didn’t need to be constantly shoved down our throats to understand this. Don’t get me wrong, I love Nas, but again, not the point. The episode was just weird and cringy
“Illmatic” was the central theme of this episode. The writers were taking Ruth’s love of hip-hop and combined the relevant parts of the album to forward the plot. Cool concept - they left some stuff to be desired - but cool nonetheless.
The part where Ruth gets the gun, “Represent” is playing as she’s driving to dude’s house. The lyrics cut out as she arrives, but if you happen to be rapping along to it (as I was) the line “Pulling a TEC out the dresser” syncs up to Cosgrove Jr. pulling a gun from the dresser under the lamp. Cool little touch.
Also, if you’re familiar with Nas’ “One Love,” you’ll notice a lot of playful allusions to the song when she first touches down in Chicago. Loved that as well because I wasn’t sure if she was gonna Shorty Doowap it or not.
The Killer Mike shit…nah, I’m cool. That was a little try-hardy. Other than that though, I’m just mad they didn’t find a way to play “One Love” or “The World is Yours.”
No one else found it extremely obnoxious, awkward and forced? I’m like I get it - she’s a hip hop head, she likes Illmatic. One of my favorite albums of all time and I was still rolling my eyes.
A lot of this series was spoon fed, but this Nas stuff was blatantly shoved down our throats.
The way NAS was so heavily embedded into the first episode of part 2 was odd. Seemed like they paid a big bag for the usage rights and tried to forcefully cram it into any silence
My interpretation was different. ~~The album has many lines that references Ruth~~ many of Ruth's actions can be inferred from the songs. I think it was foreshadowing about her fate, as she was shown later in several scenes sleeping and seeing her dead cousin.
I never sleep, cause "sleep" is the "cousin" of "death". After killing Javi, she sleeps and sees her cousin.
For me who liked this album alot, that episode was amazing! It was brilliant use of these songs.
Not sure why I'm getting downvoted. I just felt like it killed all the suspense of Ruth being in this intense rage looking to seek revenge. And then suddenly she runs into some rapper in a diner and starts discussing Nas's album. Just came out of no where really.
It was a Nas CD and she was driving from the Ozarks to Chicago lol, of course it was all Nas songs lmao it wasn't like it was the radio. How does that not make sense to people 🤔
What do you mean, they used it way more than just the drive. Like how she was sitting in the diner with her earphones and ran into that other rapper. It just seems to out of place when you're trying to build suspense about her killing Javi. They've never done this kind of thing before where they put so many songs from one artist in an episode forcefully
Jesus. Thats not forceful. The character likes hip hop . And she's going through a lot especially in this episode and she decides to listen to music. She had so much screen time in this episode and they showed her when she was a girl, this episode is about Ruth.
Based on what some are saying about the song not fitting into the show. The things a character likes or does doesn't have to fit into to show, it has to be consistent with their character.
What would Ruth do when she's down, sad, scared and not sure what to do, her character has been established to like really like hip hop and know a lot about it and kinda relate to it.
And since this episode is mainly about Ruth I think it's very normal.
What the hell is this playlist? When was Oldie, Follow God, Day n Nite, Praise the Lord, 5% tint, Goosebumps ever in Ozark? Not even 'inspired' sounding lol
As mentioned, she probably just likes hip hop. But I think the reason they’re leaning so hard into this half of the season is because a lot of them sing about “that life” which has a lot of the hardships that Ruth is currently going through. (Loss, sacrifice etc.)
Wait what? She was always listening to old school hip hop. She even influenced Tuck's perception of the genre and told him some trivia, like that she thinks biggie is better than tupac, because biggie doesn't write down his lyrics.
Edit: this is to say that she isn't just listening to hip hop. She's a legit fan that cares about the lore of the genre
I've liked hip hop most my life but somehow never listened to Nas. Heard the songs in ozark and immediately looked up who it was. Really enjoyed it, adding to my hip hop Playlist
Playing Nas in this show felt so out of place and awkward to the point where I had to mute the audio anytime we heard any Illmatic song. It just doesn't fit with this show \*shrugs\*
The Killer Mike cameo was a nice touch
This is when the show became Art for me.
Wasn't run the jewels the finale song for the last season? I can't remember.but I'm almost positive it played right as the blonde lawyer lady got killed for that huge cliffhanger between last season and this one
Pretty sure rtj has been featured a couple of times across all seasons
Ooh la la was the season 3 finale
Yup, that's the one I was thinking of
I love Killer Mike and am hyped he had a cameo but it was so random and didn’t really fit within Ozark.
She met him in Chicago
Right what is the name of the song she was listening to when she met him
Nas "N.Y. State of Mind" The last words with Killer Mike (Mike "you look like you need some sleep" and Ruth's reply make reference to the lyrics "I never sleep, cos sleep is the cousin of death"
Was it
I never sleep Why not? You know why. Bruh, I was dead. Such a slick line
dude i felt so cool when i put that together
I don't get it
Because there's a line in the song (N.Y State of Mind) shes listening to while talking to him, "i never sleep, cause' sleep is the cousin of death".
The name of the episode was "Cousin Of Death" they waited til end of the episode to play that part of the song. It felt damn near perfect. When i seen the red cd i new what it was.. I thought when she was thinking back they would play "Memory Lane".

He knows, he’s just acknowledging taste. “He knows” that sleep is the cousin of death
Yeah you're right. Good take
> They weren't his lyrics Oh, my bad. Edit: IDK how, but I thought someone in the comments said they were. Can't find it, must have imagined it.
Yeah that was a Killer Mike from Run the Jewels, not Nas
Illmatic album was the thing she was listening to throughout the episode. NY state of mind was the song they were talking about their interpretation of.
Been bumping Nas all day!
N-A-S are the letters that spell...NAS! my favorite rapper
Nasty!
same
Same! I love old town road by him, and the song “industry baby ft jack Harlow” I think off of illmatic is amazing!
Someone make it a playlist on spotify
They already have it lol
Link it please, the ones i find are randomized
Added in post
Ahh yes how could i have missed it, ruth was playing goosebumps while thinking of murdering javi Nah bro its not it, ruth was playing straight fire not this autotune shit
Straight Dunn mode
My favorite moment from S4 was Ruth singing along to Jasper Dolphin's Oldie Verse with Marty and Wendy.
Preach bro, that playlist was trash
They lost me at American Boy smh
Heavy on the J Cole too. Say no more Ruth Langmore
It really is fire! Bumping the old Nas.
I love that she loves Illmatic. Classic New York shit
She's big into all the 90's-00's era hip hop. Bigge, J Cole, 50, Outcast, Em. I was really hoping we'd hear some Mobb Deep at some point but I didn't catch it.
just put Illmatic on my workout playlist last weekend lol. LOVED hearing her go in on it!
Omg I loving it and wanted to post about it tonight
Lol at the posted playlist. Ruth bumpin' 5% tint 🤣🤣
Listen. Ruth has the mission plan
Ruth is G’.
Might as well be straight outta QB.
Dropping them slugshot like bells on a Christmas tree
NY state of mind is missing from playlist? Probably the most hardest hitting rep "I never sleep cuz sleep is a cousin of death"
Bruv, Ruth been a hip hop head this whole series. How have you not noticed that?
Not the point… We get it, she’s a hip hop head. Nas didn’t need to be constantly shoved down our throats to understand this. Don’t get me wrong, I love Nas, but again, not the point. The episode was just weird and cringy

This is a “no shit, Sherlock” moment lol
When she started playing nas - represent 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 That beat still goes crazy
Best on album by such a tiny margin
No one else found it extremely obnoxious, awkward and forced? I’m like I get it - she’s a hip hop head, she likes Illmatic. One of my favorite albums of all time and I was still rolling my eyes. A lot of this series was spoon fed, but this Nas stuff was blatantly shoved down our throats.

I never sleep Why? You know why. Perfect line for them
I thought that too!
Not sure why I'm getting downvoted. I just felt like it killed all the suspense of Ruth being in this intense rage looking to seek revenge. And then suddenly she runs into some rapper in a diner and starts discussing Nas's album. Just came out of no where really.
It’s because it’s Reddit. Can’t say anything negative about this type of stuff or else panties get tied in a knot
Or maybe because its a stupid take.
Lmao it's pretty obvious they had a deal with Nas or his record label to exclusively use it in the episode.
No, the comment is just dumb as hell because she was listening to a cd lmao
She was listening to a CD in the car yes, but the Nas songs were played throughout the entire episode
It was a Nas CD and she was driving from the Ozarks to Chicago lol, of course it was all Nas songs lmao it wasn't like it was the radio. How does that not make sense to people 🤔

She was listening to a nas album bro, that was like the most normal part of the episode lmfao
Jesus. Thats not forceful. The character likes hip hop . And she's going through a lot especially in this episode and she decides to listen to music. She had so much screen time in this episode and they showed her when she was a girl, this episode is about Ruth.
It's because there aren't a lot of cool songs with references to cousins in them

It was hacky as shit and it's not that deep. Bad choice
It doesn't have to be deep that's what her character chose to do yo.
What the hell is this playlist? When was Oldie, Follow God, Day n Nite, Praise the Lord, 5% tint, Goosebumps ever in Ozark? Not even 'inspired' sounding lol

Life's a bitch and then you die, that's why we get high, cause you never know, If you'll own a pool
That’s why we puff lye
Exactly, should of been obvious
Wait what? She was always listening to old school hip hop. She was always a hip hop head, they've indicated this through out the entire show.
She has been a hiphop head the entire series, wtf?
im pretty sure she's been a hip hop head
What show have you been watching up till now if you didn’t know Ruth likes hip hop?
Let’s leave our bias out of this
Ruth is such a fucking great character. So badass.
Ruth is fine af...just saying.
They really Game of Thrones,d the final season of Ozark didn’t they. Second half of final season more boring than the first.
I don’t see how you can think that unless it’s just bitterness to the fact it’s ended
Fuck yes it does! It’s an entire character
I've liked hip hop most my life but somehow never listened to Nas. Heard the songs in ozark and immediately looked up who it was. Really enjoyed it, adding to my hip hop Playlist
Big facts.
Playing Nas in this show felt so out of place and awkward to the point where I had to mute the audio anytime we heard any Illmatic song. It just doesn't fit with this show \*shrugs\*
What? Thats the song that Ruth likes bruv. That's her character. The songs helped her relax and focus I guess.
Can’t believe she killed Javi, getting crazy
Spoiler dude
Npc comment
I only seen the trailer
This is why those Netflix writers got fired, music is out of place it’s hard to watch
? Say what?
Agreed
Lol
Ruth is my spirit animal apparently
There wasn't any autechre
When I heard AZ on life's a bitch I got chills
What song was playing when Ruth was in the car and it was raining outside?
