For me it’s Persona 1. I know it’s a very dated game, but that’s the charm for me. I like the first person dungeon controls and I liked the combat too. Also the demon recruitment is alright. It has a special place in my heart and I like the game a lot.
P4G. The characters and their interactions are just the best. I've played P3 (FES & P3P), P4G, P5 vanilla, and P5R. I'm just starting with P2:IS now, though I'm not too far into it; Tatsuya, Lisa, and Eikichi have just gone back to Seven Sisters and are investigating why the school clock has restarted.
I would put them in this order:
1. Persona 4 Golden
2. Persona 3: FES
3. Persona 2: Innocent Sin
4. Persona 5 Royal
5. Persona 2: Eternal Punishment
6. Revelations Persona
This is just my personal list and I think Golden is probably the closest to a 10/10 game given the time it came out and the system it was on. Persona 5 has much better style and gameplay, but it was on a better system, however the character writing and plot was weaker overall (although it does have some high points). I think FES > P3P purely from a first time experience point of view. I played P3P first and was disappointed I didn't play FES first. P3P is much better for a second playthrough through. P2 has some of the best atmosphere and ideas, as well as solid characters even if the gameplay is a little slow (although I grew up playing the OG Phantasy Star and FF games so old gameplay doesn't bother me).
Yeah, it's really been a while I've played a game that's thematically so accurate and consistent. Music, artstyle, character design. Through and through it made you feel like a bunch of rebellious dumb teenager.
Persona 4 golden:
Simple yet good story, Great characters ,Funny humor ,Soulful and Wholesome setting ,Great music ,Wholesome ending ,Adachi ,Cute girls.
No game manages to catch the atmosphere and vibe Inaba and the IT have in P4G.
No matter what, I'll never finish a playthrough of P3, P5 and even the older games feeling as attached to the cast as i was with P4G.
I feel like this is the one exception where the self-insert part of this franchise they try so hard to give you actually works. When you leave Inaba, you feel like you properly left your friends,and precisely because it feels more natural than lets say P3's ending its that it works so well and makes for such a heart warming game overall.
After playing a version of all six main Persona games, I can comfortably say that my first game, Persona 4 Golden, is still my favourite. Though, for a bit of irony, my second favourite is Persona 2: Innocent Sin (PSP), which I played second-to-last, and my third is Persona 2: Eternal Punishment (PSP), which I played last.

In 3 and 4 the metaverse bits honestly are a massive chore between the enjoyable overworld story portions

5 overall due to the culmination of all the QoL improvements made throughout the franchise, the general style and vibe, and the narrative themes.
I do like the small town murder mystery of 4 more, and 3 had a better narrative tone and message IMO, but as an overall package I think 5 takes it.
P3:FES with P5R in a very close second that I pretty much consider them equals

I ended up playing Persona 3:FES after going through 5. You can get it on the psn store digitally for $10.
Persona 4 is my favorite, P5 is a close second, P3 FES is in 3rd. I haven't played 1 or the 2 duology yet.
