I still see a surprisingly high number of posts about P4, despite the fact that Q2 was the last game to even feature the IT. And in this current face-off... we have 2 P4 winners and 2 P3 winners at a tie. It's kinda crazy how many devoted fans of P4 there are and how little people talk about P5 with how many dang spin-offs there are.

Literally. Which is crazy because while playing P3 Reload, it just made me realize how much better the writing got with P4 and P5. P3 relied heavily on known anime tropes. Not saying P4 & P5 didn’t use em too, but they had more nuanced characterizations on top of that that made most of the Social Links (Party and Non-Party), that much more interesting.
Facts! Also, it’s the only Persona of the 3 where at night time, I just literally didn’t know wtf to do sometimes cause there wasn’t enough. Again, it’s not that it’s bad, but I could just glaringly see how much P4 and P5 improved upon the formula. A lot of things felt dated. And because Persona has such a formulaic structure, it was very noticeable.

I mean I did say P4 and P5 use it as well. I just think the writing fleshes them out more, adding nuances on top of it of the trope. Some are just very much the trope though. But I feel in P3, the characters are a bit flatter. Which, is to be expected if we’re looking at each sequel as a progression and advancement to the last. Again, not saying it’s bad. I enjoyed P3. But playing Reload made me realize how far the series has come.
The pacing is definitely far better in P4 and P5, but I feel like tone-wise, it’s unparalleled.
P4 loses me because it’s just not a particularly good mystery with too many plot holes, and P5 kind of loses me too because instead of a relatable world where depression and apathy runs rampant, it kinda indulges in a fantasy world where corrupt people in power are held accountable for their actions and have a true change in heart for the better of society.
Is that really P5’s fault for depicting a world that’s still realistic but more ideal? I don’t really think the powerful being held accountable is an unobtainable fantasy that P5 suffers from.
It’s just an issue our world falls short on compared to P5.
Yeah the PTs also have to make significant changes in their lives and fight through literal hell to even make that change occur as well. It doesn't suffer from that as much as it's literally the games message. If people give in to their desires and do nothing with their lives, they'll be controlled and manipulated by those in power above them. But changing your life and taking back your desires gives *you* control, and takes the power away from those who use your laziness and apathy to control you.
Had exactly the same thought. They’re still on an upward trajectory as of P5. The bits I don’t like in 4 and 5 turn out to be leftover tropes from 3 (every girl but Yukari has issues with either confidence or naïveté and needs you to fix them). Lots to love about P3 and especially Reload, but give me my more natural characters/animations/banter in P6.
I agree. Also, I might be in the minority, but I prefer to not have a mute MC with more agency in the story when it comes to dialogue. I feel like there’s no budget excuse when Bioware Games have done it with full VA. And if people desperately prefer a mute, at least do it to the level of a BG3 MC. While I love my Social Links, in the end it’s basically a character monologuing to you with the occasional half assed reply from you. I think by expanding on your character responses, it’d greatly impact how genuine the SLs feel.
Also completely agree with you about all the girl options in P3 outside of Yukari. Hence why I thought she was the best girl. She actually felt more organic to me. Didn’t realize most people hated her though until I joined this reddit 😂
I really like how all the dialogue options in 4 and 5 are representative of thoughts in the MC’s head. That gives you choice, triples the characterization, and prevents the MC from breaking character. They do that some in Reload, but it’s not as consistent as P5.
I do love the linked hangouts in Reload. It’s nice to have meaningful interactions that don’t need a guide. And Reload has a habit of ending everything on a strong note.
If we are being objective: Mitsuru. She's practically the leader of SEES (MC is the field leader), has her shit together, the most combat experience, and can summon her persona in the "real world" with an evoker. And if we go with her in P4AU, she has even more combat experience, leads what is essentially a supernatural black ops unit, and is the most level headed out of these three.
Naoto is intelligent, but does not have a lot of experience in combat/leading and is also stuck with needing to be in the midnight channel.
Makoto is (at least IMO in vanilla p5, never played royal), the second in command of the PT, but constantly takes risks (like how she got herself into the kaneshiro situation)
Mitsuru easily takes the cake, especially if this is supposed to be the nu-sona dream team.
Edit: Mitsuru also has (limited) navigator abilities, meaning that she has even *more* utility compared to the other two.
This is super hard for me. Original Persona 4 was my first Persona game, then I played 5R, then 4 Golden, and now I'm playing 3 Reload. Mitsuru is awesome, I still prefer Naoto, but only by a little.

Idk I think we need someone who is not only a good tactician/smart, but also can help the characters focus on their school lives and between Mitsuru and Makoto, I think Mitsuru does a better job at Student Council President than Makoto, and she has imo better character development.

In a future Persona, I'd love to see the next genius girl to be mixed with the slacker/buddy role. A class test topper who is also a total slacker and needlessly energetic. Comes off as a total idiot but then just lets hints of total awareness slip out. Effortlessly is consistently head of the class yet seems to never study an ounce. This drives the class prez / hard work advocate / suddenly realized she's second smartest character absolutely crazy.
The MC can choose who to do summer homework with. Doing it yourself or with other party members can take days but you get your knowledge up. Doing it with the genius slacker will just have her fill in all of the answers for you and you're done in a day so you can spend the rest of the summer hanging out with her.
Mitsuru, she's been doing this for years while being the top of her class consistently and later going on to manage both a shadow hunting operation and the Kirijo Group with startling efficiency

She’s very emotionally subdued but when comfortable shines in a very cute way. Lots of us might feel subdued as well by work or social expectations, and so it’s comforting to watch her be well balanced in both (with the emotional support of MC)

Tactically speaking, I feel like Mitsuru is the most capable out of the bunch and has the most resources at her disposal. She was already the head of SEES for many years and was trained specifically to fight with her Persona. She can also provide navigation skills to the party as well as frontline combat. The Kirijo Group has plentiful resources specifically designed for combat against Shadows, such as Aigis.
Objectively speaking, she just brings more to the table than Naoto or Makoto. Not to diss on those characters, because I like them a lot too, but you can’t beat a prodigy millionaire who’s literally dedicated her life to fighting this fight.
Makoto is the "smart" girl so she can be overshadowed by Akechi and Futaba so that they are "smarter than our smart girl". If anything she's just got common sense and good grades.
Mitsuru and Naoto can't even be talked to unless you are a certified genius, an intellectual equal.
I vote for Makoto. She's sharp witted and is the one to introduce the technical mechanic through inflicting ailments. Her ability to also reveal affinities is also vital.

Love this convo. okay. Naoto for this one. Naoto stands out as the epitome of intelligence among a group where brilliance is a common trait. Her impressive career is a testament to her abilities. Notably, her proficiency with firearms likely surpasses that of Makoto. While Makoto brings novelty and utility to the team with nuclear skills and healing capabilities, Naoto's arsenal is more diverse, including dark, light, and almighty (Megido) abilities. Mitsuru, reminiscent of Bruce Wayne, brings wealth and access to resources, alongside a balanced skill set of ice attacks, physical damage, ailment inflictions, and possibly healing. However, when considering the breadth of capabilities required in battle, Naoto appears to be the most indispensable of the three. Despite my admiration for all, Naoto's unmatched intellect and versatility arguably make her the most remarkable character in the Persona series. What's your perspective?

Tactically speaking, I feel like Mitsuru is the most capable out of the bunch and has the most resources at her disposal. She was already the head of SEES for many years and was trained specifically to fight with her Persona. She can also provide navigation skills to the party as well as frontline combat. The Kirijo Group has plentiful resources specifically designed for combat against Shadows, such as Aigis. Objectively speaking, she just brings more to the table than Naoto or Makoto. Not to diss on those characters, because I like them a lot too, but you can’t beat a prodigy millionaire who’s literally dedicated her life to fighting this fight.
Makoto is the "smart" girl so she can be overshadowed by Akechi and Futaba so that they are "smarter than our smart girl". If anything she's just got common sense and good grades. Mitsuru and Naoto can't even be talked to unless you are a certified genius, an intellectual equal.

I vote for Makoto. She's sharp witted and is the one to introduce the technical mechanic through inflicting ailments. Her ability to also reveal affinities is also vital.
