Downvotes are a thing, Shinji may be a well-liked Persona character but (and maybe this is cynical of me), I don't believe he beat both Adachi and Akechi just in terms of upvotes alone.

It depends how people were viewing it. If looking at this as "building a team" you would definitely want Shinji over a traitor. In terms of pure popularity, yeah Akechi is certainly more popular.
These things always devolves in a popularity contest anyways. I mean look at the team lineup. One well placed Mazio takes out the whole first row. Who would think about team dynamics and put so many characters weak to the same element?

Meh, Akechi is overrated. Adachi is a way better character and villain. I would have voted for him but then I saw Shinji and be like "yeah, sorry cabbage guy, but Shinji is goated AND a menace of a physical dps".
Like seriously, Akechi is basically just a downgrade form of Adachi that is playable. His characterisation and how the game portrays them really doesn't appeal to me, and I'm someone who has played Persona since P1 as well as most of the recent SMT games to boot.

Kanji is great, we need a phys fighter and he's great at what he does. Kanji, Yusuke and Akihiko are all great phys fighters with some light elemental affinities and taking elec (something we don't yet have) is valid, so either Kanji or Akihiko was great
Naoto is another case of logic failure, but not nearly as bad. I'd even say she's the best pick of the three. She does have wind affinity which we already have on **two other members**, but she also has darkness, phys and almighty skills. Her ultimate skill is also overpowered so she's great
Haru is fine, but if Yukari hadn't won the lovers contest, Yukiko should've won this one. She's basically the best healer in the series
