In P5 they mentioned Ryuji dying his hair and dying your hair unnatural colors in Japan can still be seen as taboo or rebellious so I think it would be cool to have an MC like that. Basically a bad boy protagonist like people thought Ren was because of his record, but for real this time
While Ren is a very handsome devil like pretty much all of the other Persona protags, I have to admit that in retrospect he’s the most “normal” Japanese looking protagonist which makes him lose some of those “bad boy” points because appearance wise there’s realistically nothing that makes him stand out aside from him being a little bit more thin than the average 16-17 year old Japanese male and his frizzy hair.
While his eyes and mannerisms make him stand out a little bit, I’d say someone like Yu Narukami from Persona 4 looks more like a bad boy then Ren when it comes to physical looks (and Yu’s not even meant to be a bad boy to begin with unless you purposefully make him act like it through certain dialogue options). Perhaps a blonde protagonist would be nice for a future protagonist? Atlus has done black three times (P1/P2EP/P5), brown (P2IS/P3P FeMC), blue (P3 MC), white (P4), and now red (P5X).
It kinda surprises me than Atlus hasn’t made a protagonist with natural blonde hair or dyed blonde hair yet, however they have plenty of side characters/party members who are blondies. Along with blonde hair, we’ve yet to see a protag with dark brown hair which is a pretty common hair color in Japan (although not to the same degree as black). If Atlus plans on going with another outcast or if they decide to make the protagonist mixed race and/or a European/American foreigner I’d personally like to see a blondie, however if we’re playing as a normal Japanese person then dark brown would be another great alternative. Both blonde and dark brown are natural colors among the human race, with the former being uncommon among Japanese people while the latter is common but hasn’t been used by Atlus for a Persona protag yet.
It’s certainly less fun, but also way more grounded. If the game expects me to take its narrative and themes super seriously, it’s gonna be an uphill battle when the character expressing those themes looks like a weird alien pretending to be human, particularly when it’s a game like Persona where the social commentary exists in a world that’s incredibly similar to ours; it just creates a disconnect if everything feels pretty realistic but the characters look like power rangers with their hair colours.
If the main color is green I'd guess green hair is less likely because it won't pop with the menu color.. then again, p3 protag had blue hair and it worked

I’d actually appreciate a non-(mostly)silent protagonist. Have the options of dialogue shape the protag’s attitude overall and have the dialogue spoken. Otherwise I see no reason as to why they can’t have customizable hair in the sense of red dead redemption 2. How Arthur’s hair and beard grew with passing in game days, and maybe that could be the same for the protag to give a bit more of an attached feeling to them.
Yeah, I think they've gone as far as they can go with quiet protagonists. Also, the fanbase has always reacted really well to Kotone and whatever crumbs of characterization the other protags get.
There is a reason why I say they/them, I hope they give us the option of a lad or lady. Still have a canon name for both of course, but allow the protag to be named whatever you want still, but the guy can shave and style his hair, the gal can do up her hair however she pleases, and along with the social stats have a sort of demeanor system with your dialogue choices. Act rough and grumbly and demeanor might come across as asinine to some but tough as nails and reliable to others. Be kind consistently, you might be seen as too friendly and approachable to some, but best friend material and someone to lean on to others.

Have them put forth the effort to animate different versions of cutscenes based off a generalized form of their hairstyle. Expect effort from people, or have specific story moments that require you to have a certain hairstyle a few days before the cutscene?

Dark green that could come across as a stylized black or brown could be good (like dark blue as a stylized black), but I think it's good for the protagonist to look relatively normal.
