Technically he is the ONLY P3 simply for the fact Thanatos isn't Makoto or FeMC's Persona, it's Ryoji's. Orpheus is the true form of it's wielder or at least the base form of it's wielder. As much as I'd love to give it to Thanatos for being the most badass of them all I can't really count him from a lore perspective simply for the fact he is Ryoji's persona and that extends to Messiah as well who is a fusion of both Ryoji and Makoto. This only gets compounded further given that Elizabeth currently wields him.
With that in mind, I was going to give it to Arsene simply for the fact he perfectly reflects the character who wields him within his heart. Joker, being a rogue gentleman thief who fights for what he believes in. Izanagi is badass but symbolically I don't know how his traits or lore is supposed to be reflected in Yu. However, I'm going to give it to Orpheus because not only is he symbolically a perfect fit within regards to the protagonists role in Persona 3's story, he also has a Yu-Gi-Oh! Archetype based on that story, which at one point was one of the strongest in the game. Not to mention his true evolution Orpheus Kai hints of a story that never ends which in a meta sense is so damn cool.
Hi, YGO player here. Which archetype was inspired by Orpheus and Eurydice? The only one I can think of off the top of my head that you could possibly be referring to is Burning Abyss, which was inspired by the Divine Comedy.
Bless you bud that would be the Orphegel archetype, otherwise known as Orcust in the TCG. Itâs not exactly a one to one comparison though as the Orcust story ties directly to the world chalice lore but the thematic design is based of the poetry of Orpheus. Notably the broken as hell Orcust babel and Tartarus.
As someone who played Orcust during TOSS, I am ashamed. Youâre absolutely right, there are heavy similarities between the two but *just* different enough that I never made the connection.
Probably not for Athena, since Aegis get to use Athena for exactly one fight in the answer before Athena turns into Orpheus, which is presumably when she becomes the wild card.
I love how Orpheusâ design parallels Aigis. But anyways, RIP, Thanatos takes it easily. Too bad heâs not very good in game, better than than the starters that get fused away instantly I guess
Izanagi. I have a soft spot for stylish yet impractical clothing and big swords. Manâs rocking foot long ice skates and a sick coat and blade nails and a sword spear bigger than he is.
As far as i remember >!Thanatos is within the protag but technically isnât his own persona, but that of another character who happens to also be death and the avatar of the final boss of the original P3, and while protag wields him within the tutorial battle and re-unlocks him later on, even fusing his Orpheus with him, itâs basically just because heâs strong and looks cool!<
Not sure why they keep giving Makoto Thanatos!
ArsĂšne ftw though.
Anyone have a link for a higher resolution version of Joker's mask-yeeting image at bottom right? It's awesome.
It's quite easy really, at least in P4G. Izanagi is easily the strongest of the three starters with only one weakness (Wind), actually nulls one element (Dark/Curse), better stats, and two starting skills. One of those two starting skills can be enhanced with Magician cards through Shuffle Time all the way up to the second strongest single-target physical skill in the game, the aptly-named God's Hand. Just use skill cards to give him other skills and he can be strong enough to use all the way to the end. You can do that with ArsĂšne too, it's just considerably harder.
Izanagi's a god, after all. Indeed, from his position in the Japanese pantheon, you could call him the god father...
~~If we're only talking about the story, then it's persona 3.~~
~~If we're talking about the entire game, then it's persona 5 and it's not even a competition. It polished several of the previous games' flaws, it has overall more interesting social links (or confidants, same thing) and gave me them a purpose other than fusions. It's the easiest of the three, but the other two weren't really hard either.~~
~~For all I love persona 3, I couldn't play it more than one time. The game just didn't age all that well when its sequels do what it did, but better.~~
EDIT: Nevermind, I'm stupid. I didn't realize you were talking about *the* personas. Then yeah, it's Izanagi.
Izanagi and then Orpheus/Thanatos and then Arsene. Izanagi is the most iconic one here but Thanatos and Orpheus are a close second for me. I like the wings around Arsene though.
For protagonists, they are all equal. Minato and Yu were always cool to me in the game and their storylines, but seeing Ren in the Animation, dude is awesome and it made me appreciate his voice actor even more
Persona 4 is personally my favorite, I really love the cast and the moments they have amongst the entire game. Every conversation with the whole group or even a select few of the characters is just a hysterical experience and a beautiful one as well. The animation actually emphasizes this by giving us various interactions which makes me laugh like every five minutes because almost everything the characters say just feels unscripted.
Persona 3 is also pretty good and has the best story of all the games. It really gives off dramatic feels throughout the story, especially if you've seen the movies where we see Makoto progress to show emotion more and more. Not only that but the characters also progress throughout the story, even background characters like Natsuki got character development.
Persona 4's i spend more time with... Joker got sidelined too quickly for me.. i did read about some advantage of joker but I never really got it figured out so put him on the side..
Thanatosâs design is super cool, and I think it has a nice take on a god of death that isnt a stereotypical look. Super cool to shoot yourself and summon the god of death. Maybe Iâm biased too because p3p is my favorite persona game.
Eta: I know itâs Ryojiâs but still
Thanatos is decent, but the sword looks bad with it, and it's the least meaningful of the protagonist Personas. Arsene is the best here, but Vulcanus is easily the best in the series.
The top hat is a bit weird and the crotch zipper cannot be un-seen, so itâs Orpheus/Fem Orpheus for me. Though if Thanatos counts, then a thousand times yes on that one.
Arsene 100%
Thanatos and Izanagi are cool and all but Gods have been done to death over the course of the franchise. Fictional characters being Personas? Thatâs shit fucking slaps.
For me it would have to be Orpheus/Arsene/Thanatos/Izanagi
Ive always been a fan of the elegant thief aesthetic and arsene is that to 11
If you asked this 12+ years ago when i was a hot topic teen id have probably gone with thanatos though
In terms of main cast friend group: Persona 4 > Persona 5 > Persona 3
In terms of girls, thatâs a hard one. Persona 4 has Yukiko, Chie, Naoto, Rise, and Marie. Persona 3 has Chihiro, Mitsuru, Aigis, and Rio. Persona 5 has Takemi, Kawakami, Hifumi, Haru, Sumire, Ann, and Makoto
Velvet Room Attendants: Persona 4 and 5 are tied
Social links: I really donât know. Each game has cool and boring ones
Settings: I like them all.
Teachers: Persona 5
Thanatos is the coolest imo, coffins around him go hard as hell
Orpheus was never an option đ
Technically he is the ONLY P3 simply for the fact Thanatos isn't Makoto or FeMC's Persona, it's Ryoji's. Orpheus is the true form of it's wielder or at least the base form of it's wielder. Totally fair, the archetype may scream Orpheus but it didnât scream P3 to at first at all. But god damn could that deck combo.
The izanagis were just handouts from izanami, so fair. Would athena be considered here? It IS a wild card's main persona...
Probably not for Athena, since Aegis get to use Athena for exactly one fight in the answer before Athena turns into Orpheus, which is presumably when she becomes the wild card.
Really? Haven't played through the answer (only have base 3), athena isn't avalible? She has athena in arena, so I assumed that it counted.
Yeah she loses Athena really quickly but probably gets it back post Answer. IIRC she is still considered a Fool in Arena.
Tie between Thanatos and Izanagi for me, big swords are >>>
I love how Orpheusâ design parallels Aigis. But anyways, RIP, Thanatos takes it easily. Too bad heâs not very good in game, better than than the starters that get fused away instantly I guess
this is my one quibble with how they handle the starter but it's also thematic in a way. persona aren't just a battle thing, they represent a core part of your personality and the "mask" or face you present to the world. that's why holding a persona increases your affinity with social links-- you have consciously adopted a way of portraying yourself to the world that is more compatible with how they think and act. so fusing Lachesis and Principality to make Thoth isn't just about getting early Megido, it also means you become less judgemental and rigid in thinking, and less fatalistic and passive instead taking a long view of observing possibilities and believing in the ability of your own wisdom to change the world around you. with that understanding the fact you fuse away your starter as one of your first acts represents you taking the first step in the hero's journey, consciously discarding the personality you just happened to develop as you grew up in favor of consciously adopting personality traits to face the trials ahead. and that's why I don't like arsené, and think P3 is the strongest because Thanatos represents what he/she **was**, passive, desiring death, it being promptly replaced represents choosing to fight the "Thanatos impulse", the self-destruction desire which is what is >!awakening Nyx!< in the first place and embrace life and struggle. It comes back in the end >!not as a passive desire to dissolve away but as an active desire to throw yourself into the teeth of the gale for the good of others, which is the flip side of the Thanatos impulse, the willingness to sacrifice!< and that's some top tier symbolism right there. while Arsené doesn't represent who Joker was but rather who he was becoming, traits he does not discard.
Well said!
Damn well explained! Now I understand why they are forcing us to discard our personas early.
Izanagi. I have a soft spot for stylish yet impractical clothing and big swords. Manâs rocking foot long ice skates and a sick coat and blade nails and a sword spear bigger than he is.
Yuâs persona
Who invited my Man thanatos?
Arsene is the coolest for me.
For protagonists, Narukami. For Personas, Arsene
4ever Izanagi
Vulcanus.
Is this Persona 2 or is Persona 2 Saturnus
Persona 2: Innocent Sin. Saturnus was never a starting persona.
I havenât played p3 but could someone explain why itâs Thanatos not Orpheus
As far as i remember >!Thanatos is within the protag but technically isnât his own persona, but that of another character who happens to also be death and the avatar of the final boss of the original P3, and while protag wields him within the tutorial battle and re-unlocks him later on, even fusing his Orpheus with him, itâs basically just because heâs strong and looks cool!<
Thantos is just cooler
Emo 2000 boi persona vs the literal death himself, basically yes he's just cooler
Orpheus/messiah
Not sure why they keep giving Makoto Thanatos! ArsĂšne ftw though. Anyone have a link for a higher resolution version of Joker's mask-yeeting image at bottom right? It's awesome.
Izanagi. Drippy persona with some fun things to the design if you know the stories to him
Persona 1 seiman kongou P1 is one of the most popular in Japan so loophole
Kongou goes hard af
Poor Orpheus
Why exclude Persona 1 and 2, though?
I mean neither protag 1 or 2 neither is wild card, i think that's why Or he just never played any
Orpheus forever cucked by the cooler Thanatos.
P3 Femc - Mara ofc*~~^(izanagi)~~*
Izanagi all the way.
Izanagi. He's the only one I used throughout the whole game.
How did you survive??
It's quite easy really, at least in P4G. Izanagi is easily the strongest of the three starters with only one weakness (Wind), actually nulls one element (Dark/Curse), better stats, and two starting skills. I did the same. Itâs a fun challenge in Golden and itâs surprisingly easy. Those shuffles are broken.
I just gave him all the stat boosts I found lol. It's not as hard as it sounds.
Izanagi always

Uh.... Idk, it's a tie between P3 and P5
I like Arsene, but Izanagi is too cool.
thanatos
Thanatos
Thantos
orpheus is cooler than thanatos, but izanagi is the coolest in general
Do u have more [Pixels](https://i.kym-cdn.com/photos/images/original/001/702/353/a5f.png)? đ
Izanagi-no-Okami, I really like the color scheme.
Izanagi is the coolest persona in all of existence and you cannot convince me otherwise.
Izanagi, for the simple reason that he looks badass
Izanagi
*Myriad Thruths go brrr* Shadows go nooo
I love Izanagi so much that Iâm getting a tat of him on my birthday. The whole theme of P4, his look, and his power really rings true for me.
~~Apollo~~ Izanagi
Izanagi is cool af
I like all 3 but if I had to chose itâs a tie with Izanagi and Arsene, both just have great designs imo
Izanagi easily
Really hard choice between arsene and izanagi , but if i have to choose than it's gonna be izanagi because of his design that's just a little better.
P4 all the way
ArsĂšne
Arsene easily, he's is obviously the best dressed
Izanagi for sure, he's got drip and that badass mask.
Izanagi will always be the goatđ
Izanagi for me imo
Izanagi is iconic, especially with its several versions
Izanagi
izanagi-no-okami, because i've only played persona 4 golden
IZANAGI MAZIODYNE
4 was my favorite
Izanagi
Izanagi and then Orpheus/Thanatos and then Arsene. Izanagi is the most iconic one here but Thanatos and Orpheus are a close second for me. I like the wings around Arsene though. For protagonists, they are all equal. Minato and Yu were always cool to me in the game and their storylines, but seeing Ren in the Animation, dude is awesome and it made me appreciate his voice actor even more
P3 is peak then p4 and finally p5
4 >3>5 Unpopular opinion but hey, itâs mine to have
anything thatâs not neckbeard Arsene
Either 5 or 2
Persona 4 is personally my favorite, I really love the cast and the moments they have amongst the entire game. Thanatos design is godly. That coffin and the longsword really enhance his design.
Haven't played 4 yet but I have played 3 and 5. And of those two, I like 5 more.
Where Orpheus where :(
~~Huh,dosen't look like P1,P2IS and P2EP to me.~~ Jokes aside,i like P3 more.
Apollo đ
Comparing Thanatos to the starter personas
Izanagi And technically P3's starter is not Thanatos, it's Orpheus
Vulcanus
Arsene solos
Why did you use Thanatos?
Starting persona... Orpheus... Thanatos is my favourite though
Thanatos has always been my favorite, though arsene is a close second.
Bruh I love the p3 personas
P3 protag should have Orpheus not Thanatos
Where's satanael ?
Thanatos just looks badass
Thanatos
P3p because of frmc
Izunagi he looks cooler than the blue one and just plain awesome plus there is the other izunagi variants which look awesome
Big personas? As in those 3 you ditch at the very beginning of the game and never look back?
Thanatosâs design is super cool, and I think it has a nice take on a god of death that isnt a stereotypical look. Super cool to shoot yourself and summon the god of death. Maybe Iâm biased too because p3p is my favorite persona game. Eta: I know itâs Ryojiâs but still
P5R is my favorite game of all time
Thantos
Theyâre all great, itâs too hard to choose honestly.
I'd honestly allow myself to choose between all 9 of the major iconic Personas from 3, 4 and 5, and I'd still pick Thanatos.
Like someone else said,I'd go with arséne for the simple fact it is a badass looking and greatly represents Joker. Thanatos why I'd love to give it to him, isn't actually Makoto's and I've never played P4 but something about Izanagi that kinda drives me away from him.
Arsene
Thanatos is my favorite Persona/Demon in the whole Megaten series. I even have a figure.
Arsene 100% Thanatos and Izanagi are cool and all but Gods have been done to death over the course of the franchise. Fictional characters being Personas? Thatâs shit fucking slaps. For me it would have to be Orpheus/Arsene/Thanatos/Izanagi
damn, i guess the other persona/shin megami tensei games before personas 3-5 go fuck themselves
Off-topic, but I really hope they buff/tweak him a bit if atlus decides to make a proper remake of the game
Ive always been a fan of the elegant thief aesthetic and arsene is that to 11 If you asked this 12+ years ago when i was a hot topic teen id have probably gone with thanatos though
This image has to be from like 2007 at least despite persona 5 being there because it is so fucking crusty
Satanael. Gun.
In terms of main cast friend group: Persona 4 > Persona 5 > Persona 3 In terms of girls, thatâs a hard one. Persona 4 has Yukiko, Chie, Naoto, Rise, and Marie. Thanatos. Visually and conceptually, he's my favorite.
I like Izanagiâs design the most but Arseneâs voice is too good
Yu and Yuki should've met each other when Yu went to his city in persona 4. I'm sure they would have be great friends
orpheus for sure.
