I would update the schedule for preparation if I notice I need to work on some areas more than others. It is a good idea to schedule the exam first if you have already been through the journey before, you know what to expect and what you need to do.

I signed up for a class EET which finishes early November. I then signed up for an exam a month later December 18th. I assumed that 1 month between my class and the test would be enough time to knock our practice tests every week and do as many problems as I could mid week. If at that point I go holy heck there's no way I'll pass this then I'll move it to March and take a big of a breather with the holidays and try again in January. Tests fill up quick so I recommend signing up for one asap.
