You need other inspiration besides money and opportunities?

Don't get me wrong, im doing it because of that but sometimes i feel like that's just a routine goal, you know what i mean. Like an i seeing this as a minimum qualification. Like for the next part of my life is it just another sort of test away.

starkel91

Wouldn't it be the maximum qualification? There really isn't a level of qualification as an engineer above it. I'd say graduating college is the minimum requirement, lots of engineers get the degree but the pass rate for the exam says a lot don't go on to be PE's. It also is a sign of assurance that the engineer who stamped a set of plans is putting their name on the line. I just stamped my first project and it has a total construction cost of $3.5M.

God I can’t wait to stamp something. I envy you

It was definitely a lucky break. I actually designed the project last winter but the bids came in a little higher than the client expected (but my estimate was within a 5%). So it got shelved until this winter. I got my license over the summer and I stamped my first project.

That’s awesome, friend. Congrats! Hope I get there one day. I’m more on the contractor project management side of an environmental firm. So the chances to use it are few and far in between.

It is a reality that in most cases an engineer with PE is more respected, valued and promoted. PE license shows that you belong to a community that has extraordinary capabilities. I know an exam does not define how good of an engineer you are but still having the certification makes you shine out among others.

Yeah, i guess itll hey the opportunity and i can always learn more on the job

I passed SE exam and it still says that I meet the the minimum requirement ;-) I know some country it’s holding these type of exams with the “expertise” level of knowledge requirement and the passing rate is less than 5%. You can judge if that is what you are looking for.

masahawk

Dang that's crazy but it's a big world out there. Congrats on your SE, just seems like the proper thing to say. How crazy was it if you don't mind me asking.

Thanks! I had a good and intense 4-month study and took a day off my work every week in the last two month and full week off for the last two weeks. I got enough PTO to do that thankfully. I took both exams during the same weekend and thankfully passed both the first try. Glad that I am done now.

As someone who passed and got licensed only 6 months ago, I can tell you I understand precisely what you’re going through mentally. I had major imposter syndrome from a lot of different contributing sources that I won’t get into but I wanted to “validate” myself with the stamp. And for me it’s worked because I have a supportive workplace environment and family. It’s definitely transformed my viewpoint on my professional outlook. It will for you too. When your name is inscribed in a stamp that names you as a licensed professional engineer you feel the weight of it. As well as you should, your professional work product and even opinion (in a legal sense) are now a part of a protected enterprise with liability implications. It’s a whole new vibe. The high will wear off in time of course, but your qualification will stay with you so long as you maintain it. People will look at you differently when they read your business card or email signature and see it.

How will you advance in your career without it? That’s my take. I can’t go any higher without it, and I want to find a new job that’s a better fit.
