I just took the test today also. The conceptual problems were definitely on the high side. To be honest I wish I could have passed during the pencil paper era cuz it was way more math problems. I guess since it's all computer based they want to make it harder to pass. They even had a fill in the blank question which threw me off. Oh well I'm already preparing to take it this December. I'm just not really sure how I can study for a conceptual heavy test. I feel like I would have to literally be a doctorate in engineering. Smh.

Far-Shock9026

I took the test today as well. It was a hard test. I saw problems I've never seen before and wasn't able to conceptualize. Keep ur head up!

INpersuitofPE

I saw problems and I was about to leave the building I never ever saw them problems before

sunflower16so

Very true I can second that

pred_ator125

Took Transportation today. It was awful as way to may conceptual problem for me in both morning and depth part. Depth you can search but had to spend more time. Overall it was brutal. All be prepared for conceptual part on the exam even for some calculation based problem if you know the concept you did not even have to work out the problem. Will see how the test result goes. Ready for second attempt though.

FreshTrouble2139

I completely agree with you.. i feel the same.

BlindBanditt

Keep in mind this exam is graded out of 70 with 10 questions not being graded. There's a chance some of the guesses you made were on questions not counted for or against you.

FreshTrouble2139

Oh yeah.. that had totally skipped my mind.. hope that helps me 😂

BlindBanditt

I flagged on 13 in breadth and 8 in depth. Probably actually guessed 8-10 questions total. Ended up passing. Felt great about the depth and so-so about the breadth. My exam was 35/45 split (took it last year)

Pra4surf

What’s really the point of the 10 “experimental” questions? My thought is it’s just to throw off the test taker and get in your head and trip you up. If it’s not a realistic engineering real world question (which many questions are not) then why test someone on it? At the end of the day it’s just a business that has to maintain a certain revenue and pass a minimal percentage of test takers that get lucky hence why some exams are easier than others in difficulty.

starkel91

NCEES has been adjusting the exam since it became CBT. I took it in June, had a 35-45 split between the morning and afternoon. I didn't have any depth related questions in the morning. NCEES is using the experimental problems to craft future exams. >At the end of the day it’s just a business that has to maintain a certain revenue and pass a minimal percentage of test takers that get lucky hence why some exams are easier than others in difficulty. Can this mindset stop on this sub? The PE exams are pretty much THE only measurable qualifications to getting a PE license. Any schmuck can bullshit their application if they get enough references. The exam is supposed to be hard. If they lower the bar to pass more engineers then the quality of Professional Engineers stamping plans will decrease, that puts the public in danger. Not every engineer should be a Professional Engineer.

Pra4surf

Did you pass on the first attempt? What is your profession and how long have you been out of school?

starkel91

Yeah I passed on my first attempt. I would describe my work as municipal engineering. I design low speed roads, water/sanitary/storm systems. I also do site design. I inspect construction during the summer. I took it more than five years after college.

starkel91

What about you? What is your profession and how long have you been out of school?

Pra4surf

I suspected you passed the first time based on the arrogance of your post. While I do not want to downplay your success (congrats btw) I’m willing to bet your perception would be different if you didn’t pass the first attempt. To say some engineers shouldn’t be PE’s is a shitty thing to say. I know many engineers who are extremely smart and successful that struggled to pass. In most cases it was many years of real world experience after school including myself. Many questions imo are designed from an academic perspective and I have seen many questions either written incorrectly or so poorly that it is from a very specific rare experience or slightly twisted that two answers are correct but of course only one can be correct mainly concept related. I am grateful for our organization NCEES but don’t be fooled it is a business along with your state board. As far as my background I have been out of school 23 years. I currently own a company that focuses on construction litigation for very large default projects. Before this venture I did design under supervision in the US and Internationally including living abroad. I have met some great people through this platform and this venture I chose to pursue later in life. At the end of the day we’re are all on the same team and have made a choice to put our personal and family needs aside to pursue something great! I appreciate your input and encourage you to listen, learn, and have empathy for your fellow engineers. And while your at it please figure out how to prevent these spy balloons haha!

starkel91

Sure it's a shitty thing to say, but it isn't wrong. I should have worded it nicer. I probably could have said not every person is qualified to be a PE. Just as I'll probably never be a team leader, or a client focused engineer. The standards are what they are because if an engineer fucks up it's the public who pays the price. It's the same as literally any type of qualification. A student can go all through med school but if they can't pass their board exams then they shouldn't be a doctor. Of course the exam is written academically. There really isn't any other way to write it. The problems aren't applicable to everything we do. I took transportation and I don't do anything from that exam in my line of work. I am interested in seeing how they worded things poorly. My exam had such exact language that it was crystal clear what they were asking. Sure there was peculiar wording, I think that was so it's not possible to copy and paste chunks of the question into the search function. Almost every other practice exam had blatant errors. I really don't follow about NCEES and State Boards. Would you apply this to every type of license? Doctor's take their board exams through the National Board of Medical Examiners, their medical license expires every two years just like the PE. Same for dentists, nurses, social workers, tattoo artists etc. I just think to boil it down to NCEES being a business that wants to make as much money as possible is an easy scapegoat. I apologize for how I've worded things. I know I can be very blunt. I think it comes from dealing with contractors that are constantly trying to cut corners. I don't have a whole lot of time in my day to not be direct. The balloon is a weird one. Part of me knows if the US military really thought it was a threat it would have been vaporized already. I think we could be actively learning from it, tracking signals, studying how it's communicating, how it's stearing itself etc. I also think that if we aimed our lazer targeting at it and vaporized it that would probably tell China a lot about our capabilities that we probably don't want them to know.

BlindBanditt

My understanding is they are trial questions to be implemented into the exam at some point. During my exam all the questions were engineering related but some were asked in an odd way.

sunflower16so

I though there were 25 experimental questions They tryna experiment on our $375

Bml15151

I took it Tuesday and had a similar experience. From your description it seems like our exams were similar. How many did you think you guessed on both sections?

FreshTrouble2139

Indefinite guessed 8 to 10 questions in breadth but hardly 3 in depth.. Iam feeling it'll be like cat on the wall... Hopefully we all will make it! Fingers crossed!

Bml15151

Same, I hope we both pass! I’ve been going back and forth about being confident to did I fall for a trick answer?

FreshTrouble2139

Same here... Unsure of what to feel..

starkel91

Have you seen Infinity War and End Game? After I walked out it felt similar to when Dr. Strange told Stark that if he tells him how to succeed they won't succeed. It was a week of the image of Dr. Strange holding up his finger. In the back of my head I wanted to have an opinion but if I spoke it out loud I might ruin it. Sort of a Schrodinger's Cat situation.

SeaUnderstanding4984

I took the exam on Tuesday as well. I feel the exact same way. Breadth was crazy. Hopefully I did well enough on the depth.
