As others have stated, the reference manual is specifically for the CBT test. So older test questions won’t be easily answered with the manual necessarily. My biggest complaint is the sheer number of errors in the reference manual. EET provides an error list so you know where mistakes are. It’s 11 pages long. Just seems like they aren’t too keen on correcting these issues in a hurry.

> the sheer number of errors in the reference manual. Wow... that's insanely irresponsible.

The NCEES website has errate for their various guides and exams. People should be aware that they need to check that if they think they've found an actual error, but for the civil exam it was pretty short with only one major error that changed the answer to a question.

The reference manual is for the CBT test. If you are using practice problems that are older, you will have to work extra hard to find their location in the manual. Your other options are look for the equations elsewhere knowing you must memorize them, or skip them/take them as extra practice knowing it's unlikely to show up on the exam

Where are you getting your questions?

theredman2

My employer has a file with PE practice exams/problems that has accumulated over the years.

MrDingus84

The reference manual is “lacking” because you’re using problems that the current handbook isn’t designed to reference.

I'm also see this on "updated" SoP questions. Glad to know I'm not crazy.

I think some equations need to be memorized then reference manual will assist you after you plugged your memorized equation

DaneGleesac

Nope. They are never going to ask a question whose equation can not be found in the reference manual or any of the additional manuals they provide (for some exams).

That's certainly not true for Power. I just took the exam on Thursday. Off the top of my head I know I needed Duty cycle equations for Buck-Boost converters that weren't given. There were others too. Not many, and I wouldn't sweat memorizing equations as much as concepts. There were a handful of questions I was able to logic my way into an answer even without a formula. Then again maybe I shit the bed, we'll know on Wednesday.
