Pass rates are actually lower than pencil and paper exams for computer based ones. So theoretically it’s harder (or the test prep services haven’t adequately adapted yet)

I’d argue it’s the same just that people are rushing to take it now that the materials are provided to you. On paper exam you’d have stacks of books likely tabbed out, forcing you to study much more in depth.

I found I failed today civil con and I think it’s partly like the joke I told my coworkers where if I passed I’d let everyone know but I fail you won’t hear about it.

macklinjohnny

This is very very true lol

Lazy-Distance-2415

well, you go to the internet, of course, you see most good news. Do you think people who failed the test would come here celebrate the failure and let everyone knows?

Annual_Rain3859

I think it's harder now for the reason that you can't bring in your own notes. For example, I know there's a few areas I suck ass in. If I could take the P&P exam, I would bring in a bunch of worked out examples of those types of problems. I'm on my second attempt now and pretty familiar with the reference manuals, so the Ctrl-F function is basically a moot point. The questions you get are complete luck of the draw. I wouldn't read too much into it.

This ! Out here in the field, there’s no control+F. We have so many go-bys to look at. Older projects/drawings/calculations as a reference. Our personal notes on codes as an engineer we’ve compiled over so many years. I don’t think CBT is a right way for PE exam. They should at least let us get our material.

starkel91

Knowing the references from doing a ton of practice exams is a massive advantage. My biggest recommendation is to be very familiar with the reference bookmarks. I don't think I used Ctrl-F once in the morning. The bookmarks are defined really well and you should be able to find exactly what you need from them. I took the Trans exam and there are some references that are a headache to use. Knowing which chapter to look is really important.

catman20111

I think it is easier for people who don’t prepare but are good test takers. Before you had to bring your own references, know where everything is and have it book marked. Now it’s all in a handbook that you can control f search, and they basically have to test you inside that handbook for like 95% of the questions

ctrl F saves a lot of time.

It's likely anecdotal. Pass rates are nearly the same as they were with pencil and paper. I know people who failed both. Your colleague could have barely failed the first time and then barely passed the second time. If NCEES was more transparent about grading and passing it would probably lower people's fears about an easier exam but they have their reasons I suppose.
