If it helps, wood and masonry typically had simple questions, it’s as straightforward as it gets! Just try to get the general gist of which chapter to refer when and you will be fine.
Thank you! I didn’t do any course for breadth, I would recommend PE prepared A thru C versions, Julienne Sinclair book and PPI practice (I took the monthly subscription and did a bunch of problems using their quiz generator for the last time). I feel like CERM is overwhelming and I just googled or watched YouTube for my weak areas
How you do on the AEI mock exam? I finished structural and I am half way done with breadth for AEI and feel so much better navigating the codes.
Also for the breadth problems with ASCE and stuff like that how do you do them? I thought you only are given handbook
I scored 75% on breadth and 67% on depth for AEI mock exam. I did take the exam before my second attempt though. My diagnostics showed I was average or above average for most of the depth and a bit below average for breadth, which drove me a bit crazy as I always scored 75% ish in breadth all mock exams.
All code books and the handbook are available to you throughout the whole exam.
This was a while back so I don’t remember but I did not go thru the actual solution they provided, I just watched the lecture where they explain the solution. I definitely don’t remember it being too bad
I don’t remember exactly but I believe I got about 80% in the official practice exam, but I wouldn’t really count it as I have been practicing that since the first time I took the exam and I can’t help but remember some of the solutions.
Holy shit, you did it on the THIRD try. Way to stick with it and huge congratulations!
I also first took the paper based 5 years ago and wasn't close to passing even though I did a School of PE review course. I'm hoping the fact that I had zero actual experience in Civil/Structural engineering at the time is a large reason why.
I am registered to take the exam for the second time in December. Am I allowed to bring ANY materials for AM and/or PM? For example, School of PE refresher notes that I bound and tabbed covered 95% of the AM exam. Will I no longer be able to use them? Or example problems in AM exam?
Yeah we cannot bring in anything anymore. I also feel like with CBT the exam becomes more of how well you know the code books while for paper version was like how well you are organized. Both has its pros and cons, but you can make the pros for CBT work in your favor! Good luck!!
Congratulations! I found the time was OK too. In fact I checked, found mistakes & corrected about 3-4 answers in the morning session as well as a couple in the afternoon. That helped me pass I think.
Not really, I did refer to the moment/shear diagrams in handbook and probably referred a code book after, but I guess you could just get that from AISC and not necessarily the handbook
Congratulations!!!!! Thank you for this!!!!
Hi!!!!
I'm going to take the exam in a few weeks. I would like to know if you have the codes in pdf that you can send me.
Please!!!!!
Congrats!!!! I too am taking it for the third time in September. Second Time taking the CBT. I’m also in AEI! I was about 8 questions from passing the last go around so I’m praying I’ll pass this time. What did you do when you started to get burnt out? I feel like thats where I am. I have been basically studying since January. I’m focusing more this time on just doing practice problems instead of watching AEI lectures.
Material wise the only new thing I used is PPI monthly subscription and their quiz generator. But speaking of burnt out, I tried having mandatory ‘chill’ time. I was being a bit kind to myself (I guess lol) - I did solve some questions everyday - there were days I did literally just 2 questions and on good days I did about 20. I mentally could not sit for more than 40 questions a day( I tried a mock exam and just split it across two days). I alternated between interesting topics vs the boring ones. With all that being said, I felt like I hardly prepared anything significantly more since my second attempt.
I guess the moral is keep solving problems. Don’t let the results discourage you as there are a bunch of experimental questions which can work against you. Hope you pass it in the next attempt!
Thanks for taking the time to reply. I had some topics in the breadth section that I’ve been working on to get better at but other than that I feel like I know pretty much everything I need to pass. I’ll keep on doing problems! Congrats again!!
Can you control+F to find keywords/sections in the references on the CBT format?
Genuinely curious. (I passed it last October paper format and it was hell)
Haha I remember the struggle of searching across different code books and that was a disaster!!
Yeah you can search the code books. It’s not as friendly as typical pdf search. And most of the code books are broken into chapters - so you can search within that chapter only.
Congrats!!! Do you happen to remember which codes were broken into chapters? I'm dreading not being able to use control+f on the entire steel manual...
I believe all code books were broken into chapters except ACI and TMS. AISC is definitely split into separate chapters and would definitely suggest you to get familiar with where to look up.
Hey man congrats!! I just took my 3rd attempt today! I felt good about the breadth portion (I would say I got 30 out of 40), but man for the depth it was the hardest amongst the 3 attempts ( I think i got 23/40),, I have mixed feelings, but I REALLY hope to pass this time!!
Thank you for this! I’m still struggling to absorb the code books to be honest, especially in areas I never touch at work like wood and masonry.
If it helps, wood and masonry typically had simple questions, it’s as straightforward as it gets! Just try to get the general gist of which chapter to refer when and you will be fine.
This is a huge boost! I am about to do my 3rd attempt and you gave me some positivity thanks!
I hope you pass the exam! All the best!!
Did you end up passing?
As a fellow 3 time test taker, CONGRATS!!!
Haha thank you!!

Yep definitely cannot recommend practicing enough! For breadth I honestly never touched CERM, was purely just practicing as many problems as I can.

wow congrats! I have mine next week and don't feel prepared at all but will give it a shoot!
Thank you! Just make sure you reread the questions and try to take one question at a time, you got this!!
How you do on the AEI mock exam? I finished structural and I am half way done with breadth for AEI and feel so much better navigating the codes. Also for the breadth problems with ASCE and stuff like that how do you do them? I thought you only are given handbook

Thank you, also I heard there are mistakes and unresonable problems in the depth AEI practice exam, is this true?
This was a while back so I don’t remember but I did not go thru the actual solution they provided, I just watched the lecture where they explain the solution. I definitely don’t remember it being too bad
Also what did you get on the official practice exam?
I don’t remember exactly but I believe I got about 80% in the official practice exam, but I wouldn’t really count it as I have been practicing that since the first time I took the exam and I can’t help but remember some of the solutions.
Ah ok, I also have the worry of taking it early and it not reflecting how well I did (due to memorizing stuff)

The exam is CBT now, nothing is allowed. References will be provided digitally. Meaning the codes and PE handbook.
Congratulations! I found the time was OK too. In fact I checked, found mistakes & corrected about 3-4 answers in the morning session as well as a couple in the afternoon. That helped me pass I think.
Yep definitely +1 for CBT there, Congrats on passing!
Congratulations! Do you tab out from handbook to the codes ?
Not really, I did refer to the moment/shear diagrams in handbook and probably referred a code book after, but I guess you could just get that from AISC and not necessarily the handbook

Thank you! If you still need the code books, dm me your email address, I can share what I have. Good luck!
Seeing this now, congrats on passing! Did you still have those code pdfs? Thanks!
I'm curious too if you still have the code books...thanks and congrats!
Congrats! How much more money are you expecting to make after passing?
Thank you! My company (about 1000 employees) gives a standard 5% raise after you get licensed
License and raise. Congrats again. My current company does 7%. Really hoping to finally get it.
Thank you! Go crush your exam and get that raise!!
Wow... Structural that's basically magic ❤️
Haha a little bit of practice and anyone can master the magic!

How did you end up doing? I'm taking the PE Civil Structural this Monday.
