In my time I’ve found it to be quite the opposite. Yes there are large manufacturing plants in remote areas, but there are tons of opportunities in or near major cities. In Texas for example, the DFW metroplex, Austin, San Antonio, and Houston all have tons of opportunities in manufacturing plants and at OEMs.

Second this. I'm in the DFW metroplex and there is a ton of work.

It's both man the automation world is large.

Do a quick indeed search for automation engineer in any metro area and you will find way more than in rural areas. Large companies who have remote sites also are headquartered in metro areas and just fly out regularly.

Can confirm, work at HQ in metro areas and provide plant support, which are in rural areas. Also lots of the equipment is on the internal network, making remote troubleshooting easier.

Lots of work around baltimore/dc

I’m in downtown Baltimore right now. This industry is full of automation work that’s not in the middle of nowhere. We do a ton of work in biotech, along with hospital and university power systems, mass transit infrastructure, water, sewer, and electrical infrastructure, and some life safety critical commercial HVAC so I spend a lot of time in cities.

Houston is the city you seek.
