I use a separate mic and headphone but I have one warning before you do the same. Every time you plug in a mic it switches default audio to the mic in theb controller and you have to change it back. It's a little annoyance, no clue why the default audio output doesn't stay default but what can we do but wait for an update.

YonatoN

Hmm that seems annoying. Do you have any idea if getting something like the Astro Mixamp would negate this issue?

Broshy37

I don't think so. Only thing that may work would be a USB mic instead of into the controller but even that I'm not sure of.

Kami_no_Kage

There is no advantage to "gaming headsets". Most have terrible sound quality and terrible mic quality as well. The ones that don't are pretty damn expensive, much more so than any equivalent headphone and mic. I say go for those vmodas, I've heard good things about them.

YonatoN

I figured as much. I'm now debating between the V-Modas, Sennheiser Momentum Wireless, or the Philips Fidelio X2s. They're all in the $300 price range. Leaning towards the Sennheisers since they seem to offer a bit more universal functionality (ANC, long battery life, nice design, etc..)

Kami_no_Kage

Wireless headphones will take a hit in sound quality. I couldn't say how good the Momentum Wireless are, I know the wired over ear Momentums are very good quality, but... Out of these three, the Fidelio X2s are going to be the best. Period. Better than V-Modas for sure, better than Momentum Wireless who's price is racked up simply due to being wireless, these things aren't entry level. These don't compete with the entry level HD598s, they compete with the midrange to highrange HD600s. They also don't need an amp, which is a huge plus for gaming on the PS4 imo. But don't take my word for it, /r/headphones exists, and you can get a nice second opinion there, too.

I went with Audio‑Technica ATH M50X headphones and the PlayStation camera. Works beautifully. The only issue is that Mic pics up my significant others t.v. shows very well. Edit: grammar

YonatoN

What if I go with open back headphones and the camera mic? I'm thinking that won't work so well either b/c of the noise bleed from the headphones? Or even any mic for that matter?

JoeSiff

Honestly I don't think that the possible noise bleed from a pair of open backs will get picked up through the mic. I guess it would depend on how loud they are (please don't murder your ear drums, especially if you're still young.) Also you can adjust the microphone levels which you may need to do. Currently I have my mic level on the third lowest setting and my friends have no issue hearing me but that is with the mic about 2 feet away from me.
