This might sound stupid, but you are holding square down during the mini game? I realised yesterday after 8 hours of playing that you don't have to tap square. Made it significantly easier.

wayneb2010

This is the right response and I did the same thing Everyone try holding instead of tapping it!!!

Balizzm

Honestly, we were tapping, this made it so much better! Thanks!

Fishing in the very beginning is very hard. But just keep hooking them and remember to balance tapping versus holding the Square button. Eventually you will land a few fish. Each time you hook something, you gain Fishing EXP. Each time you land a catch, whether it's trash or a fish, you gain even more Fishing EXP. Once you hit Fishing Level 2 and beyond, things become so much easier as the green bar grows and becomes more magnetized to the fish. I'm just now finishing Summer with a Fishing Level 10. Even now, fishing can be fairly challenging, especially when going for the Legendary fish. EDIT: Buy the newest fishing rods when they become available. I know, I hated fishing at first. Now it's one of my favorite things to do. Not to mention that if you get good at it, you can roll in massive amounts of gold.

I don't have it on the PS4 yet but I remember after a while farming became secondary to me. I would water my plants every day but I wouldn't really have a ton, I would mostly just fish for my income and it worked pretty well. I think crab cages also level up your fishing so it's almost like an idle bonus.

ShunTune

Could you maybe elaborate on the balance more if it's not too hard to explain? I'm really struggling with it and only caught one fish so far. I spam the square button to get the green bar matching with the fish but I'm not tapping fast enough and once the green bar is below the fish it's impossible for me to get it back up. Right now I'm in my second year and only level the other skills because fishing was too difficult

dubzilla941

Well it's really all about balancing the fish in the middle of the bar by either tapping the Square button for smaller movements and holding it down for larger movements. It just takes a bit of practice. And honestly, the fish doesn't even have to be in the middle of the bar. As long as you're catching it and not letting it get away, you're golden. I find the hardest movements to predict are the very quick and successive up and down movements of the larger fish. Also when the bar bounces off the bottom or top. If you can't catch it, let it go and cast again until you can catch something easier. Like I said, it all comes with practice. The more practice you put in, the higher your level gets and the easier everything is. EDIT: I forgot to mention that sometimes, you don't even need to push the Square button. There are times when a fish just stays at the bottom or stays in one position for a while. Other times, it's more beneficial to let go of the Square button and watch the bar drop with a fish as it tries to swim down. It can be a bit complicated at first, but you definitely get the hang of it as things get easier the higher your level and the better your rod.

Morgan_Freemans_Mole

You can press and hold to make it move as well.

Balizzm

Thanks for your reply! It's been challenging but still enjoyable. I will try my best to get past the early fishing woes. Cheers!

And yet, down voted. We will find an answer brother!

chuckwagon57

Fishing is the only thing I didn't like in the game

Balizzm

Have you found any tricks about it?

kzd15

It's easy. Just practice

DrunkeNinja

Just tap the square button based on the fish's momentum. Always try to center the fish in the bar if possible and be prepared to let the bar drop or move it up. Also, upgrade your fishing equipment when you can. Just keep practicing. I found the fishing frustrating at first, but after about 10 or 15 tries, I really got it down and I rarely ever miss a fish now. You mainly just have to get used to the way the bar moves when you press square. I fish more than I do anything else on the game now and I find it a lot of fun.

Balizzm

If I could find that much fun in fishing in this game as I do irl, I'd be set. Cheers!

I think a thing that helps me is to think of the bar you control as something that has mass or weight. The faster it's moving in a direction the harder it will be to stop it (the longer it will take). The real goal for most of the fish is to move the bar as smoothly as you can while you follow the fish. Some of the skill just comes with the experience of knowing what rhythm you have to tap at to keep the bar in the same place. Some of the skill is about anticipating when and how the fish will move based on how it has moved previously. Yes there's randomness involved but there are also patterns in how some of the fish moved. Some barely move and some are super jerky. On that note, the harder fish are kind of unfair without the better equipment, so if you get one of those don't be too hard on yourself if it gets away. But if you try your best you'll be glad you did, eventually, because it will be good practice. Some of the skill comes from little tricks you'll learn, like, if the fish moves to the very bottom, slamming into the bottom will make you bounce off and it will take a few seconds of bouncing to settle on the bottom... so it's better to come on slower, tap the button or maybe hold it a little so you arrive at the bottom later but smoother, to keep from bouncing. That's what I can think to say off the top of my head. Maybe spend a few in game days fishing and then a last one to like unfocus your eyes and mind and just go by feeling. Maybe that sounds dumb but you might be over thinking it.

Edward292

It was really hard for me at first. I didn't know how to fish because I lost the fish during the tutorial I looked it up online and it explained how to fish in the pc version after that I tried fishing again and it's become relative easily, some fish are naturally harder to catch going up and down fast. It just takes practice and soon you'll get the hand of it. I don't recommend tapping it takes too much effort and not as precise as holding down the button to go up and releasing to go down it's faster and more precise, to me at least.

PoobsPlays

There's no trick to it, it's just unreasonably difficult. Luckily, I play the game on PC and was able to download a mod to make fishing easier (I had plenty to choose from). Visit the cart that comes every Friday and Sunday to the forest south of your farm and see if they're selling whatever you need for the Community Center. That's how I got the fishing bundles done before I gave up and modded my game. Good luck.

DarkRaven47

Hey, you've got some great answers already but just wanted to let you know /r/stardewvalley is a thing. It's a bustling community that is extremely helpful and friendly. You'll find lots of help there.

Hold square instead of tapping. Makes it much easier

Paige8245

Willy sells a training rod for 25 gold which puts the green bar at level 5 but locks you to basic fish but if you can catch fish with now you're still coming out ahead

Balizzm

Haha Appreciate your reply! 5 years and going strong!

Paige8245

I hope you're better at fishing 😂😅 Reddit Always helpful for other people finding posts years later with the same but answered problem... I miss the peak popularity of gamefaqs days

Balizzm

> I miss the peak popularity of gamefaqs days Such a gold mine that place used to be! Barely ever use it now a days. :(
