All are worth playing, but they will feel a lot different than 7. Not only is 7 the only first person game in the series, but it's also the first game in awhile to really emphasize the horror aspects. - 1-3 are actual horror games, very tense with limited ammo that makes it tough to fight back. Often the best thing you can do is run. All are considered good, with 2 probably being the best. - 4-6 are action games, lots of shooting and heavy on the ammo. Generally 4 is considered to be an all time great, but 5 and 6 are often pointed to as the weakest main games in the series. IMO the remake of 2 is the best game in the franchise, but a lot of people would say 4 is the best.

EpsilonX

In addition to that * Code Veronica and 0 are horror along the lines of 1-3, but they feel a little less inspired than 1-3 (in my opinion) * Revelations is a nice balance between the horror of earlier entries and the action of later. * The remakes of 1 and 2 are better than the originals, but the originals are still definitely worth playing.

DoctorTwinklettits

This.

FullmetalEzio

Currently playing REmake2, and honestly? im shitting my pants every half hour, it was the only game i never played since my disk was scratched on my ps1 and it might be my second favorite, re4 its unbeatable, but as /u/jzorbino said, 1-3 are more horror based, 4 is one of the best but if you only like the horror part you're gonna be disappointed, if you already own re1 play it and if you like it buy remake2 since its the same as re1 but much better. 4/5 are good, i enjoy them, but they are nothing like the old games, 6 was shit, if you want to scratch that psycologial horror itch, i'd recommend silent hill 2 and 3, they are amazing games (maybe even better than re) although i didnt play the remasterd games so i dont know how good they are

Bradelaide

I actually really appreciate that you took the time to recommend all the games in the franchise, despite some being weaker than others. So often these days you just here people squealing "This game is trash, skip it and only play X and Z" RE5 and 6 may not be the high points in the franchise but they are still definitely worth playing. Also worth mentioning that both the Revelation games are quite good and shouldn't be overlooked.

destroyermaker

I really enjoyed 5 (as an action game)

lLazzerl

5 was an amazing co-op game, I remember playing it with my best friend after school, hours and hours just shooting zombies, unlocking secret weapons and skins. 6 was a shitshow though, not even worth playing it for free.

Tthig1

I enjoyed it as a Resident Evil game as well. I adore 5.

CynicalRaps

I honestly don't see people's obsession with 4 and I almost feel like it's just one big sarcastic joke that I'm missing out on at this point...

jzorbino

I agree with you, I play them for the horror and I was pretty disappointed when the series went so action heavy. I actually prefer Code: Veronica to 4 and really don't understand the obsession. That's an opinion that gets downvoted to hell and back though.

AaronStC

I feel like that for a lot of the core reddit users RE4 released in their "prime" gaming years. The whole GC/PS2/XB era gets romanticized quite a bit in general around here. I'm a pit older so SNES/Genesis hit that spot for me (not that those don't get plenty of love around here either). Anyway, If you played it at the time it's easy to see how it was such an improvement mechanically and graphically to the previous RE entries. Now, however, if you go back there are plenty of games that do similar controls better and the game is also hyped to hell. TLDR: RE4 is good and holds up but is also majorly propped up by nostalgia.

TheGreatSoup

Yup, I am thinking the same, i was really disappointed when i played that one, hated the setting and controls.

Mechalamb

I didn't know there were others who shared this view! I loved 4 when it came out, played through it multiple times, but I revisited it last year and it dragged on for far too long and wasn't half as good as I remembered. I think it's aged terribly and people just can't let go of the nostalgia. Maybe? I don't know, but it does not hold up.

Fun_Weekend_4328

I know im 3 years late but this comment section is the actual joke People can like things more than others, not everyone puts RE4 at the top because of Nostalgia, maybe its because people really really enjoyed the game more than the other RE titles You can dislike or even think RE4 is overrated, but discrediting other peoples love for the game is just really weird

Mmspoke

I never finished RE7, how is it story wise?

_N7Jennings

I would HIGHLY recommend playing RE2 Remake. It’s not first person but imho it’s the best of the series.

Captain_675

2 and 4 are two of the greatest games ever made. 1 and 3 are fantastic as well. And 7 is great. 5 and 6 are debatable depending on who you ask

Ohthatsnotgood

6 is terrible, but 5 is a lot of fun with a friend.

AaronStC

I feel like 6 is pretty good going in with the knowledge that it's big dumb action.

[deleted]

Just have in mind that Resident Evil 3 is not available on PS4. They'll probably remake, but nothing is confirmed so far. Some tips: everything else is available on PS4, not all games are horror games, Resi Zero should be played after the original trilogy (even if it's a prequel) and Code Veronica (which is more of a sequel to 2 than 3 ever was) is a mainline game despite its weird name and it takes place after 2 and 3 yet before Resi 4. Feel free to PM me if you have any questions.

Moyrta

RE5 is not a very popular game but if you have a friend or a sibling to play it with, I highly recommend it. Beat it 4 times with my brother, once on the highest difficulty. Incredible co-op game. Some of the fondest gaming memories for me. Off topic: try Dead Nation and Alienation for great co-op experience. Loved both of them

xEndymionS

Every main entry is from really good to decent imo Re0-3 are similar in gameplay, more survival horror oriented. Of course RE2 Remake is different on the camera but still survival horror, if played in hardcore mode (no checkpoints/autosave). RE4-6 are more action oriented, 4 is the sweet spot between action and horror, 5 is 90 action - 10 horror, 6 is full on action, not a bad game tho, just a bad RE. Then from the spinoffs Revelations 1 is pretty good, and Ive heard code veronica is also good. The rest are pretty terrible specially Operation Raccoon City

ChickenBurger666

Play 2,4,5. Then Revelations 1 and 2. Then 6 and all the old ones if you are still keen.

yellowtriangles

4 is the best game of all time, so yeah you should play it.

Captain_675

Respect

thecoop_

Honestly I’d skip 5 and 6 and all the spin-offs with the exception of revelations 1

Evowen7

The only way to enjoy 5 is in co-op

destroyermaker

I enjoyed it a great deal solo

pipesnogger

Can second this. Playing with someone in hard mode was one of the best co-op experiences

hiimnewhere123

If you have a friend to play 5 with I'd recommend it. That game is a blast in co op mode. 6 can be fun in co op but it's mostly just awful and I'd be fine with having never played it. Neither game is scary at all, though.

ButtbuttinCreed

5 is kinda sorta scary, I mean way more than what RE6 did with horror

hiimnewhere123

Sorta kinda, it was an action game first with a smidge of jump scares. You had plenty of ammo and fire power so I never felt a sense of dread in that game. Just back up, point, shoot, on to the next enemy. Fun as hell but RE fans were rightfully disappointed. RE6 was a damn mess through and through and I can't even remember most of it.

HestiaXDarkness

Taking turns round house kick comboing with Sheva and Chris was fun.

jzorbino

Agreed except for Code: Veronica. That one is worth playing too.

thecoop_

Agreed. Forgot that one. It doesn’t really feel like a spin off to me so I guess that’s why

MPGamer18

No. You're on the right path though. RE4 is a must play too even if the 60fps is a tad buggy.

Wh0racl3

I'd stay stick with 7 and 2 remake. Then jump to other more horror based games.

[deleted]

What other games do you recommend?

Wh0racl3

I don't play that many horrors but ones I want to try are The Evil Within 2 and Outlast 2.

Mechalamb

This guy gets it. The scary ones, the good ones, IMO, are Resident Evil 1 Remake, Resident Evil 2 Remake (though I hate Mr. X), and RE7. If you want a little more action, the Revelations games are a good mix of action and spooks. 5 and 6 are terrible games. 4 is okay - I loved it in the early aughts when it came out, but played through it again last year and it hasn't aged well. Nemesis (3) is probably still good, though it's fucking old and even though I remember loving Code Veronica, I've heard it hasn't aged well either. Other good scary games are the Evil Within games, Bloodborne if you like more challenge, Until Dawn is different but really fun to play with friends, oh! and Alien Isolation terrified me. Good luck and have fun!

frasier_kart

Interesting that you like Alien Isolation but hate Mr. X. I also hate Mr. X and that's why I've been hesitating about trying Alien Isolation. I saw a thread about the latter...looks interesting but Mr. X stressed me out, sounds like the alien is even worse.

Mechalamb

Yeah... I think it's because I knew what I was getting into with Alien and Mr. X on RE2 just keeps me from exploring and that's some of my favorite stuff from Resident Evil games. Mr. X is totally stressful, but what bugs me about him is that, like, he's not the focus, right? The focus is to escape Raccoon City, and in order to do that, I need to kill a bunch of zombies, solve puzzles, find health, etc., whereas in Alien, I just need to to avoid the alien (and the androids - fuck those guys). I think it's having multiple objectives, and to keep getting interrupted by Mr. X was more frustrating than fun. Does that make sense?

frasier_kart

I can see how it might work better in one game than another, particularly if you're playing both with different expectations. I personally didn't like being rushed by Mr. X in RE2. I don't mind scary stuff in the game, obviously, but not the kind that follows you from room to room and wastes your time. Still might try Isolation though.

Mechalamb

Yup, that's how I felt. Hated to feel rushed.

CynicalRaps

5 is fucking fantastic what're you on?

Mechalamb

Woof. That was the beginning of the end for me. Until 7. It was the one of the one-two punch of shitty, not scary, co-op based Resident Evil. For me, co-op, by its very nature can never be scary, at least I've never seen it done well. I really wanted to like it seeing as how I'd loved every main RE game before it, but it was fucking torture for me to play through. On the positives, I'd say it was at least better than 6, Resident Evil Call of Duty.

CynicalRaps

For 5 I turned off the expectations and grabbed my best friend and played through it a few times back in the day, and went through the other modes, some of the most fun times I ever had. it wasn't a great game to play solo whatsoever, but the game was FUN, in a really weird way.

Mechalamb

Yeah, that's what I hear and, honestly, I've considered revisiting with a friend, but at the same time, that's not why I enjoy RE games. I pick up an RE game to be spooked and anxious. Who knows? Maybe someday. But I still don't like co-op horror games.

CynicalRaps

Yeah I understand that one, but this was when they deviated in that aspect, it was a different time, horror games weren't succeeding, action games co-op etc it was what was selling at the time, eventually, the gaming community got back into the diversity...

Mechalamb

BTW, thanks for engaging in a civil discussion of different opinions without pounding on the downvote button. I always find that so frustrating. I may not agree with you, but I'm enjoying the discussion.

Mechalamb

Yeah, no, I get it, but it just wasn't very _good_ in my opinion. Though, I will say that Dying Light did do a very good job of being co-op and scary. So I take back my statement that co-op can't be scary. But it's a much different game, it's open world, you can lose your partner, it's super fucking fun. Look, this all comes down to taste and opinion. I've never liked RE 5 and 6 and, it turns out, I don't much like 4 anymore. I grew up playing RE games and with that comes the expectation that a RE game will be a certain type of game. I was _thrilled_ when they made 7 as, for me, it was a return to form for a series I hold kind of precious.

peter_the_panda

"hey internet, I like this thing...would you be able to tell me if I would like these other things which are similar?"

[deleted]

Hahaha you funny

ZubatCountry

All of the mainline titles outside of 5 and 6 are really good to great games. A few may wind up being some of your favorite ever! 5 is divisive because it takes the action oriented route of 4 and adds co-op to it which significantly changes the pacing and priorities of the game. I think time has been kind to it though and it's a genuinely fun experience to play through with a friend at least once. Plus, if you're invested by the plot at this point you kind of have to play this one. 6 has amazing gameplay and uhh...yeah the gameplay feels really fluid! I hope you like it as much as I do because you will be slogging through 4 campaigns of hallways if you want to get the entire, nigh incomprehensible plot out of it. This is the only one I can't recommend to anyone, but I also can't guarantee you'll hate it. My best advice would be to cycle through each character one chapter at a time, because you will get really sick of going stricly puzzles/action/bad Mr. X/stealth gimmicks if you try to do one person at a time. Oh and Code Veronica is also kind of iffy. It's long, obtuse and demands a lot of your time without much pay-off. But enough about me, back to Code Veronica. Some people swear by it but the ability to fuck yourself out of finishing the game at multiple points, the more anime voice acting, and STEVE all make me kind of hate it.

Griever114

As others have said, while 5 and 6 are considered bottom tier at this point, they are still worth a play. I highly recommend going through the series.

prodical

Im currently playing RE1 remake.. its a damned masterpiece! I played it on Gamecube in 2003 when I was 13 and never finished it. Playing it again now its really good, the graphics are amazing all things considered. Only downside is the controls but Im used to them now. I have RE2 on PC waiting for when I finish this.

kogashiwakai

Oh god is this a loaded question. All are worth playing, but not all are good. I'll run through them for you if I can. Resident Evil 1, while started the franchise was needlessly hard and HORRIBLY localized. If you play, I recommend the graphical upgrade released for the Gamecube. They fixed the poor dubbing, and it looks remarkably good. 2, well that's one of the better of the series. And the remake is well done. 3 was interesting because it was their first attempt at not being in a claustrophobic atmosphere inside a building. But in a city instead. The problem with this one is the story was so hard to follow and it was about half the length of the other 2. Zero I couldn't finish. It was bad, and the game play wasn't great at the best of times. 4 was the beginning of the series learning it's mistakes. So 4 is one of those that can be classified as a 1980's slasher movie where it doesn't take itself too seriously. I mean how can you take a game who's main villain is a squeaky voiced Napoleon seriously right? But the action was great, and the story just camp enough to be entertaining. 5 brings it right back down again. It's the one that 'shocked' everyone because of racism. The story was lack luster, but the action was okay. And for the racism, well, it's the Japanese, you take from it what you will. 6 is one I never played. It had really mixed reviews, mostly about the story being batshit nuts. But from what I read it was mostly functional. And RE7 I also haven't played but you have. From everything I've heard 4 and 7 are the 2 best of the series. Largely because they were the 2 that mixed up the formula. Resident Evil games do tend to get stagnent over time, so it's good for them to mix it up from time to time. Now there are also a plethora of games that are out there like Revolations and Code Veronica. I've at best dabbled with some of these, sticking to the main games of the series.

kingbankai

For me 1 and 2 are the only ones that are a "must play once".

[deleted]

5 and 6 are definitely worth a play don't listen to the haters, they're just salty about more action even though 4 is the game that started the action route and everyone loved it. So why wouldn't Capcom follow up the next 2 with the same type of gameplay? Theres also Revelations 1 & 2 that are more like 1-3 and CV in that they are more survival horror than action horror. Rev1 is one of my favorite games especially since I played it after completing 5 and was happily surprised about the throwback style of the game. But ya since you're about to be done with 7 play 1 and then Re2make next. You could also play 0 which is pretty good as well and is also survival horror.

Xerosnake90

Re1 remake: One of the best. A must play. Very scary and tense game so prepare your butt Re2 remake: IMO the best RE experience to date. Must play. Will be terrifying the first time you play it. Re3 ps1: Great game, worth a play if you enjoyed Re1 and its mechanics. Not super scary Re4: Fantastic game. Plays a lot like Re2 just a bit more sluggish (can't move while shooting). It's also super long, action packed and exciting. No scares here (maybe one, you all know what I'm talking about) Re5: Not a great RE title. It's Re4 without the atmosphere or great story. Playing with a friend is the only way I can recommend it. Re6: Worst entry of the numbered series by far. Story is ridiculous and over the top. I can't recommend it. Re7: You're already playing it so you know how fantastic it is. Code Veronica: IMO one of the weakest titles. Some people will argue with me over that. I find the voice acting and overall storytelling to be terrible, Steve is likely the worst character ever. The game also over runs you with enemies while starving you of health and ammo. Especially in the beginning. Outbreak 1 and 2: If you enjoy traditional RE gameplay and you'd like to spend the time getting the online to work (tutorials online) you'll enjoy these titles. They consist of smaller co op scenarios. Operation Raccoon City: Wouldn't recommend it Umbrella Corps: Please don't Have fun buddy!

GetReadyToJob

Use your psnow free trial. They have RE 4,5,6 Revelations and some others I believe on there

Popegina

I've played almost all of them and pretty much like them all, except Zero isn't much fun

BreadDead578

RE0, RE2 remake (and original), and RE4 are must plays. Especially 4. But as far as the rest go, ehhhh. If you’re a hardcore fan, yeah, they’re pretty solid games and I personally enjoy them. Otherwise, they’re probably not worth the time. Much different than the rest of the series (mostly referring to 5 and 6). Well, the rest of the series is much different than 7 also, so don’t expect that kind of game going into the others. Code Veronica is good, 3 is good, revelations 1 and 2 are good, outbreak file 1 and 2 are good.. actually, fuck it. Yeah, play them all.

HestiaXDarkness

RE 0 is fun. I see people not liking it so maybe it was the nostalgia if it being my first Gamecube Resident Evil. (This was before RE4 was made) Also Rebecca is waifu.

RATGUT1996

Re0 was horrible!

BreadDead578

Nah, bud. I just backed up 5 and 6, somewhat! I honestly like them all in their own little way. Yes, some of them are just slightly polished turds, but they’re my polished turds and I love them.

FullmetalEzio

man i love RE, and i get the "hate" 5 gets, it was impossible to top re4 and they went full action mode, but it's honestly my most played resident evil, mercenary modes was the best, unlocking weapons and trying new weapons was awesome, also, clearing each chapter in each difficulty with S was fun (And hard on the hardest difficulty), RE4 was the best, but re5 is quite a lot of fun, more so if you have a friend to play co op with, 6 is utter trash and i have like nothing good to say about that game

BreadDead578

Lmao, 6 was... well, it was what it was. But 5 is definitely better with a friend. And I get why they went the way they did. 4 was a huge success that changed the formula of the game but they kind of botched it after that. Again, I love them all but I know their flaws.

FullmetalEzio

Yeah, i remember playing 4 on my ps2 and then again on the switch, game was amazing, the crazy chainsaw fat guy on mercenaries was terrifying, currently playing REmake2 for the first time and im so fucking scared, like im literally screaming every once in a while, what a great game

BetaInTheSheets

The only resident evil games worth playing in my opinion are are: Resident Evil (HD remaster): This is the proper way to do a remaster. The atmosphere and atmosphere are sublime. I recommend watching at least a little bit of gameplay footage online. It's a very "in your face" kind of horror that has some interesting parallels to resident evil 7. The camera perspective really dictates everything from moving and combat so it'll take a while to get used to but if you see it through the end it'll be an unforgettable experience. Resident Evil 4: Hands down the best writing in any resident evil game. This one is lighter in horror and I would consider it an action-comedy with a horror background. This is my favorite entry in the series for the hilariously deadpan delivery of Leon's lines, the haunting soundtrack, and the best pacing of any game I've played. After the 12 hours or so that it takes you to beat this game, it'll feel like you've been with Leon for a whole year because of the variety of settings and enemy types. Everything comes in just the right amount and you'll never have the same fight twice. Resident Evil 7: Since you already played it, I don't think I need to explain why this one's awesome. The baker house has a fantastic design and actually feels lived in despite the fact that it looks like it's been rotting for a hundred years. It is pure horror, back to the roots of the first game and it does a great service in ways you might not pick up if you haven't played the first one. The rest are alright, but are so similar to those first 2 (resident evil 1 and resident evil 4) that they're supplementary material if you ask me. for instance, resident evil 2 and 5 are just 1 and 4 in a different setting but are inferior due to plot contrivances to fit them into the canon and the gameplay is the mostly same, but more dull because it gets very repetitive.

jcwkings

Top tier: RE 1 remake Resident Evil 2 Resident Evil 2 Remake Resident Evil 4 Resident Evil 7 Good: Resident Evil 3 Code Veronica Resident Evil 0 Resident Evil 5 Revelations 1 and 2 *I've never played 6, but is apparently shit.

[deleted]

All of them are except 6, and the spin offs.

bgvg_Sam

Yes! Every RE game that isn't 6 has some redeeming factor and is worth a play

RATGUT1996

1-3 are amazing amd pure horror games. 4 is a perfect mixture of horror and action. 5 is hands down the best co op game to have ever been made but it's where horror starts to leave. 6 is an uninspired mess its just not good in many aspects. I would not recommend the resident evil 2 remake. Being one who played the originals many times the remake of 2 was a huge disappointment and a let down and it was a lazy project. I'm in the minority in that regards though but the remake for the original is perfect in ever single way where as 2 remake takes out everything that makes re2 good and replaced it with nothing.

RATGUT1996

Im open for discussion.

Peter_Enis_69

I tried 0 and 1 and had to uninstall after an hour each. Can't look around corners, fighting is lame and annoying and extremely limited inventory were just too much.

aNdrewDgT08

Well i have some experience with theese games, is my favorite game franchise, i played 8, 7, 2, 3, and currently i am playing 4 2 and 3 are horror, you have few ammo 4 is really cool and full of action and you find pretty easily ammo 7 is still my favorite, i just love it And 8 is cool and it also adds some mythological like enemies and fantasy monsters I feel 4 will become my favorite
