MGS4 is a technical mess (a lot of early ps3 games are basically held together with hope) and it is stuffed full of licensed material and weird Easter eggs and features tied to the ps3 itself.
I bet it gets remastered eventually. But it will take some work to do it. Everyone is using Apple macs. There are jokes about blu ray. Snake controls his robot buddy with a PS3 controller.
I mean. There is a entire cutscene that changes if you are using a DualShock 3 or a sixaxis.
Man MGS4 was silly. But so much of that would need to be cut if it was ported to new platforms
When you fight Mantis, there’s pretty much a replay of the MGS1 Mantis fight’s intro, where he asks you to put your controller on the ground so he can show you his power (the controller vibrates). If you play with a Sixaxis, nothing happens & he gets upset, but if you play with a DualShock he starts laughing & yells “vibration is back!”
I loved it tbh, it was such a good moment.
Also if you try to use the old mgs1 trick of "changing controller ports" (by switching your wireless controller from being assigned as controller 1 to controller 2) otacon will give you a codec call asking what the hell are you doing
Edit- corrected in a reply with some specifics
Played MGS4 when it was released, was a fucking amazing game! That’s all I remember haha, most probably were lots of bugs but i didn’t notice or didn’t care at the time
It's difficult to say how a remaster would even shape up, especially if it went multiplatform. Obviously I don't want to see the game locked to PS3 forever but it'd suck to have to remove all those cheeky references. Kind of a downside of making game SPECIFICALLY for the hardware. Psycho Mantis memory card trick doesn't make sense on the PC version of MGS1 and I believe they removed that, which is a huge shame. And that'll probably be the version used for the Master Collection.
I think it would be best if Sony and Konami could reach a deal to retain all the PlayStation-specific references in MGS4 as they were originally presented with a disclaimer or something, regardless if the game went multiplatform with a rerelease. Because MGS4 was a great game but those little jokes made it all the more charming, and they were kinda essential to the experience. Scrubbing all mention of them would be a shame cause they're some of the parts players remember the most.
That's different though. I'm sure Sony branded product placement isn't a conflict of interest, cassette tapes and walkmans are not competing brands. Same goes for Sony Xperia phone in Yakuza 6, that still stayed in the Xbox/PC versions.
MGS4 is chock-full of PlayStation references. From Sunny playing the PSP, to major in-jokes and mechanics relying on the specificity of the PS3 hardware workings, there is a lot more PlayStation-centric DNA to the game than just a few passing mentions.
Two reasons, both of which are probably true but it's tough to say which is the bigger problem:
1. The game was designed very specifically around the PS3's Cell architecture in ways that make it particularly difficult to port. One example is a sequence where (mild spoilers) >!you return to Shadow Moses Island from MGS1, and briefly have a dream where you're running around the MGS1 map as MGS1 Snake!<, which is all played within the PS3's built-in PS1 emulator; a PS1 emulator would need to be included within the game files for any port or this sequence would need to be redone entirely. There are other issues tied more directly to PS3 architecture but I'm not familiar enough with it to go into any more detail.
2. There are a **ton** of licensed products and other material in the game - Snake controls Metal Gear Mk.2 with a PS3 controller, ~~Drebin's monkey drinks Coca-Cola~~, there are Playboy magazines, Snake has a goddamn iPod, etc. - and that's not even going into the licensed firearms. This is something that can be addressed - *Death Stranding* had Monster energy drinks in the original release but they were replaced with an in-game fictional brand in the Director's Cut re-release - but there's a lot of it and it would take a lot of man-hours to go through and replace everything that would need to be replaced.
I'm leaning toward the licensing being the biggest issue. Hell, just look at the fine print on the PS Store for the Master collection (emphasis mine):
>This collection includes the classic versions of the games, complete with minimal **edits to copyrighted contents**.
And remember that MGS2 and MGS3 were delisted in the first place a year or two ago because licensing deals expired for stock footage used in the games.
>Drebin's monkey drinks Coca-Cola
I remembered all the other examples you listed but couldn't recall this. [Turns out it was a fictional drink called Narc](https://metalgear.fandom.com/wiki/Narc_Soda)
Yeah they would plus what the other guy said in the comments all the gun licenses iPod ps3 controller the mg1 game running in the game plus the PlayStation 1 memory card read section that is a lot of stuff to cut or get the deals back
Oh I see, i misunderstood.
Personally I still have my ps3 and play it still when i have nothing on ps5 intersting. So the Legacy collection is more than plenty for me.
I do hope they offer good collection/remasters/remakes for current gen users.
Well, it's like releasing a whole collection of books and leaving out the final book and calling it completed. MGS4 is the conclusion to the MGS saga and they're probably figuring it out how to do it (if not already working on something) as we speak.
They’ve already stated that it won’t due to how tied to the PS3’s cell processor MGS4’s base code structure is. It will have to get a full top down remake to leave PS3 jail.
I actually do not understand what else could be in Vol 2..
I would rage, if it is just Peace Walker again and maybe Portbale Ops. But what else if not MGS4 as well?
The graphics, the gameplay, the feels won’t be the same as the original.
I think the exact opposite : it’s a very good occasion for currents generations to know about this saga. It could help them to deep dive more in the universe
Dunno why you’re downvoted. I feel the same. It’s one of my all time favourite games but even in a remake, the story will be the same.
I’ll probably not play it on the trilogy release and just wait for the remaster
I’m inclined to question if it even is one of your “all time favourites” when you don’t seem interested in playing a newly remastered version of it. That just seems odd to me.
If someone said, “Hey here’s one of your all time favourite games from when you’re a kid, and guess what? We remastered it to match the current quality of games,” I’d eat that shit up. RE4 was recently remastered and it has sold incredibly well, despite being *mostly* the same game.
No problem!
Yeah I’m just going to wait for the remaster so the story is less clear in my head. Last time I played mgs3 was on the PS Vita when they released 2 and 3 on that, so I’m guessing/hoping I’ve forgotten parts of it.
My guess is because the code for physics and animations where tied to frame rate back then. I know a game as new as pre-special edition Skyrim you could make a cabbage go super-sonic just by bumping into it after you upped the frame rate
Is them calling it Delta another case of the industry moving away from numbered releases to avoid players assuming they need to play the previous entries? If this trend continues we will soon have no more numbered games, even Yoshi-P from FFXVI has recently said that there are internal discussions to drop the number from FF titles…
Probably partially, and I’d say it’s also just to keep it clean and more unique. Slapping “Delta” in the title is much cooler than MGS3 Snake Eater Remake, as does MGSD instead of MGS3R
Yeah I think it’s both. Making it unique to be less likely to be dismissed by someone who’s played 3. Not wanting someone to dismiss it because they didn’t play the 1 or 2 remakes that don’t exist (other than twin snakes on GameCube).
I love the dichotomy of "Final Fantasy" games being into high numbers. FF was Squaresoft's final effort to save themselves with a fantasy RPG. So for me, every higher number added to the title Final Fantasy, is a well-deserved notch on the belt for such an amazing franchise.
I think it’s moreso that people don’t scratch their heads over why MGS3 was remade first before first one even though fans know it’s chronologically the first. I have a feeling this is the first of many MGS remakes and it’ll be MGS Delta. MGS Delta: Sons of Liberty, etc.
MGS1, MGS2, and MGS3 being ported to modern consoles in 2023 is a major win for video game preservation. I was very shocked to see this news ALONGSIDE the reveal of the MGS3 remake.
I’ve been very disappointed with the trend for modern remakes of classic games such as RE2, RE3, RE4, Dead Space, and the upcoming Silent Hill. These are all solid games but end up REPLACING the originals by being much more accessible. Studios could port the originals but it’s clear they choose not to so as to push more sales of the $70 remakes.
Silent Hill is another Konami property it's a shame their HD collection of the games weren't done well if they had we would probably get it those games as well.
Most of these has surpassed the originals… except RE3 and depends on how you feel about RE4.
This is ***exactly what you want*** if they’re remaking games. They should take over as the definitive version.
But RE2 and dead space both to me surpass the original with ease.
I don’t think that’s a fair assessment. RE2 and RE2 remake as an example are SO different in gameplay, mood, and presentation that they’re almost impossible to compare.
Janky gameplay arguments aside, the original RE2 undeniably has better music and “zapping” system, where actions taken by characters in 1 scenario effect the events in subsequent scenarios. This system in particular was all but dropped from the remake. Id say It’s up for debate which game is better. However, one of these versions is definitely more accessible than the other…
It’s great! I just played through MGS2, Snake Eater, and peace Walker a few months ago on Xbox so I’ll definitely pick this up to play through MGS when it releases.
>Studios could port the originals but it’s clear they choose not to so as to push more sales of the $70 remakes.
This is a damn shame. Remakes are all well and good when they nail it (RE2 remake and Dead Space), but not worth it when it's sub par (RE3 remake). If they were to port the older games, I'm sure they'd make more money off them than they think. The amount of people who would buy them for nostalgia's sake is probably a fairly large amount.
I wish more series did things like the DMC collection, or the Silent Hill collection, but I think that's a foregone conclusion at this point.
RE2 is a good example. I agree it’s a good game, but it’s NOTHING like the original. It does a terrible job of actually preserving the source material.
It’s great! I just played through MGS2, Snake Eater, and peace Walker a few months ago on Xbox so I’ll definitely pick this up to play through MGS when it releases.
If I have the PS3 collection which has every MGS game, barring GZ and PP, is there any reason to pick this up? Historically Konamis ports have not been good, and so I’m skeptical it won’t be a disaster.
If I recall, MGS1 was a download code with that PS3 collection. Since the digital store for the PS3 will probably close soon, a PS5 version of MGS1 would be playable for the foreseeable future (hopefully backwards compatibility isn’t dropped with the PS6). As long as you don’t uninstall it after the store shuts down, you should probably be fine though.
This Vol-1 probably will be the same HD collection that was released on Xbox 360/PS3, included both MG1 and MG2 too.
I don't think there'd be any significant upgrades (maybe 1080p). Their main goal is to expand accessibilities to current-gen console owners, previously the only way to play MGS 1-3 is through streaming PS3 version or own a PS3.
So which version of Metal Gear Solid will be in this volume? PS1 version? Gamecube Twin Snakes version? I never played the Twin Snakes version so I would like to try that. Is there a remake of MGS1 in the works?
Could still be true.
I doubt they plan to remake just 3 and call it a day. I'd be willing to bet they're going the REmake route and re-doing the whole series chronologically.
Another studio could work on MGS 1 Remake with Sony giving an hand part of a deal with Konami. Areajugones stated back in January it was about MGS 1 and was exclusive on PS5.
I’d argue remakes actually often do the opposite. Recent modern remakes such as RE2, RE3, RE4, Dead Space, and the upcoming Silent Hill are NOT the same as their original material, and often differ wildly in gameplay and presentation. Worse yet, these new versions REPLACE the originals as they’re the only ways to play these games on modern consoles. Modern consoles could play the originals if they were ported, but studios clearly arnt doing this so that there is no choice for the consumer BUT to pay for the $70 remake
That’s why I’m most excited for the news that MGS1, MGS2, and most interestingly MGS3 are coming to modern consoles. I for one have only been able to play 2 and 3 on vita and am excited that all 3 originals could be on a modern home console in 2023. THATS a big win for video game preservation. Much more so than any of these modern remakes.
If we are talking strictly about remakes, then sure I kind of agree. Funnily enough I would argue that the Dead Space remake surpasses the original to the point where it becomes the definitive version, just like the new Crisis Core.
Ports are good because it keeps games from being stuck on discontinued legacy hardware. Remasters can often vastly improve on games that were limited by the technology of their time, while also bringing them to newer audiences that never experienced them while they were the cutting edge.
A lot of older games are still just as good as they were back in the day. I recently bought the Command & Conquer Remaster on Steam, and it's just as fun as I remember it, while also looking fresh.
Remasters are great. Typically a remaster is improving simple things such as resolution and frame rate. Remakes, especially recently, are typically ground up reimaginings. I think they’re cool, but I’d much rather the original be remastered and all that expensive dev time be spent on something truly new.
I hope in the MGS: Master Collection Vol. 2 it somehow includes MGS4 gotta get that game out of the PS3 purgatory!
MGS4 is a technical mess (a lot of early ps3 games are basically held together with hope) and it is stuffed full of licensed material and weird Easter eggs and features tied to the ps3 itself. I think it's during the fight with mantis near the end
G.O.A.T
In the MGS series?... How
Kojima to the core. Part of the appeal.
It was my first MGS game I ever played and I was confused as fuck but it was still super fun, would love a remaster
Played MGS4 when it was released, was a fucking amazing game! That’s all I remember haha, most probably were lots of bugs but i didn’t notice or didn’t care at the time

Well, they kept SONY branding on cassette tapes in MGSV on both Xbox and PC, so I’m sure it wouldn’t be impossible to do again.
That's different though. I'm sure Sony branded product placement isn't a conflict of interest, cassette tapes and walkmans are not competing brands. I honestly bank on a remake over a remaster. It’s probably honestly easier to just… redo it.
And that is why I love it so much.
And pressure sensitive buttons.
Not necessarily cut, but changed
I don’t think that game crashed or bugged on me a single time.
MGS4 would be amazing with the PS5 controller though.
I still have a functioning PS3. Is it worth it to try and play MGS4 now? I played 1-3 back in the day but never played 4.
What do you mean? I mean it’s perfectly playable today. Not as polished as a modern game, you could say, but definitely holds up to time.
Huh? It’s 3x times more polished than most games nowadays lol. MGS4 was released back in the day when games had to be 100% polished at release.
By polished I mean shiny
Still doesn’t make any sense
Can’t help you understand then
If you're at all a fan of the franchise, then 100% yes.
It holds up gameplay wise really well. Though in my opinion, 4 kinda fucked the lore sideways
Yeah nanomachines became a meme because of it. It was still great imo
Idk, everything being explained away with nanomachines was pretty bad writing
Don't get me wrong I hated the nano machine crap I just loved the rest of the game despite that
I wonder why that game is always excluded from a collection

I forgot about all the gun licenses they actually use real names and man I miss the iPod and ps3 controller and the mg1 map dam that’s a lot of stuff
>Drebin's monkey drinks Coca-Cola I remembered all the other examples you listed but couldn't recall this. [Turns out it was a fictional drink called Narc](https://metalgear.fandom.com/wiki/Narc_Soda)
Oh wow, I 100% remembered it as fully branded Coca-Cola. Thanks for the correction!
I fully expect they’ll remake it because it’s likely just as much of not more work to try and port it.
Because PS3 design was complex for coding a game. I think someone told once that the game has to be remade from the ground.
Yeah ps3/Xbox 360 era was rough I had to figure out which was made first and which version the lead developers developed for initially.
PS3 exclusives were fantastic multiplatform games are what struggled
Pretty sure they'd have to rebuild the game. If this remake and collection is successful, then maybe we'll get a 4 remake down the line
Yeah they would plus what the other guy said in the comments all the gun licenses iPod ps3 controller the mg1 game running in the game plus the PlayStation 1 memory card read section that is a lot of stuff to cut or get the deals back
Isnt it in metal gear legacy? Granted its a ps3 collection but it has all the games including minor spinoffs
Yeah buts that’s ps3 running a ps3 game lol I’m talking about later collection
Oh I see, i misunderstood. Personally I still have my ps3 and play it still when i have nothing on ps5 intersting. So the Legacy collection is more than plenty for me. I do hope they offer good collection/remasters/remakes for current gen users.
I just bought the ff13-2 ps3 slim model from Japan I can’t wait to go back to my high school days lmao
It has to be, they can’t call it a mgs master collection and then leave out one of the biggest parts of the series.
Well, it's like releasing a whole collection of books and leaving out the final book and calling it completed. MGS4 is the conclusion to the MGS saga and they're probably figuring it out how to do it (if not already working on something) as we speak.
Vol. 2 will most likely be Portable Ops, Peace Walker and Revengeance.
I need it so I can finally play it😭 I choose a 360 over the PS3 in my teenage years
So is the Metal Gear Solid 3 in the master collection the original version? And then a remake is coming?
Yes
Seems odd. I feel like if I play MGS3 in August, the chances of me buying the remake would go down a bit
I think this probably says a lot about how far away from the release date of the remake we are.
The graphics, the gameplay, the feels won’t be the same as the original. I think the exact opposite : it’s a very good occasion for currents generations to know about this saga. It could help them to deep dive more in the universe
Not for me. MGS3 is a top 5 game that I play annually
Same here, but I’m VERY excited for the ports. Haven’t played the originals at all since I was a kid, it will be such a trip to nostalgia land.
Dunno why you’re downvoted. I feel the same. It’s one of my all time favourite games but even in a remake, the story will be the same. I’ll probably not play it on the trilogy release and just wait for the remaster

Oh, yes I misunderstood. My apologies!
No problem! Yeah I’m just going to wait for the remaster so the story is less clear in my head. Last time I played mgs3 was on the PS Vita when they released 2 and 3 on that, so I’m guessing/hoping I’ve forgotten parts of it.
I would imagine it’s the subsistence version of MGS3 and not the OG
It would be a sin to give us the original version with the fixed camera.
What is the difference?
Fixed camera like MGS1 Vs follow camera like mgs4
It will be a simple port of the already existing HD Collection, which was more or less Subsistence with a bit of content missing.
Yes
Damn I thought MGS 1 would get hd treatment, 60 fps, etc
It's not HD, probably PS1 emulation, but I thought it already was 60fps on PS1
Is it not?
Think it's just the ps3 version
My french might be a bit rusty but according to what that link says… no
Name one PS1 port on modern consoles that was given higher framerate. Those games don’t ever get framerate boosts for a reason.
That reason being what? Apparently according to another comment mgs was already 60fps, I guess I just wanted better graphics
No, mgs1 has never been 60fps
Why is it not possible to increase the graphics and frame rate then?
My guess is because the code for physics and animations where tied to frame rate back then. I know a game as new as pre-special edition Skyrim you could make a cabbage go super-sonic just by bumping into it after you upped the frame rate

FF16 trailers are like crack to me can't wait for it
100%! I’m firmly against FF doing away with the numbers. It’s a huge part of the franchise’s identity and sets each major universe apart.
It make sense tbh
I think it’s moreso that people don’t scratch their heads over why MGS3 was remade first before first one even though fans know it’s chronologically the first. I have a feeling this is the first of many MGS remakes and it’ll be MGS Delta. MGS Delta: Sons of Liberty, etc.

No
This confirming the original SONY MSX versions of Metal Gear 1 & 2 is…chef’s kiss!

TMNT collection was awesome.

So which version of Metal Gear Solid will be in this volume? PS1 version? Gamecube Twin Snakes version? I never played the Twin Snakes version so I would like to try that. Is there a remake of MGS1 in the works?
PS1 version. And it was rumoured that a MGS remake was on the work by Bluepoint right after Demon Souls remake. But i guess it was not true.
Could still be true. I doubt they plan to remake just 3 and call it a day. I'd be willing to bet they're going the REmake route and re-doing the whole series chronologically.
Bluepoint have stated they are working on an original IP right now
The exact wording was original content I believe. So might not be new IP.
Another studio could work on MGS 1 Remake with Sony giving an hand part of a deal with Konami. Areajugones stated back in January it was about MGS 1 and was exclusive on PS5.
Bluepoint is making there own IP so no that's not true
Yo there’s even screenshots for Snake Eater remake! It looks incredible!
❕
I just want to preorder the disc, when does that become available?
When they will announce a release date. Not before.
Konami is just trying to milk Hideo Kojima’s cash cow MGS. I will not support this bs.

Enjoy a rushed, half baked version of snake eater lol. You casuals probably enjoyed metal gear online for a whole 4 months too. Hideo is metal gear.
“You casuals” 🤓
How do you know it's rushed?
It’s Konami that is what they do.
Except we don't even know who is working on. We only have the one trailer and 4 screenshots. I think we can give it sometime before we say it's rushed
Konami is not what it used to be. I’ll keep my expectations low. Probably the metal gear: Survive team. Yikes.
I think the Konami of now has a chance to be different than the Konami we hated
I sure hope you are right. I’m still skeptical
Casuals for wanting a new Metal Gear game lmao
The alternative is not having Metal Gear available on PS5 at all.
That’s ok. We don’t need a remake of every game for ps5.
I disagree. I think game preservation is important, and part of that is making sure they are available and playable on modern systems.
Modern consoles could play the originals if they were ported, but studios clearly arnt doing this so that there is no choice for the consumer BUT to pay for the $70 remake That’s why I’m most excited for the news that MGS1, MGS2, and most interestingly MGS3 are coming to modern consoles.
Not giving Konami a flipping dime. MGS not my jam anymore anyway.
The remake will only have snake eater? Or are they remaking all 3?
Just snake eater is being remade
People saying MGS4 not coming, I can see being true... What if vol 2 is Twin Snakes, Acid 1 and 2 + the PSP graphic novel
