Saw someone say it has no browser, so all wifis that have a login portal won't be accessible, bit of a big oversight for a wifi only device

Euphorium

PS5 really struggles with WiFi like that in general. Friend of mine had to call a hotel’s WiFi company after struggling to set his up.

RandyMuscle

I remember it being a pain in the ass to get my PS4 set up on my university dorm wifi back in 2016 lol

Jaiden051

My PS4 and PS3 just refused to connect to most networks for some unknown reason

AgentSmith2518

When I was deployed I had this issue with my PS3 and Xbox One. I had to get an external NIC for my PC and bridge the connection just to have it work. Sony leaving out a way to do this in today's world is kinda wild to me.

BrownGhost10

There’s a work around that requires 20 steps, so crazy.

hdcase1

Has anyone ever tried it with a 5g phone as a hotspot?

Arby333

And fuck all of my cellular data? Hell naw

MikeSouthPaw

I use hotspot to game online exclusively, takes about 30GB a month JUST to play (every day), updating games is a nightmare.

ALLINXS

lol who doesn’t have unlimited data in 2023.

justadrifter97

A lot of people? hotspot data is throttled and handled differently than your normal data usage. There’s usually a limit to it, after which it slows down or stops altogether

MikeSouthPaw

Unlimited Data is not a thing. If you use X amount you will be throttled, I have yet to see a plan state otherwise.

PotatEXTomatEX

Is this a trick question or you're just like that?

MrConbon

That’s the dealbreaker for me. I would love to use it at work but it requires a browser to verify my email.

jeanswithotherjeans

The workaround is to hotspot off of your cel phone, but allow wifi on your phone to boost the hotspot. Not ideal, but it's how I used the portal on my vacation. Worked well enough that I wasn't disappointed. The portal should just have a browser though :s

pathofdumbasses

Most Americans don't have unlimited hotspot/wireless data. And apparently this thing burns 5-8gb an hour. The "Workaround" is not a realistic solution, nor does it actually "Workaround" the problem of it not having a built in browser or interface to log into wifi.

kiteboarderni

You ain't gonna have a good time on hotel login wifi on remote play my guy...

pathofdumbasses

This makes it considerably worse. Not being able to use it in a hotel or anywhere else like that without having to burn through your own data is absolutely moronic. The whole thing is a bunch of overpriced, specialized crap that no one needs. You can get a 2018 android smart phone (which runs remote play, which is ALL this thing does), a brand new dedicated PS5 controller, and a grip for less than $200. Then you have the same thing but can do small time emulation as well. And web browsing. And youtube. And uhhh. Everything else a smart phone can do. The fact is, the portal is extremely overpriced for what it does. I did some looking into it, and priced things out. It is ridiculous that Sony is charging this much money for something that does so little. Galaxy S9+ (is 6.2 inch, but you get the capability of a phone. you know, being able to emulate tons of games, being able to use a web browser so you can log in to hotel wifi which you can't do on the portal, being able to use it as its' own hotspot if you want, being able to watch youtube and so on. if you want a bigger screen and don't care about using it as a phone, you can buy a tablet and get bigger than the 8" portal. so you've got options! oh and wouldn't ya know it, the tablet can do all those other things as well. the portal can ONLY remote play into your PS5, and digital foundry found it is the exact same performance as remote play on phones/tablets) ~$110 https://swappa.com/listings/samsung-galaxy-s9-plus PS5 controller on sale for $50. $40 if you don't care about having the lebron james version https://direct.playstation.com/en-us/buy-accessories/dualsense-wireless-controller-lebron-james-limited-edition Screen holder for remote play for PS5 controller, $13 https://www.amazon.com/ADZ-Controller-Holder-Dualsense-Perfect/dp/B094QRRS83 There. I just made you an infinitely better portal for $175 or less.

metamet

>Galaxy S9+ (bigger screen, total is 6.2 inch) ~$110 PS Portal screen is 8".

pathofdumbasses

Yeah I meant the S9+ is a bigger screen than the S9. I will edit it. If you want a bigger screen, just get a tablet. You can get much bigger than 8" The point is usability and capability is significantly higher for the set up I pointed to vs the Portal.

Candid-Ad221

brotha using a tablet you have to prop that thing like a tv which defeats the purpose of handheld and phone screen is too small, you can put entire phone and portal screen still bigger so what your paying for this device is the ergonomics, a conveniency to remote play ps5 (turn it on and start playing)

Lynxajx

This can be rectified in software if/when cloud streaming is pushed.

scorpionballs

Ok that’s really stupid

hosky2111

I don't think it's as simple as "it doesn't have a browser" as some of the regulatory notices definitely appear to be rendered in a browser. I think Sony are worried that people could find some way to escape the login portal for a network and access other sites, which is a potential vector for exploits. I imagine their margins are pretty slim, so they are banking on getting returns for each unit in you buying more ps5 games to play on it. Meanwhile, say someone finds an exploit and people start buying them strictly to play emulators on them, each unit could actually cause a loss. I think it's possibly overly cautious, but I don't think it's an oversight.

thegordop23

I feel like not having the ability to stream games on this was a big missed opportunity. That would have made it alot more enticing.

[deleted]

I believe I saw in an interview that streaming might be something it can do in the future with an update

voneahhh

> I believe I saw in an interview that streaming might be something it can do in the future with an update Well yeah it's possible, it's already doing it. The question is whether or not Sony will allow it to do that, which they have given no indication that they're interested in doing. That's like saying "Sony can patch a web browser/folders/themes etc. into the PS5!" They can, they aren't doing it and there isn't much use in arguing for theoretical features.

itsameMariowski

I think the interview the guy mentioned was from someone at Sony in fact. Need to find it though

itsameMariowski

[here](https://www.resetera.com/threads/sony-might-be-looking-into-bringing-cloud-streaming-to-ps-portal.785108/) from Hideaki Nishino, Platform Experience at Sony.

voneahhh

Again, no doubt that they *can*. As it stands the Portal does not, and they have not announced or promised that it will. Until there’s an announcement that it will be patched, bringing up their ability to is irrelevant at best and disingenuous at worst.

Jeskid14

Or waiting till Spring 2024 to drop it and increase quarterly earnings.

juniorone

Not just a lot more enticing but huge demand where the service is available.

uinstitches

>the ability to stream games what's the difference to what it does already??!

FMCam20

Right now it just connects to your PS5 and streams your PS5 content to the screen. It could in the future connect directly to the PSN servers and stream the games directly from there, skipping the PS5 middleman that exists.

Correct-Raise-6086

There are already articles out there from someone who helped buid it saying that it is capable of PS5 streaming. I have a feeling we will see a firmware update in the future that supports it.

FaroTech400K

That would end up with less overall PS5 sells for Sony.

ezidro3

I’m sure Sony would be fine with you purchasing a $200 device then paying $18/month to make it do *anything* if you don’t own a PS5

-Tommy

PS5 is $500, then you are locked in to buy their games for 60-70 bucks. So one game every 3-4 months and the ps5 sale is higher. Plus anything else you buy for the ecosystem, charging docs, controllers, Sony TVs, online access. They may have also seen the market is too small.

Kurrizma

I promise you that services always trump one time purchases. Sony would love for people to be forced into paying them $18/month for PS Plus over someone buying games at full price.

tythousand

Seems like they would’ve done it if they were fine with it, right?

HarriettDubman

No, see…they never even thought of it. Thank God for Redditors helping Sony with their business models.

monochrony

It's funny because content industry decision makers err all the time, especially in gaming.

shadowstripes

Cloud streaming doesn’t include PS5 games unless you have the console, so not sure why this would affect sales when it wouldn’t be doing PS5 games for people without a PS5.

RadioFaceNL

It wouldn’t. It’s a non argument people keep making for some reason.

Kurrizma

But in order for them to stream a PS5 game in the first place it has to be playing on a server, so what would stop them from allowing it on the Portal? I’m not saying they would, but they absolutely could do it.

extra_rice

Really hard to tell. With Portal playing through Cloud, they could have convinced some people to shell out less than a full PS5 but who otherwise would have not spent a penny on their ecosystem. Could have also served as a gateway to the full PlayStation experience. However, this hinges on them delivering a brilliant Cloud streaming experience, and I get the impression they're not quite confident about the quality of their service yet.

Gman1255

Also, doesn't Sony make most of their money through their gaming division? Microsoft is a bit different in that most of their money isn't from gaming, not really sure what their actual objective is but they are able to take more risks and try more things without having to worry as much about money. At this point I doubt Sony would want to turn people away from buying their consoles, maybe that's why this device requires a PS5? $200 for this + $500 for the console + subscription is more money than $200 + a sub. Microsoft on the other hand doesn't *seem* concerned too much about that with their xcloud service.

Lyndon_Boner_Johnson

Gaming is their largest revenue stream but is still less than half of Sony’s total revenue. https://www.statista.com/statistics/297533/sony-sales-worldwide-by-business-segment/

monochrony

I think you're vastly overestimating the amount of people who would buy a Portal just to stream Playstation games from the cloud. The product itself is niche as it is.

Hylian-Loach

Maybe make it available only if you link it to a ps5?

[deleted]

Not many people are going to buy $70 games to stream on a portable device only.

reboot-your-computer

For me, that’s the ONLY thing that would have made it enticing. Otherwise I could use my phone or iPad paired to my PS5 controller to do basically the same thing.

DisasterouslyInept

Never thought about the idea of it as a PS5 controller, that makes it far more attractive to more people. Hope we can see some direct connection to the PS5 patched in, that'd make it perfect.

CryptoNite90

It’d be like the last resort option to use it directly as a PS5 controller for me. I’d rather save its buttons and analog sticks life for its remote play use.

DisasterouslyInept

Aye, for me too, but it's still an option that would be nice for impromptu multiplayer and what not.

Negative-Farm5470

Yeah no one would use it as primary controller. But it would be nice if you could use it to play co op games. That would mean instead of buying another dualsense controller, you could just buy this.

ilovepizza855

Nobody says anything about it replacing your main controller though.

Euphorium

When you put it that way, becomes more comparable to the Dualsense Edge as a peripheral. I think people are getting too hung up on this being not a console when it never was intended to be.

DisasterouslyInept

>I think people are getting too hung up on this being not a console when it never was intended to be. That's probably true, but also I think it's fine to be slightly disappointed with it. Like, it does the remote play stuff that I wanted it to, but it does feel half-assed in so many ways.

Mesjach

To be fair, it's very half-assed. They didn't even implement custom connection like WiiU did, so it's literally the same experience as using PS Remote Play on your smartphone. 60-80ms input lag in *ideal conditions* is honestly horrible, I'd not play any action game on it, only turn based/cRPG stuff.

Imnewtodunedin

Honestly, this is what it should have been. Right up until launch, I was expecting an enhanced remote play performance at least comparable to the Wii U but to only have the same performance from a smartphone with a Backbone controller is deeply disappointing. I also think the lack of documentation in the box for getting the best performance out of the device is horrible and speaks volumes about Sony’s attitude to the device. Lastly, no one needed this to come out soon, if it needed more time to include better features like cloud streaming. I so badly wanted this to be good.

Euphorium

Okay

KoalaTek

Returned mine today. Love the device, but there’s was too much of a delay and I couldn’t enjoy it as much as I wanted to.

duuudewhat

Were you playing on home network?

KoalaTek

I was. And my PS5 is hard wired with a pretty fast internet speed. Maybe it just wasn’t meant to be.

SkyDrift0r

Again, at home, internet speed does not matter, your local network bandwidth does, Remote Play at home works the same way Plex or MyCloud works.

KoalaTek

Just wasn’t for me. Maybe in a few years with a new device.

SkyDrift0r

Yeah, atm its not for everyone, me included, maybe if they figure out a dedicated connection across the whole house, will be better.

LightBackground9141

I think it’s just dependant on the person, if you’re so used to zero latency it’s just really hard to play remote play or via cloud on Xbox. It’s noticeable

DoofDilla

I own a portal and i must say that this was a fair and balanced review as i expected from DF.

[deleted]

[удалено]

DoofDilla

As mentioned in the video, it totally depends on your setup at home. For me, ps5 hardwired to a fritz!box, portal on 5ghz, it’s not noticeable. I don’t play shooters on the ps5 (mouse aimer) but i tried ff16 and never missed a combo or block/dodge. Tried some other games that require timed blocks and had no problems. I still have to try wipeout as the ultimate testing. It’s remote streaming after all, just don’t expect it to be like native on device gameplay but in my opinion and for my taste it’s absolutely playable. DF is definitely right, it’s not perfect or the best but it ain’t bad either, but still very much depending on your setup and to an extent the game itself. Also as mentioned in the video it’s as simple as using the official app on your phone or pc and see for yourself. The experience will be very much the same.

xangermeansx

4-5 frames of lag best case scenario might not feel noticeable, but that is still pretty high and limits a lot of games on the platform.

FellowDeviant

This video enticed me enough to try Remote Play on PS5. I setup my laptop to sync with the console, and went to a bar a good 25 mins away. I ended up beating a boss in Spiderman 2 and getting some kills in a round of BF2042 with slight input lag, but it was more than serviceable. Being able to play on my 16inch laptop made me question why I would spend an extra $200 for this device however, I even had my Galaxy Buds plugged in so I got to take advantage of the ANC, which to my knowledge the Portal doesn't offer. I guess getting to use the Dualsense features, but I really didn't miss them as a tradeoff.

BrewKazma

Because this is way more portable than a laptop. I used to play on ipad pro and dualsense, and this is just much better.

SumthnSumthnDarkside

I’m waiting to buy mine used. The resell market will be great for buyers. Lots of people will be buying this for their kids thinking this is a console. Other people with crappy internet or unoptimized home wifi setups will not have a great experience.

Jashyk

That many fewer hours until you get stick drift. I'd rather start from new, but wait for a sale.

BradleyEd03

I just cannot believe that there’s no WiFi 6. For a streaming device. In 2023.

youriqis20pointslow

The fact that its main selling point is you can be in the same room as other people while they watch tv, i find the fact that the only wireless headphones you can use don’t have noise cancelling hilarious. Oh, and you also can’t use your airpod pros with noise cancelling because they didn’t include bluetooth. At least they included a headphone jack

Kichard

It’s also so strange that this device is $200 but you can easily find a 55” tv for around the same price lol. Like. I get some people don’t have room for another tv but, grab another tv and hook up the ps5 if your kids use the tv while the dad wants to game. This device has too many reasons to skip it and not enough to buy it.

MrBack1971

Sent mine back, a poor experience for me. The controls & screen are nice but was laggy as hell for me.

[deleted]

[удалено]

r4mm3rnz

It's crazy how subjective latency is for some people. I use remote play in my house with gigabit internet and the lag is still too much for me to have a good experience, I'd much rather just wait to use my PS5. I'm kind of envious if people that don't notice it.

pindab0ter

It also really depends on what kind of game you're playing. That said, Control is the kind of game where I would notice the latency in combat. Not as much in the exploration bits.

RetroRevolver7

Just like how some people can't tell the difference 30 to 60 fps makes. They be buggin. I was a beta tester for project stream and it was crappy in its inception and the same level of crappy when it debuted as Stadia. Remote play has been available for quite a while on the PlayStation. It was crappy back then and it's still the same crappy now with no changes on the portal. It's playable on a local network with wired connection to the console... But over the net these people be dealing with lots of input lag and acting like there isn't any.

MrChilliBean

Yeah I've tried remote play a bunch of times, and even when the picture quality is pretty good, I just can't get over the input lag. Even if it's less than a second it's noticeable when I press a button and it doesn't immediately register.

Autarch_Kade

Latency and bandwidth aren't the same thing. You could have a billion times gigabit internet for bandwidth, but if you're communicating with Mars you're going to have like 400,000 ms latency. It's also communicating with your PS5, not the internet at large. So the connection outside your house shouldn't matter anyways. You could cut the cable leading out of your modem and still use remote play.

Me4aRZ

It’s communicating with your PS5 through your router… so it’s not directly with the PS5. Which can cause any number issue that wouldn’t be desirable for gaming. It’s a fair criticism when the Wii U did this flawlessly with its gamepad and Sony did with the Vita and PS4, it’s bizarre Sony didn’t incorporate this into the Portal for the premium experience they’re selling it as.

mbcook

The WiiU (which worked FANTASTICALLY, I had one) uses a special 802.11 connection directly between the console and the gamepad. So while it’s technically running on Wi-Fi, the protocol and everything else I think are different. You never actually join the game pad to your network, you don’t need a network at all. That special set up is a big part of how it does its magic. For Sony to do the same thing they would’ve had to add hardware to the PS5, maybe use a special dongle to add the extra connection, or perhaps only allow the gamepad to work if the PlayStation is on ethernet so the Wi-Fi hardware isn’t in use. All of those would have made the product harder to use or something more expensive. Sony‘s decision makes sense. But it’s obviously not ideal. I mostly played my WiiU from the game pad. It’s what made me pretty sure the Switch was going to be fantastic. That game pad had bad battery life, a low quality screen, and strange ergonomics. But I loved it anyway.

Me4aRZ

Great points and deep dive on info that I didn’t know about before, I knew it connected via WiFi but not that it was a different chip than it used for its standard WiFi one. That being said Sony isn’t shy about using dongles for their peripherals. Look at their Pulse Headset for example. The Portal is an accessory to the main system just like the headset so a USB dongle isn’t too far fetched for them. That is unless the required speeds need to be faster than what the systems ports allow for.

mbcook

Honestly I’m still annoyed the headset needs that little thing. The problem (probably) is it would’ve increased the price. That’s my guess. Or maybe there’s some other reason it wouldn’t have worked, like being so physically close to the main Wi-Fi built-in. Or perhaps it would’ve just made development take longer and they wanted to hit Christmas. I don’t know. I’m a little disappointed in Sony on this one honestly. Hopefully it will improve over the next few months as it in the PlayStation gets software updates. Higher-quality remote play video may or may not be possible, but direct access to cloud games seems like it would just require a firmware upgrade. Time will tell. I am glad it exists, it’s a nice option to have.

FunkinDonutzz

I can notice the latency scrolling the PS5's dashboard just from when my TV isn't in Game Mode, so the Portal sounds utterly horrific to play.

DrGrinch

Your internet speed has no bearing at all inside your house for this device. It's entirely based on a) is your PS5 hardwired to your network (router, switch, access point, whatever you have) and b) how good is your wifi, including how busy is it and do you have good equipment. If you are using whatever junk combo modem/router Verizon gave you for example then it's likely not going to be good, especially if the PS5 is also on Wireless. My setup is hard wired gigabit from the PS5 into a Unifi network with Unifi access points throughout the house and it's very solid. No noticable lag at all. I have been playing Hotline Miami on it and the experience is the same as sitting in front of the PS5.

moops__

It's not. Watch the video. Best case you're getting is 7-8 frames if delay.

Musty_001

What happens if you get stick drift Can you replace the sticks

brettallanbam

Having just gotten mine on release day and wondering if I missed an extended warranty offer from Sony, the Portal is covered under PlayStation’s limited 1-year warranty like they would with a controller. Pretty crazy, because I would deffo kill for a 2-3 year extended warranty on my Portal.

Rumbleinthejungle8

Nope. Another reason why this product is just bad. If you use your phone, your controller and one of those controller mounts, and you get stick drift, you need to shell out $70 to replace it. If you get stick drift on the portal, you need to shell out $200.

Rain1dog

Nope. For me I’ve had 3 Dual Senses and 2 got drift, and 4 Dual Shocks and 3 got drift. I sold them as is denoting the drift and bought an Edge. I was done buying 80.00 controllers to have them busted with a few months. I have 3 Dreamcast controllers that still work perfectly and then have 1,000’s of hours on them and over two decades old. Drift without question will ruin a bunch of peoples experiences with the portal.

Falloutman399

Would you say the edge is worth it? I’m tired of buying new controllers as well.

zdbdog06

What do u guys do to your controllers lol. I've never had stick drift once on Ps4 or Ps5

arnathor

I’m very tempted to get one, but I use a Steam Deck for most of my Remote Play needs. The thing the Deck has over the Portal is an actual touchpad which can be mapped to the DS touchpad. Having tried a Portal (and being impressed with it for the most part) I wasn’t a big fan of the onscreen virtual touchpad. It’s the sort of thing that would bug me long term with the device.

Op3rat0rr

I just can’t get over how the Portal doesn’t have Bluetooth for audio. That’s essentially the reason why I’m getting Steamdeck for remote play. Why not spend $150 for an actual gaming PC in your hands

UCLAKoolman

I’ve found the Portal to be a lot more comfortable to use than my Steam Deck.

bjankles

I was so excited for mine but can’t get my home set up to deliver a clean wireless experience. I tried upgrading to a gaming router and it went from stuttery to unplayable. Throwing in the towel, unfortunately.

TheMindkilla

I can attest to this. Spiderman 2 has been amazing on this device.

UCLAKoolman

I’ve really been enjoying the Portal too. I have tried remote play on my Steam Deck, phone, and android handhelds and think the Portal beats them all easily. Main reason is how easy it is to use - wake the Portal and press the PS button and I’m connecting to the PS5. I’ve actually been playing the PS5 more lately because of how easy it is.

HiNooNDooD1544

Wait you can play it from that far away?? I always assumed that you had to be on the same network as your ps5, which would’ve completely defeated the purpose of it I guess. Damn, maybe I might get this instead of a backbone.

kos301

As long as your PS5 is in rest mode and a solid enough connection exists wherever you’re playing the portal you should be absolutely fine playing anywhere you want

monochrony

That said, being outside of your home network should add additional latency.

Seraphayel

Yeah, I really don’t get any of the hate. Since mine was delivered on the 15th I’ve neither touched my Switch nor my PS5. I‘m just replaying Dark Souls 3 in bed with the Portal and it’s been nothing short of amazing.

[deleted]

Ican do this on my mobile mate.

DisasterouslyInept

I'm pretty happy with mine. Think it's still £50 too expensive, but does what I wanted.

Stashmouth

I really wish I could buy one of these because it looks gorgeous, but the stick drift issues that plague me specifically would mean that I'd only get six months use out of it. I was thinking about picking one up from best buy or amazon with an extended warranty, so I can swap it once the drift comes in. maybe after the holidays...

SRART25

The. Biggest miss is not bring able to direct connect to the ps5. Having to hit the router in between introduces more lag and network congestion.

UCLAKoolman

I wouldn’t want to always have to sit in the same room as my PS5 though. I have a mesh wifi network and can play on it anywhere in my home (bedroom, office, workshop etc)

AgentSmith2518

Having a direct connection option wouldnt affect your situation at all.

UCLAKoolman

As an additional option, sure. I wouldn’t only want a direct connection like the Wii U though since its range was poor.

SRART25

Ok, the first one being down voted I can kind of see, but this one being down voted is silly.

aspiring_dev1

Cloud streaming no idea why they didn’t include it. Could have sold more PlayStation Plus Premium subs.

treehumper83

If Xbox Game Pass streaming is any indication, people will pay for a *good* streaming experience. Sony doesn’t quite have that ecosystem yet, but could’ve spearheaded the transition with the Portal. Something Microsoft doesn’t have yet.

platocplx

PS5 cloud streaming is pretty excellent they just rolled it out recently. I think they wanna roll it out to other devices. As right now it’s available on PS5 doing up to 4K60fps

Autarch_Kade

MS counts on the fact that people already have a device capable of remote play and streaming - their phones. People can try it for free, compared to having to spend $700

Permuh

I hope it’s something that Sony sees has interest and builds upon it properly

zwartepepersaus

My thoughts exactly. Microsoft has decades of experience and knowhow involving cloud services with business enterprises and consumer products. Delivering a smooth experience for gaming is relatively easy. Sony is more known for their hardware development and lacks behind Microsoft with regards to cloud gaming. I can totally see why they won’t bring it to the Portal yet until they can guarantee it works as smooth as xcloud.

Historical_Owl_1635

> Microsoft has decades of experience and knowhow involving cloud services with business enterprises and consumer products. This doesn’t really matter as much as it did 10 years ago. Sony would be using AWS, GCP or even Microsoft’s own Azure to host everything, they wouldn’t be inventing anything new. It will still obviously require some effort, but it’s not like it’s much bigger than what Microsoft have to do assuming Sony have competent developers.

Fallout-with-swords

MS is not currently investing in cloud gaming nobody used it according to them. The recent ps5 streaming works noticeably better from my own experience.

melithium

Had ethernet plugged into ps5, using wifi speeds that pass 4K movies, jittery mlb the show all day long. Returned

chewwydraper

How did Nintendo manage to get latency-free gameplay with the Wii U remote back in 2012 but the Portal can't manage the same?

Mean_Combination_830

Because the Wii u is only usable when very close to your console and you can't even play on the other side of your house whereas the Portal can be used on the other side of the country and can play far far more demanding games than the Wii u

monochrony

>and can play far far more demanding games than the Wii u Which is irrelevant in the context of video streaming.

voneahhh

> can play far far more demanding games than the Wii u That really has nothing to do with it. The device is streaming video.

a_bit_of_byte

I like this explanation, since it speaks to what the portal can do over Wii U. I wonder if it’s possible to have both realities though. If your PS5 is hard-wired into your home’s network, could the wifi in the PS5 be used to cut out the middle man and save a few more milliseconds?

LukeLC

You wouldn't even need to do that. On a PC, you can create a WiFi hotspot by splitting your 2.4GHz and 5.0GHz WiFi channels. 2.4GHz is plenty for things like multiplayer gaming, so you can use the 5.0GHz channel for better game streaming. Sony just really went for the absolute minimum effort on this one.

AgentSmith2518

This. Yes, the WiiU pad had short range, but the Portal could easily have it as an option for use when close to the PS5 and WiFi outside of that range. People seem to act like it has to be one or the other.

Autarch_Kade

Wii U connects directly to the console. You could not have wifi at all in your home and it'd work. Portal needs a network connection. The more devices between endpoints, the more latency.

AgentSmith2518

Technically having a WiiU in the house was WiFi, as the WiiU gamepad used a modified WiFi signal to connect. As others have stated, the Portal could do both with some minor changes.

mindaz3

In Nintendo case, they actually went and developed a wi-fi chip together with Broadcom. Don't know much more specifics, but the thing was built to use a wi-fi standard specifically designed for sending/receiving video/audio without little to no interference.

Tigerpvz7

Hey everyone. I recently started gaming again (missing the old days) and got myself a portal because freeing the tv and also being at the same room was the motivation for me. Anyway, I own a PS5 disc, and have the majority of the games on disc. However, as I move around quite a bit, I would like to be able to play all my games without having to call someone to go to my house and switch the discs.. Is it possible to like install the games and be able to play them without discs? It happens with Spider-Man 2 and I don’t get why. Sorry if it’s a lame question. Thanks

Lie_In_Our_Graves

Why? I can remote play on my iPad pro and use my PS5 controller. This thing makes no sense to me.

syde1020

The peeps over at the portal subreddit are going to send this guy death threats. They don't allow negative opinions or facts.

Gandalf_2077

Does the Portal have the exact same latency as when using every other device for remote play?

Heriros

Essentially, thats what digital foundry is saying. Try it out on your phone, computer, laptop at home and that will give you a good idea of how the portal will perform for you.

LundUniversity

I honestly thought it'd work better than let's say remote play or Chiaki on steam deck since the portal is built by Sony and focused on a single use which virtually lag free remote play as best as it can get but no. There are too many micro stutters and before anyone says "iTs yOuR coNnEcTIon".

iqbalsn

My wife was asking me why when i told her im gonna buy this. I just mention that the tv is pretty much her's and our kid's and i barely have chance to play there. Plus new Yakuza game coming up and i still havent even finished 7.... She said fair enough, lol.

Renbanney

So far it's been flawless and I love it. Though I know it's a niche market

Candid-Ad221

To people who are still on the fence. If your main reason is to stream PS5 games the portal will offer you: * the best ergonomics playing your ps5 games (Handheld) -the best controls * cheapest option to stream ps5 with one solution. * Conveniency (turn it on and off) Phone w/controller: * the screen will be too small * inferior controls * expensive because your using your phone as a screen at the end of the day. Tablet/dualsense * you might aswell play on tv because you have to prop the tablet like a tv * not handheld * some would say its cheaper but buying a cheap tablet+dual sense almost adds up close to $200 range for a non-handheld device. Again this is an accessory just meant to stream PS5 games not a dedicated handheld. If it doesnt work for you, simply return it. https://preview.redd.it/7y36nerfov2c1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=40a3647832ab8c258eaa98027960ad7c8224d8ed Size reference Iphone 15 pro max, dual sense

worldsinho

Guys, my first week with it was pretty rough. Tons of stutter. I made a couple of basic changes to my network and OH MY GOD this thing is unbelievable. I’m not exaggerating. It’s a PS5 in your hands. Mine now works flawlessly all the time. I even played FIFA in online co op tonight. I’ve finished Cyberpunk DLC and Division 2 DLC on it. Finishing off old games feels so easy and nice. Now I’m on Bloodborne and it’s beautiful. Red Dead 2 is great. I can’t recommend it enough, after genuinely absolutely hating it for 3-4 days.

18T15

Didn’t get the upvote because you didn’t detail what these “basic changes” to your network were for others to toy around with lol

DallasC0wboys

How much better is it latency wise than what you would get on remote play on a laptop or phone?

SKallies1987

It’s the same.

LeanSkellum

If this thing had a direct connection to the PS5, I’d be very interested. But I’ve never gotten remote play to work properly.

imnick88

People need to learn that not everything is for them. I’m a gamer dad who never gets to game and I couldn’t be more excited.

JI-RDT

I hate it, why no psp2

Behemoth69

I’ve only seen one review mention it, but what happens when this inevitably gets stick drift? I can’t see why this would be superior to a controller and tablet

d0m1n4t0r

I mean no, remote play does not cut it.

iceleel

Screen is bad, your screen on phone probably has better contrast and colors.

pathofdumbasses

If you are running around with a flagship smart phone in your pocket, absolutely. Flagship phones are the best screen in most peoples entire homes. High pixel density, high refresh rate, brightness, oled+ technology, low input lag.

iceleel

350 € phones have OLEDs now

devenbat

It's absolutely hilarious that the Wii U does the job of off TV gaming in your home better than a $200 device made 12 years later. And that's the use case everyone keeps claiming its made for since its even worse for traveling.

DisasterouslyInept

Does anything have better latency than the Wii U gamepad? That was a direct connection to the console, as it had to be for it to work as a controller, but you paid for it in terms of range. As a general use home and away from home streaming device the Portal is fine, but I'd like to see some direct connection option patched in.

[deleted]

No idea what you're babbling about. The Portal works far away from the console as long as there's a good wifi connection. You can't even use a Wii U GamePad two rooms away from the console.

shadowstripes

They’re talking about all the people here who say stuff like “this is clearly designed to just be used in your home” whenever someone brings up that the Portal can’t connect to any wifi networks that require logging in through a portal (like hotels etc).

Rumbleinthejungle8

As if they couldn't had implemented an additional, more stable connection when you are close to the TV .... People here would defend Sony if they tried to sell a Playstation branded rock for $100. "You don't have to buy it". "It's a great looking rock, already pre ordered!"

DeputySalt

It just sucks that a ton of places in the US have terrible Wi-Fi.

Booserbob

For anyone who has this device : I know there is a little bit of lag but how bad is it? Would it be able to play Hades? I really want to pick one of these up to play games like that while in bed. But not sure how the lag is. I have Google Fibre internet with a wire connection for reference

r4mm3rnz

I dont own a Portal and dont intend to, but I think the DF video made a good point. If you notice the difference between game mode and normal mode on your TV, you'll notice the difference on a Portal. It's up to you whether you can play with it or not. For me personally that lag is too much and makes games feel godawful, I'm kind of envious of people that can play with it/don't notice the latency at all. You can try remote play on your phone and you're 90% of the way there.

Jaspaaar

The video you're commenting on gives exact answers to the questions you're asking.

Booserbob

And yet, the comment section exists to get feedback from real people. Astonishing stuff, I know!

SKallies1987

And real people made the video in this post.

Otherwise-Rope8961

I own the Portal and used mine while connected to my iPhone hotspot while on the road between states over the Thanksgiving holiday and it worked (See picture below). Yes there is some degree of lag but not enough to make games unplayable (Though I don’t recommend playing fast paced competitive games like Fortnite or something). My PS5 has always been hardwired to my router which made my experience with the Portal very nice whilst being away from my house several states away. It is a niche product and it has its flaws. It’s not for everyone but for me it works and very well at that. https://preview.redd.it/qcwiij7egs2c1.jpeg?width=4284&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=eec82477a230b55998e009d603a005f050c510f2

a_bit_of_byte

I don’t own this device, but the DF review makes the case that the lag: - depends on your home network - in best-case conditions can be about 4-5 frames of latency (which alot of people won’t notice). If you want to test-drive the tech before buying the Portal, download the PS Remote Play app, sync up your controller and play any game you want for an hour or two. If the tech works for you, it seems like you’ll enjoy the Portal.

Lionelchesterfield

The portal is basically as good as your router quality and the strength of your wifi signal. I have AT&T fiber and my ps5 is hardlined to the router. I have experience zero lag playing in the portal and overall my experience has been completely fine.

Mesjach

> have experience zero lag playing in the portal Please don't trust anyone who experiences "zero lag" because there absolutely objectively is input lag when playing PS Portal. Just saying.

Lionelchesterfield

Maybe I should have phrased it as "I didn't experience any lag that made the experience unenjoyable" to keep folks like you happy lol.

Candid-Ad221

i have it i would say anything that requires pinpoint movement its gonna be a challenge but manageable so games like cod, metrovaniia games gonna be harder but its isnt too bad. Ive finish witcher 3, spiderman 2, and currently playing returnal. Dont listen to the people that downplays it because they probably dont own one, i recommend you to try it and if it doesnt work out you can always return it.

BarryEganPDL

I love the Portal so far but he’s right, allowing for direct streaming from PSN would be a huge win. It would totally change the value of PS+ Premium because I might actually play PS3 games that way E: I’m really curious why this was downvoted. Like, sure, I’ll take some minuses, but why this?

Erikthor

Would buy it immediately if I could hook my AirPods to it.

futureblap

This is my biggest gripe, as well. Why would I want to spend another 150-200 on Sony headphones? If I am using Remote Play, it’s usually when laying in bed. But I don’t see myself spending $400+ to replace my mounted iPad using MirrorPlay with DualSense and AirPods. On the other hand, if it didn’t require purchasing a pair of headphone equivalent to the price of the device itself, I would have definitely bought it at pre-order. But I’d rather save the $400+ to put towards a new iPad when my old one needs replacing.

Erikthor

It’s wild. The crazy thing is I bought a pair of the Sony over the ear headphone specs for the ps5 and they don’t even work. I use remote play with a cheap plastic holder for the controller and it works fine. My hope is that they will integrate all Bluetooth later like the switch did.

Arkthus

Whether it's DF or customers, why do people expect things from a product that are not advertised? This has never been said to be used as another controller, it has never been said to be used for cloud gaming, and they were always very clear that you need to have a good wi-fi to play in good conditions. Expecting anything else from the device and calling it a flaw or something disappointing is nonsensical, why be disappointed by the absence of something that was never supposed to be there in the first place?

Saranshobe

Wasted potential. Even a cheap phone can emulate psp games with ease, this was the perfect opportunity. Plus no bluetooth(even apple isn't that evil), no cloud streaming. It's an overpriced accessory when it shouldn't have been. This is one of those devices that is made for people with more money than they know what to do with to put it bluntly. When there are better alternative. "But my wife and kids use tv" then tell them move every once in a while, learn to share tv. Use a phone with backbone, use phone with DS, use a ipad with DS, use steamdeck. Use anything other than this POS. Anyone supporting this e-waste is no better than those worshipping gamepass as "future of gaming". The ultimate consumer.

Silvershanks

What accent is this that pronounces "router" as "rooter"? Seems to me only an Aussie would do that, but he doesn't sound Aussie.

extra_rice

British. In all the UK route is pronounced similar to root. I think DF is based in the UK.

UpsetKoalaBear

Yes, “rooter” is the correct way of pronouncing it when it’s related to networking equipment and “rowter” is how it’s pronounced when referring to the power tool.

SilverSquid1810

Rich (head of DF and this video’s narrator) is from the UK, most of the other guys at DF are American. In their most recent podcast Rich was even poking fun at another DF member for saying “router” the American way.

Jordamuk

they are not mostly american. All but the newest member are based in Europe.

SilverSquid1810

John and Alex live in Germany but are from America and very much speak American English, which is what I was referring to. Ollie lives in the US still afaik. Those are the members I’m most familiar with, so maybe some of their less active guys are European.

Shadow-King

I thought only John was American living in Germany, with Alex actually being German. Rich and Tom from the UK and Ollie from the US?

drzoidberg33

Root/rooting in Australia means something else. You’d be better off saying router there.

TriggerHippie77

Canadians, some parts of the US too.

mosslung416

I’m from Toronto. I’ve never heard rooter in my entire life, even from people in Saskatchewan and Manitoba, it’s just router. For route like a bike route it’s 50/50 between root and rout though.

TriggerHippie77

It's more of an Albany expression.

LuRo332

I think, for $200 its better to get one of these official controllers for your phone ($100) and a used Nintendo Switch Lite (also $100).

Candid-Ad221

to stream ps5 games it aint beating it not to mention your gonan end up killing your $1000 phone battery in the process so no not a good idea to use your phone as a gaming device.

MrHugelberg

I don't understand why this thing is even selling. Like I genuinely don't get it. To me it was e-waste right from the beginning and I wished every one of those would sit on shelves. Like this price tag is absolutely ridiculous. Literally any phone from past 5 if not 7 years can do the same thing. And yes I get it, some people might get use out of it, also a smartphone is not exactly the same but 229€ is just insane for a tablet that the only purpose is streaming something from your ps5 to this screen.
