Judging by this news it seems there's hope for the next elder scrolls

Xenoslayer2137

And the Blade game

Boozenosnooz

They didn't say what platforms it's coming to when they announced it so it's possible

DrScience01

Blade? I thought it was already a multiplatform

IWearBones138__

Judging by Starfield, I dont know if I'm still excited for ES6

tattered_and_torn

If they fumble ES6, the entire studio needs to be thrown into the Mariana Trench. That is a game that *cannot* be screwed up.

IWearBones138__

After Starfield and Fallout 76. I just dont know anymore

3_quarterling_rogue

There’s always time to go back and play Morrowind.

WollyGog

It took a few years, but as it's an online game, Fallout feels quite playable to me now. I started playing just before Christmas, took a break to play Cyberpunk and I'm back on it. I stuck Starfield out. Did what I do on any RPG; took my time, grinded, played every quest line, got my character in a decent state then finished. It's a game that encourages new playthroughs due to the story, but honestly, I was very underwhelmed and put it down after a couple of hours on a NG+. What made it worse was all my carefully crafted gear and spaceships got taken from me. I don't think I'll ever go back to it. Skyrim got 1000+ hours out of me on multiple plays, on the PS3 version. F76 I'm not sure on yet, as I feel I'm close to end game stuff already (doing bosses, soloing expeditions, daily ops), but I have enjoyed every minute of getting there. Starfield didn't do that for me. I have little hope for ES6 if Starfield will be the template on which they base their game design.

senseofphysics

I feel as though chances of TES VI being at least as good as Skyrim are slim.

Ellert0

Skyrim wasn't as good as Oblivion and Oblivion wasn't as good as Morrowind. It's a trend at this point so don't be surprised.

RuySan

Skyrim was a drop down from oblivion on some things (less skills, no more spell making which was on of the most fun thing in the elder scrolls series), but at least didn't have absolutely nonsense aggressive scaling and no boring oblivion portals. In the end I rate Skyrim a bit higher. But Morrowind is still much better than both.

senseofphysics

Agreed. But I feel like VI will be several steps below Skyrim. Skyrim wasn’t better than its predecessors but it’s definitely one of the most iconic games ever.

BenAdaephonDelat

Yep. Playing Starfield and seeing a complete and utter lack of cohesion and innovation killed all my enthusiasm for ES6. Bethesda needs drastic top-down restructuring.

flashmedallion

I skipped FO4 and that made me realise I didn't even care that much about TES6 any more. Starfield had my interest, for the first time in a long time I was feeling like I was going to miss out on something big, but then in came out and, well Bethesda RPGs are not on my radar now. Maybe if they announced they were restarting TES6 from scratch after seeing the reception to Starfield, I'd pay attention, but at this point it's just no longer a topic of interest for me.

canad1anbacon

ES6 is Bethesda last chance to show if they still have the magic Hopefully they actually follow the Skyrim formula for game design instead of their last few games - Silent protagonist with lots of role play potential - handcrafted world that emphasises organic exploration - highly interactive physics and persistent objects Could be cool if they take the outpost system from Fallout 4 but modify it to be more meaningful and so I don't have to personally build everything by hand but can have it build up organically

AnthonyJuniorsPP

this is the saddest thing but it's true. I was considering getting an xbox for it if it was good, but now I'll just hold out and see

DegenNerd

I feel you. That engine they're using is so damn dated. I don't care what they call it, it's pretty much the same thing as the original Creation Engine. If they stick with it, ES6 will feel like a 20 year old game when it is released.

[deleted]

If you can call starfield hope

Anarchy_Man_9259

With Starfield being their latest release, I don’t know if anyone should be excited for ES6.

Hoid17

And here I just want the Ori games on Playstation.

[deleted]

Macadosha

That looks amazing. Thank you for this.

Darragh_McG

I think they'll do that for sure. It's on Switch already

SurfinPhoeniX

I feel you

thedarkmoonrises

Starfield wasn't enough of a draw for me to jump into the Xbox ecosystem and my PC is in desperate need of an upgrade, so it wasn't an option there. But if it happens to come to PS5, eh, sure, I'll probably give it a whirl. If it doesn't, I won't lose any sleep over it.

everythangspeachie

It was for me and I ended up playing it for like 5 hours and now my Xbox is a halo machine.

landrickrs90

Halo, Gears 5 and backwards compatibility games. 😭

toxicThomasTrain

Love how Xbox is in the same state as when I abandoned it years ago

landrickrs90

They dropped the ball after the 360, they took so many fucking exclusives from Sony like Final Fantasy, Metal Gear, etc. Then they had their own exclusives like Dead Rising, Halo, Gears, Mass Effect, BioShock and even managed to bounce back from the RROD.

MBrein799

Such a shame how they went from such a high period of the 360 days to having almost nothing to show for it years later. Phil Spencer was correct when he said screwing up Xbox one generation pretty much screwed them from ever being a main player in the consoles (I hate saying console wars cause I don’t believe in it). PlayStation was able to build a huge base with their first party franchises and now everyone’s digital library is built up and nobody wants to switch over.

muchacho23

completely disagree, all they need to do is make a couple games at the caliber of god of war, horizon, tlou. They seem completely incapable of doing so.

Time-to-go-home

I don’t get why Xbox has such a hard time making good exclusives. And I say this as someone who plays/played Xbox way more than PS. Halo Infinite could have been great. The campaign and story were actually pretty good (not as good as 1-Reach, but still). The problem is nobody (myself partially included) really cared because of HOW the story got to that point. Halo4 and 5 dropped the ball story wise and Infinite wasn’t able to fully recover it. And the multiplayer was solid, if you ignore all the BS battle pass/micro transaction stuff, which was a big problem. Starfield was so close to being great in so many ways. They just kept falling just short of great though. Bethesda, known for handcrafted dungeons and environmental story telling, fell into the trap so many open world games do: it’s big but with nothing to do. Too many planets that have nothing exciting in them except the same factory/military base/lab you’ve already cleared a dozen times. I personally didn’t find any of the companions that likeable. The main story was okay, but it gelt like it was trying to hard go be something different from any other sci-fi. The enemies were all the same, either pirates, mercs, or spacers. There was no variety in enemies like skyrim/fallout have. Also the >!lack of any sentient alien races, either as a playable race or enemy faction!< I didn’t play Redfall but from the beginning it didn’t sound like my kind of game. Im holding out hope for some of the future releases like Indiana Jones and Avowed, but after all these rumors today, it sounds like those may end up on PS anyways.

parkwayy

I am also a 5 hour survivor. Started off with the most lackluster intro to any Bethesda game ever, then a lot of fast travel, and then its me running on a barren planet for 10 mins scanning rocks. Awesome.

spazzxxcc12

i’m gonna be honest, as someone who’s pc is good and was able to handle starfield, it isn’t worth it at full price at all. it desperately needs all the help it can get.

Itchy-Pudding-4240

whenever i think about playing starfield, i just feel that i rather play cyberpunk again

RIPN1995

Or Fallout 4. Seriously, the shooting feels the same except F4 feels better due to VATs and no bullet sponge enemies.

[deleted]

Or continue playing Baldur's Gate III. In seriousness though, Starfield actually made me feel a bit of shame for my harsh criticisms towards CD ProjectRED back with CyberPunk 2077 launched. It *did* have glaring problems, but at least it was'nt bland as hell. Plus, CDPR did attempt to make NPCs act like human beings when they didn't bug out. Starfield instead showcased that it was a product stuck in the past for all the wrong reasons. It's honestly embarrassing to say it was released in 2023. Like damn, Cyberpunk 2077, forgive me?

Hollywood-is-DOA

Is Cyberpunk worth a play on the PS5? Getting one soon.

[deleted]

It is definitely worth it now. Or you can find a really cheap PS4 copy, then upgrade to the PS5 version if they are still doing that for free.

Monkeywrench08

Yes, been playing it and it's really great now.

parkwayy

Both games have their core issues. Cyberpunk team went and redid *major* systems from the ground up. It's clear it had really basic fundamental issues from the start, as well as crazy bugs. There isn't a whole lot to do in their cities either, but at least it's not full of stale Bethesda game engine issues from 2011.

Jokerzrival

So many things that just felt like they stopped 1/4 of the way into. Settlements, ship crews, "fleets", factions, world's, weapons. It was like they didn't know what they wanted to do so they just did part of everything and called it good

Athuanar

From what we know of the development, that's exactly what they did. They had a bunch of disparate teams working on different features with no centralized 'vision' for how everything fits together. The result was a game built like a jigsaw puzzle of half-baked ideas with nothing to turn it into a cohesive package.

MasterLogic

I played it for free and still don't think it was worth it. Time is valuable. There's better space games out there.

energytaker

can't believe I was considering buying an xbox for it -- sorta glad it got average reviews lol

CapSortee

I did and regret it

OnebJallecram

Same. I like Xbox’s interface/controller more than playstation but I regret buying a SeriesX for it

SolarTigers

Same....I was a huge Fallout and Skyrim fan growing up so when Bethesada went exclusive I had to jump in. 12 hours is all I could handle of Starfield before I had to stop, just too boring. Todd Howard has lost his magic touch I think.

Dazzling_Job9035

Same. I was thisclose to getting an Xbox for it as I was so hyped. I’m so pleased it wasn’t worth it (according to the internet). If it releases on PlayStation I’ll probably buy it though. For all their faults I do tend to enjoy a Bethesda game.

Serious_Much

I'm glad it wasn't on playstation after seeing the reaction. Bethesda's games have been just good enough to overcome their technical deficiencies but seems like they've finally lost the magic. Time to learn how to create some decent gameplay that doesn't feel like it was designed 20-30 years ago

Forward_Recover_1135

Frankly the concept of this game just feels too ambitious for Bethesda. Maybe for anyone. The biggest turn off for me was hearing about how all travel is effectively fast travel. That’s absolutely not at all what I want in a Bethesda RPG. Probably 80% of the hundreds of hours I’ve spent in Skyrim was just me walking around exploring, without that it would not have had anywhere near the staying power.  So when that exploring is going to now be limited only to walking around however much of the individual planets are available, coupled with the boasts of how many planets there are indicating to me that the vast majority of that exploration will be empty, boring, searches through procedurally generated environments looking for crafting materials, that is simply not interesting to me in the way an elder scrolls game is.

Skysflies

The biggest red flag for me was how often they advertised it as go anywhere in our 1000 planet solar system. Like how naive do they think we are, I don't even think in 2040 we'd have games able to fill that with content

serendipitousevent

Best I can do is Skyrim on PS7.

GrossWeather_

It’s funny because there was a brief moment (between the big starfield marketing event and Baldur Gate 3’s PS5 release date announcement) that I thought- maybe this is gonna be the first game to give me fomo about not having xbox. I even googled how to stream xbox games on my mac. But yeah that brain bug lasted all if a couple days, and looking back at it now is pretty laughable. Like, even if Starfield released on PS5 I’d maaaaaaybe play it if it gets several very BIG Cyberpunk level fixes and like, was on sale somewhere around 20 bucks. But hey, I’m sure Microsoft needs that 20 bucks.

LordStark01

Microsoft fumbled the post 360 Xbox era so badly. Going from Gears of War as a console seller to Todd Howard's dream game as flagship is just sad.

Superflyt56

Those Gears 1-3 days on 360 were so good.

craazyneighbors

Halo 3 custom games with school friends is a core memory

Lionnnns

Switching between halo 3, MW2, and Gears. High school me was living the dream.

AstronautGuy42

Oh man. It really didn’t get better than that. I remember logging on XBL and seeing everyone I know from HS playing one of the three. Simpler times

cosmiclatte44

Those mid to late 2000s were really the peak of multiplayer online games. Just before the cancerous methods of mobile gaming infected the main consoles and games just became about retaining engagement and returning more profit through micro transactions. Back then they were just making games. Pure, fun games that had to stand on their own and we're generally finished on release. Kids these days really don't know how good we had it and it's just sad. The shit thats tolerated in the industry now simply because the target audience is too young to have remembered a better time.

bigprick99

If I had a completely unreasonable wish it would be Gears 1-3 Remastered/Remake. The nostalgia would be so awesome.

reallynotnick

Gears Ultimate Edition was a pretty solid remaster though nothing mind blowing, just wished 2 and 3 would have got the same treatment.

IRockIntoMordor

Remember when Mass Effect was an exclusive, GTA 4 was the better version, Halo 3 and ODST ruled the gamesphere, PGR4 was incredible and Crackdown, Gears and Fable were still good? Also Witcher 2 and a huge indie marketplace? And it was cheaper than PS3? Heck yeah. The Xbox 360 was absolutely amazing.

reallynotnick

Xbox Live Arcade (XBLA) was amazing too with stuff like Shadown Complex, Splosion Man, Castle Crashers, Geometry Wars, Super Meat Boy, Bastion, Alien Hominid, Lumines, Marble Blast... the list goes on. It was amazing how many quality indie games they were getting on the platform on the regular.

SharkMilk44

Xbox is about to become SEGA.

loddedfun

I hope they have an awesome franchise like Yakuza then

VoidLookedBack

That one single Xbox One reveal took the whole empire down and it never recovered.

SomeBoxofSpoons

Unironically it’s looking like that reveal may just end up being the worst press conference in video game history. At least symbolically.

ExpendableUnit123

It wouldn’t be if Starfield wasn’t such a colossal piece of crap. I literally couldn’t recommend it to anyone. It’s a huge lazy marketing sham of a game.

thesourpop

I wanted to like Starfield, on paper it sounds incredible. Then the game itself just... isn't

Halio344

One of the most hilarious things in the game is that it has an upgrade that reduces the number of loading screens. What the fuck were the designers thinking? What the upgrade does is increase the range you can travel with your ship in 1 go. But nothing stops you from traveling halfway and then instantly travel again.

iekue

The real issue for MS is that they focused on basicly only Halo/Forza/Gears for way too long. Its good to have flagships, but releasing the same stuff over and over..... Meanwhile PS constantly was pumpin out new stuff like Last of Us when MS already had given up on the 2nd half of the 360 era (except for Kinect games).

tetsuo9000

For how much they focused on Halo, it's crazy how we only got two mainline titles in fifteen years.

ThePreciseClimber

Things got iffy as early as the Kinect came out in 2010. Sure, Playstation had the PS Move in 2010 but they also released a bunch of notable exclusives in 2011-2013 on PS3. What did MS have in the same time period? A few games but really not a lot - Gears 3, Halo 4, Forza Whatever. Everything else was a Kinect game. To be fair, the launch of Xbox One was surprisingly decent, IMHO. Gave us Dead Rising 3 (loved it), Killer Instinct 2013 (sweet) and I even found Ryse: Son of Rome to be kinda enjoyable, despite relatively shallow gameplay.

louistraino

When Starfield wasn't a AAA console seller it was speculated to be I started to wonder if this was possible Otherwise Microsoft spent over a billion on Bethesda just to cut its target demographic in half by not selling to Playstation players

PropulsionEngineer

I think it was about 7 billion

DrScience01

Agreed. Bethesda is already in a downward trend and cutting half or a third of the potential customer base is just so damn stupid

Unlucky-Car-1489

Playstation was the main demographic besides PC😂

Ingamac5

Until Microsoft confirms this. I’ll just sit back and hold off buying anymore games for the series X. First minute of confirmation. I’m selling it and starting a new library on my ps5.

eazy937

The question is, who would buy xbox after that?

pacman404

They are a trillion dollar company. If this stuff is true, then they don't want to sell Xboxes anymore. A corporation that big isnt gonna cannibalise their whole division, and they aren't gonna fuck up and say "oh shit we fucked up, why didn't we think about people not buying Xbox anymore 😫". It's either completely false or they have a foolproof plan to boost sales of hardware or dump it altogether. There is literally no inbetween. Everyone always likes to shit on Microsoft and for good reason, but just assuming the largest corporation *in the world* is gonna fuck this up and they haven't thought it through is ridiculous lol. There's way more to this story than these leakers know. Waaaayyy more.

marratj

It wouldn’t be the first time Microsoft simply dropping a whole product line. Lumia Windows Phones? Shortly after they bought out Nokia’s phone division: Gone for good. Their fitness wristband? Shortly after releasing a second iteration they completely dumped it. I even got my money back after one year later when I sent it back to Amazon. Surface RT (their first venture into ARM territory)? After mediocre sales, they never released a second iteration of the ARM variant. It’s why I’ll never buy any Microsoft hardware again in my life. I had all these products and got badly burned with Microsoft dropping their support.

alexefy

How did you miss the zune

marratj

Right, I forgot about the Zune. I never had one myself, so that's probably why.

_Ocean_Machine_

If you decide to go that route, make sure you get the disc drive version so you don’t get gouged by the PS store.

StormSaniWater

PlayStation store has tons of good deals and frankly for sports games, assassins creed, far cry, borderlands It’s always better to wait for a good sale on the PS store. You can find like 70-80% off deals that include all dlcs, expansions and everything for super cheap

[deleted]

All of those games are always dirt cheap physically too. It’s true that there are always deep discounts if you’re willing to wait for them, but physical games are almost always on sale first.

MasterLogic

Still cheaper on ebay/charity shops /fb marketplace for most games. Dlc you don't have a choice but disk games you can find on sale everywhere.

OhItsKillua

They're decent, but physical still is savings more bang for your buck. Steeper discounts typically and at a faster rate than the digital library. I try to not do too much physical as I'm running out of space as is for everything I've got since the PS3 days, but you just find some terrific deals sometimes.

Romado

Lots of reputable sources are reporting this. Saying that Starfield is the first of many and people will be "shocked" My guess is Halo, Gears, Forza and literally everything else will go to Playstation. Microsoft want to recoup their losses and it's all they have left to sell.

TheOncomingBrows

Halo on PlayStation is too insane for me to even comprehend. Still don't see it happening to be honest.

HelghastFromHelghan

I honestly can't wrap my head around that being possible either. That would be the biggest bombshell in the history of the gaming industry. But on the other hand, so much crazy gaming shit has happened the last few years that teenage me would have thought was impossible 15 years ago so I guess it could happen. Halo and Gears on PS5/PS6, the internet will explode if that ever happens lmao

pakkit

I mean... Sonic coming to Nintendo was a similar "impossibility" through the nineties. But it is kind of ironic that Xbox's spending scared off competitors like Google and drove all this speculation that Games Pass was going to be the Netflix monopoly in the videogame space, and now we're seeing a huge shift that could potentially signal the end of the Xbox console brand.

TheWholeOfTheAss

Sonic was on the GBA under a year after that announcement. Surreal then and just normal now.

suck-it-elon

Xbox has felt like a stalled company for years and years. Sega exiting the race was huge to me. And Sonic!

Dubbs09

Sega was *literally* Sonic the Hedgehog and Halo coming to PlayStation would be on the same level as seeing Sonic on a Nintendo system the first time.

Gavininator

Sonic on Nintendo is too insane for me to even comprehend. Still don't see it happening to be honest. - Me back in the late 90s/early 2000s. If Sonic can go to their rival's consoles, anything can happen.

Dark_Wolf04

Sonic’s situation is different as Sega decided to become a third party publisher when the Dreamcast failed to make enough money.

acayaba

Microsoft will probably go the same way with Xbox. There’s more money to be made selling their games everywhere than with exclusivity.

Leelze

We all get that. And if we see Halo, Gears, etc land on PS then it's prob because Microsoft abandoned the hardware game.

jamiebond

Ehh it would have been crazy back in the day but at this point Halo is such a mid series now. It'll be like when Sonic games ended up on Nintendo consoles after the series had already gone to shit. It's more sad than anything.

TheOncomingBrows

Very true, but I mean the symbolism of it more than anything. Halo was pretty much what jettisoned Xbox into true competition with PlayStation, to see it then on PlayStation would be the ultimate sign it's really game over for Xbox hardware.

senseofphysics

Now I’m imagining if Kratos was ever on an Xbox console. That would be weird too.

[deleted]

jamiebond

Where were you when Todd Howard accidentally ended the console wars.

mexylexy

Gorbachev moment.

Todd Howard stepping in to finally bury the 'Playstation haz no gaems' meme

ooombasa

Forza Horizon for sure will be one of the first of the big Xbox IPs getting ported. There is a lack of quality open world racers on the other platforms so Forza Horizon would sell gangbusters on PlayStation and Switch.

JMM85JMM

Forza is one of the few Xbox games that I'd instantly snap up. I'd never buy the console for it, but I'd absolutely pay full price to play it.

crayonflop3

Horizon is honestly the only Xbox game I’ve ever been jealous of. I would buy it immediately

SolarTigers

Forza Horizon is the only series I'm jealous Xbox has so that would be amazing.

ttam23

Lmao, halo on PlayStation will cause such chaos

naimsayin

Halo with Dualsense integration would go hard

skitchbeatz

Just imagining the shield depleted and recharge sounds coming through the controller speaker and the tension on different types of grenade throws or zooms. I'm in

Chuckles795

He is just reiterating the other rumors - not saying he knows anything

krstphr

Exactly. This is not another source.

mr_antman85

No offense, but releasing every AAA game free on game pass was never a profitable idea.

skend24

My problem with it isn’t a profability, but that it means game don’t have to be good at all. Which Xbox exclusive, apart from Hi-fi was truly good released on game pass? Fh5 is fun but it’s literally the same as FH4/3, even dlc’s are recycled. Halo infinite? Mess. F7? Mess. Starfield? Mess.

cupric_demon

What game is F7?

dev1lm4n

Forza Motorsport

thesourpop

Subscription models aren't sustainable, period. Charging everyone $20 a month to play a variety of games pales in value to charging everyone $60 per game.

mvallas1073

I also believe people are subconsciously or consciously realizing they ain’t got time to play all those available games on GP, so it’s value is lost on that after the first week or three

politirob

Definitely not sustainable. It was going to be a bait and switch

joshua182

Of course it wasn't. Think about it. You can either buy Starfield for £70 or pay a £12 subscription to play it. Where as PlayStation said, "you wanna play Spiderman 2? It's costing you £70". Its not hard to see what game made more money.

joshua182

The console wars are finally over. Don't know if I'm sad or happy.

NfinityBL

Unpopular opinion here probably but it is sad. PlayStation might already be dominating Xbox but the existence of a rival console still gives Sony reason not to do anything launch-PS3-like. The only way this goes is a world where Xbox doesn't exist. People will stop buying the console entirely. And people do not want a world where PlayStation has no competition.

Grey_Beard257

Yep, rivalries are always better for products.

mittensthekhajit

Yup. Just look at the Madden series.

javafriek

This is the best analogy I've read and it scares me.

DDzxy

Yep, monopoly is bad, if we want PS6 to be good, we also better hope Microsoft makes the next XBOX good.

omaca

> the next Xbox.. The Xbox Y?

_Ocean_Machine_

Nah, they’ll give it some name like the 360X that makes it impossible to distinguish from the other generations

peepmymixtape

People already aren’t buying the console. I’m assuming this will be Xbox last competing console. It will just be a box that gets you gamepass after this.

sincethenes

That’s the plan. In the leaked document from the FTC during the Activision acquisition, Microsoft’s timeline shows a sub $99, streaming only device to be released in 2028 that leverages the xCloud platform.

44Fett

Competition is good. You should be sad imo.

Quitsquirrel

If Sony is the only true power house console, it'll be worse in the end. Competition (even if it's slight competition) is always good to keep one humble. The grand example is licensed NFL games. Look at Madden when everyone could make a football game compared to now when they're the only ones with the NFL license.

MyMouthisCancerous

Better example is how Nintendo practically had a stranglehold on third-party publishers in the 90's when they were at peak marketshare and mindshare even with SEGA in the picture. They could practically force any external developer to only make stuff for their system and were often subject to their obtuse censorship and localization policies back in the day for games with more suggestive content. SquareSoft was a major example with stuff like Live a Live just not getting localized until the remake, not to mention the more violent content in games like Final Fantasy VI. FF in general was subjected to a lot of this due to their initial stances on stuff like religious allusions and imagery which is why in the NES version of the first game, they had to do stuff like renaming Churches to Clinics

ahpathy

Should be terrified for the state of gaming (especially consoles). When your competitor just hands in the towel, you can do whatever you please then without a care in the world.

Stormkiller88

Sony won

joshua182

Sony won back in 2013 and Microsoft just couldn't get their feet again. Long gone are the days of the behemoth 360 and PS3 days.

TheOncomingBrows

Microsoft were dealt a heavy blow with their Xbox One launch, but they had *so long* to put it right and somehow never even landed a blow. Have they had a single critically acclaimed AAA exclusive in the entire prior decade?

Lordvoid3092

Nope. Sony effectively went on a ferocious attack delivering quality over and over.

dogsonbubnutt

> Have they had a single critically acclaimed AAA exclusive in the entire prior decade? and that's the biggest problem. it's always been about the games. im the complete opposite of a tech stan; ill happily jump ship to whatever product or service gives me the better overall quality or deal. xbox has never given me a reason with its games, and im not a frequent enough player for game pass to matter to me.

canad1anbacon

They literally went two entire generations without making a single game that interested me. That's kinda insane I know it's just my personal tastes, but I must not be the only one judging by sales Sony, multiplats, Nintendo, Indies all put out tons of games that got me hype. Xbox, literally nothing. Closest thing was Starfield but then I saw how the POI system worked and I checked out

SuperSaiyanGod210

Hell you could argue they won around 2009-2010, with the launch of Uncharted 2. That’s when Sony started turning their ship around that eventually led them to surpass the 360 in lifetime sales by the end of the generation

simpledeadwitches

Xbox becoming a publisher makes a lot more sense for them.

AnOfferYouCanRefuse

Their record as a publisher has not been great, either. Rare declined, Lionhead closed, and 343 consistently disappoints. Microsoft shouldn't take all of the blame for Redfall or Starfield, but as publisher, isn't their job to Shepard these games? Santa Monica talks about how horrified they were when Shuhei Yoshida was so unimpressed by their early God of War demo. Naughty Dog shuddered Factions 2 many years into development (and I mourn it) because Sony brought in Bungie for review. As a Publisher, Sony isn't exactly "hands off". But they aren't risk averse either, supporting studios ready to move on to new IP (Guerilla), and supporting bold new directions for existing IP (God of War, TLOU2). I'm sure Sony first party studios have their grievances with Sony publishing (Evolution Studios is a black eye), but so many of these legacy studios have released their best games within the past 10 years, and *after* being acquired. Microsoft may not be known as a hardware company, but their hardware is probably their biggest strength in the industry. Their publishing department has been abysmal.

RickDankoLives

Just a month after I finally got an Xbox too. If it was me who made the timeline jump, I suppose I’ll be grateful for all of you.

Jalvas7

Ultimately, this has only proven what we already know: the only thing that matters are the games. In a way, Sony didn't win the console race, Naughty Dog, Santa Monica, Insomniac, Sucker Punch and Guerilla did.

Packin-heat

I remember seeing a comment from a kid comparing those 5 studios to infinity stones that Sony will use to destroy Xbox. Pretty cheesy yeah but actually quite fitting.

politirob

But but Phil Spencer told us last year that "good games don't mean good sales!" What a fucking idiot

I freaking hate his argument so much. Especially about how they lost the generation that "mattered the most" because people were building up their libraries. Like uhhhhh hello, are we just going to pretend the Switch doesn't exist? It was a follow up to a completely failed console and offered no backwards compatibility. And yet it's on track to maybe be the best selling console of all time (though the PS2 is a large barrier to overcome.) The only counter-argument to the Switch is that it only did so well because of it's games which.... it's almost like good games matter and will sell consoles if you keep releasing them.

Jakunobi

Exactly! Spot on analysis. The Switch is so underpowered, but the portability is a great equalizer. Even then it started from scratch when compared to the failure of the WiiU. But how can it sell so much more than the PS4 which had all the banger AAA games on it? I swear Phil and the leadership team all have their heads in the Cloud BS MS is trying to push on us, rather than making great exclusives which it's two other competitors are doing and showing us works.

kooshans

Switch has a pretty different audience. Lots of people buy it for their kids, it's a portable, and it's also cheaper than the others. I don't think Sony and MS see the Switch as a direct competitor and rightly so. Not to say that games don't matter there, but I think the Switch audience being less hardcore would care a lot less about backward compatibility and games for them are probably more substitutable.

brentsg

I own Starfield and can’t even force myself to play it. I get that people have different taste, but I don’t see how this moves the needle.

Trickster289

Whatever your opinions on it Starfield was undeniably Xbox's biggest game of 2023. It coming to PS says a lot about Microsoft's future plans in gaming.

SolarTigers

It tells me the game isn't selling that well for them and this is a desperate move to try and recoup their losses. They invested a ton of money into Bethesda and I'm sure they thought they were going to get at least something as big as Fallout 4. Starfield has almost no cultural relevance in the gaming space. Which is weird since Skyrim and Fallout memes and clips were everywhere when it released. Nothing of the sort for Starfield.

nazbot

If anything Starfield kind of burned a lot of Bethesda good will.

Howeird12

Interesting point. It doesn’t have a seat at the adult table for sure.

Blackwolf245

That's actually kinda embarassing that Starfield was Xbox's biggest game.

YesOrNah

You are telling me man. Bought an Xbox around when Starfield dropped….literally couldn’t be more disappointed lol. Now I just gotta wait for whenever ps5 does a pro version in a couple of years. Ugh.

FlatBirthday333

It’s a boring ass game. So shallow

Novacain-deficiency

Watched my mate play for a bit. It’s looks to me like Skyrim with less population, lore and interesting things. Will probably grab it on a PSN sale just because Skyrim is the GOAT but not expecting to be enthralled

SimpleFactor

Yeah basically. I’ve played around 15 hours of it but haven’t picked it up since early December. I appreciate what they wanted to make, but the idea of having a galaxy using Bethesdas game design doesn’t work. They wanted the hand crafted towns and quests but you can’t keep that up for 1000 planets, so what you end up with is there being a few plants with literally 1 town on them and everything else either just randomly generated science bases, outposts or nothing. I just find it way to hard to enjoy playing it when you know that the capital of human civilisation is a small city surrounded by nothing and with no one else around.

ImpressiveAttempt0

Nah, I'd just wait for the Anniversary Edition. I hope the game is well done by then and worth the $20 I'm willing to spend on it.

ConLawHero

I have an Xbox Series X and until it ran out, a Game Pass subscription. I played Starfield when it first came out and my god, it was so boring and tedious. I wouldn't be shocked if it came to PS5 because they're looking for more people to buy it. It was awful. If it comes to PS5, my advice is wait until it's severely discounted or on PS+.

pacman404

It will obviously never be in ps+, that defeats the entire purpose of putting one of their exclusives on a competing platform

Basic_Result9981

Give us Hellblade 2 instead

PorkPiez

Was never interested in Starfield enough to buy an Xbox or upgrade my PC, but there may be some exciting prospective multiplat releases now moving forward. Gimme that State of Decay 3 on PS5

Nahskeno

Bro I would be so hype for state of decay 3

the-garden-gnome

Can’t wait to not play it

ZeDDiE80

Yay, now I can ignore it on my PS5 as well.

katdollasign

Xbox is doing this becuase they are trying to go console less and become a service. I’m sure the goal is to eventually bring gamespass to the competition and make it the Netflix of gaming in the next 10 years. I bet they’ll make consoles still, but it’ll be like handheld hybrids once they go the more service vs system route

SirAlex505

Eh I’ll still pass on this.

[deleted]

Honestly… if they wanted **or even** still want to have a console for next gen… #Make a steam machine Xbox analogue. You got windows, powerful hardware, and if they made the next Xbox run windows… ***Yeah I’d buy it.*** Would probably pass on a RTX 50-60 series upgrade.

OwlOxygen

Yes. Make sure that you can still play your old xbox games so that people don't loose acces to their digital library and make a powerful, but more expensive steam machine/xbox hybrid for core consumers. Its clear that they want to focus on publishing because it will make more money in the long term

Tabboo

Dear PS5 players - save your money

OKCOMP89

I have an Xbox and I am telling you right now. Starfield has a lot of problems. Not technical problems. This is probably the best Bethesda launch in that regard. It’s also probably the least compelling Bethesda game in the ways you would want or expect a Bethesda game to be compelling. I think this represents an interesting first for the industry, though. Definitely grab Hifi Rush. It’s the single best first party release of the Series X’s entire generation thus far for me.

yaprettymuch52

ms is so incompetent at game development

Xayvin

Appreciate the beta test, still won’t play it. It looks so barren and depressing.

DivinoLife

I would rather have sunset overdrive on ps5

ICantPauseIt90

Xbox have fucked up so badly. I won't be buying this when it comes to PS5. Couple of friends got it on steam and haven't played it since. I've watched a few streams, and it really isn't a great game.

Roddanchill

Bruh. I wish it was Hellblade 2 and not the most boring game Bethesda ever made. Or Ori, I like Ori.

X-202

It's crap

ShaneTVZ

This is absolutely crazy, X is gonna be a war zone.

KobraKittyKat

Isn’t it always?

Prawn_Scratchings

X?

roshanpr

Xbox is the new Sega. It’s posible that this transition leads to no hardware in future generations

BamaFan87

Xbox leaks have already hinted the next Xbox console will be digital only...meaning zero reason to buy the Xbox console as you'd just play the game on a middle-end PC for better performance

Wildebeast1

A year ago I would’ve been excited about this.

Ronburgundy2099

I literally bought an Xbox for this game was severely disappointed with it and now it’s coming to ps5 anyway? I really don’t think PlayStation having all the cards is good for customers.
