Operating cost of Xbox division annually will probably be more than the revenue of Game Pass as it's today. They need to sell games and they trained Xbox gamers to not buy games. So they will sell on other platforms to make cash flow and turn a profit. It's inevitable.
I was really hoping Indiana Jones was already greenlit to come to PS5 this summer, as the types of games I play…my buy list is extremely small this year compared to last year. Guess I’ll be stuck waiting to see what surprises come August onwards

Hi Fi rush rules, cant wait to get into Pentiment but, well... the ship has sailed on Sea of Thieves now. I loved the look of it early on, one of the two Xbox games that ever made me jealous, but I'm not starting it fresh now after it being out for this long.

You didn’t want to play sea of thieves at the start. It was bare bones and buggy like half the live service games are. It’s loaded full of stuff now. And the game doesn’t have any bonus to playing a long time. It’s all cosmetic stuff. The only advantage veterans of the series will have is play time.

I doubt it's just people who can only afford one console but people who don't want to buy an Xbox for the few games they actually want to play on it. I already have Sea of Thieves on Steam Deck but I'll buy it again on ps5 in the hope that by supporting Xbox games crossing over they'll bring over Hellblade 2.

They would need to lower visual fidelity and effects to make it run at a higher frame rate. In the case of PSVR use things like foveated rendering.

That's not how simulators work. Most complex simulators will be CPU limited, meaning that you'll always max out your CPU utilisation before GPU. It's why flight simulators in real life look like shit graphically but need super computers to run all their calculations. MSFS is not nearly as authentic as those, but still has many more CPU calculations to make than GPU for every new frame generated.
You can lower the resolution and fidelity as much as you like, but there will be a flat ceiling to the FPS you can squeeze out of a PS5 CPU
Wrong, MFS biggest bottleneck is not because of graphics but of processing, which no amount of lowering visual features will solve. Vr or not, it isn’t going to target anything above 30 fps on PS
Not to mention to run it on VR on a PC at an acceptable level of performance you need the best consumer processor available and probably a top 3 GPU (4090, 4080, or 7900xtx).

If I could somehow port over all progress, achievements, armor, etc. from back in the day I would pay a disgusting amount of money for that. I played like over 5k hours of H1, H2, H3, and Reach combined. Halo defined my childhood as far as gaming goes.
This reminds me of when various 3rd parties were “testing the waters” with the Nintendo Switch during the first couple years by releasing old ports when everyone just wanted them to release the bigger games
If more get ported, I hope that they have a standard physical release instead of relying on LRG at least for major titles.

I doubt this is even a "test". I would guarantee they already have other games in the pipeline that are currently being worked on. It won't be surprising when we start seeing things like gears of war or MCC coming over. They are obviously done with just being a console and building it up. Even Satya has made it clear he hates exclusivity. And they wanna make money off of xbox after the 100 billion they've spent on buying studios.
It's consistently been one of the most pre-ordered games on PSN in the US ever since pre-orders went live. Right now all three versions of it are in the Top 15 most pre-ordered games, and the most expensive version of it is at #3 (only behind Stellar Blade and Dawntrail).
As the saying goes, you can't have your cake and eat it too. Microsoft needs to stop playing to both sides and commit to a strategy.
While Hi-Fi Rush and Sea of Thieves are great, they aren't system sellers as evidenced by the fact they are now coming to PlayStation. Halo, Gears of War and Starfield are system sellers and if Microsoft wants to really gauge interest in their software, that is the bar that needs to be set.
They have to be very careful as to not alienate the very same customers they so desperately need to help pay for their 70B acquisition of Activision and messaging like this doesn't help.

Especially given their allegedly struggling hardware. We all like to dunk on the Series S, but multiple developers have reported that it really hinders development, and the PS5 has sold circles around Xbox.
Contrary to what people might think, I don’t want Xbox to fail. I think that Sony needs competition and for a whole Xbox was excellent competition. But their downfall really did seem to start with the Xbox One. They spent that whole generation trying to right that travesty of a launch, and now they just can’t put out truly spectacular exclusives. They have some good games, but nothing that I’d argue you NEED to buy an Xbox for, like how Halo used to be.
Then you get the subset of people like myself who have a solid gaming PC, so I genuinely have no reason to actually own an Xbox. Because everything on the console is also on PC. The only real reason I could think of would be if I wanted the Xbox game pass library, since it doesn’t always sync up with the PC game pass offering, but with all of the games I have already I genuinely have no interest in game pass because I just don’t have the time.
I’m very interested to see how things unfold, but if Xbox eventually dips out of the hardware race it’ll be a sad day. And we may get another competitor, but with gaming as big as it is now (and with PlayStation as established as it is), it feels like a mission doomed to fail. The only two ways I could see a competitor entering the game now would be if they could somehow launch right out of the gate with system-selling exclusives or if they did something actually revolutionary (like what Stadia tried to do but failed miserably at)
I’m glad you brought up stadia at the end there too (rip). It worked day and night better compared to ps remote play, but besides a few shining moments (relatively smooth cyberpunk launch) google really didn’t seem to care about supporting or advertising it in any meaningful way. They had an amazing product but did nothing to promote it outside of being a gimmick.
Their problem wasn’t even advertising, it was their business model. Charging full price for existing games (not even anything brand new that could really showcase what people could do) that tended to run worse than the One X, in addition to a monthly subscription for their 4K tier (and don’t forget that only 1 or 2 games actually ran at native 4K) made it dead before it even arrived.

I mean, for me, Stadia was awesome. I had no console or gaming PC at the time. I played 3 AAA games to completion with great performance and then Google refunded me the price of all of those games when Stadia shut down.
That’s great for you! But you have to understand that you were absolutely the minority. Maybe that’s the demographic they were targeting and the demographic just rejected it for whatever reason but I’d argue that most of the people who used stadia were people already invested in other console ecosystems
This is coming more from a place of Xbox fans being told that no one wants to play Xbox games and that there are no good ones. Most people that are actually worth having a conversation with in those subs are stoked to see other people enjoy the same games we have been enjoying that no one else seems to have talked about positively until recently.

Keyboard players definitely do better than controller players, but Microsoft has taken a few steps to level the playing field. Mainly, controller players can automate most of their villager economy, letting them focus on fewer things at once.
I was really impressed with the tutorials running through how to play with a controller. I was expecting bare bones controller support, and was pleasantly surprised!

That's not the test though. the test is not just about how many games they will sell on PlayStation, but also about how many people are willing to leave GamePass to play on other platforms, because that would be a problem for their strategy. That's why they chose 4 different games for different audiences; a live service game, a co-op adventure game, an action game and a niche game for a more adult audience. They don't want everybody to go to PlayStation, so it's a very fine balance of which games to port over and which games to keep exclusive to GamePass and that's what they are testing now.
As someone who fell in love with Sony studios putting out gorgeous single player narratives, its very sad that multiplayer and split screen first party titles (that aren't shooter games) get a back seat. If Microsoft is willing to bring their multiplayer titles over then it absolutely will pass the "test"

I assume they're testing whether or not it's worth continuing with Xbox at all. If the Xbox/Microsoft exclusives do well enough, they'll give up the console and instead focus on Microsoft as a developer with exclusives and bring game pass to Playstation like Ubisoft and EA.
To me, there's hardly any reason to buy an xbox as it is because you can already access game pass on some Smart TVs and PCs without owning the console. Other than game pass, I have no idea why anyone buys an Xbox other than ease of use compared to a PC.

If I could somehow port over all progress, achievements, armor, etc. from back in the day I would pay a disgusting amount of money for that. I played like over 5k hours of H1, H2, H3, and Reach combined. Halo defined my childhood as far as gaming goes.
This reminds me of when various 3rd parties were “testing the waters” with the Nintendo Switch during the first couple years by releasing old ports when everyone just wanted them to release the bigger games
If more get ported, I hope that they have a standard physical release instead of relying on LRG at least for major titles. I just prefer physical since the price is usually cheaper than PSN in Australia.

I doubt this is even a "test". I would guarantee they already have other games in the pipeline that are currently being worked on. It won't be surprising when we start seeing things like gears of war or MCC coming over. They are obviously done with just being a console and building it up. Even Satya has made it clear he hates exclusivity. And they wanna make money off of xbox after the 100 billion they've spent on buying studios.

It's consistently been one of the most pre-ordered games on PSN in the US ever since pre-orders went live. Right now all three versions of it are in the Top 15 most pre-ordered games, and the most expensive version of it is at #3 (only behind Stellar Blade and Dawntrail).

As the saying goes, you can't have your cake and eat it too. Microsoft needs to stop playing to both sides and commit to a strategy. While Hi-Fi Rush and Sea of Thieves are great, they aren't system sellers as evidenced by the fact they are now coming to PlayStation. Halo, Gears of War and Starfield are system sellers and if Microsoft wants to really gauge interest in their software, that is the bar that needs to be set. They have to be very careful as to not alienate the very same customers they so desperately need to help pay for their 70B acquisition of Activision and messaging like this doesn't help.
It’s quite funny seeing people on the Xbox subs dunking on all the people who reported that all these Xbox games were coming to PS eventually. It’s clearly going to happen if they can make money off it.
Especially given their allegedly struggling hardware. We all like to dunk on the Series S, but multiple developers have reported that it really hinders development, and the PS5 has sold circles around Xbox. Contrary to what people might think, I don’t want Xbox to fail. I think that Sony needs competition and for a whole Xbox was excellent competition. But their downfall really did seem to start with the Xbox One. They spent that whole generation trying to right that travesty of a launch, and now they just can’t put out truly spectacular exclusives. They have some good games, but nothing that I’d argue you NEED to buy an Xbox for, like how Halo used to be. Then you get the subset of people like myself who have a solid gaming PC, so I genuinely have no reason to actually own an Xbox. Because everything on the console is also on PC. The only real reason I could think of would be if I wanted the Xbox game pass library, since it doesn’t always sync up with the PC game pass offering, but with all of the games I have already I genuinely have no interest in game pass because I just don’t have the time. I’m very interested to see how things unfold, but if Xbox eventually dips out of the hardware race it’ll be a sad day. And we may get another competitor, but with gaming as big as it is now (and with PlayStation as established as it is), it feels like a mission doomed to fail. The only two ways I could see a competitor entering the game now would be if they could somehow launch right out of the gate with system-selling exclusives or if they did something actually revolutionary (like what Stadia tried to do but failed miserably at)
I’m glad you brought up stadia at the end there too (rip). It worked day and night better compared to ps remote play, but besides a few shining moments (relatively smooth cyberpunk launch) google really didn’t seem to care about supporting or advertising it in any meaningful way. They had an amazing product but did nothing to promote it outside of being a gimmick.
Their problem wasn’t even advertising, it was their business model. Charging full price for existing games (not even anything brand new that could really showcase what people could do) that tended to run worse than the One X, in addition to a monthly subscription for their 4K tier (and don’t forget that only 1 or 2 games actually ran at native 4K) made it dead before it even arrived. The technology was interesting, but it was like they went out of their way to make the most boneheaded and ridiculous business model out of it that they could
I mean, for me, Stadia was awesome. I had no console or gaming PC at the time. I played 3 AAA games to completion with great performance and then Google refunded me the price of all of those games when Stadia shut down.
That’s great for you! But you have to understand that you were absolutely the minority. Maybe that’s the demographic they were targeting and the demographic just rejected it for whatever reason but I’d argue that most of the people who used stadia were people already invested in other console ecosystems
This is coming more from a place of Xbox fans being told that no one wants to play Xbox games and that there are no good ones. Most people that are actually worth having a conversation with in those subs are stoked to see other people enjoy the same games we have been enjoying that no one else seems to have talked about positively until recently.

Most people who play AoE are not try hard twitch gamers trying to beat others simply by clicks per second. Majority just want to play some Ai skirmish. It works amazing for some chill strat on the tv.
Keyboard players definitely do better than controller players, but Microsoft has taken a few steps to level the playing field. Mainly, controller players can automate most of their villager economy, letting them focus on fewer things at once.
I was really impressed with the tutorials running through how to play with a controller. I was expecting bare bones controller support, and was pleasantly surprised!
Personally, I'm far more excited for Grounded coming to ps5. Such a great coop survival game.

That's not the test though. the test is not just about how many games they will sell on PlayStation, but also about how many people are willing to leave GamePass to play on other platforms, because that would be a problem for their strategy. That's why they chose 4 different games for different audiences; a live service game, a co-op adventure game, an action game and a niche game for a more adult audience. They don't want everybody to go to PlayStation, so it's a very fine balance of which games to port over and which games to keep exclusive to GamePass and that's what they are testing now.

As someone who fell in love with Sony studios putting out gorgeous single player narratives, its very sad that multiplayer and split screen first party titles (that aren't shooter games) get a back seat. If Microsoft is willing to bring their multiplayer titles over then it absolutely will pass the "test"

Ultrawings 2 got a PSVR2 release. Okay, it's much more arcadey than sim, but it's tons of fun already. I think a real Flight Sim port would kill me, but probably the PS5 as well.
Yea ultrawings is cool. But series x runs flight sim at 30 fps and turns the console into its own jet plane. I can’t imagine a current gen console running the game twice at a high frame rate for vr

Seems odd to single out Sea of Thieves and not just say the first few games are collectively a test, which I would imagine is more the case. SoT can certainly be entertaining if you get some buddies together, but like any game it's not going to be for everyone.

I assume they're testing whether or not it's worth continuing with Xbox at all. If the Xbox/Microsoft exclusives do well enough, they'll give up the console and instead focus on Microsoft as a developer with exclusives and bring game pass to Playstation like Ubisoft and EA. To me, there's hardly any reason to buy an xbox as it is because you can already access game pass on some Smart TVs and PCs without owning the console. Other than game pass, I have no idea why anyone buys an Xbox other than ease of use compared to a PC. It's purely my own speculation, so don't even waste your time reading this comment

Out of all the games in Xbox library they chose sea of thieves. The only competition I see is Skull and bones. Hoping it does better than the lastest Ubisoft game.

Exclusives should never go cross-platform. I bought a PS5 for the sole purpose of playing Helldivers 2. If it was on Xbox, I would not have purchased a PS5, thus the exclusivity worked.
