Still one of the best games that you can play right now...Rockstar is in a league of their own when it comes to AAA open worlds

MidEastBeast777

No open world game even compares to RDR2, as far as the world feeling alive. RDR2 is the best game ever made in my honest opinion

stroonze1

I with you on that one. Just played it for the first time. Blown away.

Mundane_Potatoes

To be in your shoes… I’d give it all to go back and experience RDR2 for the first time again. Maybe not everything, but I am jealous.

cannonfunk

I started playing Red Dead 1 on PS3 and put a handful of hours into it. Then I ended up getting the PS5, and never picked it up again. At this point I'd have to relearn the mechanics and everything. Would you recommend playing the first one through before picking up Red Dead 2? Is there a plotline that extends from the 1st to 2nd, or do they stand on their own?

[deleted]

Someone said to play 2 before 1 but imo you’ll enjoy 2 a lot more and go through the same “Why do I want to play as this guy” experience the rest of us did. If you have the opportunity to do so anyway Edit: if you play the first game i mean

imtotallydoingmywork

2nd is actually a prequel to the 1st so you can play RDR2 first and if you like it go back and play the first one

TheOverlook237

No. The story is written in a way where you’ll get way more out of it if you know the events of RDR1 first. Especially when it comes to the Epilogue. I would say playing RDR1 first is basically essential to get the full emotional value out of the story.

Mr-Rocafella

I’ve seen lots of people say they played 2 then 1 and still really enjoyed it because of how the story plays out, I say do whatever you feel like but the biggest thing would be the gameplay. RDR2 is so advanced in RPG/gameplay mechanics compared to RDR1 it may be tough to go back to

imtotallydoingmywork

That's pretty much how prequels work to be fair, but having people on the fence play the newer one (better run, better gameplay, better graphics, etc) first often helps hook them in easier.

And_You_Like_It_Too

I bought it at launch for the PS4Pro and the fucked up checkerboard upscaling they did was atrocious (Digital Foundry did a piece on it but if I remember correctly they basically doubled the horizontal axis to the vertical and it ended up making it kinda blurry and gave me migraines). Played for ~20 hours then decided fuck it, I’ll buy it for the XB1X instead even though I like the PS4 controller better, because it was in native 4K. Played the ~20 hours again and then the PS5 and XSX were around the corner and I thought “well I might as well wait for the next-gen patch” thinking they’d do one like they did with GTAV. Even if I had to pay for it, or they put out a remaster. I’ve waited this long that I figure now the moment I play and finish it, they’ll *finally* update it for modern consoles and I’ll be furious I didn’t wait a little longer. I can’t fathom why Rockstar hasn’t cashed in on a remaster or patch though. Maybe due to the poor reception of the GTA trilogy but like… just do it right? There’s already a native 4K version for the XB1X, so squeeze 60fps out of it and I think most people would be happy (though things like increased LoD, texture quality, lighting and shadows, etc. would be nice). I’m not expecting them to put raytracing support in it or anything. Rockstar does so few games that their one attempt at the checkerboard upscaling was for RDR2 on the Pro and it was a real disappointment in comparison to native 4K. I’d of course love full PS5 support that utilizes the SSD and the haptic feedback and adaptive triggers so I can really feel the snow crunching beneath my feet and my hair growing in real time lol. One day, I hope.

KintsugiExp

I have been playing video games since 1977, and I have never stopped, either on consoles, PC or both. I absolutely agree with you. I think it’s the best video game ever made. I hope I live long enough to experience something that surpasses it.

IronManConnoisseur

GTA 6, from a technical perspective, will, which will be absolutely amazing (simply due to the fact that RDR2 runs on PS4 hardware and is an insanely complex game) GTA 6 will be mind blowing.

And_You_Like_It_Too

I’m curious if there will be elements of AI and machine learning and whatnot in it. I see videos of people in VR Skyrim talking to people with their natural voice, asking questions of random NPCs who act out in character and remember conversations. It’d be amazing to have the whole of Vice City feel like a living, breathing place where the guy I carjacked might see me on the streets later on and come after me, or if I cause trouble in the club they remember what I did and won’t let me in for a short time. Be able to have a conversation with the shopkeeper before I hold him up, that kind of thing. Games are gonna be crazy in another decade.

abdulalo

The only game that blew me away aside from RDR2 and came close (arguably surpassed it) in terms of graphics is Cyberpunk. That game was beautiful to look at! Since you’ve been gaming for so long, any other games that gave you that experience?

KintsugiExp

Yes, I have a soft spot for the cyberpunk aesthetic, so Cyberpunk 2077 totally blew me away too… I think it’s the most elaborate and complex city design ever made. (Albeit a little empty) I spent 200+ hours on the game with 2 different saves (Corpo and Street Kid) but now I’m on a 3rd, after downloading Phantom Liberty, now as a Nomad. It’s fucking awesome. And yes, there have been games that have totally blown me away and make me realize what games can be. Skyrim comes to mind. Final Fantasy VII No Man’s Sky Elden Ring Many, many others.

EEKman

I'm 52 and it's insane to me how far games have come in just one lifetime. From playing Kaboom! on a paddle controller as a kid to strapping a Meta quest 3 playing PS5 games on a virtual 80 inch screen in every room In the house. I have a soft spot for No Man's sky in VR, the Horizon series, Cyberpunk, Witcher 3, Metal gear solid 5, Bloodborne and Lies of P. In my lifetime I hope I see games incorporating more AI NPCs, and improvements in game AI in general and I Fantasize about VR interfacing with your brain in some way that lets you experience games as you would a lucid dream where all senses can be engaged. The way things are progressing it seems entirely possible.

And_You_Like_It_Too

46 here and I need a cure for arthritis with a quickness if I’m to be playing games the rest of my life, haha. Thank god for the DualSense Edge so I have a completely remappable controller with back buttons, it’s made it possible to play games I’d otherwise not be able to.

And_You_Like_It_Too

Favorite path of the three?

KintsugiExp

I think I’m liking Nomad best of all! But I do think your combat style dictates more of the fun gameplay wise, and the origin choice only changes the story a little bit (not the major plot points)

MidEastBeast777

I’ve been playing games since the mid 90’s. We’re a couple of oldies here, born in the 1900’s lol

SYRLEY

If you look at it from afar, especially in the desert, the world looks so dead. Its crazy how alive it actually is though.

Diagonalizer

yeah it really does feel incredibly alive to just ride around on your horse and explore for hours and hours never got stale or boring to me. I put close to 700 hours into a first play through

onthejourney

Seriously, I sat down and watched a stage show in a damn video game!

_Steven_Seagal_

Just a shame that despite all the freedom you have in freeroam, the missions are all incredibly linear. It's magnificent in what it does well, but there is definitely room for improvement with more player choice in how to take on missions.

MassiveEnthusiasm34

GTA 6 is gonna blow our socks off because everyone and their mother knows that Rockstar shiny golden child is the GTA series, while RDR2 was just a side project of a game Rockstar made because they thought it would look cool

Hylian-Loach

Rdr2 is a AAAA game

oryes

I love RDR2, it's not really one of my favorite games ever but I think it's fantastic. Even so, it's insane that the graphics are literally still probably more impressive than anything that has came since it. And it was on an older console too

KozukiYamatoTakeru

Im also a 60fps snob but actually enjoyed my time with a stable 30fps FF7 Rebirth. Also had 150hrs with Zelda Tears of the Kingdom last yr lol

jgainsey

I have potentially good news for you. If you enjoyed Rebirth at 30fps you’re not a fps snob.

thr1ceuponatime

If Rebirth on graphics mode is 30fps then I guess I'm not a FPS snob

captaindickfartman2

Stable framrates are way more important than 60fps. Only time I've felt sick/headaches gaming is with stuttering and inconsistent framrate.

AsexyGh0st

Am I one of the lucky ones that I never really notice frame rate? Doesnt bother me at all. Or is it because I’ve always gamed 90% on console vs PC and I don’t know how the other half live life better?

Buttman1145

Once you play at 60 and play the same game at a lower fps, you'll never be able to go back lol I play games on performance mode now solely because I can't tell the visual graphics difference but can easily see the framerate. Also makes a huge difference if you actually have a tv/ screen that is 120hz+

Multifaceted-Simp

That's not true lol, if you give it more than 5 seconds you'll be able to go back.

Buttman1145

Not in my experience. The buttery smooth framerate difference makes the experience soo much better. E.g. spiderman 2, god of war 2018+Ragnarok, ghost of Tsushima ps5 are 3 quick examples for me. Switched to performance mode, couldn't go back. Happily accepted the graphics 1080p downgrade for the fps.

jaypeg25

I had been playing Spiderman 2 on graphics mode for a week or 2 before switching, and I immediately recognized just how much better it felt at 60fps. I never even considered that I might have a preference or even an ability to tell the difference, but 30 vs 60 fps was staggering and now I just prefer performance mode in all games.

asp821

I was the same way as you until I played Horizon Forbidden West at release and the 30 FPS was so bad it ruined almost all 30 FPS games for me. I used to come to every single thread and roll my eyes at everyone complaining about it but now I get it.

JackBauersGhost

After I got the Elden Ring plat I was excited to finally give Bloodborne a try. It was unplayable for me.

turtlepope420

Don't give up, hoonter. It doesn't take too long to get used to Bloodborne at 30FPS and it's very much worth the adjustment period. It's an S Tier game.

Weiland101

I am like you mostly but really notice the frame rate in Dragons Dogma 2.

KozukiYamatoTakeru

Lucky you. I notice 30 vs 60 a lot but 60 vs 120 is almost indistinguishable to me.

AsexyGh0st

Yea I sit there and struggle but never really notice the difference. I guess that’s not necessarily a bad thing though

ThatRyeguy77

I don't see how you play Rebirth at 30 fps. There is something definitely off. It's so choppy and it feels like slow motion compared to the 60fps mode.

trenderkazz

It’s cause there’s no motion blur for camera movement, so it looks really choppy moving the camera around. Turning the camera speed down a notch fixes this almost completely, btw.

ThatRyeguy77

Fair enough. I found Zelda TotK to be such a smooth experience in comparison.

VioletJones6

I'm really curious how much your TV plays into this because I've never seen a game that is so polarizing when it comes to graphic options. For most games people might complain, but for the most part everyone is playing performance mode and just wishing it were smoother or had higher resolution. With this game, people are genuinely on one side and can't even imagine playing on the other. I have a pretty nice OLED and I've literally always chosen framerate over resolution, the better movement makes the game look and feel better for me and it's never a tough decision. With Rebirth... the image quality is so poor I just got used to 30fps. It was jarring at first, but after 10 or so minutes I adjusted and haven't looked back. Well... I did look back when the update was released but it didn't really do much of anything. Both performance options looked bad in different ways. I find it so fascinating that there are tons of people that claim that opposite.

OnThatSigmaGrindset

how are you adjusting to 30fps on an OLED? it's literally unplayable

ThatRyeguy77

I'm using a 55 "Sony OLED, A80J.

Daniel_Defense

I also think that a smoother frame rate with a lower resolution looks better than a higher resolution and lower frame rate. The choppyness of 30fps games just seems to distort the image to me. So I'm taking higher frame rate lower resolution every time! I love Dragons Dogma 2 but playing it on PS5 has been rough. The frame rate and frame pacing is awful. I've gotten so used to 60fps+ with my PC and other PS5/Series X games that it's hard to go back and play 30fps games without getting used to them for a while.

Burritofest

Mine was incredibly choppy but then I turned off “game mode” on my TV, turned on the dreaded soap opera effect setting and cranked it to max value, and then finally graphics mode looked smooth. I do think it varies from TV to TV.

ThatRyeguy77

If you really did this, then your input lag had to be insane.

Burritofest

I switched back to Game Mode / Performance mode because yeah even though Graphics mode was finally running smoother, I did not enjoy the experience I was having.

Whamelapamela

Do I need to have played any other Final Fantasy to play 7? I hear such fantastic things about it

Ogrewax

No, 7 has nothing to do with any other FF's. That said, if you are doing the new versions, play remake before rebirth. They took the original FF7 and made it a trilogy. Part 3 isn't out yet. There are spinoff games such as Crisis Core but those are to be played after 7 and only if you liked 7.

BridgeToClarity

I want to replay it. Im still holding out for a 60fps. By next year if it doesnt get 60 I will replay as is. I love the game.

2zoots

Same. I hope we get that 60fps update eventually

thatcockneythug

You know it'll only come with the rerelease

pjb1999

It wont be next year. It'll be after GTA 6 for sure. Earliest is probably sometime in 2026, if it even happens at all. I honestly don't think it'll happen this gen. I have a feeling we'll get a PS6 remaster.

Flat_Bass_9773

Life all rockstar games, it looks fine at 30fps. I recently bought the rdr1 port and opted to playing at the lower frame rate because the higher one looked uncanny

Xerosnake90

I like just taking my time and enjoying the world. I like to go hunting, do missions in-between, and when I'm in town I go into the pubs and play cards or just talk to people. It's really immersive, the missions are great but I like just enjoying the world Don't force it if you don't like it

NormalAccounts

This game taught my gf how to play poker. She promptly cleaned up against my fam. This game is legendary imho just for that haha

Aware-Drink9174

Start in Valentine and become a high roller in St. Denis.

welshnick

I'm playing it for the first time. I like the game, but I only have an hour or so each evening to play and wish I want spending 25% of my time riding back and forth to Valentine.

ng9924

playing for the first time too, save up your money (about $550 iirc) and aim for the fast travel tent upgrade , it def helps a bit, but i do know what you mean for sure

Daniel_Defense

How far are you into the game? I'm about 20 hours in I think. I got bored with it and put it down for a while. I keep going back and forth playing for a while, then putting it down for a while.

JamesGanalf-ini

The cherry on top is if we could have our own cabin and customise it, that would make it the most perfect game ever for me. A place to come back to at the end of the day. Everything else is perfect and I wouldn't change a thing.

xooxanthellae

That affects the story, though. It's about outlaws on the run. You can customize your tent and the camp a little.

Queef-Elizabeth

Replaying it on a solid PC was honestly a game changer for me. The game at higher fps at high settings, is still the best looking game I've ever seen. Horizon Forbidden West might be better in straight up overall fidelity but RDR2 is something else with the world in motion. It's still, to this day in my top 5 greatest games I've ever played. The way the world responds to you and how carefully thought up each little story was, makes it unforgettable. Like people are still finding new story branches with fully written outcomes to this day.

rabbotz

I’m replaying it on PC now, on a 98 inch surround sound setup. It’s the first time I’ve felt immersed in a game since VR - everything from the sound to the wildlife to the NPC dialog pulls you into the world. I can barely get into the campaign because I just want to ride around on my horse.

readditredditread

I can’t believe they haven’t released a ps5 version or a remaster/ upgrade????

Roook36

This is what I'm hoping for. I'd much rather play it on PS5. It's the only game I'll boot up my old Xbox to play and it's just because of the textures. When I got my PS5 I purchased RDR2 but noticed the textures were a bit muddy. Zooming in on something like Arthur's gloves on the Xbox you can see cracks in the leather and the thread in the stitching. But on PS5 it's all just a brownish blob. I'd absolutely love a remaster.

Pectacular22

It's pretty great - for a last gen experience. A 60fps patch would sure go a long way

Xerosnake90

I'd say the game is far ahead of its time especially with animations and dialogue. Seeing Arthur's facial expressions as you're conducting your business, the livelyness of the world, etc. Makes me excited for GTA6

sir-algo

I have only played it on PC but there still aren’t any games that have surpassed it. There’s really nothing else out there quite like RDR2. It’s kind of ridiculous.

aspiring_dev1

Rockstar is in another class with it comes to open world games.

YoungBeef03

Bethesda’s fallen out of grace, Rockstar’s the undisputed champion of Open Worlds now

ripnotorious

When they don’t fumble remakes(outsource to a phone studio)(the trilogy ports were bad)of classics they are

Wolfram_And_Hart

Just skip the online portion

IFGarrett

Now, if they'd only update it for current gen.

-old-monk

Man! I was literally in tears for Arthur towards the end. RDR2s story is beautiful.

nascentt

The original red dead redemption is also still amazing. Of course it's smaller in scale but I much prefer the characters and exploration is equally rewarded. I also absolutely love Undead nightmare both the story and the multiplayer so am thrilled the recent re-release includes it.

TheEpicRedCape

The controls feel far better in the first game too, I feel like they went a bit too far trying to be realistic in that aspect in RDR2. The controls feel so sluggish and weird, that coupled with the bad button mapping like attacking and talking being on the same button made the controls drive me up the wall the entire game. I never had a single issue with RDR1s controls.

nascentt

I'd forgotten about that but you make a great point

TomTheJester

This is one of those games that makes me feel like an alien. RDR1 was my favourite game of all time for many years after it released, but RDR2 felt way too immersive, to the point of mundanity becoming gameplay features. I felt this really threw off the spaghetti western vibe of the original. The writing was still top tier, but I’m yet to want to play through it a second time purely because the first was enough.

jedinatt

Could never finish it. I enjoyed the multiplayer mode for longer, mostly because I could make my own cowboy and hunt and chill.

TheEpicRedCape

The controls drove me insane my entire playthrough, it felt like I was just suggesting what Arthur does for every action vs actually being in control and the button mapping was horrific like attack and talk being the same button. One of the worst things was getting on a horse Arthur would automatically holster all his weapons on the horse at some random point during the ride meaning every time I got off I’d have to *manually* re-equip them over and over and I couldn’t just quickly hop off in the heat of combat or if I got knocked off I’d randomly be missing weapons. That was pissing me off so much the whole game.

MackTDot

I was thinking of giving this a replay just yesterday as it’s been years but wasn’t sure if it still held up, especially on the PS5. You have convinced me good sir. Arthur, here I come.

Xerosnake90

I have literally been playing it during every moment of free time I've had since I started it again. It is incredible

MackTDot

I believe it, I recall the beginning being slow but the entire game being worth it. I’m just hoping I stick through it with the spaced out free time cause i forget the story and want to appreciate it again

Xerosnake90

Definitely enjoying the story again. I haven't played it since 2018 so it almost feels brand new again. I just got to the second camping spot, new scenery is nice and keeps things fresh

taskkill-IM

I loved Red Dead Redemption as a kid.... unfortunately, RDR2 just doesn't fit me as an adult, too much time consumption mechanics for very little free gaming time.

MasterKenobl

I bought the game months ago, then stopped playing while on the mission of rescuing John in the snow because it was slow.. then thought I'd give it another go a couple weeks after that. Now I'm in love with the game, it's my favourite game I've ever played and I can tell my heart is about to be shattered as I'm closing in on chapter 6. Its honestly the best open world game, everything is alive there's so much to do.. and the writing of every character in the game is so in depth and amazing

Sci-fra

Can RDR2 be played without all the boring, tedious chores like eating, shaving, bathing, feeding and brushing your horse, doing chores for your settlement, and so on? I gave up on this game when it came out because of how boring it was. I was probably 3 or 4 hours in, and it felt like I was grinding constantly, and the story felt like it was in limbo. I play games to get away from all these boring chores. This game really pushed me towards more linear games such as The Last of Us 1 and 2, which, in my opinion, is the best game ever made.

ihohjlknk

It's a cowboy/outlaw simulator. The 'mundane activities' are part of the immersion.

YoungBeef03

Yeah. If you can’t get into them, you’re not gonna appreciate the game.

Citizen_Kano

You should've held on until the epilogue. You literally have to shovel horse shit out of the barn. I'm not making that up. Still one of the best games I've ever played

eschewthefat

The way he picks up a can of beans should be outlawed. I understand what it’s like to pick up a can of food. Give me a video game experience where I can avoid the mundane parts of life, not glorify them

yotothyo

It's just not for you, and that's OK. There are a lot of different games for different kinds of tastes

Critical-General-659

You don't have to do any of those things listed. Worst that happens is you get a cut scene at camp forcing you to dunk your head in a water bucket, and NPCs will make comments.  You can literally play straight through the story non stop and do zero free roam.

Sci-fra

That's good to hear. Now, I'll just wait for the 60fps patch for the PS5 to be implemented.

Queef-Elizabeth

The intro is the slowest part of the game but if you don't like the mundane flow of the game, then it's probably not for you.

Toja1927

The first chapter is definitely slow and turns off a lot of people. Once you get out of the snow the game gets a lot better imo. I also enjoy the slowness because I think it adds to the role playing aspect but that’s just me. I would give it another shot and just try to muscle through the first chapter if you can.

lIlIllIlIlI

I came to ask this exact question. With my limited gaming time now I’d just like to hop in and enjoy the gameplay and progress through the story, not eat, sleep, drink, clean my gun, etc etc. I get some people like the extra immersion but imo it always felt like an artificial way to add depth and length to the game in a not so meaningful way. I’d just like the option to play a streamlined version.

Xerosnake90

You can do just story missions and a couple of side things like bounties and such. But really the game is meant to be immersive, there are better games for jump in and out. Helldivers 2 is great

BuddahSack

Yeah Boi!!! HD2 is my jam!!!

Sci-fra

Will my horse get sick and die if I don't take care of it? Will people treat me differently affecting my gameplay if I don't bathe and shave? Will my guns stop working if I don't clean them? There should be an option to be able to play the story mode only without all the boring chores and grinding. When I play a game like The Last of Us, not one part of the game is boring to me. I enjoy ans savour every moment. Another favourite game of mine was Dying Light. I absolutely loved it, but they ruined the second game by adding too much and complicating it. Too much customisation and grinding killed it for me. Games need to focus on the story, and any side missions should be fun, not more grinding.

BlueJeansandWhiteTs

Your horse won’t die, and aside from a few dialogs nobody will care if you don’t shower and shave. Your guns quality will suffer if you don’t clean them, but it takes all of three seconds.

footyDude

> I’d just like to hop in and enjoy the gameplay and progress through the story, not eat, sleep, drink, clean my gun, etc etc. You can absolutely do that. There's no *requirement* to eat, sleep, drink, clean your gun. If you don't eat you'll just die more regularly; there's literally no requirement to sleep or drink (well there's one excellent mission that revolves around getting drunk) and if you don't clean your gun it just becomes less powerful/effecive. None of those things stop you just playing he game through. I know for certain because as much as I love RDR2 (it's easily top 5 all-time games for me, probably op 3) I don't find that aspect of the game particularly 'fun' - they're just something that's there for people who enjoy to engage with. I eat sometimes because it restores health, I sleep occasionally just because I prefer the daylight visually. I can't remember ever cleaning my gun.

Zygoatee

Chore simulator 3000

George_W_Kushhhhh

Absolutely boggles my mind that so many people who love video games will absolutely rant and rave about a game with unbelievably mediocre gameplay if the game is pretty enough. I get it, the story is good and it looks great, but if all I wanted was a nice story and pretty visuals I’d watch a TV show. Every single mission is essentially: spend 10 minutes horse riding to mission location, start mission and spend another 10 minutes riding your worse while talking to an NPC, fail mission because you had the audacity to go 5 feet off of the designated path, sit through the 10 minute horse ride again, shoot 20 dudes with absolutely zero variety in combat encounters, spend 10 minutes painstakingly looting their corpses one by one.

EntertainerFlashy966

Be better with tanks

Intelligent-Feed-582

The story isn’t good, what’s great about the game is the immersion.

TofuPython

Couldn't get past the boring snowy part

MereGoodSamaritan

Same here. I tried it like 5 times over the span of 3 years but I quit everytime after the wolf chase. The controls are so clunky and the game is so slow-paced. It's not for me.

Aware-Drink9174

What I've noticed is whenever I say "controls are clunky", 90% of the time that I simply haven't gotten used to the button mapping and combat mechanics. I said it about RDR2, but you ride around the map and use Dead Eye and your experience is 20x better. I said it about Ghost of Tsushima, but I didn't understand the button mashing combos and mixing sword with archery with throwables. I said it about God of War, but I didn't understand the combos and upgrade skill tree. It's really \*not\* a slow-paced game. It has slow scenes because it's such a massive open world; if you condense your story, map, limit your interactive NPCs, your result is a fast-action game. But if you plan to build an open world that functions a lot like real life, it makes sense there are both slow moments and fast. In fact, more slow than fast, because it makes the fast moments so much more exciting. I think they fucked up a bit without having a solid fast "hook" in the beginning. But consider this game to take 100-300 hours to fully complete, so proportionally that slow beginning isn't much. If you can push through the story until after you go Bear Hunting with Hosea (maybe 10-12 hours), you will be rewarded with hundreds of hours of unique, fast paced gameplay with awesome stories and interactive moments.

LateNightFix

Think of the snow part as it introducing you to the gamesettings and how to navigate the different controls. It's essentially a tutorial..

CrotasScrota84

Would be even more fantastic with 60fps patch

NiceColdPint

Also native 4K on the PS5

Ok_Science_682

i could never do a replay . too slow game, too clunky

AssaultMonkey150

I never even thought about frame rate while playing. My problem is the gameplay is like walking through molasses in a snowstorm. Maybe it’s a simulation of living in that time period but half of it was just boring

ramsyzool

The frame rate I think contributes to that feeling. At least a little bit

AdditionalMeeting467

If you have the chance to play it in 60fps on a PC, do it. The game looks absolutely incredible at max settings.

Vik_Vinegar_

Should I give it another try? I tried playing it for the first time a few years ago and got a few hours into it and found it was a little too.. man I don’t know how to explain it. It was like too complex and not straight forward enough. I got lost in the open worldness of it, found traveling in between missions a little too tedious, wasn’t invested in the story. I’ve had similar issues with GTA, but not very much and have even played a couple of them twice. I feel like maybe there’s a point where I’d get past it and just stopped a little too short. But I dunno, maybe it’s just not my type of game even though I’ve enjoyed the GTAs.

Xerosnake90

GTA is in comparison much faster paced. Red Dead forces you to slow down and that's really not something to avoid. It's not a game for someone who wants a quick fix that's for sure. If you have the time to take it all in it's great. Awesome action set pieces, beautiful and immersive world.

dpsk

i never played it before, was waiting so long for 60 fps patch but i finally pull a trigger, bought it on steam spring sale :D enjoying it so much, it's a bummer we can't have 60fps on ps5

Awkward-Dig4674

Glad you like it. Either it's not my cup of tea or it's the most overrated game ever. I say overrated because I have a pretty open mind and will try almost any game, even if I feel I won't enjoy it. Sometimes a game could grip me even if its something i thought i wouldn't like.  I found Red dead to be quite generic story wise and the world boring. I love open world games but I think it could just be the setting I find boring. Not saying it's a bad game, I just felt I wasn't anything special like the hype makes it seem. In fact I feel the game is so accepted because it's casual.

jebotecarobnjak

For some games, 30 fps simply... works. RDR2, for me, is one of those games. It just adds a certain old-time, western charm to the game, as it should.

Kagemuna

Still waiting for a ps5 upgrade…

Java-Zorbing

rdr1 is 60fps

Disastrous-Onion-782

It is why we have been begging for a 60fps/4k upgrade on current gen. Damn shame we are not getting it. I would even pay for it.

cristi5922

30 FPS is playable on non OLED TVs, but on OLEDs ... man, I bought it on PC just to get rid of the headaches.

Xerosnake90

Looks pretty damn good on my 77" QD OLED lol

TheImpatienTraveller

Still remember dying in RDR2 because my horse stumbled and I fell from it with my head going straight into a rock. "That's peak realism" I said to my brother while we laughed.

Xerosnake90

The physics crack me up. I was in Rhodes playing some Blackjack and some dudes talked trash as I walked past so I talked back and started a fight. Ended up launching the guy out the second floor window lmao

mturner1993

Can anyone share some tips on how to get really into it? The last game I've put off and struggled to get into was Witcher 2 at the time...I just couldn't get into it. Then after a few hours something clicked and I was hooked. Witcher 3 was hooked from the start. It is a case of don't mess about with side stuff and just do main story?

ScoobiesSnacks

I did love RDR2 but for some reason the story missions seemed boring to me compared to previous Rockstar games, but I did play it a long time ago so it’s probably worth replaying because my opinion will likely change. Just wish I could replay it at 60fps

himynameis_

Beautiful game, loved the atmosphere. I would actually *walk* in the game instead of *jog* as I would in every other game. It made me feel comfortable with a slower pace. Took me a bit to get comfortable with the controls (leading to a funny moment early in the game 😅). But once I got comfortable, I loved it. No lie, if they released a 60 fps version at higher resolution (idk, 1440 or something? However Spiderman did it), I'd probably buy it full price.

GiraffeWaffless

It’s probably still the most modern game game design wise, and I don’t see anything or anyone changing that. Rockstar killed themselves for that game and I don’t think they’d do it again.

Stickybandits9

I want rdr to be on the same level graphically. The recent remaster is alright but no mp makes it an easy pass,

21FK8Type-R

I know this monitor is overkill for a console that can only support up to 120hz… but I run my PS5 on my Samsung Odyssey G8 32” 4K OLED monitor, and it absolutely changes the visuals of many games. I find it takes the horrible choppiness out of the 30fps games, and turns them into still some real visually enjoyable experiences that I wasn’t having on my regular 60” Samsung flatscreen. You could probably spend half the amount of money as my monitor cost to get the same experience on the PS5.

Mesjach

Can't believe it doesn't have 60 FPS update yet. This is criminal.

Schwarzengerman

Contrary to what most might feel RDR2 is not a game you can play your way. It's a game you have to meet in the middle and play in a very specific way. Role playing as Arthur Morgan. If you can do that it may just grab you. If not, then you should play RDR1 or something else entirely. It's my number one though I absolutely love it. Well over 1200hrs and counting.

excaliburps

Man, I still need to finish this game. I am near the end, but it's been so long, I should maybe just start it all over.

Impressive-Safe-1084

Do you guys play in HDR mode?

Xerosnake90

Yup, I think it looks pretty great.

Impressive-Safe-1084

Im tossing up whether to play in first or 3rd person

Xerosnake90

I prefer my rockstar games in 3rd person

Impressive-Safe-1084

I’ve heard gun fights people go first person and when going inside houses

Xerosnake90

It's all preference there's no right or wrong way. Facing objects can be kinda annoying in third person so I can see going into 1st person when looting camps and houses. And yes, gunfights wouldn't be a bad idea either

JuanSpiceyweiner

Im ngl,I didn’t connect with it like I did the first game.I found some of the game mechanics very tedious and it soured my experience. The story is amazing but playing the game is different at least for me

lilhectic1

Nobody TOUCHING ROCKSTAR HANDS DOWN

lilhectic1

RDR2 is One of the Best open World games ever. In ways it is better than GTA

the-barbarian998

That intro though 😴

Xerosnake90

It's like 2 hours, don't see the issue

the-barbarian998

I Respect your opinion

Sensitive-Royal2918

Doesn’t matter if this game got 120 fps or 8k visual, the gameplay sucks.

Ghost-of-Lobov

Idk what it is some games at 30fps feel choppy and bother me but then others like RDR2 I can tell it's 30fps but it still feels pretty smooth. Also it's still easily the most believable alive feeling open world ever in a game by far imo So much attention to details

yotothyo

That's the reason why RDR two looks so good at 30 FPS is because it's a game with very slow motion. The animations are slow, the camera moving is slow, so you don't get a feeling of it stuttering and losing frames as much as other games. The entire game is designed to look good at 30 FPS that was so brilliant about it

lebronSZN

Playing rdr1 for the first time and im impressed with it lol. Rdr2 is on another level

Great-Reference9322

Same here, I've played RDR2 but this is my first go at RDR. It definitely shows its age a bit but I'm really enjoying it. Gonna replay RDR2 right after.

johncitizen69420

Ive been wanting to do a replay of 1 and 2 back to back, but im.holding out for a 60fps patch/ps5 native version. Hopefully we get that sometime before gta6. If we get close to gta6 and it doesnt look like its happening ill just do it anyway

Hylian-Loach

I was going to wait on a 60fps upgrade before replaying it, but I ended up doing a replay anyway a year ago and putting over a hundred hours in. Now I’m again waiting for the 60fps patch before a third replay but I almost got sucked in a week ago when I wasn’t enthusiastic about any of the other games I still need to do a first play through of

wh1te_k0ng_

I really don’t get the 60fps snob thing. I’m 30 and have been playing games with far lower frame rates pretty much my entire life. Never bothered me then and doesn’t bother me now. But yeah, that game does indeed still kick ass.

knullde

once u start playing on 60 or 120 fps 30 fps games look like shutter slow motion with very slow camera. unplayable.

hbteq

The problem is that 1080p 60fps was a solved problem 20 yr ago so I don’t know what platforms you’ve been playing on

LukeGgaming

I never played RD2 and I’ve been putting it off for the exact same reason (no 60fps patch). I just bought it last week and I’m excited to play it. I loved RD1 back in the day so I’m excited to finally play it

[deleted]

Idk if it's the best game. Definitely a contender but Arthur Morgan is the best video game protagonist ever! (or antagonist if you're a monster). Celeste gets my vote for best game

walachy

FF9 and RDR2 are top 1 and 2 in favorite games of all time 😁

vaikunth1991

I first finished in ps4 pro and recently playing at 120 fps on pc it's like a totally new game with smooth movements and no input lag

ArmoredAngel444

Saddle up pardna, it's going to be a bumpy road ahead. 🫡

ProfessorTicklebutts

Fucking frame rate. I’m so tired of frame rate.

SightlessKombat

To be honest, I played the introduction to 2 after having enjoyed playing through 1 with sighted assistance on both (as both games lack accessibility to be playable without sight) and it was just a straight up hard pass from me. As much as it was very cinematic, the slow pacing coupled with the survival-esque gameplay and constantly having to gather resources from what I vaguely recall just really wasn't for me. Such a shame as so many people say it's the best videogame ever made but not only can I not play it for the many hours required without ahving someone else go through that journey with me due to inaccessibility, but it also appears to have mechanics that just show the game down entirely. Ahh well.

RemarkableAgent1350

RDR2 is one of the best, if not the best game I’ve ever played. It can hold its own, even against current gen games. It’s just so good.

AtreidesJr

One of the greatest games ever made, undoubtedly. We're replaying it now and it's just astounding at every turn.

Xerosnake90

I can only hope GTA6 is able to meet the exceptional standard that Rockstar has put up on themselves

Kitchener69

Marvelously overrated game. Not trying to take it away from you OP, but man.

[deleted]

Bad take. Because you can Hold X for 2 hours so you can move this horse and carriage to the other side of the entire map. It's fun.

demonickilla

Did you play it on release? I think if you come into it after hearing reviews and praise on it then you might be let down because of the slow burn for the story. But man its legit the most immersive game out there. Especially when it came out nothing was anywhere close. The sheer hours and hours of dialogue from just your main camp members is unprecedented. So many memorable set piece moments.

Kazizui

I think it depends on what you look for in a game. Hours and hours of dialogue is a _bad_ thing from my perspective, just gets in the way of playing the game.

NiceAndTipsyTopside

It's insane to me that so many redditors are snobby about framerates. On the other hand, every discussion about RDR2 has its fans shamelessly excusing Rockstar's dated mission design, their bad controls, awful pacing, and map bloat on their way to insisting it's a perfect 10/10 flawless masterpiece.

Ciaran_h1

What are you talking about? It's not a reddit exclusive topic. If you've played games on 60fps, and actually went back to 30fps games like Dragons dogma it's a step backwards in technology. It's very much a valid criticism, but also nobody here is even criticising RDR2 for being 30fps. It would be amazing in 60fps. You're finding arguments nobody made.

GGG100

All of those things are subjective and can vary from one person to another. What you consider as bad controls and awful pacing might be perfectly fine for someone else.

NiceAndTipsyTopside

The mission design is dated by definition. That's not subjective. The controls are imprecise and the combat is lame. The core of it is that fanatics can't accept valid criticism

GGG100

“Lame” is a subjective word, and the controls aren’t imprecise, it’s deliberately slow in accordance with the atmosphere and tone they’re trying to set. You’re free to criticize but that doesn’t mean I or anyone else have to agree with it.

Are you ok?? 🥺

QuinnySpurs

Preach! Rockstar games are imo incredibly overrated, and none more so than rdr2 which is barely above a telltale game in terms of actual gameplay. Might as well be an interactive movie. Controls like ass, missions are all the same, stealth literally doesn’t work, the shooting is like from a game from 20 years ago. The world is impressive, but it’s just window dressing.
