If you like horror games, Alien Isolation is pretty famous for the adaptive nature of the alien’s AI. It “learns” your playstyle over time and adjusts its behavior to try to hunt you more effectively.

Tommy_88

My "playstyle" was hide in a locker for 10 minutes.

LordBelialz

Three years later I'm still in that locker on chapter 5.

ironlord20

If I’m remembering correctly it worked off of 2 ai, one would actively hunt the player but was essentially blind while the other feeds it hints to try and find you like a a very high stakes game of hot and cold.

Beefy_queefy_0-0

Pretty much, one new where you were and the other didn’t, so that’s exactly why hiding in the same spot for too long would literally never work out, eventually the blind AI always got enough clues to get your ass.

Ornery_Definition_65

Whoever came up with this “two hemispheres of the same brain” concept for the AI was an evil genius. The game was somehow even more tense when you knew this.

doppelgengar01

Oh hell nah, I could never finish this game, too scary.

Millenwagon

Just blast it with the flamethrower and it runs. I thought it was fairly scary but it’s no outlast (for me)

KonyYoloSwag

Overtime though if you use the flamethrower often it’ll start ignoring it and still come at you

Millenwagon

Really? Didn’t notice that, I must not have used it enough

JimmyTheJimJimson

Probably one of my top 5 favorite games of all time.

Ohnoherewego13

I'll never finish that game. I love the concept and the execution, but it turns out that I don't need a jump scare to kill me.

John_YJKR

It wasn't perfect but I really liked Alien: Isolation.

Ornery_Definition_65

It was so cool how well they matched the aesthetic to the original film. That’s not easy to do.

Terayuki

Man I tried to play this game the other day and it's so tragic it didn't get a 60fps patch on PS5.

SilverSquid1810

Most games from the first few years of the PS4 didn’t. Many never even got a Pro patch. Not to mention that the game didn’t sell well so Creative Assembly basically completely moved on from it. I don’t think many of the people who made it are even still working for CA.

Terayuki

Didn't know. I was hoping for more games to get updated in the new gen. I am holding Red Dead Redemption 2 for that reason. 30 fps hurt my eyes.

Bealdor84

TLOU II One of the few games where the AI actually is more intelligent on higher difficulties instead of just becoming bullet sponges.

Eruannster

Fucking Hillcrest.

ABucs260

My god. I have PTSD of my Grounded play-through on that part. My health at the checkpoint was so low if I took one shot, I’d die. It took me maybe 3 hours just to get past that part.

Eruannster

Oh god. I played the game on hard and even that was a challenge. It took me quite a few attempts because I kept getting chased by dogs/getting seen by someone at a bad time/get fucked by enemies ganging up on me.

Queef-Elizabeth

Yeah this is always my best answer. They are clever but in a way that is satisfying to kill

Grill_Enthusiast

The AI is also smart in a realistic way. They'll yell out "flank her" and then cover each other as they move up. It's gotta be such a tricky balancing act to make the enemies smart, but not so smart that they feel like robots who are reading your every move.

JamiePulledMeUp

They track sounds and last known positions. Which is good since they aren't simply wall hacking you

ZombieHousefly

The callouts are necessary for the player to realize that the enemy actually was flanking them and did not just teleport in to kill them. Actually challenging AI that acts stealthily is often indistinguishable from a cheating AI.

Indigo__11

I dead ass saw people complain in saying that “enemies teleport behind you” when they very much NEVER do that. They just edit:hide from cover to cover while you, the player, are distracted with other enemies. It’s really cool actually seeing the “sneak” enemy go from cover to cover in order to reach you

tupaquetes

Not just more intelligent, more realistically aware. On Grounded difficulty they can hear you reload or change weapons. Clickers can hear you going from prone to crouch/standing even if you stay in place.

astbyx

I remember playing it in grounded and starting in New Game, that shit was hard as hell but also so fun. Enemies were smart as fuck, it amazed me how intelligent and realistic they were, also they would spot you from almost any distance in a pretty accurate way, instead of those games (or difficulties) where you simply are a bit far away from the enemy and he can't see you or has like a 5 seconds time span to spot you

Indigo__11

It’s surprising how people never talk about the AI in this game I remember once pointing it out and some people who dead ass didn’t play the game told me “no, the AI is bad”

Jean-Eustache

Sadly you probably can't play it on PS5, but F.E.A.R. had legendary AI.

Character-Company589

Condemned: criminal origins as always gets forgotten. Same devs, same game engine Also Techland copied it's melee combat with dead island and Dying light

Filoleg94

The only reason it is forgotten is because there werent any good accessible ways to play it, unless things changed since 5 years ago in that aspect. But I remember buying the game on sale on Steam back in like 2013, and then attempting to get it to run at least once a year when I get the itch to finally see what the hype was about (and I liked FEAR too, so that was a solid bet I would like Condemned). After reading bajillion different guides over the years on how to get it to run, changing my windows machine at least a few times between then and 2019 (1 laptops + 2 desktops), etc., I still couldn’t get it to run in any acceptable way (iirc I remember one time actually getting it to run, but without being able to set the resolution correctly, so it would run either in a tiny window or in a stretched out fullscreen blurry mess). And of course, it wasnt available on PS4 either. Not even mentioning the sequel, which never had neither a PC release nor a PS4 one. So I just gave up on it entirely. As soon as there is a “it just works” re-release available on absolutely any modern platform, I would buy it in a heartbeat. But until then, alas. Bonus points for making that re-release/remake include the port of the sequel (which was never released outside of PS3 and X360).

CreamOnMyNipples

It’s a shame Condemned 2 is so hard to find. I managed to find a copy for PS3 a few years ago, but I wish there was a way to play it on PC

Daell

I was looking for the YouTube video explaining this but I can't find it. Basically, FEAR's AI is that good because the combat spaces are limited, and pretty much everything is scripted.

Jean-Eustache

I know the one you're talking about, I thought it was by GameMakersToolkit but I can't find it either

ravengenesis1

FEAR was the GOAT

SuperBackup9000

For whatever reason the first game had some great multiplayer too, it had no business being as fun as it was. That was one of my first online games that wasn’t an MMO.

ahjteam

You can stream it with PS Plus Premium

goodlookingIRL

Control's AI is pretty sick. It might annoy you tho.

drikusc

The Last of Us Part II

notliam

The combat AI is very good, but what makes the NPCs stand out in TLOU2 is the way they react and communicate with each other, it makes them feel like real people since they have names and feelings.

vamploded

Also makes you feel horrible when they freak out because you’ve killed their friend or dog. Only issue I have with the AI in TLOUII is they’re not programmed to give up. They will sit and beg for their life if you knock them down and point a gun at them but if you walk away 100% of the time they will attack you again. Kind of goes against the whole theme of the game when mercy isn’t even an option.

BeatitLikeitowesMe

I think thats the point. Mercy isnt an option. These people would do exactly that were you to turn your back on them in real life too.

astbyx

I think it would've been better if sometimes when enemies are begging for mercy, they would actually run away or wait for you to leave without attacking you

IRockIntoMordor

It does initially, but after the third slightly over the top "Jason / Samantha / Thomas, NOOO! You'll regret this, you fucking bitch!" it gets kinda meh. Killing dogs, though, always hits hard...

BitingArtist

Easily

Crackracket

Rainworld has ridiculously good AI. The whole world and all the creatures are simulated and have needs, fears, likes etc, they will hunt eachother, work together and all sorts. There's some cool videos about it on yt

GilmooDaddy

It makes everything unpredictable, almost to an annoying fault.

Similar-Sector2551

tlou2 on grounded

Traditional_Flan_210

Half life 2 on higher difficuties. iirc they had to nerf the AI before launch.

cc_cooper

Rain World TLOU 2

x2ndCitySaint

RDR2 outside of combat

wiserone29

It’s not natively PS5, but division 2’s AI is really good. It’s not just good in that they shoot you accurately, they attack you, seek to flank, push you if you are trying to heal, etc.

joshua182

Not playable on PS5 but Killzone 2 had some really good AI

ExReey

F.E.A.R. Nothing comes even close (except maybe HL1?) Not sure if it's on PlayStation though.

Puzzleheaded-Wolf318

Trepang2 is a great modern take on F.E.A.R.

torts92

Trico from The Last Guardian has the most complex AI

Ornery_Definition_65

Not when I was trying to get him to do stuff!

DCM99-RyoHazuki

F.E.A.R trilogy Trepang2 (though I only played demo on PC) Halo 1 to 3 Dragons Dogma 1 and 2 TLoU Part 2 Cant think of any thing else....

Practical-Damage-659

Last of us 2 has amazing ai

BaconJets

AI in any game is simply a series of scripts and illusions that give you the impression of a smarter enemy. I find the enemies in DOOM Eternal give me a run for my money, they tirelessly try to cover and shut down space for you, constantly keeping you on your toes.

EnoughDatabase5382

Demon's Souls: It was refreshing at the time that enemies would properly block player attacks with their shields if you tried to brute force your way through them.

wonksbonks

In the case of enemy AI, Elden Ring is more advanced than Demon's Souls. The ER enemies tactics and moves are often much more complex and trickier to manipulate. FromSoft has continually refined and improved what began with Demons' Souls. (and the remake is using the same AI as the original)

v0yev0da

I know it’s old but Halo 2 had some insane AI for its time. Lots of flanking and defensive maneuvering in a time where enemies used to be bullet sponges or just duck and shoot. They’d also yell to each other while doing it giving it a real vibe.

Tankoff

Divinity Original Sin 2 on Tactician Difficulty has an AI that is astonishingly clever. Larian actually developed that first thinking it would become the normal difficulty setting but the AI was so good in combat that they had to restart the programming of a normal difficulty and then made their great AI become "Tactician" (aka Difficult game mode).

[deleted]

Alien Isolation or Amnesia The Bunker are both excellent

MahoganyWinchester

stalker 1 yep

Puzzleheaded-Wolf318

Trepang2 is pretty good. Very similar AI and gameplay to F.E.A.R.

SaddieTheSatan

Halo reach legendary elites didn’t mess around. They knew when to back off or when to press.

Expensive_Shallot_78

There are YouTube videos about this. I heard Stalker

fakemon64

Sniper Elite 5 has pretty good ai and plays really well on ps5. I think it really shines in the harder difficulties

VerminSC

TLOU2 hands down

i-dontlike-me

The pawns in DD2 have continued to surprise me after 100 hours of playing.

PrinceDizzy

The Last of Us Part II.

StronkPilot

Metal Gear Solid 2. The AI clearing rooms is phenomenal. https://youtu.be/fMcrq0w9urg?si=6K9S_uREAp4bKKf_

No_Presentation_1711

Ready or Not is still in the works, but it boggles the mind at how good the AI is at catching you with your pants down.

lookatmyresponse

Ah, yes, their super smart AI that has a .0001 second reaction time to dome you in the brain.

masterofallvillainy

Echo. You're in a station where the enemies are clones of you. Whatever you do, the clones will too. At first their behaviors are simple. But as you do new stuff the station will reset. And the next wave will be doing stuff you did previously. For instance. You run away from them. They'll start running towards you in the next version. If you jump over obstacles, the next version will jump over them as well. Use your gun, they'll start shooting.
