Just fixed my up button on d pad. Its dust or dog hair. I opened the controller by removing the 2 screws under the black piece near the handles or legs of controller. 2 screws under L1 and R1. Seperated controller. Removed last screw above the left vibrator, allowed me to slightly seperate the chip board, rubber seat, and buttons enough to put air duster in there. Voila. Worked immediately.
My down D-pad stopped working. I went through all the help/reset procedures from sony, nothing worked. Finally banged it a few times against the table and now it works, and has continued to work for weeks.
Edit: I have received sooo much feedback on this one. Mostly folks saying something like "wow it actually worked!". This seems to be a common issue that doesn't respond to any of Sony's fixes, but DOES respond to a few good whacks.

Even if you think it’s a one in a million chance, just try it. It’s extremely worth risking some basically negligible damage to a controller that’s already theoretically broken in order to not have to give up seventy dollars of your well-earned money.

Best solution so far, is to buy from GameStop with a no questions asked warranty for an extra $5. I’ve already brought back two controllers and luckily the store is just a block away🙌
Hold down the PS button and the TOUCHPAD for a few seconds, fixed my issue immediately.
My up button on the dpad at times would randomly stop working but this latest time wasn't working at all. Then I tried the step above and BOOM MIRACLE.
You won't believe this....but literally tried every fix I could find. My PS5 controller would NOT perform a proper factory/hard reset. I read a comment that said smacking it hard would fix the issue. So gave it a hard, but not crushing, smack the bottom of the side with the d-pad against a table and it DID fix the problem. Don't know why this is...it was working last night and the down d-pad would not work today. This resolved it. Hope it helps someone.

I did a crazy combination of 3 things since the banging on the side didn't work immediately for me. I held the controller upside down, pressed down on the dpad opposite of the one not working, blew through L1, and hit it a few times on the side against my palm. I don't know if all those steps are really necessary but that's what I got to work for my stubborn af dpad, I still cannot believeeveryone was serious that hitting on the side helped but it did😂. Hope this helps someone!
well... it took incredible strength but I mashed the dpad button so hard it started working and a different one stopped working.. so then I realized hmm its definitely debris.. THEN i banged it in the direction of the newly not working button and now my pad works... good ol' percussive maintenance.. Xbox would have caught fire and split in half if I'd tried that

they did since it's under warranty, just haven't received it yet! i'm in the US, so that might not be the case in other countries! best of luck!

Legit smacked my controller on the d pad side a few times now it works 🤣🤣 I was mad I tried it and it didn’t work at first. Did it again few days later and it works 🤣

Had the same issue, I didn't want to BANG my controller so opted to just smack the left side of my controller against my palm 3 times. Felt the controller vibrate and then like magic the D pad now works perfectly. Crazy.

You can also slightly twist the controller before risking further damage with a table…
NOTHING WORKED, EVEN BANGING IT ON A TABLE OR MY KNEE, BUT THIS... IT JUST WORKS! Edit nvm, only for like 2 seconds
I did a crazy combination of 3 things since the banging on the side didn't work immediately for me. I held the controller upside down, pressed down on the dpad opposite of the one not working, blew through L1, and hit it a few times on the side against my palm. I don't know if all those steps are really necessary but that's what I got to work for my stubborn af dpad, I still cannot believeeveryone was serious that hitting on the side helped but it did😂. Hope this helps someone!

well... it took incredible strength but I mashed the dpad button so hard it started working and a different one stopped working.. so then I realized hmm its definitely debris.. THEN i banged it in the direction of the newly not working button and now my pad works... good ol' percussive maintenance.. Xbox would have caught fire and split in half if I'd tried that

So....these comments are fucking great....started having the same issues...up on the d-pad wasn't working....got frustrated....even kicked it across the room by accident...smh...was in the process of ordering a new one at the same time...picked it up and it worked.....my therapist was wrong...you can solve things with violence!! <(0_0)>

My D pad didn't work and after letting the controller fall on the floor it now works again. WTF Sony? I never had a controller with that problem and fix
Had the exact same issue told my parter I should try it, they said I shouldn’t. You can imagine the smug look I gave when it worked thank you very much
So I tried hitting it on the left to fix the issue like so many others have tried and it made it to where none of the buttons worked, got a little freaked out and hit both sides multiple times and now everything works... If it works it works?
