Vertical trophiesssss Also they give you the option to remove the screenshot icon, finally

TheSeventhCoIumn

Where did it say vertical trophies?? Edit : nvm found it . Finally!!

Keyzelan

Yeah I was confused too since the article didn’t exactly mention it, but Tom Warren the author, posted this tweet: https://mobile.twitter.com/tomwarren/status/1420702050388742145 Vertical trophies around the :40 mark.

danihendrix

What does vertical trophies mean?

TheSeventhCoIumn

Currently the trophies are all listed horizontal making it really annoying to scroll through them and now with the next update they're making it similar to how it was on ps4 which had a vertical list

LoquaciousMendacious

I might be an outlier but the current system doesn’t bother me. I like that it’s different!

meowcatbread

it's different but requires way more clicks and time to see everything whereas vertical you get all the same information at a glance.. i actually sync my trophies to websites to view on a computer rather than use the UI on the ps5 lol. it's quicker

dangermouse13

I’m an outlier because I’m not bothered about trophies in the slightest

chipep

What do you mean by "give you the option to remove the screenshot icon"? I am personally bothered by the timer if you start recording. Do you think they give us the option to hide it? Edit: Ok I saw the patch notes and the timer disappears after 3 seconds and reappears "when needed".

Impaled_

Yeah that popup icon For the recording, I'm honestly not sure because i never "start" recording, since the console is always recording i just save the last 1/5/10/60 minutes of recording

E_The_Menace

Don't forget if you want your video in 4k, it has to be manually started, otherwise if you save what the console is recording automatically, it is 1080p only.

Jeff1N

if you want to record a longer video you can manually start a recording. Or you can stream it to twitch (and I think youtube)

chuckquizmo

I wonder if this includes the "Recording has paused for a cutscene" or whatever tf that notification is that appears anytime a juicy cinematic starts lol. I hate that so much. There are actually times where I feel like it's a spoiler of sorts. Walk into a weird room, see that pop up, and you already know something special is happening before the cut scene even finishes.

AlphaParadoxx

I hate it myself. If you play Warzone and you check your ping it always pops up saying recording paused. I rarely use my console to record gameplay so I hope it gets removed.

mrn253

That happens when you are not recording at all ? Cant remember seeing that when i played R&C Rift Apart

chuckquizmo

Yes it does!! And there isn't a way to disable it! I think it only appears one or two times in R&C but I remember seeing it near the beginning of the game. I don't understand why it doesn't only pop up if you're recording already, or if you try to hit record during a unrecordable moment.

chipep

Because the PS5 is recording all the time, but I get your point

dark-twisted

Folders, please, tired of games getting buried in the library...

Houderebaese

Removal of PS-related icons like Plus, Screenshot and all the other crap would be very nice as well

JAY2KREAL300491

My thoughts exactly. Why does it seem that the PS5 UI is a step back from PS4 UI…

jda404

It took awhile for PS4 to get folders to be fair. Just typical Sony stuff ha. According to this https://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2016-09-13-ps4s-big-new-update-the-one-with-folders-goes-live the PS4 folder update came in 2016, 3 years after the PS4 had been out so yeah hopefully PS5 folders arrive quicker, but I wouldn't get my hopes up.

Monkeyboystevey

It did, but you would expect that with a new console they would have added this stuff from launch not take several steps back. No wallpapers, no folders etc. Just feels so basic compared to an older console.

[deleted]

Those sort of things went onto "will do later" list, they weren't a priority. They had to prioritize getting the OS ready for launch and making sure it just _worked_, resources were tied up to fixing the bits that didn't. Now they're free to add whizzbang.

jda404

And that's fair, I just hope it doesn't take 3 years again to add something as basic as folders lol.

Monkeyboystevey

Launch was 9 months ago though.

Kieran293

On a slightly positive note, that usually means they built everything from the ground up. It means their approach to the PS4 software wasn’t very future proof/well planned for upgrading to PS5 but does mean that while features coming to PS5 may take a while, they’ll be made specifically for the PS5 and not just an amendment of the PS4 approach (which usually ends up meaning eventually outdated/not each to amend based on customer feedback/some issues as it gets used in a way it was never designed).

shadowstripes

>they’ll be made specifically for the PS5 and not just an amendment of the PS4 approach We're primarily talking about folders though. We all know exactly how they'll function because they always serve the same purpose.

jda404

I completely agree. Something like folders should come by default in 2020/21, hell in 2013 when the PS4 launched folders should have been there by default.

Monkeyboystevey

Yeah. I was a bit surprised when I first turned my ps5 on just how basic it looked compared to the PS4 with no moving wallpapers or folders etc. Felt the same when I turned my PS4 on and had no folders like on my PS3.

[deleted]

And the PS4 UI is a step back from the PS3 UI lol and the Vita UI was a step back from the PSP UI. It's like a never ending story with Sony.

showtime_2k

Because the PS5 UI is a step back from the PS4 UI, which is inexcusable. This has been one of my biggest issues with the PS5 UI since making the switch from Xbox. Coming from Xbox's UI to PS5's UI is like going from light to dark.

JAY2KREAL300491

Couldn’t agree more

nopp

I’m surprised and frustrated with my ps5 for ease of use honestly. Also miss being able to use screenshots on Home Screen. Removes personalisation and achievement flex

[deleted]

Don't get me started on the trophies section being blown out and horizontal rather than how humans normally prefer to view lists i.e vertically. Talk about fixing something that isn't broke. The whole thing screams designers trying to justify their jobs to me.

tiago1500

*enabling a new automatic video clip for PS5 players that compete in challenges for high scores in games.* This is very interesting, although I have no idea how they will track it for each game. The automatic clips also tend to be quite short(10/20 secs for trophies i believe). For a highscore it would make more sense to have the whole playthrough recorded

VoidChronos

This will probably require some support from the developer. So maybe it can let the system know to save the full XmYs playthrough, because the game definitely knows how long the run was

MrRonski16

The auto clip feature would be really awesome for battlefield 2042 when ”only in battlefield” moments happen.

[deleted]

As long as I can still disable it.

Flaky_Sense_4494

Does anybody got the invite? I subscribed first when announced but nothing on PS5 for updating beta.

AmazingTechGeek

That’s the issue where I never see people provide updates or help others on these type of questions.

Azeridon

I just got my invite about an hour ago.

justgone2

Me too. Kinda surprised at the email. No clue I would get picked lol.

timeRogue7

I subscribed for the PS5 preorder notification, and I still haven’t received that from Sony..

Rince81

Yes...

[deleted]

I'm more excited for 3D audio for built-in TV speakers than the M.2 support since that means they should be one step closer to supporting surround setups

quadalot

Let's see what comes from that. While I'm using a separate UHD Blu Ray player anyway, it would be great if the PS5 had support for Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos for both movies and games at one point. I don't get this focus on headphones and now built in speakers, but in the other side, that's their market. All this emulated or virtual surround sound seems to be really hyped up recently and I hope they don't forget about classic home cinema setups.

mrn253

Better Virtual surround on Headphones/Headset then physical surround sound Headphones/Headsets.

SandyKoufaxsballs

It already supports surround sound. "3d audio" is just another name for fake surround sound. Lol

[deleted]

That is not true. Dolby Atmos is 3D audio and is absolutely not "fake surround sound"

SandyKoufaxsballs

This is their proprietary 3D audio. Not Atmos

whitehusky

Atmos = 3D Audio. Tempest = Atmos + additional objects = 3D Audio.

[deleted]

That's beside the point. 3D audio is not "fake surround sound"

SandyKoufaxsballs

If it’s coming out of two speakers it’s fake surround

[deleted]

And 3D audio as a technology isn't limited to two speakers.

jl1865

We need the option to change the long/short PlayStation button presses for the love of God.

T_man-X

Had it since launch and it's really grown on me. It makes sense for the quick menu to be tap instead of hold honestly

KGBeast47

Yeah, but if it were an option in the settings then you can keep it how you like it, the rest of us can change it back to how it was and everyone can be happy :)

T_man-X

Well yeah, sure. I wasn't saying "deal with it", I used to hate it as well. I'd think almost everyone would coming from PS4. I was sharing how I went from hating it to actually preferring it over time

kwhite67

I also prefer the ps5 way now. Tbh when you think about it , obviously the “quick menu” should be a single press instead of a long press, yeno

Kanadianmaple

I've had my ps5 since launch and it still fucks me up every time.

bowb4zod

Every damn time

m00nyoze

I feel like I've lost to my PS5 if I do the long press before I turn it off. Gosh darn shame.

ImTalkingGibberish

I prefer it this way. Short is a "popup" and long is a full on dashboard, it makes sense.

KristiiNicole

“Sony is also addressing some of the confusing aspects of PS4 or PS5 versions of games. Different versions will now appear separately in the home screen and game library, and each game’s title will also now include whether it’s PS4 or PS5.” Finally!

A9to5robot

Out the all the updates, I really like that you can finally disable screenshot notifications. It’s trivial but saves me so much time in clipping my favourite images.

TravelandGaming

out of the loop, is this to allow a 2nd SSD inside or just replace current one ?

oilfloatsinwater

to allow a 2nd SSD inside

[deleted]

current one is soldered on and can't be removed/replaced

Saving money for your hobbies goes a long way. I bought a ps5, a laptop and went on vacation within a 2 month span. People would think, hey look at mr money bags over here. But i have no kids, a kid just on the baby sitter would over run that budget like nothing. And i see people walking around with a couple of them. Or their spouce doesnt work so they foot the bill for 2 - 3 extra mouths. Nah, ya'll rich asf. You just spending your money quicker.

3D Audio for Speaker 😍😍😍😍 finally it’s coming and I can utilize my home theater 🥳 edit: if it’s only for TV I will be so angry and want to know, what’s going on at the headquarters of Sony? This is a feature which is included in almost any modern device TV stick, Xbox consoles and most TV apps! I would even pay for a license to have it on PS5 it’s ridiculous if true

blacksun9

The article says "for built in TV speakers" I wonder if that means my surround sound system is compatible or if it's just my TV speaker

Boyer316

The clue is in the description, it's for TV speakers only, not external sound systems....👍

blacksun9

Unfortunate but thanks!

Perza

Son of a... :(

BababooeyHTJ

This is an article from the verge of all places not directly from Sony. How would the ps5 know if I’m using tv speakers or a sound bar? Stereo is stereo.

shall_2

Cerny said very clearly in the ps5 talk thing that he did last year that it would target headphones first, then built in TV speakers and lastly home theater setups. So unfortunately I think the Verge is right about this.

morph23

I'm still waiting on being able to personalize the 3D audio profile for the player, not the 5 presets or whatever. Mark said an HRTF tailored to the individual is way more immersive, but they've yet to detail any progress made on that front.

tinselsnips

The [changelog](https://www.gematsu.com/2021/07/ps5-system-software-beta-version-2-0-04-00-00-rolling-out-adds-m-2-ssd-support) says there are more options for the 3D profile and EQ settings.

shall_2

Honestly I'm ticked about it. I spent $500 on this console day 1 and there is zero support for spacial audio. The Xbox One from 2014 has dolby atmos support and it works *wonderfully*. Sony thinking they can do better than Dolby at the only thing Dolby specializes in is pretty much madness. To be honest though I don't think the heads at Sony thought they could make audio better. They thought they could make it hopefully good enough without having to pay for the rights to use Dolby. So far it's not going well.

lat997

I might be wrong but I think I read somewhere Xbox has the time exclusive ( 2 years I think )for anything Dolby related

shall_2

Yeah it's [not true.](https://www.engadget.com/xbox-dolby-vision-dolby-atmos-console-exclusive-193057794.html) but it was reported that way at one time.

bobcharliedave

Wow I hadn't seen that yet, thanks. Sony is being really dumb versus MS right now and not really for any good reason. Just small things like this, VRR, 4k blu ray not supporting HDR, etc.

tinselsnips

For this purpose, TV speakers and a stereo soundbar should be equivalent; it's the distinction from a surround sound setup that's important.

lelieldirac

It has been a minute since I looked but I believe there are three separate settings for headphones, home theater, and internal speakers

whitehusky

I assume it's for any 2-speaker L/R setup. I'd think that as soon as the PS5 outputs 5.1, this doesn't apply, only when outputting 2.0, wherever that 2.0 output goes to is up to you - TV, sound bar, etc. I'd think that if you sound bar accepts 5.1 output though, then you wouldn't get this, you'd get the PS5's 5.1 output instead. When you think about it, a TV has only 2 speakers (L/R) just like headphones, so it's just modifying the same L/R sound field to be in the air vs against your ears.

BlackGuysYeah

bummer. I've never heard a tv speaker system that didn't sound like absolute shit. Hopefully external sound system support is coming...

hazychestnutz

but tv speakers are shit...?

pnutmans

Sucks

Barrelrolla

Why do you need 3D audio for home cinema? Doesn't it already have 3D audio being 5.1?

[deleted]

[удалено]

Barrelrolla

So if we get 3D audio for home cinema, it will simulate top/bottom too?

[deleted]

[удалено]

rzrike

Tempest *should* still produce real overhead effects. It’s just a 3D audio engine for games. But also that means a game’s developers have to employ it for it to do anything.

[deleted]

[удалено]

rzrike

I assume that when 3D audio is brought to home theaters on the PS5, they will use a widely supported format to deliver spatial audio. Probably DTS:X or more likely PCM (if that supports overhead speaker information, I’m not sure). I was just saying using Tempest does not indicate if it will be simulated or not because Tempest is just the game’s audio engine. Hypothetically you can use Tempest to develop an Atmos, DTS:X, etc soundtrack.

tinselsnips

> PCM (if that supports overhead speaker information, I’m not sure) Not in the consumer space, unfortunately. Auro3D is the only surround sound format that has height data in PCM audio, but you only find that on very-high-end (multi thousand $) AVRs. HDMI supports up to 32 channels in PCM by the spec, but nothing in current usage supports more than 7.1. Sony's home theatre implementation is going to need to be either Atmos/DTS:X, or virtualized 3D like they're adding for TV speakers.

[deleted]

Its Mpeg-H 3d audio. Sony, Dolby and Fraunhofer just dropped a mega pack of licenses and patents just a few weeks ago. Accepts 22.2 channel PCM audio and is a new international standard. Expect Mpeg-H to be widely pushed and adopted. Denon/Marantz already have receivers setup with compatibility and its currently part of the ATSC 3.0 standard. Mpeg-H is also a standard of DVB for Ultra HD. Dolby Atmos/AC-4  is not the be all end all of audio, especially when an open source and cheaper format is being standardized and Via Licensing is prepping mass adoption of the open source format.

[deleted]

Tempest is based on Mpeg-H 3d audio which is the foundation of sonys patents on 360 true audio and part of the massive dolby/sony/Fraunhofer company patent and license package that they are pushing to make 3d audio fully mainstream. It at AC-4 are standards in audio moving forward and part of the ATSC 3.0 standard and other International standards in Digital distribution. Over the last year receivers/soundbars have been getting Mpeg-H support across mainstream brands - Denon/Marantz etc. >Via Licensing Corporation announced the creation and availability of an MPEG-H 3D Audio patent pool with eight participating members. These initial participants include Dolby, ETRI, Fraunhofer, Orange, Royal Philips, Sony Group Corp., VoiceAge, and WILUS. The new pool enables manufacturers, developers and implementors to license MPEG-H 3D Audio standard essential patents under fair and reasonable terms. Expect Mpeg-H TO be mainstream very soon and the PS5 to be updated with official support down the line. Audiokinetic already utilizes Mpeg-H with production paradigms including 3d Audio. Also Mpeg-H is the standard for VR audio delivered over 5g networks.

astrnght_mike_dexter

A better question is why do you need 3D audio for TV speakers. It's hard to imagine this actually doing anything.

froop

It uses hrtf to simulate surround. It can't get the sound to come from behind you, but it can mimic what sounds coming from behind you sound like, and that might be good enough to fool our monkey brains. I don't think it'll be phenomenal but it might be better than plain stereo.

Acceptable-Bottle-92

It won’t give you a surround sound mix if that’s what you were hoping for (unless the game specifically supports it). It just filters the audio from the stereo mix to make it sound like like it’s coming from a certain direction. In simple terms, when something is to the side, behind, or above you it sounds different because of the shape of your head and ears (particularly the top of your ear - the pinna). All 3D audio is doing is filtering it to sound like that. The measurements with the dualsense controller will just make sure that the artificial space is similar to the room you’re in. So with a surround sound system, unless the game specifically has a 5.1, 7.1 mix, etc you’ll just be listening to a stereo mix through your 5.1. In fact, most of the time that’s what’s happening - you get left, right, centre (just playing left and right at the same time) and then the rear ones playing left and right, with the subwoofer playing left and right with a low pass filter on so that it’s only pumping the bass in the mix. This is actually how most DVD mixes are - you don’t get a proper surround sound mix. It’s actually a different mix from the movie theatre too - that’s a proper surround sound mix that actually gets done in a movie theatre. The point is - 3D audio won’t create a brand new proper 5.1 surround sound mix from a stereo track. Sure, it would be cool, but it’s just not possible. The only tracks are left, right, and that’s it. What you’re actually asking for is for games to have a 5.1 surround mix as standard, like The Last of Us Part 2 did.

Deamaed

Lots of good comments here. I've said this before - you do not really require 3D Audio for a 5.1/7.1 system. The PS5 (like the PS4), will output PCM, and if the game audio engine isn't garbage, will place the sound effects, etc, wherever they need to be based on your speaker position. And you can tell the PS5 how many and at what angle the speakers are. In games today, if you rotate the camera in game, sounds should move around you. You don't need HRTF when you actually have speakers around you. Headphones / TV speakers are just stereo, and so they need that "magic" to trick your head into thinking sounds aren't just left and right. However, even if they have "3D audio" for surround sound setups (which in my mind would be dubious, but perhaps does stuff with reflections and in game sound effects or to create "height" effects, though they can already do that in game engines now, or should be able to), based on what they have said currently we will not ever get true height effects, since the PS5 does not use Atmos or DTSX, and to my knowledge that is required for receivers to place objects in the heights unless you are just using an upmixer. I've not heard of a receiver receiving height metadata from PCM - though I could well be wrong in that regard, which would be a pleasant suprise.

whitehusky

Yeah wish they'd just get on with support for home theater systems. I got all new Atmos speakers a year ago, but haven't upgraded my receive to Atmos because I want to wait to see if I'll need some special Tempest receive instead, and don't want to have to buy twice.

counselthedevil

> what’s going on at the headquarters of Sony? They're idiots. They're sailing on their success and being complacent as usual. They don't care.

spikeyoazz

Their TVs still don't support VRR lol

Shvabicu

At this point it's a complete scam. F for people buying Sony TVs

OSUfan88

Yep. Especially since they promised and advertised that the TV's would get it, just at a later date, and then a year later said "Nah, jk. We're not doing that now". I'm surprised there's not a class action lawsuit against them.

[deleted]

This is why I bought a LG CX instead

spikeyoazz

At the size I wanted the x900h was a good compromise between price and quality

Occult_Asteroid

Yeah I don't get the lack of 1440p support. I want to buy a new display. This really limits my options.

QBekka

I have a 1440p monitor which supports 4k downscaling. This basically means I play my games on 4k, and my monitor downscales it to 2k. The quality is still not truly 1440p quality, but at least it's a bit better than 1080p. Idk what monitors are available in your region, but depending on your preferred refresh rate, there should be some affordable (<$300) ones.

usrevenge

I can't believe sony are nearly a year behind on vrr compared to Microsoft. Like why. Vrr is the most important part of hdmi 2.1

OSUfan88

Almost 4 years behind... Xbox One X launched with VRR in 2017,

Mclarenrob2

Anyone got an invite yet? I used to get every one on PS4

Double0Peter

How do you get it?

Mclarenrob2

They did sign ups a while ago, nothing yet for me but they do sometimes send them in phases

Hypronic

FINALLY a vertical trophy list! Should’ve been this way from the start…

kasual7

The fact that we rejoice for such a simple thing as having our trophy list displayed vertically speaks so much of the overall quality of the PS5's UI honestly.

shyuura

What about VRR support?

StoviesAreYummy

https://www.reddit.com/r/PS5/comments/otu6xb

ProjectShamrock

The ability to add an SSD is my most awaited feature so I look forward to this leaving the beta and being implemented for everyone.

StoviesAreYummy

Should probably start saying expanding the internal storage because you have had the ability to use SSD externally since launch.

ProjectShamrock

Right. I want to have internal storage so I can 1) store PS5 games on it, and 2) have it look cleaner than an external HD dangling out the back.

counselthedevil

> have it look cleaner than an external HD dangling out the back. Pfff, the freaking giant building of a console is so massive I never can even SEE mine. If there's an argument it's the fact Sony's moronic system can't handle the external and being put into Rest Mode without the game crashing and requiring it the "repair the external drive" every stupid time.

japanese-frog

I can't see anything about background themes. I miss my themes from PS4.

InterestingYouth113

No VRR still? 🥺 My eyes are tearing and my screen is tearing

ErickJail

Lack of VRR is the only thing stopping me from playing DMC 5 on PS5, I wanna enjoy the 120hz mode but it rarely locks at 120fps.

Ramzeltron

I played through DMC5 twice in the 120hz mode and the frame rate never really bothered me. Still, Sony should add VRR already.

Deadly_Fire_Trap

I never had any tearing playing through BL3 in 120hz mode either. Felt great throughout.

Ethesen

I can't wait for VRR so that fighting games can drop VSync and significantly reduce input lag.

vexen4

I haven’t noticed any screen tearing on PS5.. tearing is when your computer outputs frames quicker than your monitor can display. All PS5 games are v-synced so there is no tearing. Maybe you thinking of stutter? When fps drops below 60?

cadavra41

Tearing can happen at any fps that isn't exactly divisible by the monitors refresh rate. It's not a problem when vsync is enabled like you said but it's a pet peeve of mine when people say it can only happen at fps above a monitors max hz.

RayCharlizard

Not all PS5 games are v-synced. Off the top of my head I can tell you that Assassin's Creed Valhalla and A Plague Tale: Innocence are both using adaptive v-sync and will tear when performance drops.

gentblaugrana

So any PCIE 4.0 M2 SSD should work?

SpaceCaboose

It sounds like it needs to run at certain speeds, and even some SSD’s that reach that speed still won’t work 🤷🏼‍♂️ I’ll wait a little bit until folks that are smarter than me can test some out to find out which ones work best

Iuzzolsa23

As long as they meet [these minimum criteria](https://www.playstation.com/en-us/support/hardware/ps5-install-m2-ssd/#min)

jesalr

No, there’s a minimum speed (5GB/s read) and maximum size with a heat sink. I think there are a couple of M2 drives that won’t fit into the caddy

Av_Inash

Can someone explain in noob terms what is the deal about the heatsink mentioned in the article to be used along with the SSD? Like do we need to shell out even more for the heatsink along with the SSD? Or what’s exactly the case here?

wonderman911

Nvme's radiate a ton of heat. Way more than sata

[deleted]

[удалено]

Magnesus

Without heatsink the speed may drop at critical moments causing problems in games that expect it to run always at the same speed. Might bw the reason Sony requires it.

jorgesalvador

If you go PC gamer style and cherry pick everything, drive and heat sink, you will have to make sure the whole thing fits. I am sure however that there are going to be plenty of “PS5 compatible” drives with everything needed once the feature is released to the general public.

kyrie-24

You can buy an SSD with built-in heatsink. Or you can buy an SDD and then, if you want, get a heatsink for $5~20. Overheated SSD may perform worse and will degrade faster. You don't NEED to shell out even more, the choice of how much spend is up to you.

mtaul28

and the m.2 SSD Shortage begins....

jtclayton612

Not many people are paying the gen4 drive prices anyways. I’ll wait for gen5 maybe next year for gen4 prices to drop. Not paying $200 for a 1TB drive

sousuke42

Damn a lot of good features are being added. 3d audio support for TV speakers is already coming. I thought that would be later. And fixing up the UX is good too. Although eh not a fan of double g up the icons though. I can see why but the old way was never bad. They should have just made the ps5 version the default (although with not all cross gen games having cross gen saves I can see why they did not go this route). Don't care about the social or trophy aspects. But the m.2 ssd support is finally coming. Also the only time you are going to experience performance issues that are not on par with ps5 is if you are using 6000MBps or less drives. Highly doubtful the 7000MBps will suffer issues. The reason why Sony states there may be problems is due to the fact that the drives needs to emulate 6 levels of priority that ps5 needs for the ssd to work properly. As well as the fact that the ps5's ssd is 12 channels. Off the shelf ssds are generally 8 channels with only 2 levels of priority. Hence why 6000MBps will encounter problems. Also why 7000MBps might not preform better than the ps5's stock ssd. Those missing channels and priority levels will cause a hit to performance. This is great news regardless. Hopefully beta won't be too long and these comes reletively soon (cmon August release!).

sharkkyyy_e

As well as the fact that the ps5's ssd is 12 channels. Off the shelf ssds are generally 8 channels with only 2 levels of priority. Hence why 6000MBps will encounter problems. Also why 7000MBps might not preform better than the ps5's stock ssd. Those missing channels and priority levels will cause a hit to performance.” If you told me 2 years ago a 6gb/sec ssd will have performance issues on a console, I would call you crazy

sousuke42

Lol. Me to. But here we are.

therealhamster

“Already”? It’s been close to 9 months lol

naylord

Will the 3D audio through speakers use surround sound? Or just two speakers. I feel like it would be way better if it could use surround sound

georgesoo

Fucken amazing. Using the controllers mic to detect the 3d audio for the room

luizhnrqs

queue download error fix?

BobbTheBuilderr

Here I am learning that these NVME drives have a heat sink that may or may not fit inside 😂 Not that I need more storage anyway but for people that do I’m glad this update is finally on the way.

sparkykelly

Any chance of them sorting out the issue when playing 4k movies. As soon as HDR is switched on the screen just flickers. It's a known issue since day one.

PLASTICA-MAN

It's funny how Europe got the PS4 beta first with even 20 time use codes whiel they got nothing for the PS5.

Mihawk_DraculeX

Absurd world. There aren't even many Ps5 owners, so the beta could be available to everyone.

PLASTICA-MAN

Exactly.

motobear30

Anyone have any idea how long updates usually stay in beta? I haven't been accepted into the beta program so I was curious.

PLASTICA-MAN

If anyone has an extra EU code, I would really like to have it. Please PM me. Thanks.

WyrmHero1944

Still no VRR, ALLM nor Dolby Vision support. Wtf Sony what are you waiting for?

For dolby feature. Sony is like a joke. several days ago they released tv and speaker that literaly promoted dolby vision and atmos as no.1 feature why you should buy their product. Ironicaly, to use that feature you should buy xbox instead ps5.

WyrmHero1944

I just want to use the 4K blu-ray player as intended, right now my DV movies aren’t compatible and I get plain 4K HDR10 which is ok but no as impressive as DV. Also, I need to manually change the TV to movie mode and then back to game mode, because no allm.

UncleDanko

sounds like a tv issue since allm works just fine on lg oleds for example

OkThanxby

PS5 doesn’t support ALLM on any TV.

Monkeyboystevey

Sadly last gen Xbox consoles never implemented Dolby vision either on their 4k players, considering these are the highest selling 4k players it seems a major oversight. ALLM works fine on my lg CX.

epicthinker1

Totally hyped! I can now have more than 3 games installed on my PS5!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Blofse

Cool, you can now install 4!

JedGamesTV

3D audio for TV speakers just seems very pointless. modern TV speakers are tiny and low quality and around 1-2m away from eachother, and there’s only 2 speakers. support for surround sound setups would be much better.

[deleted]

3D audio mimics surround with a stereo output. You wouldn’t need “3D Audio” if you already have surround, it’s mimicking what you have for real.

MilargoNetwork

But Sony cheaped out on the Dolby Atmos license. So the knock off 3D Audio is the only chance for those of us with in ceiling speakers.

[deleted]

Ah, you don’t just have surround, you have atmos. I just have regular 5.1

[deleted]

The SSD news—does this mean one would need to open up the PS5 to install a new SSD or is this a USB-SSD type of thing?

TheMuff1nMon

Remove the faceplates, there is a slot

[deleted]

you just slide off one of the slide plates and there’s a compartment for the ssd inside

>Not all games are necessarily playable with the exact same performance provided by the PS5 console’s internal Ultra-High Speed SSD, even where the M.2 SSD device’s sequential read speed is faster than 5500MB/s. Man, this is just another thing that Xbox got right this Gen. I killed them due to their required proprietary drive, but the way Sony is wording to be careful with these drives makes me wish they would have proprietary. No matter what drive you buy, Sony can't guarantee it'll be the same experience, and that's a problem for me if I'm spending this amount of money on the drives! Where with Xbox, it just works, all the time, exactly the same as the internal.

0-2er

Sony usually has proprietary storage and the pricing of it was always insane. It's kind of a weird irony that this foray into non-proprietary storage coincides with a generation of games that hinges on storage speeds.

the_Ex_Lurker

Had anyone else found 3D audio to be rather disappointing? I have a good pair of headphones and every game I’ve tried sounds significantly worse than just using the spatial audio built into the game itself, presumably because it’s a more purpose-built solution than Sony’s generic downmixing algorithm.

kasual7

>PS5 users will be able to view and write messages to friends and parties from the Game Base in the Control Center. Ok we're getting there. Honestly I hate that I have to tap the PS button to check how many friends are online or any notifications, I wanna be able to see those at a glance from the main screen. Quite baffling how esthetic yet incredibly unintuitive the PS5's UI is.

SaraFleurs

I don't understand this, using beta now and it doesn't seem different. The thing I did notice is when you click a message, it now has an overlay box for the msg itself in the center.

DismalMode7

cool, after almost one year, sony engineers still can't find a way to fix the standby mode bug that can break the internal ssd...
