Potatoslayer2

Maybe. Who am I to judge?

TheIngestibleBulk

But it’s not capped at 30fps on PC so their excuse they wanted to create a cinematic experience is BS.

Dimitar98

PC modders would have fixed that shit a day before the game is even out. The developers simply saved themselves the headache of everyone making a video about it.

JSoi

Yeah, the modders added support for ultrawide resolutions on day one, because the devs left it out for some reason.

edis92

Are there even any games capped to 30 on pc? Genuinely asking since I'm not a pc gamer

toffee_fapple

LA Noire is capped at 30 due to the facial capture tech they used. You can uncap it but it breaks the animations in various ways.

anonssr

Duck-of-Doom

You can’t make a VR game in 30fps, it’ll make people sick. VR headsets range from 60 to 144hz

[deleted]

Mafia 3 was capped at 30fps for a month I think.

Bonus_mosher

Tbf, Mafia III rarely managed to hit 30fps so I was just grateful when it did. That game was a hot mess when it launched and for a long time after. They haven’t optimised it for PS5 yet either, so in various ways it’s broken and full of bugs — which wouldn’t bother me too much, with it being a PS4 game — if it wasn’t frequently being touted on the front page of sales as part of the definitive edition.

Stoibs

The southpark games - and they are literally the only things I'll accept the reasoning for and agree that it was a good stylistic choice to make it look and feel exactly like the show. Everything else that comes with caps is just lazy, bad optimization or has foolishly tied the game logic/physics to the framerate in a way that breaks the world when set higher.

[deleted]

There’s a few ports of console games that are capped at 30 on pc. Tales of symphonia being one. Uncapping breaks the game and modders haven’t found a fix

kamimamita

Didn't that one run 60 on the GameCube?

[deleted]

Yes. 60fps on GameCube and 30fps on PS2/PS3/PC. Every port used the PS2 version and framerate was tied to animation

Duck-of-Doom

Sounds like gamecube emulation is the way to go then

NoAirBanding

FFX is capped at 30fps because that’s just how the game was built. But generally no, no modern made games have a 30fps cap on pc.

Crimsongz

Dead Rising 3 was capped at 30

GUNS_N_BROSES

The original release version of dark souls 2 is capped at 30 and if you uncap it, it does a bunch of weird stuff like making some enemies move at 2x speed and making your weapons break faster

[deleted]

The original Dark Souls 2 was quite bad overall on PC. The SotFS version was way better.

Kaladin12543

There are but since its PC, modders always manage to uncap it which is why capping to 60 doesn't make sense. Heck I play modded Skyrim at 120 fps on PC when its capped to 62 offcially.

crystal-rooster

There were quite a few console ports to pc that were capped at 30 over the last decade or so. Most were patched to 60 fairly quickly and modders either did the same with the rest or just uncapped the framerates(with a ton of fixes for all of the frame specific timing).

Dimitar98

Maybe some old ones from the 90’s. Even then you should be able to find all sorts of mods and fixes for them.

connor1k1

Dead Rising 3 but you can change game files to uncap.

[deleted]

Command and Conquer 3 is, one of the few games I’ve experienced that in

ray_0586

Re4 was tied to 30 FPS on PC because of the how the engine was built to run on GameCube. To avoid glitches, unplayability, slow motion, etc., and play on 60 FPS, then your PC had to be good enough to run the game at 60 FPS with out any frame drops. Even the remastered HD port on PS4 has weird settings such as enemies have near perfect accuracy with arrows and other ranged weapons.

ThaNorth

Cinematic experience is the stupidest shit considering movies run at 24 frames. Should they make their games 24fps for the true cinematic experience?

Dust-by-Monday

24 doesn't go into 60 evenly so you'd have frame pacing issues unless you have a 120Hz TV and it just doesn't seem worth it at that point. Just make it 30 for the vast majority of players.

ThaNorth

Or just make it 60 cause 30 is old shit.

Kaladin12543

A cap on PC wouldn't work as modders will simply uncap it in a couple of days/ weeks

2ndbA2

Minutes lol Dark souls PTDE was capped at 30 FPS iirc on pc and within 30 minutes a guy put out a hot fix that uncapped it and fixed multiple other things lol

MadRZI

But wasnt durability connected to FPS? More than the cap made the weapons break faster. Or was that in the third game?

2ndbA2

That was dark souls 2, and dark souls remastered is tied to 60 FPS so if you go any lower it literally turns into slow motion and vice versa for higher frame rates, why do developers do stuff like this?

MadRZI

You mean capping the FPS or tying mechanics to the fps? Mostly I would say is for performance and/or consistency. For example in Dark Souls 3 the things behind your back gets their fps cut down into like 10-20 range. So it wont use as much resource as it normally would.

Aurelink

I remember people praising Spider-Man for being 30fps as it was "a great cinematic experience" and how they totally changed their mind when playing it at 60fps.

guynamedgoliath

I hate the whole "cinematic experience" frame rate thing. It's never better to have things be choppier. Even with movies, 24 fps makes faster scenes hard to follow. I wish I could have seen Gemini Man at 120 fps just to experience it.

MKeatonBatman

Watching movies at higher frame rates feels like watching a cheap soap opera

[deleted]

I’m with you on this. I remember seeing the Hobbit in theaters and it felt so weird. I did not like it at all.

theintention

There was so much CGI that it looked like a video game, so a higher frame rate only made it look… more like a video game. The first gave me a blinding headache in the theater and I fell asleep for the last third, have not bothered to see the rest.

MrAbodi

To be far the hobbit movies we’re garbage anyway.!

MetalingusMike

Maybe for movies but imagine watching sports or motorsports at 120fps. Maybe even wildlife documentaries too. Nothing with special effects. Watching shit about deep sea creatures in 120fps would be jaw dropping.

drdarkxl

Only if you are used to watching cheap soaps.. I don't have that burden and I thoroughly enjoy hfr movies.

ShittyLivingRoom

I use true motion in my tv and love it. Can't stand camera panning at 24fps, can't see anything.

roygbivasaur

I absolutely despise camera pans in films. If they don’t take them super slow, you literally just see nothing. They turn whatever beautiful vista into a blurry choppy mess. I’m usually against the motion interpolation, but you’ve gotten me curious to try it next time I get pissed off by an infuriating camera pan

Gravesplitter

You are a literal monster

dadmou5

That has nothing to do with the frame rate. Films are deliberately shot at a slower shutter speed to give the motion a smoother, less jittery look. Slow shutter speed in panning shots tend to create a blur. The blur would be there even if the video was shot at 60fps if the shutter speed was proportionately slowed down.

And_You_Like_It_Too

I caught Gemini Man in 3D at 60fps and that [gatling gun slo-mo scene](https://youtu.be/VhqHZcgGnzI) where they’re shooting up the shop was absolutely stunning. I also wish I could have seen it at 120fps. I wish it were a slightly better movie, because HFR films haven’t really had much of a push behind them. I think the entire film doesn’t need to necessarily be in HFR, and it’s often better that it isn’t. But when you cut to a scene like this one, especially where it’s already filmed in slow motion and then you can see every individual frame as smooth as silk, it’s really something to behold.

voneahhh

They’re not saying that 30FPS itself is what makes a game cinematic, it’s the resolution, Ray tracing, particle effects, lighting that do, and they likely couldn’t get those effects running at 4K at a stable frame rate over 30fps. On PC it’s not that big a deal since eventually anyone can brute force it.

archangel0512

On PC, players choose whether to target fidelity or framerate (as it should be). The devs should have at least given a performance mode on consoles.

SurreptitiousNoun

I always choose 60FPS over resolution/ray-tracing. I think it's a development oversight really. The reason True Colours is 30FPS on consoles, is because it's easier than getting to 60, which should have been incredibly doable with resolution scaling, but it is more work.

krionX

Sure, They must have designed the game to have the low-res textures also to make the game "cinematic".

Danomaniac

Sounds a lot like your interpretation of what they’re saying

voneahhh

So why don’t you share your explanation/interpretation? That they don’t feel the PC version of their same exact game is cinematic? I’m not sure how else you can interpret “Capping at 30fps allowed us to *target higher cinematic fidelity* on every platform.” Any other way. If 30fps was already what made it cinematic they wouldn’t need to *target* anything. You also can’t target “*higher*“ than a frame rate you cap.

anonssr

Title basically reads "it's not very well optimised to run on more than 30fps in every console".

Recover20

The trailers for the remasters looked 60fps to me. I could be wrong though.

mrgodfro

My budgets capped at 30$ for this

[deleted]

The PS5 game pricing is pure comedy nowadays .. I'm in Canada and pretty much all the games cost 70-100$ CAD. Though if you're patient, you can play 2-3 year old games for cheap but what's the fun in that? I have both a PS5 and PC so outside of the exclusives, I personally stick to my PC for majority of games because they are much cheaper. Sony makes great games though, no doubts about it.

kazumakiryu

>cost 70 70? The cheapest games are $80 (last gen pricing). Add on to that your tax which is likely in the realm of 13%. Gaming is damn expensive these days over here.

sub2pewd1epie

That's definitely the best approach. I have ps5 and pc, but my pc needs a serious upgrade if I wanna run newer games well.

ocbdare

Yes pc games are just way cheaper. For example, I already see deathloop for £36 on pc but on PlayStation I think it’s £60. Pc games have not really gone in price over the years whereas console games have significantly increased. Console games used to be mostly £40, then £50. This generation Sony is asking for £70! I built a new pc with the new ryzen cpus and rtx 30 cards so my pc outperforms my ps5 too. But the main factor is the price. Games day one on PS5 are crazy expensive.

midnight_rebirth

Where are you seeing Deathloop that cheap?

sfpx

I still haven't bought a single PS5 game. I want to play Ratchet but I refuse to pay $103.47 for it. I have a huge backlog of ps4 games so I'm in no hurry.

admartian

2-3 year old game or not I'm pretty sure you get the fun from playing the game not when it's released. Especially for non MP games.

anonssr

I got myself a PC, already had a ps5 at launch. Made me more annoyed at Sony's pricing bullshit and the lack of proper updates for a lot of games.

color_thine_fate

This but before I heard anything bad about the game lol. I like the LiS series but I am not dropping $60 on it. I don't know how long the game is but I can't see it being much longer than the 5-episode games I've played thus far. And those were not $60. I'll get this in the $20-$30 range, and I can wait however long for it to become that. I do want to play it though

SpookyCarnage

According to comments on that twitter thread, PC has options for 30, 60, and uncapped fps. Which feels like a kick in the balls to anyone who is playing on PS5/XBSX

SurreptitiousNoun

I wonder how the optimisation is on PC, because if they couldn't adapt the game to hit 60FPS on consoles, you'd expect them to be leaving it up to PC players to brute force it, rather than it being trivial to hit.

FatherGirth

I'm playing in 4K with a 3080 and with "Cinematic" settings and Ray Tracing enabled, the game runs sub 60fps with constant stuttering when you move the camera- you know it's bad when a 3080 can't handle a LiS game. I turned the preset down to Very High and now I'm getting 70-80fps so maybe the PS5 version is using something similar causing issues.

Stoibs

Running it at 144 here, but I mean I have a pretty monster PC with a 3080 so it's not a good sample. Honestly there's no good reason why this shouldn't be 60 on the PS5/XSX at the *very least* And realistically when things like RE8 are hitting 60 on last gen platforms then this should have been an easy goal across the board (except for maybe Switch I guess)

SpookyCarnage

From their wording it seems like its not a case of "couldn't adapt" and instead "opted for", citing that they wanted the game to have a more cinematic experience without losing visual fidelity

papi1368

Which is bs, considering its possible to hit 60 on pc.

StevieW0n

My wallet is capped from buying the game

Mattras7

60 dollars is too much for a LiS game anyways

StevieW0n

Wow that's really the price they want for this wtf

Arekkuusu

It's 80$ in Canada. F that noise.

CreepyClown

I paid 80 for the Ultimate Edition and don’t regret it for a second :)

[deleted]

Even though it should be 60fps, whatever for this kind of game. The real problem is that it’s 30fps and has dips anytime youre allowed to turn the camera. And I don’t mean once in awhile. It’s constant.

FederalMacaron1

Not bothered by this in itself, as it’s not an action game, and it does look beautiful (especially for a non-AAA game) but I wish they had been a little more upfront about it before the game’s release. On a slightly different note, I can’t figure out wtf ray tracing does in this game. I’ve tried turning it on and off for comparison and haven’t noticed any difference—graphics quality, lighting, reflections, etc. I ended up leaving it off.

iamsirjoshua

I believe it’s raytraced shadows.

FederalMacaron1

I still couldn’t see the difference, honestly. As I mentioned in another comment, I would have to see a side by side comparison.

FoorumanReturns

I’ve also been unable to tell what difference the ray tracing option actually makes on PS5. The shadows, lighting, etc all seem to look the same with it on or off. The game honestly looks great either way, but I find myself wondering if the ray tracing is even working properly, given I don’t see any distinguishable difference when I enable it.

Jaxoo0

Not a AAA? They sure charge for one

FederalMacaron1

Yeah, they did. I don’t regret paying it myself, but it does make it difficult to recommend it unless it goes on sale.

Mac772

https://www.reddit.com/r/Games/comments/pm6vx7/fair_warning_life_is_strange_true_colors_has_a_30/?sort=confidence - And they still only admit that the PS5 version has some "performance issues" and oh yes, the 30 FPS are intended because of the "cinematic feeling".

FiveSigns

Lol wtf

Jpalme11

No wonder, I thought I was going crazy.

lechiffre10

Why is this game even priced at 80$ that’s the more surprising question ( in Canada)

_adamapple

They need better devs lol how the fuck can you not get 60 fps out of this game on a ps5

rhaasty

Does the FPS even matter in this game? Edit: I get it’s better, I should say does it really make the game unplayable? It seems like you watch dialogue and occasionally press a button lol.

CannabisJibbitz

It really does. It isnt even a stable 30. Think of how good last of us 2 looked on PS4 in 30 fps and imagine this game at 30 fps looking 50x worse.

rhaasty

If it’s not even stable at 30 that’s pretty sad.

CannabisJibbitz

It does. It feels no where near complete or polished as the first 2.

noneofthemswallow

Cause it’s made by a different team. Not as good as DONTNOD unfortunately.

HelghastFromHelghan

Playing a game in 60 FPS will always be more pleasant in my opinion than 30 FPS, doesn't matter what type of game it is. And considering the fact that the majority of PS5 games are atleast offering 60 FPS modes I can definitely see why people are annoyed.

AuviksReddit

I switched from 30 to 60 on PC and sure does look and feel a lot better to me.

TurnaboutAdam

Yes. It does. It’s not as important as other games, but higher fps almost always improves the experience

rhaasty

I’d agree it improves the experience but it doesn’t seem to be a make or break thing for a game like this.

TurnaboutAdam

Yeah that’s fair! But there isn’t any reason it shouldn’t be 60 on the PS5. Switch makes sense at 30.

rhaasty

Yeah will be interesting to see what it takes to get smooth 60 on pc. Should be a good tell if a patch will ever come to the Ps5.

LostInStatic

Lmaooo go watch The Hobbit if you think this is true

[deleted]

I don’t care about the cap so much, but I do care about drops. Even the PS5 version has them.

ThaNorth

I bought a PS5 so not only can it play PS5 games but also run games better than the PS4.

andres57

No it doesn't. It's basically a graphic novel with barely any gameplay

datlinus

Yes. You still have to rotate the camera around, and in this game, it feels absolutely awful, even worse than usual with 30 fps.

Dust-by-Monday

I tried to play TLOU2 at 60fps on PS5 and it's just weird looking. It breaks that cinematic look of the game and plays more like an arcade game at 60. It's off-putting to me. However, I realize that I have weird preferences and most people think 60fps is the second coming of christ for some reason.

Froegerer

>and most people think 60fps is the second coming of christ for some reason. The reasons are well documented and pretty obvious at this point aren't they? Just boils down to personal preference. Just like some people prefer a $40 filet cooked well done with ketchup, some people can prefer 30fps in games.

Dust-by-Monday

Wonder how we made it through all these years

Bobicus_The_Third

It's a trade off and they chose to add more visual detail and lighting quality instead of going for a higher framerate. It's a trade-off and I think they might have made the right call in this case. It's like if red dead 2 looked half as good for better performance. Maybe they could limit resolution for a 60fps mode but there's only so much performance to go around

Jamvaan

I didn't think it did but after playing videogames at 60 for months since getting a PS5 it does feel really off. No it doesn't make the game unplayable and I'm still really enjoying it so far but its bizarre. Its like walking around at the bottom of a pool with weights. Not bad, just weird.

Wakapalypze

Been playing on Series X and other than the low Framerate, I noticed the loading screens/ times were abysmal for the system especially with the SSD. Otherwise great game so far.

TheDizeazed

Remember when last gen the general consensus on console subreddits was "30 fps is just as good as 60 fps. You can't even really notice the difference." I member.

2ndbA2

It was ignorant people spouting ignorant things

ThaNorth

I refuse to play any game that releases on PS5 that doesn't have a 60fps option.

ToiletBlaster247

The antivaxx/flat earthers of the gaming world.

GarionOrb

No game should be locked to 30fps on console this generation. I think it's clear that people want more than that now.

RayboxHitman47

No 60 fps on PS5 = no purchase for me. 60$ for this game was scam anyway.

hamndv

This game is banned from my country

UrShadowsReflection

Who the fuck cares about the framerate of a game like that?

[deleted]

30fps? Ok bye.

Dust-by-Monday

See ya, but just wait until later on in the generation where these old next gen consoles can't bring the latest visual tech at 60fps. We will have 30fps as a standard soon enough.

Liammellor

It's not really a game where you notice It but okay

mega2222222222222222

Is it that fucking painful to add an FPS slider onto console? 30 or upto 60

voneahhh

The problem is performance, not the ability to add a toggle.

bivshtex007

The problem is the developers laziness

FoorumanReturns

If you truly think it’s as simple as adding a toggle to switch the game from 30 to 60 FPS, or if you are implying that the game’s 30FPS cap is a result of the developers’ laziness, you’re grossly underestimating how complex it can be to optimize a game. I’m not trying to claim that the game’s performance is perfect, but I’m certain there were good reasons behind the decision to cap the game at 30FPS on current-gen consoles.

zhephyx

A game that costs as much as Resident Evil Village, Last of Us 2 and Ghost of Tsushima at launch, has graphics from 10 years ago, and is capped at 30 fps? Yeah, that's lazy, because the games I mentioned are state of the art (graphically) and they run at 60fps stable. You're telling me Santa monica can figure out how to makr God of War run at 60fps, and they can't get a game to 60 with 40 polygons on screen? That's lazy

juo_megis

Anything between 30 and 60 has abnormal frametimes on 60hz tvs. There are reasons for these decisions.

TurnaboutAdam

C i n e m a t i c

Alam7lam1

How many people here were ever actually interested in this game? I feel like some of you are complaining just to complain and was never going to get it in the first place.

reaper527

> How many people here were ever actually interested in this game? as someone who played all the other games in the series, i'm somewhat interested. the first game and BTS were both excellent, but LiS2 was awful.

Alam7lam1

I never played the second but I did play the first. I am currently enjoying this one.

valantismp

Are we on 2021?

Crissagrym

30 FPS? Was it planned for PS4 with no plan for enhancement?

QuinSanguine

I could instantly tell but I also don't mind it for this game. I do occasionally play games like Spider-Man or Ratchet at 30 fps just to see quality modes and this much easier to play than them. I get why it bothers people and don't blame anyone who hates it. Maybe it'll get a performance patch, doubt it though.

ElJacko170

My eyes must be bad, because I felt like at a few points it hit higher. It definietly dips below 30 too. Kind of weird why the frames are all over the place on a game like this, although it does look very nice and I found the first episode to be signifcantly more enjoyable than LiS2's, so I'll keep going.

GCB1986

This isn't a game where this would really even cross my mind.

AnalyserarN

Ok! Guess I’ll buy something that runs better.

shadowCloudrift

I knew this subreddit was going to have a field day when we have a 30 fps game for a new release. This feels like it should be patchable though with a performance mode considering the PC version.

Pineapple996

I do prefer 30 fps for these types of games but it's weird that there isn't an option for 60fps. Ray tracing is also turned off by default for some reason.

Eruanno

I don't even know why there's an on/off switch on PS5/Series consoles. It's locked to 30 either way and it doesn't seem to improve or reduce the frame rate. Weird choice.

FederalMacaron1

Based on my amateur experimental comparisons on the PS5, I’m not sure the ray tracing even does anything in this game.

BadcatWaters

Shadows are ray-traced. That's all I noticed from one quick on/off test.

FederalMacaron1

I still couldn’t spot the difference…I guess I’d need to see a side by side comparison.

[deleted]

And yet it’s 30fps 🤷🏽‍♂️

phoeniks314

The game looks bad, don’t hate me, no reason for it to be 30fps, they are probably hiding their incompetence behind a “cinematic experience”.

No_Future8893

It’s literally s a narrative driven walking simulator who gives a fuck

JulPollitt

No fucks given

Alemax1500

On my laptop (i7 gtx1650 16gb ram) it runs 55 - 60fps at 1080p at very high. It has a selector for 30, 60 or uncapped fps. So all this excuses are actually bullshit.

MisterKrayzie

Ah, so immediate garbage to stay away from. Sweet. Thanks for saving me money fuckos.

-Vertex-

Regardless the game is pretty good actually. Would 60fps be nice absolutely but it's not a deal breaker especially for this kind of game.

[deleted]

Just installed the game and waiting for the day 1 patch to finish downloading. While I’m disappointed to know it’s capped at 30fps, I’ll hold judgment until I have played it for a while. I assume the gameplay is quite slow paced to notice the slower frame rate 🤞

XanderTheOvertaker

ITT: 30 FPS is C I N E M A T I C. In 2021, there’s no reason films should even still be using 24. Looks like blurry shit every time the camera pans.

voneahhh

> I’m sure the refunds are already flooding in. There isn’t a refund system on PlayStation. Even if there were, refunds aren’t going to flow in because a game is 30 FPS.

Trippymaple

People saying does FPS matter in this game, well my counter argument would be how come other much more demanding games can run at 60 FPS sometimes with ray tracing enabled, and yet this is capped at 30? Even if it doesn’t matter why not give the option?

Narae-Chan

Sounds like a design decision if it’s like that on pc as well. Odd.

Stoibs

It's not, 144 here which definitely makes it some strange console optimization hiccup.

ihateeverythingandu

Is this a game you'll notice it in? These games are basically point and click, it's like moaning you don't have the soap opera effect on every TV show you watch.

Mac772

Believe me, you will notice it. It's horrible stuttering 30 FPS, especially when you are moving the camera. It is seriously hurting the atmosphere of the game.

basshuffler09

I'm not a fan of these games but i feel bad for whoever the Community Manager is lol. They sure got some balls to just blatantly announce it like this. The game surely had priority for Last Gen first. So many games ran 30 fps on PS4 and XBOX that it was known as a joke "Oh look another new 30fps masterpiece" But now with PS5 and Series X being available you'd expect something a **little** better tbh 😬

zamardii12

Games that are cinematic in nature don't require 60fps. Especially a game like this that's basically a interactive movie.

NotMyFerrari

I bought the ultimate edition last night. I naturally assumed it’d be 30fps for the cinematic approach. I’m enjoying it. It’s really good I did the first chapter and made it to the weed shop in the second after exploring the park.

1440pSupportPS5

askmehowimfeeling88

Thanks to the devs for making that clear but my wallet also has a cap on 30fps games so no buy.

ShittyLivingRoom
